Harriet Muncaster studied illustration at Norwich University College of the Arts before going on to get an MA in children’s book illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. In creating the art for her first book for children, she was thrilled to have found a good outlet for her lifelong fascination with miniatures. She lives in Hertfordshire, England.
Victoria Stitch is back in all kinds off bad and glittering mayhem!
A wonderful sequel that is like a gothic/extravagant fairytale/story. I am loving this genre of middle grade books that are gothic and whimsical at the same time! The plot is full of excitement. Muncaster highlight important topics about family, friendship, bravery and confidence. Everything about this book is wonderfully charming. Victoria Stitch really grows as a character, learning to be more mindful and careful, while Celestine learns to stand up for herself and do what she believes is right. The story and illustrations are a beautiful blend of gothic whimsy!
The ending was so beautiful and sweet and something different totally different that you don't see in many middle grade books. Dark, glittering, and full of action, its core lies and in reinforcing the magic of self-acceptance.
Really enjoyed this very glittery and sparkly sequel to the first Victoria Stitch! I think I liked the first one slightly better but this was a good continuation of the story and I loved all the glam touches and the illustrations. As with the first, there is more depth than I had guessed there would be, and it was fun reading about Victoria Stitch's continuing adventures in the human world.
*Spoiler alert* After reading the first book in the Victoria Stitch series, Bad and Glittering, I was so excited to find out what happened to Victoria Stitch when she escapes the Wiskling prison for the human world. Free and Famous did not disappoint! I was totally absorbed. I loved the relationship that develops between Victoria Stitch and Naomi, the human girl, and the delightful juxtaposition of VS's tiny world and Naomi' big world, mixed with the similarity between their plights - to be noticed and accepted for who they really are and want to be. It is delightful being able to experience Victoria Stitch and Naomi both come alive, by recognizing each other's talents and building on them together. The illustrations are absolutely charming and there is a big treat at the end which I WON'T spoil, but really want to!! Let's just say there is a very funny additional story at the end which adds loads of charm and detail to the visual delight of this series. I highly recommend this series and this book to young children who are having difficulty accepting themselves and being proud of who they are, but I'd recommend it for any reader who loves stepping inside a fantasy world that feels believable.
The series is becoming formulaic. And Victoria Stitch is pretty self-centered. When she finally makes a good decision it is still more about her than any loyalty to her sister, doing the right thing or her duty. I had already bought the 3rd installment, so I will read it sometime down the line. She would be so much more interesting if she had more personality beyond vanity and selfishness. Her good deeds are born of coincidence or more the doing of others than any action or intrinsic motivation on her part. Perhaps not the best lessons for children because they are sure to love her, given their own emotional/intellectual stages of life.
I combined reading the beautifully illustrated gothic fairy tale’s ebook with its unabridged audiobook edition.
Harriet Muncaster’s detailed black and white illustrations were enchanting.
Yes, I know that this series is intended for Middle Grade readers. Yet I feel that Victoria Stitch has an appeal for the Goth at heart no matter their age.
I loved the character development, and Victoria Stitch’s new friendship shows how much she really cares deep down! The relationship between her and Celestine is brilliant - the deep love, rivalry, friendships and frustrations feels like a genuine sibling relationship!
Very different from other tween books. Gothy, dazzling, fast-paced and heart-warming!
