I may be biased but this is a damn good book! The Registration was birthed out of frustration, fear, and love. Frustration that the politics of this country did not seem to take care of people. Fear that things could always get worse. And love because I disagree with some people on some big political issues that I thought would break relationships but didn't because loving them meant more than being right. I've always loved suspense, thriller, and horror. I like stuff that makes my heart race. I like when characters are put in seemingly impossible situations and have to grasp at straws in order to survive. What happens when they're pushed to their limit? What do they learn about themselves? In almost everything I’ve ever written; family has been a major theme or question I wanted answered. In The Registration, the question was: How resilient are family bonds, and what sort of duty do we have to family members? I think what moves me about this is that there doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut answer. It all depends on the individual and the situation. And while I want to believe that blood family doesn’t mean anything beyond genetics unless we give it meaning, there does seem to be a sort of pull there, whether we want it or not. I could keep going but I'm SO EXCITED for this story to be entering the world. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Imagine you are allowed to commit one murder during your life with no consequences. If you register your kill and close the deal within 2 weeks, there is no penalty for you. Lynell Mize is ready to settle a score with the man that abused her as a child. During the registration process she finds out that there is someone who has registered to kill her?! She must find out who and why quickly, before it’s too late.
What a novel concept for a book. Great fast pacing in this story and plenty of twists kept me fully engaged. I really enjoyed it and would be glad to read another Madison Lawson book in the future!
Thanks to @suzyapprovedbooktours for having me on this tour and Madison Lawson and CamCat Books for my ARC.
This review will be posted to my Instagram Blog (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
Soon to be a major motion picture, The Registration is a fast paced, keep you on the edge of your seat dystopian thriller PERFECT for people who loved The Hunger Games or Divergent, but want to read about adult main characters. I listened to this audiobook and I couldn’t stop listening! This book explored some heavy, dark topics in a way that left you still thinking about it for hours after you finished. This is going to make a crazy good movie and I can’t wait to watch it!
It definitely felt like everything I loved about reading YA Dystopian, but geared to an older audience. No love triangles, no teenagers, no teenage drama…it was really enjoyable!
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was hooked from the very first page. The Registration challenges our humanity in a visceral, heart pounding exploration of right and wrong. As the rules of The Registration unfolded, I found myself questioning what I would do if I was in Lynell's position, the answers of which both intrigued and horrified me at the same time. Reminiscent of The Purge but with more heart, this crime thriller is set in a near-future dystopia. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. While this book kept me on the edge of my seat, the scariest part of The Registration is not reading it at all.
I really enjoy reading speculative books because, many times, the truth is buried somewhere in the book or at least one viewpoint of the world we are living in.
Imagine being able to kill one person with no repercussions. Who would you want to eliminate and why? Lynell Mize has her sights set on an abusive stepfather. No one would blame her since he does not appear to be a worthwhile individual. Now imagine you are there to register who you want to take out, and you hear your name. That has to be very unsettling. What do you do? If you can elude the person for two weeks, they can't kill you after that time, and they have lost their opportunity. I know I would try and escape or hide from that person and pray for the best.
We learn a lot about Lynell during this time once she hears her name and tries to avoid being caught by the person that registered her. However, we learn that multiple people have registered her, and she is being hunted. Who does she trust? Can she trust anyone? When the truth came out about why she was being hunted, it blew my mind! I admired Lynell even more at that point and everything she endured to try and uncover the truth.
Lynell is the type of woman that I think many of us hope that we can be - strong, intelligent, and willing to protect those that she loves. There is a slight mystery along with the suspense of this book. I figured out part of it but still didn't know how it all would come together in the end.
I was also rooting for Lynell and Danny's relationship. Would they be able to get back on track? Some secrets come out that could make or break their relationship.
This was a riveting story, and now I'm curious what the movie will be like and if it will live up to the book.
I received an advance review audiobook for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Madison Lawson and iRead Book Tours. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.
I’m not going to lie, the premise of this one had me hooked! Imagine it’s legal to commit one murder in your lifetime if you register the victim and accomplish the kill within fourteen days. When Lynell Mize stands in line to Register the man who abused her as a child, she’s shocked to hear a stranger Register her to be killed. With her mind blown, Lynell wants to know who wants to kill her and why. Desperate to survive the next two weeks, she finds out multiple people have Registered her.
The book is interesting. Set in the US and a dystopia future in which the justice system has changed and replaced with ‘The Registration” which citizens are allowed to register one person to legally kill without ramifications.
The book is captivating, powerful, and full of suspense. As Lynell goes on the run, she’s captured by people who think she has the information they need. They’ll use torture if necessary. Coincidentally her ex-husband enters to save the day but leaves Lynell wondering who she can trust.
The book is also well written, full of adventure, and realistic. I could see this type of future happening. Maybe not in the US but somewhere. I highly recommend this book; it’ll keep you engaged from start to finish while wanting more!
An original concept in speculative fiction. Imagine a country where each person has the ability to murder one person for any reason without consequence just by 'registering' them before hand and completing the act within fourteen days. This is the world Lynell Mize finds herself in in this thrilling, thought provoking novel. Just as Lynell works up the courage to register her abuser, while standing in line she hears a stranger registering her and thus the clock starts on a harrowing race to find out who would register her and why and then to stay alive for the following two weeks. What follows is an incredible story that had me asking myself what I would do in this situation while simultaneously sitting on the edge of my seat reading what Lynell goes through.
I found this one to be as enjoyable as it is fascinating. The characters come alive within its pages with crisp dialogue and cinematic imagery. The plotting and pacing worked perfectly, keeping me invested from start to finish. By the end all I could say was 'wow, what did I just read?' My hats off to the author for building a world that strangely enough feels possible and the situations relatable. It was quite a journey and I'm minus a few fingernails now but what the heck, they'll grow back...
Thank you to the author, CamCat Books and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.
Disclaimer: The author happens to be among my favorite people on this earth, but holy cow she can write.
This book is pure escapism. It captivates you from the first page and takes you on a powerful ride through an amazingly intricate dystopian society that only Madison Lawson would be capable of dreaming up. It is fast-paced, thought-provoking, and fully of wildly entertaining twists and turns. It is everything you would want out of a suspense novel, but so much more.
One of my favorite things about Madison Lawson's work has always been her ability to understand what keeps us on the edge of the seat; what makes us come home from work, throw everything down, and immediately jump on the couch and back into a fictional world. BUT, The Registration is not gratuitous in its quest for readers' attention. It is deeply meaningful, grappling with the messiness of justice and exploring how power and fear shape relationships, even among family.
Review 4.5 stars! ❤️ The Purge meets The Hunger Games in this thriller scifi that will keep your heart racing from start to finish. If you enjoy rebellions, political intrigue, thrilling suspense and lots of action, this is a must read.
Imagine a society where people are allowed to kill one person in their life. As a way to cope for the constant failure of the system that let's murderers and criminals roam free, the registration gives the verdict to the hands of the people. Each person is allowed to register one being, and effectively kill them within 14 days of registration.
Lynell has struggled for years with the decision to register her abusive step dad, and when she finally makes the decision, she overhears someone register HER instead. I listened to the audiobook and it's unputdownable, from the very start Lynell is in a race against time as she runs from those who registered her. Worse is, she has no idea why not only one, but multiple people registered her. A fast paced read that will keep you thinking, "What if?".
Family is an important element of the story, what is the breaking point that turns family against each other? We follow plot twists after plot twists as we discover alongside Lynell that she is part of something huge that might just change everything. How far will blood ties go?
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review
I was immediately drawn into the book, as the world was ruled by The Registration now. The government granted US citizens one person of their choosing as long as they should live a chance to kill this person. You have two weeks to kill this person and nobody has ever escaped from their demise before. Also, you were only given ONE person per your entire life to complete this on…so, you had better use your registration correctly. A very interesting idea and it would make you think twice before ticking someone off, and it was very effective eliminating war.
When Lee was in line to register her horrific step father she overheard someone else register her and that’s when her nightmare began. Apparently, the head of the register had put a bounty on her head and she needed to find a way to evade her fate and take down the current registrations.
I really enjoyed the storyline and the author was able to sprinkle in great twists along the way to keep the suspense rate up. I would have ranked it higher except I felt like the book ran out of gas at the 80% mark and it led to an underwhelming abrupt ending.
All in all, I would recommend if you enjoy these dystopian type books. 3.5 stars
This novel has a fascinating premise. It’s set in the United States, but there is a justice system in a place called ‘The Registration’ where citizens are allowed to register one person to legally kill during their life with no legal implications.
It sounds simple enough, but things get complicated for Lynell Mize. When she is in line to Register the man who abused her as a child, she overhears a man Register her! With only days to live, Lynell is determined to find out who wants her dead and why.
This book got pretty intense as Lynell is on the run and then is captured by people who believe she has much-needed information. They aren’t afraid to torture her for it. Lynell’s ex-husband saves her and appears to be helping her, but she has family she never knew she had (I don’t want to give too much away here). My point is there are times you don’t know who to trust.
The book has great pacing, and plenty of action. I think it's thought-provoking, too - one could ask if a justice system like this is more moral or would it be more effective than our current system.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @madisonlawson for a spot on tour and a gifted copy.
Ooh this book had an interesting concept from the start. Imagine a world in which you are allowed to commit one murder during your life with no consequences. If you register your kill and close the deal within 2 weeks, there is no penalty for you.
I was on the edge of my seat while reading this! This book was fast-paced, there were so many twists and turns that had my full attention. This thriller, science-fiction, fantasy was a really good book and I’m hoping there will be a sequel!
The Registration is a fast-paced, intriguing novel that should be on the TBR list for all thriller and sci-fi fans. From the first page, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how Lynell would survive both the Registration and every (seemingly) impossible to survive situation she was placed in during those two weeks.
There were a few themes that shone through in the book but the one that most everyone can relate to is the importance of family and discovering how deep those bonds go, as shown by Lynell’s relationships with former husband and digging into her past. Being able to learn about Lynell throughout the book and see how her past both haunts and motivates her to solve the question of her Registration made her a likeable character. There were a few plot twists we never anticipated that helped expand Lynell’s backstory and were a great way to shake up the stakes!
While the mystery of the book kept us reading quickly, there were a few parts in the book that had a slower pace. A few side characters were not as fleshed out as they could have been in comparison to Lynell; the main ‘villain’ of the book seemed to just be evil and it was hard to find humanity with them. A few characters went through a moral struggle which brought me back into the story, but it would have been great to see that with all the characters.
Overall, The Registration was a thrilling read that will translate very well into a film adaptation. It only took us a few days to read as we both wanted to solve the riddle and understand this brutal yet beautiful world Madison created. Thank you for asking us to be ARC readers!
Imagine a world where you could legally commit one murder as long as you Register the person and do it with 14 days. Now imagine you are going to Register your chidhood abuser (like our MC Lynell is) and hear your own name being Registered by a stranger?
Wow, this book! When there's action, it's crazy and terrifying. When it's trying to figure out the why and how Lynell would ever be Registered, it's heart pounding fear. Lynell was a STRONG woman! She had so much thrust at her in such a small amount of time, but I was in awe of how she handled it (especially in the face of Eric).
If you want a book that will take you on a wild, sci-fi/dystopian ride, pick this up today!
From the first page to the last, this book pulled me in and didn't let go. The Registration is an intelligent and creative fiction story that caused me to think much deeper about quite a few topics. It's also just flat out exciting to read. I'm hoping there's a sequel available soon.
Lawson brings real word issues into sharp focus with this Black Mirror-esque novel. Fast paced and action packed, with a lot of disorientation up front.
The Registration is a book I had never heard of before the end of last year. When I was asking friends for recommendations for my ‘Read 12 Books Recommended by 12 Friends’ Challenge someone recommended this one. This is honestly not my typical kind of read but as I was using this challenge to try and broaden my reading horizons, I decided to give it a go. I am so glad I added this book as I actually really enjoyed it.
The Registration is a dystopian thriller set in a world that asks ‘if it was legal for you to register and kill one person in your life would it help control the amounts of crime in our world.’ I found this such a fascinating concept and it does really make you think about the similarities and differences between this world and ours. It definitely included some very real topics, for example women who wanted to have an abortion had to use their ‘registration’ for this and there were rebel groups fighting against this. It was so thought provoking and I really enjoyed this concept. The main plot centred around Lynell, a girl who goes to use her registration only to overhead someone she has never met registering her.
Right from the first chapter I was absolutely hooked into this book. Madison Lawson did an absolutely fantastic job of really gripping you in right from the start. I listened to this one via audiobook, which I listen to on my commutes and I remember pulling into my work carpark mouth agape, shocked and kind of angry that I was going to have to wait an entire day till my drive home to listen to more. I felt like this throughout the entire thing.
The narrator of this audiobook was fantastic. She really brought the characters and this plot to life, and I am so glad that I decided to listen to the audiobook of this one. It was truly fantastic. A huge thank you to the publisher and netgalley for allowing me the audiobook edition to review. If you’re looking for something exciting that you can’t put down, give this one a go. It truly was such a fantastic book and after seeing Madison is going to write a sequel I honestly cannot wait to read it. The Registration was action packed, fast paced and leaves you hanging all the way through. I honestly cannot recommend this one enough! Go get it now, you won’t be disappointed!
America is just coming out of a civil war. Peace has been restored by the Registration. Each person now has the right to kill one other person with no legal consequences. Suffering loved ones, unwanted pregnancies, predators who have evaded other types of justice; the Registration is the answer. It's an intriguing premise but I'm just as puzzled at the end of the book as I was before. How can killing bring peace? The story does have its moments. There are some good surprises and lots of suspense, but just between you and me, I found all the torture to be a bit tedious. This is a debut novel. Lawson definitely has some inventive potential. My advice would be to skip this one but look for her next book. I imagine she has more surprises to come.
This book was so good! It was so hard to put down. There was constantly something happening that made you want to read more and more. The way everything connects was very interesting and there were some great twists.
Talk about a page turner… this book showed up and so quickly pulled me into the world of Lynell. I found myself holding on and eager to see where her story would take her. With themes of family, trust, and right versus wrong, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat while also making you think on a deeper level. My only complaint was I would have liked to dive deeper into the characters a little more, rather than the quick back and forth. But all in all, I was sucked in so quickly and loved the dystopia created.
I loved this audiobook! Great premise, and I was hooked right from the first few chapters. The suspense is immediately provided and never lets up! I had the audiobook completed in just a few days. The narrator was excellent, capturing the drama and emotion as if she were describing her own story. The idea of The Registration is a strong one, and I would love to read more books about it if the author decides to serialise it.
Madison Lawson does an incredible job of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat in The Registration, a dystopian world where everyone has one legal murder and Lynell Mize has just heard a stranger register her. I had the privilege and pleasure of reading The Registration early and I was so swept up I read it in two days. Lawson balances exploration of ethical dilemmas, delivering well-placed details about the dystopian world of The Registration, all while managing the pacing of Lynell Mize trying to outrun her registration.
Perfect dive back into the dystopian genre! This is not my goto genre, but this was a great way to get back into it.
The Registration is perfect for fans of Hunger Games, Divergent, a hint of a murder mystery along with that thriller aspect. I absolutely loved the emotional connection in this book. Usually with dystopian genres, what I've experienced is that its a go go go situation and not much time to build a true connection.
The characters were super likable, they arent your usually teen MCs which just made me love this even more! The pacing of the book really helped me dive back into this genre perfectly. Soon to be a film? ummm yes please, I cant wait to see this on screen!
Huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy, all opinions are my own.
A stunning sci-fi mystery with a unique vision of a near-future America that hooks you from page one and doesn’t let go. Overflowing with creativity, action and twists I never saw coming, The Registration is not just riveting sci-fi but a dive into the psyche that explores love, politics, family and the darkest—and brightest—aspects of humanity.
Brief synopsis: It is the future in a world where everyone has the legal right to murder one person in their lifetime- all they have to do is register to kill the person. It’s called The Registration and a person gets 14 days to murder. While Lynell Mize is waiting in line to register the man who abused her as a child she hears her name called to be registered and now has 14 days to survive. Why does someone want her dead? Does she run or confront the man who wants her dead…
My thoughts: -This book had me hooked from the first chapter! I finished it in one sitting! -The concept of the Registration was so unique and so far from reality but at the same time you can definitely imagine a world where this could happen! -The entire time I was reading this book I could definitely image how great a movie will be based off of this book! -Overall if you love a thriller that has a unique concept in a futuristic world that keeps you flipping pages to find out what happens next you must check this one out!
Thank you so much Madison Lawson for sending me a copy! I definitely enjoyed it!
Thriller - This is a debt novel by @madisonlawson knocked it out of the park for me. New world meets, 1984, meets Jason Borne. This book is packed with female protagonist action, tough guys, a love story and new world order. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I binged it quickly. This story took me down the path of Lynell and her journey to find out who she is, the truth, and what justice means. Three cheers for this novel. @camcat_books **Thank you for my gifted ARC for my honest review. ** ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #bibliophile #bookstagram #blogger #thrillerbooks #madisonlawson #booktalkers #bookreviewer #booknerd #booklove #strongfemaleauthors
