The only way to read this book in English was a $2.99 Kindle edition so I bought it. After reading the first three books I just had to find out how the story ended. I’m grateful I was able to read it. It does feel funny owning it though and not the first three books and I doubt that I will ever reread it.
This fourth book’s English edition is self-published by the author and the translator. There are typos. I don’t understand why as I’m just a regular reader and could have corrected them prior to the book’s release. I also don’t know why there isn’t a traditionally published paper version since the series is so popular in Sweden, and my library does have the first three books so I’m sure they’d have this one too.
While I have this shelved as both children’s and young adult, in part because the author & translator mark this as being for ages 10-18, but as with book 3 I do think this is more of a young adult than a children’s book.
This book had an incredibly satisfying ending to the story of the Steiner sisters. I was very happy with the way things turned out. The 4 books story is an excellent coming of age tale. There is depth to all of the characters and all of the relationships. It’s a wonderfully done historical fiction story for young people, and for adults too. I learned quite a bit. It covered territory I hadn’t learned about in other Holocaust themed books.

Så var det slut och vilket sorgligt slut sen. Jag vill inte skiljas från Steffi och Nelli. Varför kommer det inte en bok med dem som vuxna så vi får veta vad det blev av dem? En stark 3:a.

The long war is finally over and now everything can return to normal. For Stephie Steiner, her little sister Nellie, her friend Judith and millions of other Jews, nothing will ever be the same. Mama is dead, Papa is missing- possibly dead and Nellie barely remembers Vienna and her Papa. All Nellie wants is to stay with her foster family in Sweden. Stephie is conflicted. Almost done with secondary school, Stephie wants to go to medical school and achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. The Relief Committee won't pay for more schooling for Stephie but Nellie has a secret plan to help her sister. Stephie won't stop searching for her Papa until she learns the truth. Then an old flame returns and Stephie's future plans become even more complicated.
This book should not have been published yet. It needs more editing and polishing before it can be released in hardcover. I noted several typos. I also felt that the ending was WAY too rushed. I flipped back a page to make sure I didn't miss anything. The conclusion should have been drawn out more and the epilogue taking place 4 years later to show us what happens to the characters in the future. The only other thing I did not like was the romance. It's clean-ish but there is some touching and a fade to black love scene that should NOT have taken place.
What I did really like was the character development, especially Nellie. Nellie has matured a bit now she's almost 13. She's still a bit selfish and bratty as most teenagers are but she has a good heart. My heart broke when she revealed her scanty memories of her father. Her story is very bittersweet. Nellie was too young to understand their removal to Sweden and the devastating effect of the war on her family and the Jewish population of Europe. In some ways Stephie tries to shield Nellie from these things but Nellie also doesn't really want to know. She has become Swedish and has adopted a very Swedish attitude towards the war. I knew exactly what the artist, Carita Borg, was up to painting Nellie, especially once the title of her exhibition was revealed. Stephie probably would have figured it out if she had known. Nellie is still young and innocent enough to crave adult attention and not understand artistic temperament.
Stephie could use a bit more maturity but she has grown a lot now she's a young woman of almost 18. I really didn't think her romance with Sven belonged in this story. It's obvious what kind of young man he is. His inability to live without money caused him to capitulate to his autocratic family's wishes, yet he's a wannabe bohemian artist. In short, he's a poseur and Stephie is blinded by infatuation. To his credit he tries to warn her and she doesn't listen. Sven just disgusts me. In all else I really admire Stephie's determination and her ability to see the bright side of things. She's still struggling with her identity. One one hand she wants to hold on to her past so she never forgets where she comes from, but on the other, she loves her foster parents and had finally adapted to the Swedish way of life. She is quite young to bear such burdens. I loved that she never gave up searching for Papa even when hope was gone.
Even Auntie Alma experiences some growth. I didn't like her in the previous novels because she was too weak to stand up to her husband. Her husband is a bully and a jerk. I feel sorry for Auntie Alma, actually. Auntie Marta is hardly in the story but she too experiences a bit more growth. Only Vera hasn't seem to changed much but she's more hardened by her experiences and motherhood. I miss the friendship between Stephie and May. I like May better than Stephie and I am sure she will succeed at whatever she chooses to do. Nellie's friend Sonia has matured a lot and at 13 she understands the value of Nellie's friendship and the girls have a special bond.
I also really liked how the author shows what life was like post-war and how many Jews were angry and bitter while everyone else celebrated. The author also shows what happened once people were liberated from what she calls concentrations camps (some of the characters were in death camps). While she never mentions gas chambers and mass graves or massacres, she does show skeletally thin people with shaved heads looking prematurely old and one character mentions a forced march from Auschwitz. There's a subplot involving Stephie's friend Judith that is absolutely
heartbreaking. I appreciated the realism of the situation.
This story lacks some of the charm of the previous two novels and feels more like a summary than a fleshed out novel. I was dying to know what happened so I'm glad I read it but I was expecting more.

Nu har jag läst alla fyra delarna om Steffi och Nelli. Två judiska levnadsöden under andra världskriget i Sverige. Vi skiljs åt strax efter krigsslutet. Särskilt första och sista delen är berörande och mycket läsvärda, trots att det rör sig om ungdomsböcker. Läs alla delar. Den sista överraskande mig.

Jag läste den här serien för första gången när jag bara var runt 10 år gammal. Den är lika bra nu som då, om inte ännu bättre. Jag kommer att bära med mig dessa böcker resten av mitt liv.

Очень понравился цикл этих небольших, но интересных и приятных книг про двух сестер-беженок из военной Вены. Истории про Вторую мировую всегда даются тяжело, но в этой гораздо больше о надежде, взрослении и взаимопомощи.
Особенно хорошо было слушать их зимой и погружаться в жизнь маленьких сонных деревушки на краю Швеции и большого города с его вечной суетой.
Старшая сестра Штеффи постепенно вырастает, и к концу четвертой книги уже ощутимо чувствует себя взрослой, учитывая темп жизни того времени. Все меняется, и они обе совершают ошибки, но в их судьба остаются люди, которые помочь: это их приемные семьи и родственники.
Я бы не назвала эти книги грустными, но и веселыми они точно не являются. Что-то между печалью и ожиданием нового, спокойного дня.

Eigenlijk best wel een heftig boek! Ik was het einde helemaal vergeten en nu ben ik echt geshockeerd dat ik dit allemaal hoorde op tienjarige leeftijd en dat ik er niet een beter persoon van ben geworden. Nu heb ik geen boeken meer om te lezen!!!

Annika Thor är ett geni, hennes böcker är helt fenomenala! Den här serien är fullständigt fantastisk med ett perfekt slut. Jag vill bara få läsa mer om de här människorna, få veta mer om vilka de är och vad som händer de i livet, men samtidigt är jag nöjd med hur denna kvartett avslutades. Så bra böcker!

Steffi fylls av glädje och firar tillsammans med sin studiekamrat Maj på Götaplatsen med resten av människorna som samlats för att höra på fredstal och sjunga. När de vänder sig om för att bana sin väg genom folkmassorna möter hon Svens blick. Tiden står som still men känslorna från förr börjar bubbla under ytan.
I den fjärde och sista boken får läsaren för första gången ta del av Nellis perspektiv. Hon närmar sig slutet av folkskolan och ska fortsätta i skolkök efter sommaren. Hon trivs hos tant Alma och farbror Sigurd men eftersom det äntligen har blivit fred kan Nelli inte undgå att undra: Vad händer nu? Nu behöver de inte längre ta hand om ett fosterbarn? En kväll överhör hon hur tant Alma och farbror Sigurd pratar och det blir tydligt att platsen hon familjen Lindberg inte länge är så självklar.

3. I am sad to be finishing this series and am of course disappointed in the ending, but other than that, this is a wonderful book. The translation is full of errors and typos, though.

This one felt rushed. More like the author was just giving a long summary rather than writing an actual story. And it was awkward. I realize that was due to it being translated from Swedish, but the editing process was apparently done really quickly. There were a bunch of obvious errors (my favorite being when she said that Nellie was going to have music lesions, rather than music lessons) and a lot of sentences just didn't sound like anything people would say. Yes it was translated from Swedish, but certain sayings do not carry the same meaning when you translate them. And a lot of sentences were just choppy. More than once I had to go back and read the previous few sentences to make sure I didn't miss something.
My biggest problem with this was that Stephie and Sven were like different people in this one. And I'm pretty sure it's because the author wanted to force them into the path that she wanted them to go without actually taking the time to make those things happen naturally. Their whole relationship in this book was shallow and fairly unrealistic for the characters in the previous books. This was supposed to be a story about 1945, and Stephie was acting like it was several decades later. I realize that people still slept around in the 40s, but it wasn't an open lifestyle like it is today. A girl like Stephie (in the previous 3 books) would not have just jumped into bed with anyone, and she would not have told anyone about it if she did. On top of that, she watched her friend get pregnant and be forced to marry someone she didn't love, and that would not have made her more eager to have sex. So the fact that she demands Sven sleep with her after a very short period of time was ridiculous. And the way she demanded it was childish and just idiotic: 'if you don't sleep with me right now, I'll never believe you love me'. Please. I thought she was supposed to be 18? 'Give me what I want right now or I won't believe you love me' is the logic of a very young child.
Sven was like a different character too. He was actually a good character in the first 2 books. He had some depth and he genuinely cared about Stephie and other things in the world. In this one, he basically had no personality other than sleeping around with anything in a skirt.
Not remotely believable for either one of them which really bothered me since other than the effects of WW 2, the Stephie/Sven story line was basically the biggest aspect of the entire series. I knew they would eventually get together, and I expected it to be a little cheesy, but I wasn't expecting it to be shallow, stupid, and basically a meaningless fling. It was especially pathetic that Stephie initially couldn't possibly imagine leaving Sweden because it would mean leaving Sven, and about 5 chapters later, she basically forgets all about him.
The main reason I wanted to read the last book was to find out what happened to Stephie's and Nellie's father. And yes, we do find out he's alive and that they'll be reunited, but I would have actually liked to see their reunion. We waited for the entire series for the girls to see their parents again, and it ends literally just before that happens. It was frustrating.
However, I am glad it was translated so I could actually know how it ended ....it just could have been a much better story.

Böckerna om Steffi och Nelli var mina absoluta favoritböcker när jag var runt 10. Sen gick jag över till andra böcker och nu är första gången på många år som jag återvänder. Och som jag älskar dem fortfarande! Såklart är språket enklare än det jag är van vid idag, men känslorna! Grät på exakt samma ställen nu som jag alltid har gjort. Och även om det är tydligt att det här är barnböcker är det intressant att läsa de senare böckerna, där Steffi är mer nära mig i ålder nu. Vi gick på gymnasiet på nästan samma ställe, bodde i samma område osv. Hög igenkänningsfaktor trots att hennes tid i Göteborg utspelar sig femtio år innan min.
Kan inte tacka Annika Thor nog för dessa pärlor som betydde så mycket för mig som barn och som jag alltid kommer bära med mig.

Sträckläste alla fyra böcker i serien och tycker verkligen att de borde läsas som en helhet. En och en fyller de ingen större funktion, [OBS] inte för att böcker behöver fylla en funktion [OBS], men det är först som en enhet de verkligen slår an. Karaktärerna får djup och känsla först när man får följa allihop genom alla år. Särskilt intressanta är karaktärna Judith och Vera, med sina viktiga, relevanta och sorgliga bakgrunder och öden. Allt detta gör det svårt att bedöma böckerna separat. Men vad som skiljer denna sista del från de övriga tre är att läsaren här får ta del av Nellis perspektiv, vilket är oerhört fint och jag önskar att hon hade fått vara berättare tillsammans med Steffi i de tidigare böckerna också. Rörande och värdig avslutning.

This is a breath taking book series. I followed Steffi's journey since the first one and felt as if I was her. I imagined myself far from my beloved ones, under the worst circumstance possible (war). I might felt like that because I moved to Sweden and I was a bit dislocated in the beginning. Fortunately I moved here for other reasons than war.
Anyway, while reading I used Steffi's shoes for and it felt so unfair... being apart from your roots because of your beliefs and costumes.
I'm not sure if they have this collection in Portuguese, my mother tongue, but specially now under a threaten of a fascist regime in Brazil I would very likely recommend this to be read at schools.

I'm not sure if they have this collection in Portuguese, my mother tongue, but specially now under a threaten of a fascist regime in Brazil I would very likely recommend this to be read at schools.

It's the fourth and final of this series. Since it's a Swedish book and I read it in Swedish, I don't know the English name of the series. Anyway, it's worth reading. This is my least favourite in the series. Steffi is older, so the tone of the book is different. It's still beautiful though. The war ends and everything comes to a close. In a way I wanted it to end differently, but mostly for selfish reasons. Even though it's not as good as its prequels, this book lies close to my heart.

Den här serien har varit helt enastående och underbar att läsa. Den har både varit djup och mörk att läsa men även lättsam och rolig. Det har varit ett nöje att följa Steffi och Nellis resa från små barn till unga vuxna människor. Hela tiden har kriget varit med i bakgrunden och färgat deras vardag och det var så skönt att freden äntligen kom.
En mycket bra skriven bokserie av Annika Thor. Rekommenderas starkt om ni inte redan har förstått det!

I would probably have given the whole serie five stars when I read it in middle school (over 10 years ago).
I read it in a collection book containing all four books. It's a lovely serie about two girls comming to Sweden during WWII. I remember carrying around the book, reading in odd places beacause I liked it so much.

I always felt like this last book was not as complete as the previous books. I felt like there was too many loose threads. This last book felt like there was no real deapth or conclusion to everything, it was only combed over lightly. But I still did enjoy it as a whole. I definitely heald up in many ways aswell.

Like Judith. She was left alone at a mental hospital which proceeded to give her electric shock treatment. We needed a conclusion. Yes, Stephanie (main character in the book) did write to judiths' brothers and they might pick her up. But there was too much questions left unanswered.
Stefanie som älskat samma kille igenom hela serien. Vi bara fick veta att hon haft andra dejter, vilket man hade nog velat läsa om mer. Vi fick inte följa med hela hennes resa in i vuxenlivet. Det kändes som ett hopp. Samt den hjärtesorgen hon måste kännt efter Sven. Jag saknade verkligen att få läsa och vara med i hennes bearbedningsprocess. Kändes abrupt att hon ba åkte iväg, man fick inte läsa sig in i hennes tankar till det djup en sådant stycke i en bok behöver.
Jag tycker vi alla förtjänade en femte bok. Att man inte fick följa med hela systrarnas livsresa. Det är jag nog mest besviken över.
Detta blev som en serie man läste som barn, som tonåring och nu som vuxen. Man förstår delar av boken på olika sätt speciellt när man läst den på olika stadier i sitt egna liv.
En helt underbar bokserie som tar upp mycket viktiga ämnen. Mer än vad jag kan radda upp. Den tar upp förhållanden man kanske inte tänkt på. Vilket är vad som gör den tilltalande för mig.
Men min största sorg är att vi inte fick en till bok om slutskedet i Nellys o Stephanies liv. Hur Nelly tog sig in i vuxenlivet och hur Stephanie navigerade ennu ett nytt land. Samt hur hon kunde leva ett normalt liv och vidare trotts de lass hon bar på.
Dynamiken i boken som jag reagera på och tyckte gjorde den intressant.
Klassföreståndaren på lärovärket Björk. Att hon var lesbisk och träffade ballerinan från Amerika. Att det skrevs runt 1997 är tidigt för såddant ämne.
Att Maj var lesbisk och gillade Stephanie. (Man hade velat veta hur hon navigerade det hela under den tidsperioden) skulle inte kännas lika uttjatat som ämnet är idag då det var en helt annan tid. Ja, man fick läsa att Maj på ett sätt sörjer att hon inte fick ha en romatisk relation till Stephanie men hon värderade den vänskapliga och alltid gjorde vad som var bäst för sin bästa vän och släppte taget. Men det var så mellan raderna allt det här.
Jag gillade att man fick läsa dynamiken mellan Alice och Stephanie. Hur judarna som har flera generationer och bosatt sig i andra länder kunde se ner på flyktingarna. Velat särskilja sig och blev besvärade av flyktingarna istället för att visa den empati man kanske förväntat sig att dem av samma religion skulle visat. Intressant.
Jag gillade att läsa om tant Alma och Märtas tankar i det tidiga stadiet i bokserien. Där de sade att tyskarna måste ju göra som de gör av en anledning och inte kan folket dem straffar vara helt oskyldiga för varför skulle man göra så då. Att man fick läsa den tankegång som gick runt i sverige och hur man rationaliserade och vände blicken ifrån situation innan den eskallerat hejdlöst. För då kunde man inte som helhet blunda mer, även om många fortfarande gjorde det.
Jag älskade att läsa om den gamla Sverige, gamla uttryck och lilla Göteborg som den såg ut då. Det var väldigt nostalgiskt. Intressant att läsa om Rota, hur ungdomarna höll sig sysselsatta då. Hur dem träffade varandra då. Hur man som ungdom förr, inte är så långt ifrån hur man tänker och är nu. Att det hette Lärovärket, hur svårt det var att komma in där och hur man annars hamnade i skolköket.
Lite sjukt att dra parallerna då till nu att ungdomar knappt kan några hushållas sysslor själva. Men då fanns det att man faktiskt gick i skolkök och lärde sig sådant. Att dåtidens fattiglapps områden i gbg, majorna och sandarna, nu är rikemans områden.

Fjärde och avslutande boken i serien. I den här får vi för första gången följa Nellis, den yngre systern, perspektiv halva tiden och Steffi resterande. De två systrarna är motsatser i mycket men framför allt lever de i två olika miljöer med Steffi i den moderna storstaden och Nelli kvar på ön mitt i havet. Dessa byten mellan omgivning och perspektiv är uppfriskande och välkomnat efter två böcker i Göteborg med endast Steffis jag att följa.
Kriget är nu slut och för Steffi innebär det att hon måste göra ett val om vart hon ska spendera sin framtid efter studenten. Hon slits mellan sin kärlek Sven, mannen vars familj hon var inneboende hos i bok två och som i ärlighetens namn verkar vara en självgod stropp, och jakten på sin försvunna far. Annika Thor använder detta för att gestalta Steffis resa in i det vuxna livet men även in i sin egna identitet som ung, judisk kvinna. Samtidigt visas dåtidens efterkrigstider väl upp med både sina för-och nackdelar.
Nelli brottas med känslan av utanförskap hos sin fosterfamilj samtidigt som Österrike och hennes pappa känns främmande. Boken lyfter karaktärens svåra känslor på ett sätt som gör att andra barn kan relatera till det och lyfter viktiga problem på ett lättillgängligt sätt.
Ett bra avslut på en bokserie jag tyckte mycket om! Rekommenderar starkt.

Das krönende Ende zu der Serie. Echt toll und auch irgendwie ein befriedigendes Ende, wenn nicht naürlich auch traurig. Man hat über die ganze Serie hinweg echt beobachten können wie sehr sich vor allem Steffi, die Protagonisting weiterentwickelt hat. Der Unterschied zwischen ihren noch echt kindischen Aktionen vom ersten Buch und jetzige Aktionen ist groß und sie hat sich sogar reflektiert, was echt zu der Charakterentwicklung beiträgt.
Generell finde ich dieses Serie echt toll und vor allem wertvoll. Es geht meiner Meinung nach eher generell um Krieg und Flüchtlinge, als wirklich um den zweiten Weltkrieg, aber ich denke man kann sagen, dass diese Buchreihe gleichzeit als Erinnerung dient wieso Kriege so schlimm sind, aber auch als Hoffnung für diejenigen, die flüchten müssen von schlimmen Ereignissen, da es ein gutes Ende genommen hatte und neben Tragik auch Hoffnung und Freude in den Büchern stattfand.
