Oh what fun Daring Duplicity is!
Victorian era England where woman are delicate creatures tied to their husbands, Stetson Goody is an independent thinking woman. Following her inclination for problem solving, Stetson creates her own detective agency fronted by the mysterious Xavier Wellington.
The novel is comprised of different cases offered to Mr. X to solve. The mini mysteries are lightweight however the intrigue is how they are solved and the extent to which Stetson must alter herself.
In chapter one you are immediately drawn into the world of the detective by the excitement of Mr. X apprehending a fleeing criminal. The excitement and action holds your interest throughout the novel.
Lane’s writing style is reminiscent of the great mystery writers Christie and Doyle with the detective seeing and deducing what others do not. She paints a vivid picture of Victorian England including the morals and societal stratum. Lane’s writing puts you on the heels of Stetson allowing you the first person insight into the mysteries and her love life.
Daring Duplicity is an engaging and fun read which should not be missed.

A woman with the qualities of a Sherlock Holmes, set in Victorian Britain, sounds intriguing but there is a major caveat.

In all five novellas that are combined into one book around the protagonist Stetson Goody, the pattern that is used is repeated for the most part. Goody gets a new case, there are many descriptions of the setting, props, atmosphere and people, Goody walks to the crime scene in disguise, knows who the culprit is without further ado, and the novella ends with a virtually empty promise of a wlw romance that barely happens.

That being said, Edale Lane has shown some high quality writing mixed with a crime mystery plot without suspense. She is great at creating dialogue, setting and the atmosphere of Victorian Britain. So, I would have loved nothing more than gushing, but the criminal cases which are mere accessories, and the complete lack of suspense simply ruin too much here.

I would have loved to see this work, Stetson who finds her lover in such a rigid environment, and in addition to that, see her solve some tricky mystery. However, to achieve this, the book would have needed a completely different structure. The five novellas combined into one might be the problem here, because Edale Lane could not combine a nice romance and a complex mystery into these short novellas/long short stories.

I must admit that it made me sad to see this happen, because the protagonist is likable, and another character, Evelyn, is a great addition that helped show the slight promise of a growing romance.

In the end, neither the romance part nor the woman sleuth solving mysteries worked well enough for me.

Due to the lively descriptions of the setting and the nice dialogues especially between Stetson and Evelyn, this is a 3 out of 5 stars title for me.

Very, very clever!

Fans of Sherlock Holmes are sure to enjoy Edale Lane's Wellington Mysteries series. Daring Duplicity includes the first five novellas centered around Stetson Goody, a Victorian Era private investagor.

The intriguing aspects about Stetson? She's a woman, excelling at a trade which takes cunning, smarts, and courage - during a time when most women are living under the thumbs of the men in their lives. AND she's queer to boot!

I love a powerful heroine, and Ms. Goody is easy to admire. She does what she must to succeed in her career, and with a combination of brains and brawn, outsmarts the baddies at every turn.

Edale Lane writes a mighty fine mystery and paints a colorful picture of life in Victorian England. Plus, I enjoyed the way her love life evolves over the course of the five novellas. Brava!

The entire audiobook is beautifully narrated by Jennifer Lewis. It's clear how much fun Ms. Lewis is having portraying Stetson Goody, and her lively performance is most enjoyable.

an audiobook copy of Daring Duplicity was generously provided by the author for the purpose of my honest review, all opinions are my own

This was a great light read. I loved these short mysteries and how Xavier Wellington was able to solve them. The Victorian backdrop was fun and very reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes. I’ve always enjoyed reading lady detective mysteries but this took it up a notch with Stetson and her knack for costumes. Very well written and definitely something I’d pick up again!

“Daring Duplicity” is a volume of five short stories that brings an adventurous and smart lady, Stetson Goody, to the page. It’s a time where women still struggle with independence and having the freedom to be themselves.

“The Blackmailed Female”
Jewel Ashton, the well to do daughter of Lord Cecil Ashton of Parliament, has been caught in a moment of indiscretion. She seeks the help from the elusive PI, Xavier Wellington. She meets with Wellingtons assistant, Stetson Goody, who get’s the case in motion. Sparks also start to fly between Stetson and Jewel.

“The Bludgeoned Ballerina”
Even with heart break, Stetson Goody, continues with her business and handles the potential clients that arrive at the office. Sophie Evans a ballerina with much potential has become a victim of murder. Evelyn Merritt, pianist, and close friend to Sophie Evans has great concerns about the case being looked into. Her attempts at finding an investigator leads her to Wellington. Stetson is taken with the case as it involves the love she has of theatre and hopefully a special connection with Evelyn.

“The Wayward Wife”
Archibald Godwin, half owner of Godwin and Gordon Shipping Lines, brings a sensitive case to Wellington. Stetson has no choice but to have Wellington address Godwin in- person. Seems that Godwin want’s his young wife, Catherine, of the Cadburys, followed. Stetson get’s the case rolling and photos are even provided as evidence. But Stetson feels guilty when Catherine becomes victim of murder. Stetson tries not to let the business of murder get in the way of the gradual friendship with Evelyn.

“The Lost Night”
Reverend Calvin Fenimore has a loving family. He finds his life in peril and could lose everything. He’s woken up beside a dead woman and has no memory of what took place. Once again, Stetson takes the case to Wellington and they find themselves in a horrid situation of human trafficking. It will take more than Wellington to try and solve the case.

“The Perilous Train Ride”
A close friend of Wellingtons, Lord Eldon Galdstone seeks out Wellington to investigate the murder of his Uncle Thomas at the estate in Warwickshire. Wellington not being available to travel offers to send his nephew Jonathon McGrath. Stetson has decided to invite Evelyn on this short vacation to Warwickshire. On the train, Stetsons past has crept up on her and she fears what may take place. She’s also kept an eye on two suspicious men. One case turns into two with a train robbery and a murder at the estate to be solved.

Edale Lane brings five well written, Victorian, short stories from England. The adventures will take the readers into the Rookeries, workhouses, docks along the Thames and many other places. There’s mystery, murder, adventure, action, various emotions, humor and romance. There’s an abundance of tools, weapons, camera and film developing, and all types of gadgets from the era. There’s all one needs to create any colorful disguise that’s required. “Daring Duplicity” introduces all types of characters: PI Xavier Wellington; ballerina, Clara Pedersen, Albert Smith, Officer Tyler Tidwell, Widow Winters, Dr. Wells and Jonathan McGrath.

Most of all we will hear of the fascinating, shy but brave character of Stetson Goody. She’s a woman before her time in trying to make a way for herself in a mans world. Her life of growing up in the theatre and how she got the name of Stetson is romantic in a cute way. Her story will also take us to the theatre with Evelyn Merritt and the music and burlesque performances of the era.

Two other characters that are an outstanding addition to the story are: Andrew, Stetson’s brother, who will always keep her secret and be by her side anytime she needs him. And Scotland Yard, Inspector Rueben Perry, he doesn’t know the secret but whenever Xavier Wellington puts out the call Perry will be there. I have to mention the adorable Sebastian!

“Daring Duplicity” is outstanding, it has something for everyone and I was impressed and entertained with this first time read for me by Edale Lane. It was a wonderful surprise! I wonder what interesting adventures the author has planned for Stetson Goody next! The cover art by Enggar Adirasa gives the novel just the right touch of mystery.

I really enjoyed this book, the stories just flowed off the page and once started I didn’t want to put it down.
There were a couple of very minor things that didn’t always ring true. During the fights guns seem to get dropped far too often and there a few little things that show the author isn't British e.g. 'London Station'.

Narration: 4 / 5 – Solid performance, though the character voices weren’t quite there for me (I prefer more differentiation).
Story: 2/5 – Trite and boring.

Unfortunately, I have to say that this was just boring. I don’t know if these are what they call “cozy mysteries”, but there was no mystery. This would have been better as a singular book – rather than a collection of novellas – with a deeper mystery that spanned the novel and wasn’t excessively obvious and simple.

I found each mystery to be far too simple – either the MC immediately knew who the culprit was or clues and answers just fell into her lap. Sure, she had some sleuthing skills, but those weren’t utilized all that much, so it was all just very trite. Even with the action scenes, the book never managed to convey any tension or gravity for me.

Additionally, while the characters were likable, they were a bit shallow as well, and there was soooooo much tell and very little show (in both the relationship/personal development, dialogue, and mystery solving). Characters frequently thought very long, blatantly explanatory thoughts, and I’m sitting here like “No way! Tell me how you really feel!” *eye roll*

All in all, I think the multi-novella format hurt the overall story. I also think that Edale Lane’s writing style, while mostly quite good, may just not be for me as I noticed the excessive description and explanatory thoughts happening A LOT in Heart of Sherwood as well. I may give her work another go sometime, but I’ll go in with low expectations.

An ARC copy was given to me from BookSirens for a honest review.

This was a very entertaining reading. It is a couple of crime stories. Each story is solved by Stenson Goody. She leaves in Victorian era and created a fake person Xavier Wellington, which "owned" a detective agency.

I liked the realistic view of the era. The searching from Stenson Goody after equal minded women and the society problems, which are pictured in the stories. Another very good book from the author. Can´t wait for more.

I even dithered giving three stars here, it really is only a 2.5

We are talking historical fiction here, set in Victorian London. It would at least have been appropriate, if the characters would have spoken English as it was spoken at the time with proper conjugation of irregular verbs and less current American quips in the dialogues. I am a great fan of Ann Perry and her detective novels set in Victorian London. Her characters are using the terminology and choice of phrases current at the time.

Detectives in plain clothes who investigated crimes, nowadays called CID, were only introduced in 1877 after a major corruption scndal in London's police. Up to then it were higher officers of the different units belonging to the station in charge of the place of the crime.

A can of sardines, well, while those actually were probably available in London around 1850, they came only from Brittany, as the French had a monopoly on them. They were a luxury item and I doubt that a character as careful of her funds as Stetson Goody would have spent money on an expensive luxury item for a cat, who'd have been just as happy with the head of a fresh mackerel, herring or similar available from a fish monger for a lot less.

A lot of hard to believe things in this novel bothered me during reading it, so, no, I am not that well impressed.

9/10

This book was recommended to me by a GR friend and I’m happy that I found out about it because I doubt I would’ve found it on my own.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but mysteries and sapphics are always a good mix imo so I finally got to it

and

actually read the whole book in one night without noticing.

It’s something like Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes I guess but it’s a girl in this period extraordinary detective role. There is a couple of different stories in the book which I wasn’t expecting since it’s already a short book. It was still fun but expectingly not very indepth with anything. While the romantic side was cute (it didn’t really have me convinced tbh), the short mystery stories were a breath of fresh air.

/// note ///

Sure you can use gaff but if you miss some very obvious sayings it’s bound to break my illusion of the story really being set in UK. Of course this isn’t much of a big deal since I doubt anyone but the British and those familiar with the UK culture will notice honestly. So, yes, there are a few mistakes I picked up but there’s still a lot of work put into the language.

Hopefully next year I’ll be reading the second part!

This is a collection of short novellas featuring Xavier Wellington, a private detective in Victorian England. Wellington is really Stetson Goody who has to pretend to be Mr. X's assistant, because no one would consult a female detective. The short stories are separate tales but they are in chronological order. We see Stetson's private life evolve through the book. I like the stories in that we are immersed into the Victorian age. We see the challenges women have to go through in that era. But the cases are not that intricate. They are resolved very quickly, which is probably because of the length of each novella. This does not take away that this is a light, quick read.

Edale Lane has created another amazing historical fiction series with Daring Duplicity. This collection of 5 consecutive short stories following Stetson/Wellington as she solves mysteries and follows her passions is stunning. Each story enthralls and together they make a marvelous first step into the Wellington Mysteries series.
The mysteries are entertaining and nicely developed. I enjoyed following Stetson as she used all of her tricks, skills, and smarts to get the job done. I loved how each story felt unique and how seamlessly they fit together.
The characters are well crafted and engaging. Especially Stetson who I could not get enough of. Smart, crafty, clever, determined, romantic, versatile Stetson is a master of disguise, a skilled and accomplished detective, and a hopeless romantic. The characters of this story both major and minor are so well rounded. From Stetson and her love interests to the thwarted criminals, these characters are marvelous.
The romance is sweet and slow. Stetson is an extremely observant and intelligent woman with no gaydar whatsoever (hilarious). She starts out believing she will never be able to find the love she craves because she is only attracted to women. There are two romantic interests and I really enjoyed how Lane handled and developed both of them.
This Holmes inspired historical fiction is thoroughly entertaining. I loved every exciting mystery and every tenderly romantic moment. Well paced, fantastically written, with a story that will suck you in and hold you tight, Daring Duplicity is a superb collection that will satisfy yet leave you wanting more.

Five novellas about a Victorian sapphic detective! That was all it took for me to want to read this book! Each mystery was entertaining and a fun light read. The author uses commentary on classism of the time period to ground the novellas in the world she is building for her heroine, Stetson. There are also two romances. I was worried about this at first, but I didn’t need to be. Jewel needs assistance uncovering a blackmailer in the first novella and she and Stetson start a romance which isn’t meant to last. The writing makes this clear. By the second novella the two have broken up, but Stetson meets Evelyn, who is her love interest for the rest of the interconnected novellas. While the affair with Jewel was full of passion and quickly built, made even more exciting by Stetson rescuing Jewel when she’s kidnapped, the romance with Evelyn is slow building and clearly meant to last. Stetson and Evelyn meet when Evelyn hires Detective Wellington (Stetson’s alter ego) to uncover the person who murdered her lover Sophie. So when they meet Stetson is still emotionally dealing with her breakup with Jewel whole Evelyn is grieving. This is dealt with deftly and in an ultimately satisfying way that doesn’t bog down the quick pace of the novellas. Jewel and Evelyn even met and team-up in the last novella!

There are also plenty of disguises and gadgets that Stetson employs to help her solve the cases that are brought to Wellington. The fight scenes are well-written and easy to follow and it was interesting to see how Stetson’s understanding of people helped her solve each case differently.

Ah, this was just deligthful! An intrepid Victorian sleuth solving mysteries, saving damsels in distress and apprehending dastardly criminals - with a twist. Because the protagonist of this collection of five novellas is not your run-of-the-mill private detective plying their trade in Victorian Era London. Stetson Goody has never been interested in fitting into the restricted roles conventional English society of the time would allow for a woman, so she has turned the acting talent she inherited from her mother into playing the redheded bombshell assistant and public face of the fictional Xavier Wellington, private detective extraordinaire - along with Wellington himself on the rare occasions that he needs to make an appearnce, as well as a myriad of other characters both male and female she masquerades as at one time or another in her clever crime-solving endeavours. Keeping the fiction alive is not all that easy when the possibility of romance comes into play, however...

It wasn't until somewhere around the middle of the book, so somewhere between the second and third of these stories, that Stetson's exploits really had me hooked, but this turned out to be a massively entertaining read that combines clever Sherlock Holmes-style mystery solving with some delightful F/F romance. I'm definitely game for more of Stetson's exploits.

"I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review of Daring Duplicity: a Victorian, wlw, novel. It features ace detective Xavier Wellington and assistant Stetson Goody. This fun book is five short stories and each one brought me deeper into the Xavier Wellington, world. 1. The Blackmailed Female 2. The Bludgeoned Ballerina 3. The Wayward Life 4. The Lost Night and 5. The Perilous Train Ride. The nature of each mystery built the desire to read more. I grew along with the characters and found romance and five well-done who-done-its. The book also illustrates the attitude toward women of the time, maybe anytime argh! The many adventures drive the story along and the love begins. This one brought happy tears to my eyes. The book showed gentle growth and love blossom in a relationship. My next read will be the prequel Arson & Lace (The Wellington Mysteries #0.5).

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. What a fun, clever read. Engaging, page-turning and full of intricate characterization, this is one of the first books I’ve read in a while that I couldn’t put down. Stetson is a delightful, complex protagonist. I loved the idea of Xavier Wellington, and how Stetson’s professional responsibilities and personal life intertwined during a time where WLW relationships were dangerous. Additionally, the mysteries were well-plotted and clever, with satisfying endings.

The structure of novellas was fun, even for someone who doesn’t always connect with shorter stories. Further, I listened to this as an audiobook and loved the narrator, particularly the British accent.

I adored these stories. Stetson was fantastic, her cases interesting, and her romances sweet.
While it would be rather hard to miss Stetson is a lesbian, I appreciated that it is not the predominant fact about her in the story. Mostly she’s a brilliant detective, a suburb actor, and someone who knows how to hold her own in a scrap, as well as when it’s best to retreat to fight another day.
The romance story lines are secondary, but important, with the love interests well fleshed out.

Jennifer Lewis did an amazing job as narrator, slipping effortlessly between not only all the usual characters, but also all the roles and accents Stetson puts on throughout the book, all while still managing to keep Stetson a recognisable voice for the listener.

I’m very much looking forward to more adventures with Stetson!

Stetson Goody is the female Sherlock Holmes, but she may have more friends and associates (and a better love life than I recall Sherlock having). She’s a master of disguises because she has to pretend to be male often. This volume is a series of five separate novellas that go in chronological order. I enjoyed the stories but I was often perplexed at how quickly she knew who the criminal was. It all made sense each time as she explained it to her audience, but I expected her to have to work harder at finding the culprit. I was also puzzled by her memories of Jewel who appeared in the first story. In a later story when Stetson refers to Jewel, their relationship seemed to be longer than it was in the initial tale. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this. It will be a good replacement series for her Night Flyer series. I was pleased to see there is already a second volume.

Although I previously purchased the ebook, I received an audiobook from the author. I enjoyed the narrator’s version. Her voice (and her accent) brought a different feel to the stories from how I read them. She made the location feel more real to me.

I got this book immediately after reading the synopsis, I really love a good mystery/crime fiction! The story is sectioned into cases almost line short stories in a way. I didn’t really like the first one I thought it was super rushed and other then adding conflict I don’t really know what it’s purpose was, but after that I really loved it! I already have the next book and am really excited to see where the story goes!

4 stars. This was absolutely delightful. I loved the writing of this and the setting of England during the Victorian era. It was very well done and atmospheric. The main character, Stetson, is an actress and detective and she is such an interesting and awesome character. She runs a detective agency but she dresses as a man, Xavier Wellington, to be able to solve the cases and it absolutely fascinating. She goes in disguise as a bunch of different characters and it was fun. She’s great at her job.

There are five mysteries in this and they are all great reads. I also appreciated the subtle romance between Stetson and Evelyn. They were adorable together. Overall, this was such a fun read and I really hope there will be more books coming soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed the audible version of this collection of 5 victorian era mysteries involving the daring sapphic detective Stetson Goody!
Edale Lane has crafted an intelligent and unconventional MC in Stetson. As Stetson solves each of the mysteries, we are introduced to her passions and the path she has chosen to follow on her life's journey in finding love.
The narration by Jennifer Lewis is perfection as she portrays Stetson and the various characters so distinctly. Her storytelling is excellent as each layer of Stetson is exposed and the drama that is experienced in each new adventure.
This is an entertaining collection of mysteries with the bonus of finding love. I am looking forward to volume 2.

This book was a free copy from the author. I have never read any of this author’s books, but that will change in the future. This was a delightful series of episodes detailing the mysteries of Stetson Goody, aka Xavier Wellington. The tales take place in Victorian England with a Sherlockian presentation. I do hope the author publishes more similar stories. They were fun twist on with the gender bending Stetson and her affinity for the fairer sex. The narrator was new to me, but her portrayal sealed the deal with authenticity. I can recommend.

Who knew?

A brilliant written set of stories, written to entice the reader to flip the page or flip the finger on their Kindle. The author has created a set of chapters meant to be enjoyed and the heart thumping and the breath gasping with excitement. A Victorian detective with uncanny reasoning and a female. A very knowledgeable woman. I hope you enjoyed this book as much as I did. Enjoy!

Excellent series of short stories which run chronologically, each a mix of intrigue, action and romance.

Although there's some artistic license taken on some historical elements and Stetsons's romance with Evelyn isn't a major arc, the stories are engaging. The writing is atmospheric, and Stetson is an inimitable and memorable character. Looking forward to reading more!

A delightful read! This has been a busy time for me and one of the things I loved about this book was that there were a series of cases, many solved in the space of the two or three chapters I had time to read at the end of the day. The many faces of Stetson Goody were fun to discover.

This is pretty much Victorian Remington Steele but with a lesbian Laura Holt and no pesky man sneaking in to take over her agency. It's cozy and fun, a series of short cases rather than one novel length. A little romance for extra flavor makes for a delicious snack of a book.
