Returning to my hometown of Meadows Ridge, I’m just as broken as the day I left.

I’m no longer the teenager who had everything at his fingertips. All it took was one moment to turn the world as we knew it into a painful memory.

I deserve the nightmares plaguing me.

Then there’s her, Riley Parker—the woman I left behind, my bleeding heart still in her hands. The hurt and anger in her doe eyes is justified. But I’m determined to prove to her that deep down, I’m still the same Cooper Graham she once loved.

Will I be able to get off this path of destruction, or am I doomed to live with the scars branded on my soul forever?

Trigger Warning: Scars is an angsty and emotional second chance romance. There is discussion of self harm in the past in this book.

Sadly, it didn’t touch my heart as I thought it would…
I had many expectations, since it was an angsty and emotional story, which were not met.
The only scenes that did sadden me were when Tanner and the Coach passed away.

When you have broken up with another person yet your deep feelings remain the same, you don’t go around seeing others.

Anyway, Cooper returned to his hometown and his feelings towards Riley were as strong as before abandoning her.
I didn't really see any redemption for his actions.

The secondary characters were a wonderful addition to the story - which was very well written.

Holy shit. You guys are not ready for this.

This review is brought to you by Kleenex.

I’ll set the mood a little before I go into the specifics of my review. I was a sobbing mess by the end of the prologue. And IT.NEVER.STOPPED. My best friend during the hours in which I read this book were tissues. Lots and lots of tissues.

Stefanie is hands down my favourite author of all time. The “I Never” series lives in my heart and soul. I probably couldn’t even explain in words just how much I love those books. So it’s safe to say, when I learned 7 months ago that she had another book coming out, I was excited. But that excitement quickly morphed to “fearcitement” which you guessed it, is a mix of fear and excitement. Heck, I’ve coined the term just for her. Anyway, once she started Austin Powers laughing all over Instagram and Facebook about how much we were going to cry with this one, I was scared. So f*%king scared.

Scars is truly in my opinion a story about forgiveness, love, friendship and grief. And you don’t experience those emotions in parts, it’s all there, all the time. This isn’t a story where you deal with the sadness and then it gets happy…the sadness lingers. You just learn to accept it along with the characters. I wish I could say this is about Cooper and Riley, but it isn’t. This is as much Tanner’s story as it is theirs.

Cooper, Riley and Tanner will destroy you, make you laugh, give you a headache from crying, but also make you smile with your heart super full. There wasn’t a single aspect of this book I didn’t love. The characters - main or not, the plot, the writing, the emotions, all of it was a 10 star read for me.

P.S.

Listen, I cried a lot. Like A LOT. I was actually crying when I started writing this review. There are some characters like people, Emmett (iykyk) for me; that you’ll never forget. Like ever. And after this book, I’ve added Tanner to that list. Ironic that both those characters for me come from the same author, but I must be a sadist because the second she mentions she’s releasing something, I’m starting a countdown lol Stefanie, once again, you’ve ruined me in the best way possible.

“This one that has her undivided attention, though, is the one on my chest over my heart—a baseball surrounded by angel wings and the number twelve written in the ball’s stitching.”

“I know that sounds dumb, but for that moment, listening to his voice message, I could pretend that he was still alive and would call me back.”

“F$&k, I miss my best friend”

PPS. Go find your best friends, and love them as hard as you can. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.

I had no idea going into this book how much the story was going to wreck my emotions! The characters are truly amazing, every single one of them. There were deep subjects throughout, like death and self-harm, but they are all so wonderfully written that even though the mood of the book shifts, it never overpowers the story. I highly recommend reading this with a box of tissues next to you because you will need them to get through the gut-wrenching scenes of love and loss.

When finished with the book I reflected on life and how short it truly can be and never want to take it for granted. Let go of the grudges, let yourself heal, and love with your whole heart ❤️

4.5 star rating, thanks to Stefanie Jenkins for an advanced copy for my honest review.

I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read an arc of this book.

Instructions to read this book:
Step 1: Make sure you have plenty of tissues with you.
Step 2: ensure you have a gallon of water beside you to make up for all the tears you will shed.
Step 3: do whatever you need to do to be comfortable.
Step 4: read

This book hurts. I haven’t ugly cried so much and I had to press my hand against my mouth to hide the sobs. It’s angsty, raw, heartfelt, relatable, rips your heart out of your chest rips it to shreds sets it on fire buries it six feet underground before giving it back and you foolishly want to give it back for more torture.

“I’m kissing every moment you needed me and I wasn’t there. Let me kiss them, please.”

That line broke me. I had to press my palms to my mouth and close my kindle to take a breather because that moment. That moment was everything and it gutted me. I did so well up until that point and then everything made me cry.

I devoured this book in three hours and it’s been a while since I’ve done that. The characters will draw you in and the small town vibes will make your heart melt.

Cooper and Riley have my heart in a chokehold and I don’t want it back.

Cooper, Riley and Tanner are graduating high school and embarking on their futures. Cooper and Tanner have been best friends since they were little. Cooper has found the love of his life in Riley. The three of them have their futures all figured out until one moment changes everything.

Stefanie Jenkins writes a beautiful story about forgiveness and second chances. It's a story about going home, facing your biggest regret, believing in yourself and fighting for what you want.

Cooper needs to learn to love himself and who he has become Scars and all.

Stefanie is an author who’s words come to life when you read them. Cooper, Riley, Tanner, and Austin will have you crying some major ugly tears.

From the first page, you are enveloped into this story. You are so consumed by their feelings that you find you are holding your breath waiting to see what will happen next. This is clearly without a doubt my favorite book by Stefanie, but God, they are all amazing. Have a box of tissues handy, you will need them with this beautiful story of pain and love. Well done Stefanie, well done!

Stefanie is back with another book that tugs at the heart strings and will have you either full on crying or getting teary eyed.

Scars depicts an emotional second chance romance between two high school sweethearts, Cooper, and Riley, but it is so much more than that. This is really a story of coming to terms with and moving on with life after immense grief and whilst the grief is experienced by all characters Cooper takes centre stage. I loved the slightly more in depth focus on Cooper in this book, it isn’t often a romance novel focuses more on it’s male lead, so not only did it make this book stand out more but it allowed for deeper exploration of the grieving process.

Cooper was a fantastic hero. I enjoyed his playful and flirty side which really brought him to life. He was a character who struggled a lot with the emotion that he was feeling and had convinced himself that he was broken. However, to everyone around him it was obvious he was still the same person and it was nice to see him start living life again. Riley was a strong, compassionate, and loving heroine. I enjoyed her interactions with the other characters and learning about how she too had come to terms with her grief and moved on. She has past struggles that come to light and I admired the depiction of self-harm that is present in this book. It is dealt with well and didn’t appear to be included for the sake of it.

When Cooper returns home 6 years after leaving it isn’t long before the few intense interactions he has with Riley, and some jealously has him realising she’s the only thing to ever make sense in his life and he needs her back. Riley however, is furious with Cooper and years of hurt come spilling out. It isn’t long before they are back together, and the relationship does move a little quick, but it works. Cooper and Riley are meant for one another and having never fallen out of love the pacing works, especially when the romance isn’t all this book is about.

To accompany Cooper and Riley’s journey is a whole host of secondary characters who steal the show when they appear. I already have a favourite and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that three of the secondary characters get their own books because I need more from them all.

The themes of grief, forgiveness, struggle, and love are present throughout the entire book. Stefanie doesn’t hold back, nor does she quickly resolve any of the challenges that the characters face. This book is emotional, I laughed, cried, and at times didn’t know what emotion I’d feel next. The need for sleep is the only reason I put this book down and I’m so glad it is almost here for everyone to read. Fans of Stefanie will love it and for new readers it shows her talent and slight enjoyment in making her readers cry.

Arc provided by the author, the thoughts here are entirely my own.

⚾️ angst and drama

This book has so many other interwoven story lines and secondary characters yet it still feels effortless. I fell in love with the town and the main chord of the friendship between Cooper, Riley, and Tanner. I definitely shed some tears as the story charted through trauma, grief, hope, and forgiveness, with an overwhelming tone of love.

The characters are hilarious and witty while also insightful and endearing and just so freaking real and relatable. You’ll be laughing out loud one minute and running for the tissue box the next. And the HEA. Sobbing. 🫶🏻😭

I wish I had adequate words to describe how much I loved this one but phew. I am actually speechless. You need this book.

When I tell you I am 👀 Stefanie for book two. 🤣

Angsty, emotional, heartbreaking, and heart-lifting...this beautifully written story has etched an indelible scar that will remain on my heart and soul forever.

Stefanie pens an emotionally moving story of friendship, love, grief, forgiveness, and the journey back home. Like scars left on the skin, it reminds you of the things we live through and the strength it takes to overcome it.

In the small town of Meadows Ridge North Carolina, sweethearts Cooper Graham and Riley Parker alongside with their best friend Tanner Hayes were on top of the world until the unthinkable happened and drastically altered the course of their lives. In a single moment their hopes, dreams, and aspirations were shattered...

Years later after putting himself on a self destructive path, Cooper has returned home ready to try and make things right for himself, his family, and especially with Riley. The only problem is that they aren't the same kids they once were and the past years of heartache, pain, and regret have taken their their toll on both.

Life may have thrown Cooper the ultimate curveball but, he's determined to show himself and Riley that he's still the same man he once was. The only man who loves her to the stars and back....

Grab your kleenex because reading this
story is an unforgettable experience. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be an outright emotional wreck and yet through it all...you'll find that happiness and joy once again. Gahhhhh...the feelings and emotions you get from reading this book are just simply amazing! Cooper and Riley had my heart from the very first page until the last. This story is so DAMN GOOD!

It's secondary cast of characters just added those wonderful moments of humor and heart to the overall story! From coach's to Mrs. Graham's words of wisdom. I adored Austin for being Riley's rock. That best friend who was always there for her
and the shoulder she could always lean on. Ace...OMG..he made me laugh out loud over his shenanigans but, it's how he's unconditionally there for Cooper that made me love him!

From beginning to end this story had a hold on my heart that refused to let go! I can't even begin to express how much I loved this book. Get this heartfelt gem on your TBR NOW! It's a beautiful story that I can't recommend enough! 😘❤️

This book gave me a lot of mixed feelings and I guess I completely lived with the characters. In the beginning I found the book moving really slower than what I expected from a slow burn Romance. But the moment I finished fifty percent of the book, I wasn't able to book it down at all. Cooper and Riley had a different type of love for each other.

COOPER - He felt guilty and left his hometown. I think each one has a different way of overcoming their grievances. No one could blame him for leaving the town but I wanted to hold him by his shirt collar and question him for leaving his poor girl Riley. His appearance could take anyone staring at him to heaven. I think I would go into detail of how much I drooled over him and I'll leave it to readers to know that as they read this book.

Riley - She's highly stubborn about what she wants and her persistence made me completely admire her. I almost cried knowing that she was always stalking her man even if he left her. I always felt like she deserved better than Cooper but then I'm glad when he turned out to be what she needed or deserved in the end.

I missed Tanner so much. I'm sure everyone who reads this book will feel the same about him. How can I forget to praise Austin. It would be amazing to have a friend like Austin, he protected Riley in the best manner he can during the absence of Cooper in her life.

Thanks a ton for this Emotional ARC. Riley and Cooper are now occupying a bigger place in my heart. Before picking the book I had no idea this book would tear me down but the moment I finished this book I felt like some tears were completely worth it.

This is the first book I've read of Stefanie's and I'm obsessed! Obsessed with the cover and the entire book. This book made me feel so many emotions. I laughed, cried, was happy, sad and everything in between.

I love how Stefanie wrote in flashbacks throughout the chapter instead of writing each chapter as a different point in time. It made it feel like you were in that character's head feeling what they were feeling at that time. If you are looking for a baseball romance to add to your TBR, I suggest you run and read this one ASAP! It is available now on KU, but the cover is stunning so you should just add it to your shelf 😍

Thank you Stefanie for the ebook ARC! ❤️ Thank you @chapters.and.charcuterie for introducing me to Stefanie.

I warn you, this book wastes very little time and sets right to doing its best to inflict some new scars on your own heart and trust me it succeeds. Cooper and Riley's story has a raw, painful genuineness to it that makes it easy to connect with and for some readers this could make this a challenging book to read. At its heart this book is an extremely angsty emotional romance that will definitely have you up in your feels, but it is also a very powerful read that deals with much deeper subjects like loss, grief, guilt, and self-harm. If you are looking for light and fluffy, you need to keep looking, but if you want meaty and moving, this book is just what you are looking for. This is my unbiased, unsolicited review.

This woman knows how to tear your heart out and put it back together. Scars is just another amazing example of this. I mean who else can accurately represent the process of going through grief while showing that every person processes things in their own way? Cooper has had a hard blow dealt to him. He runs to try and escape the pain, but finds himself back in his hometown only things aren't the way they were when he left. His best friend is gone and the woman he once loved has seemingly moved on. Or has she?

Seriously, dive into this one and have your tissues ready!

This is Cooper and Riley’s story and I loved it! I just cannot get enough of these second chance romances! Be prepared for some tears and some difficult to read scenes. But it all comes together in a great love story. This story is about loss and forgiveness. Cooper carries so much guilt and it weighs him down. It caused him to leave everyone he knew behind and never look back. This story was beautifully written but prepared because the heavy emotional stuff doesn’t let up from beginning to end. Second chance is my favorite trope and this one by Stefanie Jenkins is a can’t miss!

Is it a Stefanie Jenkins book if you don’t cry? There were quite a few emotional scenes for me but as always Stefanie somehow manages to put your heart back together. It’s a second chance romance but also a second chance at life, at mending friendships and family relationships. I’d been looking forward to this book since Stefanie started teasing about and I’m hoping we’ll see more of the side characters in the future.

Cooper struggles to deal after an awful accident and leaves town, avoiding everyone he knew for years, focusing on baseball. When his baseball career takes a turn, he heads back to his hometown, back to his family, and the love he left behind - Riley.

This second-chance romance tugs at the heartstrings, for sure. While Riley and Cooper's story was sweet, it was also emotional - the characters going through some truly heartwrenching moments together. Grab tissues! I had tears running down my face.

This was the first book I'd read from this author and I'll definitely be going back to read more. I really liked the writing style, and I'm a sucker for stories that make you feel.

I love a good back-t0-hometown romance. I love Cooper and his story.

It's so easy to relate to this story and these characters, as they are dealing with issues that are common, and we all struggle with at some point-grief, guilt, fear & learning how to forgive. It's nice to see the characters transform throughout the story.

Quick, easy read with fun, relatable characters.
Now I need a book for Ace & Sutton, and maybe even Beau & Maddie :)

“Don’t ever compare yourself to them. When I was with them girls? All I could think about was you. They paled in comparison to what I have with you. You’re worried about measuring up to them? They never measured up to you. I couldn’t even look at them or kiss them when we fucked. The only way I could get off was by closing my eyes and picturing you.”

The quote above is why this book is only getting 2 stars. This paragraph pretty much ruined the story for me because the MFC of course was with no one else for the six year separation except for a drunken kiss. The MMC was living it up with other women fucking but hey it’s ok because he had to close his eyes and picture her and he could not look at them or kiss them while they fucked.

So not only was he a coward that went six years without trying to reach out to her she was home pining with no good sex with others. He used god knows how many other women to numb himself. Very tired of this double standard.

The writing was good but the above really pissed me off swing as they were this couple joined at the hip. I did not like that they did not talk more about him fucking god knows how many women or talk about him having been tested for STI’s. They ditch the condoms and he thinks he always wore one only been tempted not to with the MFC when they were together which again was like how much did he sleep around? Also condoms are not full proof. They had one scene where she tossed gossip rags at him of his exploits and still they never really talked about it.

After a six year separation where he made no attempt to reach out, he is only back in town because of a busted career and him fucking around being photographed with others during that separation I was not convinced of his love or his worth in terms of the MFC. He was a selfish shit. She tried to spin it from a guilt angle as he was driving the vehicle and why wasn’t it me? I just felt like it fell short. Maybe if the separation had been shorter and he tried to reach out. If she had a boyfriend some good sex and he had not fucked a bunch of other women.

Please note: This book contains subjects that may be triggering for some readers. Please be kind to yourself and read the TW before embarking on Cooper and Riley's journey.

Stefanie Jenkins never fails to hit me with all the feels.
Her writing is emotional terrorism at its finest.

Once again, I find myself sitting at my computer, eyes blurry, heart hurting—yet, overflowing with happiness—due to the emotional maelstrom I have just endured.

Riley and Cooper had a LOT of trauma to deal with.
Not only as individuals but also between them.
Understandably, there was A LOT of hurt and damage that needed to be addressed before they can co-exist in their small town.

After the emotionally charged beginning of the book, the steps that Cooper took to make progress in his recovery, and the discoveries he made regarding Riley, I thought we had turned a corner. We were granted heartwarming memories, sweet words, and moments of levity and laughter.

Boy, was I lulled into a false sense of security.

Because, just as the tension and drama exploded between two individuals, Mrs Jenkins pulled the proverbial rug out from underneath me—again.

Honestly, I'm still reeling from this beautifully tragic story.

Loss, love, hope, forgiveness and second chances collided in a hauntingly beautiful glimpse of how grief and guilt can flip your world upside down.

But that final chapter? Pure magic.

I received a copy of this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Standing ovation for this book! I don’t even really know where to begin or the words to give this the justice it deserves . This is a book I was absolutely NOT ready for, but have needed in my hands for quite some time. This book navigates 2 teenagers in love, Cooper and Riley. They both suffer a major traumatic loss, and it tears them apart. Cooper leaves his girlfriend Riley, his family and his hometown after this and doesn’t return until years later. This is where he is finally forced to face his grief head on. Him refusing for years to face his grief negatively impacted everyone, especially those who love him the most. This teaches a lesson that I think we all know and many struggle with. You can’t ignore grief. You have to go through it. Face it. Accept it. This book tells a story of how there is life and love beyond loss.
This book contains triggers stated by the author in the front of the book, I highly recommend checking prior to jumping In.
This book was captivating and beautifully written. It will grab ahold of you from page one and forge a spot in your heart that you won’t be soon forgetting.
I loved the side characters and am hoping for more of them In the future!

This was such an emotional story about forgiveness and second chances that will shattered your heart and put it back together at the end.

I think by now I know I need to have a box of Kleenex next to me before I start reading one of Stefanie's books. The emotions she pours into her characters are incredibly beautiful and like in her other books once you start reading you never want to stop.

This book tell us the story of high school sweethearts Cooper and Riley and the great lost and separation they suffered by loosing their best friend Tanner in a terrible accident.

Years later Cooper is back in his hometown of Meadows Ridge after his baseball career takes a turn for the worst. The years apart from his home hasn't lessened the burden, regret and guilt he had when he left but also hasn't lessened the love he has for Riley, his one and only love. But that girl he left behind is not the same as him she carries scars and most of all hate towards the one boy who broke her heart.

Copper and Riley's journey its emotional but beautiful, they get to know each other again and they are what each other need in order to move forward and really enjoy life.

“We all have scars, Coop. Some are physically etched in our skin”

The fact that this book is not all over Bookstagram is beyond me! It is amazing! 10/10. 5⭐️’s. ALL the big numbers and sparkly things for this one. The emotions you will feel while reading this book are unreal and raw, you will literally feel what they feel. The journey Cooper and Riley and pretty much the whole small town of Meadows Ridge takes to get through their grief, is portrayed in this heart wrenching and breathtaking novel hitting me directly in the feels.

You will find yourself crying, laughing, gasping, maybe even throwing the book down for a minute, but let me tell you, SO freaking worth it.

The second chance love story between Cooper and Riley filled my heart, while Austin and Riley’s BFF status made me smile so much.

“What? Don’t you think you can spin circles around me anymore, Riles?”

Before you read, make sure to read the trigger warnings. But trust me when i say, YOU MUST READ SCARS. ASAP.

I read SCARS on KU along with some bookstagram friends in a Buddy chat. I did just receive this absolutely beautiful signed paperback in the mail that I won in the best giveaway I’ve ever won! Thank you so much Stefanie!

Cooper and his best friend, Tanner. Just won the state Baseball championships. When Riley, Coopers girlfriend, get in a car accident. This one second ruins their lives. Cooper was driving so he believes everything that happened is his fault. Instead of facing everything Cooper runs away. 6 years later when he comes back. He is forced to face everything he ran away from. Including Riley.
This is an emotional second chance story. There is a lot of self-blame, grief and heartache in it. When Riley needed Cooper, he just left her. Will she give him another chance? Can she forgive him for leaving?
For her a stronger friendship emerges between her an Austin, Tanner’s brother. They both have leaned on each other during their grief. The other supporting characters are very realistic. From Tanner’s mom to their coach. It is plump full of Angst. You will definitely need Kleenex! This was one of the best second chance stories I have ever read.

Review: Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an ARC copy of this book. This story was both heartbreaking and heartwarming! This story revolves around friendship, forgiveness, and grief and the journey each character takes to navigate these issues after a tragedy. There were a decent amount of hard, emotional scenes. I would suggest paying attention to the trigger warnings. I also found it difficult to be on Cooper's side at times based on his decisions and attitude about everything, but he won me over eventually. I especially loved reading about the relationship between Riley and Austin. I love the support and care they have for each other. I also really enjoyed Ace and what that character brought to the table. There are some spicy bits, but not over the top and it doesn't overpower the plot. Overall, this was a solid read that was sad and challenging at times, but won a place in my heart!

Grab your tissues because you are going to need it. In most SJ books, she loves to completely obliterate your heart and piece by piece put it back together. Cooper and Riley, high school sweethearts getting ready to be done with high school and moving on to their colleges. Tragedy strikes and it all goes downhill from there. Let me tell you, I was just a mess.

He's back in town and things are not easy. Riley has not seen Cooper in a long time and while he wanted back in her life she definitely is not making anything easy for him at all. These two have soooo much to tackle. So much hurt, so much unfinished feelings, they need to figure that out before moving on from each other. There is so much love between these two. So much. I could not put this down, I loved reading these two and I can't wait for the next one.

Oh. MY. God. Emotion overload ( in a good way) You’re going to feel it ALL!

I went in blind with this book, ironically starting it while sitting at the field during baseball practice. I was not prepared to become so deeply engrossed in the lives of Cooper and Riley. I also wasn’t prepared to be wrecked by my emotions that surfaced. I felt grief, joy, humor, and hope, I had both sad and happy tears running down my cheeks. I’m not sure if I’ve ever been so happy for two people to kiss and make up, especially after all they went through! Best second chance romance I’ve read in awhile. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down! This one will definitely tug at your heart strings, especially if you’ve ever lost someone you love. Grab the tissues, and a snack, and be prepared to sit for a bit.

First time reading a story by Stefanie Jenkins and I am hooked! It has every emotion you could think of. I had tears rolling down my face! Needless to say I adored it! Cooper and Riley. A horrific and tragic event caused so much damage to a small town and especially to two people. And because of that, Cooper left town. Now quite a few years later he is back. He has so much regret and guilt but he needs to make amends. Oh, if it were only that simple. There is a special person who is number one on his list and that is Riley. But if he thinks this is going to be simple, well, guess again. If he thought the past years were hell, he should get ready for even more. Let’s hope there is a lot of forgiving going around. Good luck!!!
