At the Doors of Holy Lent

Οἱ ἅγιοι Πατέρες μας μὲ ἐνθουσιασμὸ ἀνέμεναν τὴ Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή, λέγοντας ὅτι ἂν διέλθουμε αὐτὴν τὴν περίοδο μὲ νηστεία καὶ μετάνοια εἶναι σὰν νὰ ἀποδεκατίζουμε τὴ ζωή μας. Οἱ παλαιοὶ Ἰσραηλίτες ἀφιέρωναν ἕνα δέκατο τῶν γεννημάτων τους στὸν Θεό. Οἱ Χριστιανοὶ ἀφιερώνουν ἕνα δέκατο τῆς πρόσκαιρης ζωῆς τους σὲ ἐντονότερο ἀγώνα προσεγγίσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ καί, ὅταν ἡ προσφορὰ γίνει μὲ ταπείνωση, ὁ Κύριος τὴ δέχεται ὡς θυσία εὐάρεστη καὶ εὐλογεῖ ὄχι μόνο τὸ ὑπόλοιπο τῆς ἐπίγειας ζωῆς, ἀλλὰ πολὺ περισσότερο, ἀποθησαυρίζει αὐτὲς τὶς ἡμέρες στὴν αἰωνιότητα.

Father Zacharias is a disciple of Saint Sophrony the Athonite - the Father founder of the Community of Saint John the Baptist, Essex, UK. He studied theology at the Orthodox Theological Institute of Saint Sergius in Paris and at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has lived all his monastic life in the monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex where he serves as a spiritual Father and minister of the word of God to his brethren and the people that come to him.
