Detective Dave Burrows returns in another breathtaking tale of rural suspense from the bestselling Voice of the Outback.

Dave Burrows is fighting to see his children and suffering from the guilt and trauma of his mother-in-law being shot by his nemesis, Bulldust. He's being told by Mel's lawyer that his job puts his children at risk and therefore he shouldn't see them.

After a phone call suggesting to his partner, Bob Holden, there could have been some sheep stolen north of Carnarvon, they head north and Dave tries to put his children out of his mind. Especially when Shannon, a forensic pathologist, turns up to investigate the first body on the beach. Shannon and Dave have always had a close friendship and, on the beautiful beaches of the north, that friendship grows into something more.

A ferocious storm comes, uncovering another body, buried deep in the sand, and a truckload of drugs is discovered nearby as they recover the second body. It's then that the sheep investigation takes a back seat.

Detective Dave Burrows and his partner, Detective Bob Holden headed to the north of the state, above Carnarvon in Western Australia as they chased reports of stolen sheep from properties spread far and wide. Checking with one station and discovering their thoughts – wild dogs – Dave and Bob headed to the next one, which was also a farm stay. Settling into a couple of the rustic cabins on site, the men prepared to do some investigating. But the screams from two of the backpackers the following day, led to the discovery of the first body on the nearby beach.

With a forensic pathologist on the way by air, closing the beach wasn’t popular with the campers. But when the work had been done and the plane was preparing to fly out with the body on board, a violent storm hit, and the pilot and pathologist were stuck at the camp site with the creeks and rivers nearby flowing quickly and dangerously. The discovery of a second body, uncovered by the storm, and then a cache of heroin, had Dave and Bob feeling they were in well over their heads. The drug squad – or anyone else – couldn’t get out until the weather allowed. It was obvious they were in danger – but could they hold on until the other police had arrived? And would they get back to the original reason they’d arrived on Corbett Station Stay?

Rising Dust is another spectacular rural suspense novel by Aussie author Fleur McDonald – and it’s another Dave Burrows episode (the early days in his career) which I devoured! Such a great series, with a wonderful, down to earth main character. I’ve met Bob Holden before too, when he’s been working with Dave in the stock squad, and he’s a dry, crusty old bloke, another mentor for Dave. I’m already looking forward to the author’s next episode and highly recommend this one.

With thanks to Allen & Unwin for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

How I enjoyed Rising Dust by Fleur McDonald!
This book had it all - suspense, crime, action, tropical storms and an atmospheric setting on a sheep station north of Carnarvon near the coast!

Rising Dust features the popular and much loved Detective Dave Burrows character who is sent out to investigate sheep stealing with his partner Bob but they certainly get caught up in more than sheep!

We also delve into Dave’s troubled past and his broken marriage. Dave’s missing his children terribly and he’s having flashbacks to the day he lost his family and the memories that plague him.

This story takes quite the unexpected twist which makes for a thrilling read! The author has spent much of her life living and working on farms and drawing from that experience shows in her knowledgeable and authentic writing.

I giggled at some of the caravan related quirks Fleur picked up on her research for the book travelling in her camper van and staying at Station Stays and talking to other campers…I could relate, so true!

Sit back enjoy the mystery, suspense and the beautiful rural surroundings and read it for yourself, I loved it and found it to be quite the page turner!

I love Detective Dave Burrows he is such a fabulous character and this is another awesome story, Dave is still struggling with what has happened with his wife Mel and now the lawyers have told him he is still not allowed to see his daughters for fear of the danger he will put them in, he sets his mind to work and when he is called to investigate missing sheep with partner Bob Holden a trip to the bush is just what he needs, only they uncover more than they were looking for.

Bob and Dave arrive in the far north near Carnavon and start their investigation, first stop Double M station were the report of missing sheep has come from, they also say that wild dogs have been seen, from here they travel to Corbett Station Stay, this place has a tourist stop where caravans can stay and they also have cabins for hire, Dave and Bob settle themselves into the cabins and plan their investigation.

The missing sheep are put on hold when a body is discovered on the beach by a couple of backpackers who work at the stay station, they are able to get forensic pathologist Shannon with a pilot to arrive and help with the body, which brings Dave some happiness they have always had a close friendship and this may go further, except there is a terrible storm and another body and drugs turn up. The storm has cut them off and with no help arriving soon Dave and Bob have a lot to do.

This is a book that I could barely put down, Dave is in his early days and getting to know him better is so good and Bob as well he is a fabulous mentor for Dave and together they make a formidable team when they investigate the mystery of the bodies and the drugs in this beautiful part of Western Australia. I loved seeing Dave find some happiness after what he has been through and all I can stay is that this is a must read story one that I would highly recommend, Fleur McDonald brings out the best in her characters and always with a great mystery to uncover, I look forward to her next book.

My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my coy to read and review

Thank you to @allenandunwin for sending me a copy of this book for review.

This book moves at a meduim pace until about 3/4 of the way through where the pace intensifies and moves swiftly.

This book is predominately told by Detective Dave Burrows and his boss Bob Holden. I loved the banter between these two. There are so many other characters involved in this story as well.

The plot in this book is Detective Dave Burrows and his boss Bob Holden are called to investigate theft of sheep from a station. They soon find out its not what they are expecting. Throw in a romance , murder and drugs and this book explodes into something you cant put down.

I read this as a standalone. Detective Dave Burrows features in many of Fleurs books .

This book ticks all the boxes for me:

1/ Rural setting in Australia
2/ Romance
3/ Suspense
4/ Crime

I really enjoyed Fleurs writing style and she had me captivated from the first page.

This book was unpredictable and thats just how I like it.

The ending was exceptional. Never would have I predicted what happened !

The book is set on a farm in Carnarvon which is situated in Western Australia.

Definitely going to check out the backlist and read more of Detective Dave Burrows journey in her other books.

I simply devour Fleur McDonald's Dave Burrows books and eagerly await each new novel.

Following on from Something to Hide, Dave's marriage to Mel is in tatters and he is battling lawyers to see his two daughters.

Dave is sent with, partner and mentor, Detective Bob Holden to investigate a possible case of stolen sheep north of Carnarvon. However when a body is uncovered on the beach, then a large drug haul is found buried nearby, the sheep investigation is temporarily on hold.

Rising Dust is another suspense filled story where the action never lets up. McDonald highlights the unpredictability of the weather and how the outback can quickly change from peaceful, restful and healing to wild and dangerous as a flash storm rips through the area causing flooding.
I loved the vivid descriptions of the landscape and how McDonald captures the flora and fauna of the area with discerning accuracy showcasing her knowledge of the outback.

I really enjoy the partnership of Bob and Dave. Bob uses his age and experience to mentor Dave and dampens down some of Dave's impulsiveness, showing Dave to use a steady head and calm his quick temper.

Rising Dust is a wonderful blend of police procedural, crime, suspense and character development.

Fleur McDonald delivers Australian outback crime at it's breath-holding best.

Rising Dust is a rural suspense in the Detective Dave Burrows series, by Australian author Fleur McDonald dubbed the “Voice of the Outback.” Partners Bob Holden and Dave Burrows are sent to a sheep station north of Carnarvon to investigate possible stock theft. Everything changes when a dead body, then a second body and a stash of drugs are found washed up on the beach at Corbett Station Stay where they are based.

Dave is recovering from the trauma of his broken family and the disintegration of his marriage after his mother-in-law was shot by a criminal he was chasing. He is currently facing the stress of a legal custody battle to see his daughters. The arrival of smart and beautiful forensic pathologist Shannon is a pleasant distraction from these dark thoughts.

This was a pleasant enough read, somewhat slow and rambling, and I may have felt more connected to Dave as a character if I had read some of the earlier books.

Detective Dave Burrows is back! And as a big fan of both Fleur McDonald and Detective Dave Burrows, I was extremely excited for Rising Dust and was thrilled to receive a #gifted copy from the team at Allen and Unwin.

Of course, it did not disappoint! Fleur isn't dubbed as the "Voice of the Outback" for nothing! As always with her books, I flew through the pages engulfing myself in the thick of the suspense of what was going on and the beauty of the rural surroundings!

Oh and this one had some mighty twists! Those kinds of ones that blindside you out of nowhere! An absolute thrill to read! Who knew investigating stolen sheep could get so hairy! 😳

We get the lot with the Detective Dave Burrows series, the crime and suspense along with the detectives private life story that flows on through each book. A perfect blend of getting to know Dave's character like he is a real mate and then joining him on a thrill ride with his crime investigations!

In saying that, all the books in the series can be read standalone and in fact, I started somewhere in the middle if the series so still need to go back to where it all started for Detective Dave!

A fulfilling rural crime symposium from start to finish, Rising Dust is the latest chapter in the Detective Dave Burrows series. Tracing back to this enigmatic Detective’s early days, Rising Dust travels deep into the outback, exposing a crime that challenges this seasoned country crime specialist.

With his marriage on the rocks after a tragedy, Detective Dave Burrows has further pressing issues to deal with in his professional life when a new case arrives on his doorstep. As Dave struggles to connect with his wife Mel, his policing work sends him off to a remote sheep station in WA, where he delves into a case of sheep theft. However, once Dave gets the ball rolling, he discovers that this crime is not a simple case of theft. Then mother nature unleashes her fury in the form of tropical storm, which floods the region. Dave and his partner Bob are stuck at their investigation site, which brings about danger and intense suspicion. Dave is haunted by his past, which continues to play on his mind as he tries to find a way out of this tricky investigation.

Im always the first to put my hand up to review a new Fleur McDonald novel, she is a true symbol of the Australian outback crime and suspense genre. McDonald’s very popular and likeable rural Detective is back as we receive another great insight into Dave’s early years. Thrilling, gritty, enthralling and tense, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dave and his team in Rising Dust.

This time around we are taken to my home state of Western Australia, to investigate on first glance a pretty standard case of sheep theft at a remote station near Carnarvon. However, in true blue Fleur McDonald style, there is so much more to this crime than meets the eye. We are soon swept up into a dangerous, unyielding and completely troublesome investigation. Closely following charismatic lead Detective Dave Burrows and his partner Bob, Rising Dust successfully moves between Dave’s investigative efforts and his personal life issues. A compelling link to the past ties all the respective threads of this arc together, creating one magnetising read from the beginning right until the very end of this story. Although I am a seasoned Fleur McDonald and Detection Dave fan, Rising Dust could easily be read as a standalone novel.

Rising Dust is another winning rural Aussie crime suspense tale and I’m looking forward to my next thrilling visit to Detective Dave’s rural patch soon!

Rising Dust is part of Fleur McDonald's Young Detective Dave Burrows series. Detective Dave Burrows is still reeling from his ex-wife's blocking him from seeing his children when his partner, Detective Bob Holden, calls him about stolen sheep near Carnarvon. Detective Dave Burrows needs to forget about his guilt and focus on the case, especially when the case gets more complicated with the discovery of two bodies and the isolation due to flooding. The readers of Rising Dust will continue to follow Detective Bob Holden and Detective Dave Burrows to discover what happens.

Rising Dust is a fantastic Australian rural suspense story by Fleur McDonald, ensuring I continue engaging with her books. I am pleased that Fleur McDonald decided to write a series about Detective Dave Burrows, one of my favourite characters. I love Fleur's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. Rising Dust is well-written and researched. I like Fleur McDonald's description of the settings of Rising Dust, which allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Rising Dust will learn about the isolation of Australian rural areas. Also, the readers of Rising Dust will understand the problems that law enforcement officers have when their marriage breaks down.

I recommend this book.

Thank you Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review.
When there’s a suspected sheep stealing racket going on, Detective Dave Burrows is there in a flash to unravel the latest mystery in Fleur McDonald’s new rural suspense.
Rising Dust is filled with intrigue, suspense, tension, loyalty, survival, danger and adventure.
Dave and his partner, fellow detective Bob Holden are sent to investigate an alleged incident.
They soon realise that there’s more to this than just theft.
When a raging storm leaves them stranded and reveals more felony they are left remote and amongst the menace and chaos.
Can they solve the mystery and save the day?
The ‘Voice of the Outback’ returns with her latest bestseller, packed with action in another country tale.
A compelling read with an engaging storyline in a bush setting where law enforcement Dave solves his current assignment.
When Dave’s on the job you know everything will be wrapped up and uncovered quickly.
Readers receive a great police crime procedural drama mixed with a solid countrified narrative.
Amongst all the enthralling melodrama we get a mix of many characters to pluck up the drama and mess with the storyline.
An experienced author who expresses issues in the heart of the community.

𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝘂𝘀𝘁 was totally worth the wait for this Detective Dave Burrows fan! The only trouble is, it's now over, and I have to wait for another book to be released!

I really do enjoy the early Dave years, where he's working in the stock squads. This time, Dave and his partner Bob Holden are sent out north to investigate a simple case of sheep stealing. But of course, nothing is simple when they get cracking!

Corbett Station Stay is where all the action takes place. The two detectives have only been on site for less than a day when a body is discovered on a nearby beach. Soon after, another body is discovered in a man made grave- along with a multitude of drugs. As it becomes apparent that the cases are connected, Dave and Bob find themselves in immediate danger.

If you've read my reviews on the previous Early Dave books, it won't come to any surprise that I detest Mel, Dave's first wife. Her true colours show once again in this installment. Poor Dave is heartbroken because he can't see his two little girls and it's just not fair. For comfort, he turns to Shannon, their forensic pathologist. It's not the first time they've crossed paths- in fact they've been attracted to each other for awhile. (Not) a spolier- I'm so glad that they don't get together in the long run, because we won't have Kim, Dave's superstar of a second wife!

Another cracker from the 'Voice of the Outback'!

I loved the suspense in this book. I don't want to give away too many spoilers, but the opening chapter was harrowing, with the Indonesian girl being kidnapped and trafficked, and then the discovery of her body later. The whole description reminded me of a time when my dad and I went to gather firewood and a decomposing bull lay nearby (the very reason there was plenty of firewood available in the area, I presume). It didn't bother us too much until the wind changed direction and the smell nearly made us sick! I wanted to stick my nose in my dad's chainsaw petrol container at that.
I also loved the romantic tension between Dave Burrows and his colleague Shannon, but I hated his ex-wife, Mel. She came across toxic and cruel, and from what I've read about other books in this series, she wanted him to quit his job or she'd leave him. OK, I know everyone in his family's been traumatised, but a loving wife would have supported her husband if he was going through PTSD. A loving husband would do the same for his wife. And the way she barred him from talking to his kids, all because of his job! She sounds so possessive.
OK, enough ranting. A good book overall.

Following family drama and tragedy it looks like Dave's marriage to Mel is now at an end.
Dave and his partner Bob Holden are sent to investigate suspected sheep stealing at a station north of Carnarvon. When a tropical storm floods the area, Dave and Bob find themselves isolated at a farm stay. It soon becomes apparent to both of them that there is more to this than sheep stealing and the isolation leaves them vulnerable and in great danger.
This is book #4 in my catch up with the books of Fleur McDonald and the books just get better and better, which is one reason I can't stop reading them! I am reading the books in order of publication and I have a couple more to go so on with the next story Into The Night.
If you haven't yet caught up with Fleur's books, there are 24 of them out there ( #25 due later this year) and I would recommend any of them. Though they are a series in a way (the continuing characters of Dave Burrows) the books are basically stand alones. I just love to read books in order.

Rising Dust by Fleur McDonald is another installment in the Detective Dave Burrows series. McDonald skillfully weaves a tale of suspense set against the striking backdrop of the Australian outback. The plot, initially focussed on a seemingly simple livestock theft, quickly spirals into a complex web of murder and drug trafficking. The remote location and harsh weather conditions heighten the tension as Burrows and his partner find themselves isolated and outnumbered. McDonald's intimate knowledge of rural life shines through, creating authentic and compelling characters. The story delves into the personal struggles of Burrows, adding depth to the narrative. While the plot is predictable at times, the pace and the author's vivid descriptions kept me engaged until the final, satisfying conclusion.

The events of the previous book in this series, Something to Hide, were fairly catastrophic and something from which there's no going back. McDonald's latest, features Dave in the aftermath of that, grappling with his future and potentially the loss of his family. Amidst some good old outback crime of course.

This is another great read with several satisfying conclusions by McDonald. And I continue to appreciate that I always come away with some newfound knowledge. Her effortless references to details about stock numbers or sheep shearing practices aside, it feels as if I (myself) have ventured a little into rural Australia. (But lived to tell the tale.)

Fleur McDonald has been one of my favourite rural romance authors for many years, with her stories showcasing a distinct outback flare and love of all things country.

In Rising Dust, Fleur winds the clock back to reveal a fresh side of Detective Dave Burrows. Detective Burrows features in many of McDonald's stories - like an Aussie version of Jack Reacher only better - and has become a much-loved character among her loyal followers.

Readers will relish the carefully-crafted and isolated Western Australian setting and find the pages turning quickly as the policemen are stuck in a camp with suspected criminals. Another winner with a nail-biting conclusion!

Fleur McDonald has written another fabulous book in Detective Dave Burrows series.

I really enjoyed the twists and turns this story took. Never underestimate people! There were moments in this book where I was holding my breath as I read, hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.

I always like the locations Fleur writes about, the wide open spaces, small towns, coastal farming land, I always feel like I am transported there as I read.

Being the wife of a city detective turned country policeman I can really relate to these stories on so many levels and hope that my husbands call outs don’t ever turn out like they do for Dave and his colleagues 😆

Another book in the Detective Dave Burrows series. I have previously read one other and love the feel of these books.
Dave and his partner, Bob Holden, are sent to investigate the disappearance of sheep from a station, possibly stolen. They stay on a station nearby and while there uncover crimes on the beach.
They are isolated due to recent rains and find themselves in a bit of danger.
The story flows nicely and keeps you interested throughout with intriguing characters. I really enjoy Fleur McDonald’s books and hope to read many more.

Dave and Bob are part of the stock squad. There has been some talk of sheep stealing north of Carnarvon. They head north to look into it. While out on a station there is a tremendous storm and roads, creeks etc are flooded. The airstrips can’t be used either as they are not all weather. They come across a body on the beach, then another buried near a large stash of drugs. They have a satellite phone so can call the city, but they can’t get any help because of the flooded conditions. There are a few surprises as you read this entertaining book.

Endure the first 100 pages of this book and it will be worth your while. It's a slow start but good to establish main characters and what they're all about. And then the pace takes a significant boost and reader interest is piqued. There's a problem to be solved which is compounded by other problems to be solved, then some romance complicated by dealing with a tricky family/marital situation, and then some danger and tense moments which build up to the resolution of all the problems which transitioned after the first 100 pages. An enjoyable read no less.

Another great rural read by Fleur McDonald.

Detective Dave Burrows returns with his partner Bob Holden to investigate missing sheep at a station north of Carnarvon when they discover more than they bargained for. Another crime, more dangerous, falls into their hands and has to be dealt with before they start looking for the sheep.

As always the person they need to apprehend for the crime is not who you think it may be.

Very interesting and always worth a read.

Cyclone Ilsa is happening in the real world and I'm reading a Gascoyne region story by Fleur that has the characters Dave and Bob Stock Squad Detectives.
Missing stock read on to see what happened to them. (all natural)
Wrong place wrong time or right place right time for the detectives.
Emotional business of divorce is hard on all and taking small steps to move forward can slide from under you. Dave's situation but sounds like Bob's also.
Another story is coming....

Another Dave Burrows book with all the action of solving a rural stock crime out from Carnarvon, WA. There with his partner Detective Bob Holden, they find there is much more happening. They find dead bodies & a drug cache. A tropical storm makes everything more difficult to solve. This is all happening after the unpleasant breakdown of Dave’s first marriage & all the dramas of same.

I score this 4.5 stars 🌟

Awesome! I loved this Dave Burrows story. It had all of the adventure, intrigue and a touch of romance that I craved - and set in the outback with all of the complexities of surviving no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. I’m looking forward to Fleur’s next road trip to bring on another thrilling novel like this one that I have scarcely put down all day until I had read it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Maybe 3.5/5. This was the first Dave Burrows novel I have read (the 5th in the series), but it is a standalone (basically). I found the first half quite slow and not going anywhere. Then things started to heat up and it ended with a rush. You had to suspend your disbelief in places, but it was worthwhile, especially in the description of farm practices, which the author excels in.

Was just okay. Focused more on the landscape and rural things such as mustering, troopy ability, etc. Felt like the book didn’t flow, dragged with unimportant things to the storyline. An expected love scene that was cut dead by the end of it. Story got interesting half way through but could guess how it was going to end too soon.

Some inconsistencies with this one (including errors in the 2002 setting). Whoever had the library book before me actually put pen to paper to point them out! In my own defence, I picked up a few that they didn't lol. Still, it's the typical Dave Burrows book and at least Mel isn't present in its pages this time.
