Jared Sullivan quit the CIA for reasons, and has been languishing on the ranch he inherited from his much hated grandfather. Sam Hatch shows up and practically begs him to take the mission to go to Rebelia, rescue Dr. Alex Morrow and figure out what the evil dictator is trying to accomplish by stealing all those gems. Jared very reluctantly agrees. The rescue itself goes off without a hitch, except that Jared soon discovers that Dr. Morrow is not what he seems...he is in fact a she in disguise. She is also keeping multiple other secrets with affects Jared's ability to trust her, even though he is crazy attracted to her and even likes and respects her quite a bit. Neither is Jared very forthcoming about his past and his issues, but the two become closer and some of these secrets start coming to light. But Jared's big secret is one which will keep them apart if he has his way.

Lot of secrets happening here. Jared is an interesting character who feels borderline paranormal with his photographic memory ability. He also unfortunately received genetic testing which indicated that, like his mother, he has the marker for . So he's isolated himself and quit his job in anticipation of this happening. And I admit, I was intrigued because it seemed this story would be one of the very few in which the HEA was going to be a Happy-for-however-long-they've-got. Of course, then the deus-ex-machina comes along and reveals that the test results were faked, so he has no worries at all and can have his HEA. In retrospect, I'm not sure which ending I would have preferred. The first would have been less happy, but more realistic - but the second one felt more contrived.

Alex is something of a genius and also remiscent of a paranormal or something. She is the one that really pushes for more with Jared and resents his keeping secrets, which is ironic considering the secret that she keeps from him. And this secret is one that prevents Jared from trusting her. And yeah, she has a bad experience of revealing this issue and that person having broken her heart as a result, but her obsession with keeping this absolutely, completely and totally secret from Jared seemed ridiculous. I couldn't understand why she wouldn't have revealed it immediately...it's not like she was trying to attract him at the time or anything...I mean, she'd originally been dressed as a man. It seemed a bit of an overreaction.

The strength in this story is the relationship between the characters...they have some sexual chemistry, but it's their platonic chemistry that really works well for them. They just work well together and they were pretty enjoyable to read about.

Too many plot holes in this one to like it much. I still don't see how they weren't exposed as agents sooner.
