When the Sa'Nerra wielded a neural weapon that turned Fleet crew against their own, humanity's fate seemed sealed. But Lucas Sterling, a black-ops Omega Captain selected for his cold-hearted ability to do whatever it takes to win, knows that in the fight against the brutal alien warriors, there is only victory or death.
As captain of the warship Invictus, Sterling and the Omega Taskforce must fight without emotion, without boundaries, and without mercy, unburdened by the rules of war. But when anyone could be the enemy, who can Sterling really trust to help save humanity?

This was an amazing ride into a world of sci-fi, alien aggressors and a dystopian world with a dark ending. Loved this series and just purchased the follow up descendants of war.
The story-line and plot are well worked out. However, I have some problems with the book that bothered me throughout the series. Why Lucus Sterling had to stand at the command module and get knocked on his ass, rammed into the counsel knocking teeth out, I don't understand? This action took place several times in each book. In some of the shuttles they had seats and straps to keep them from getting injured, but never on the main ship. Everyone was to stupid to ever fix the problem too. The next problem, again coming up a number of times is when the power had to be transferred to the engines and weapons, leaving some of the crew decks with out support, killing the crew members. They were also killed when the craft was damaged, landed hard, hit with torpedoes, and a dozen other impact problems. Why didn't they have a capsule with air, support straps, and other protections? Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. It bothered me so much I don't know if I want to read another book by this author or not.
An amazing series that was just a blast to read. Below is my review on each book in this series set. I enjoyed them all.
Book 1: The Emissary - Meet Captain Lucas Sterling, a Captain who will do what he must to win a war against the alien race bent on the destruction of all humans. The aliens have a horrible weapon that turns the fleet personal against each other but Captain Lucas Sterling ends up being the hope of the humans to win the war. It was fast paced, deadly, and had lots of action and danger. It made for a wild read but it both entertained me and kept me guessing as to what Sterling and his crew would face next and what hard decisions they would have to make next. Just a good read and start of a series that I have high hopes for.
Book 2: Void Recon - The story starts with a bang and just gets better as it goes as Sterling and his crew are hunting the void. It was fast paced, lots of action, danger and secrets to hopefully uncover. The characters and the story were good and just sucked me in just to see what was going to happen and what twists and surprises were to be had. Really enjoyed it.
Book 3: The Exile - Sterling and his crew are back for another adventure into the void and hope to save humanity. It was fun to read and entertaining as action, fighting, danger and sneaking around occurred. Glued to the end just to see what would happen to the plucky crew this time and would they be successful on their hunt this time around. Well written and sucked me into the story easily.
Book 4: Obsidian Fleet - Things are just heating up even more as Fleet and the United Governments fight, Fleet does its usual thing and screws up everything and our Captain Lucas Sterling must survive it all and figure out how to win yet again and fight for humans against the enemy and itself again. Lots of fighting, twists, turns, surprises and Sterling being his awesome self. Just another great story in the series that kept me on my toes and wildly entertained throughout it all.
Book 5: Dreadnaught - Captain Lucas Sterling and the rest of his crew are back for more action, adventure, and battles galore as they race to try to find a lost ship and hopefully win the war. At least that is their plan at the beginning. Of course things do not go as planned and thus I got an entertaining fast paced story that kept me reading to the end to see what the crew would face and what decisions they must make this time. A few surprises also pop up to add to the fun. Just a great story in the series that I loved.
Book 6: The Vanguard - Captain Lucas Sterling and the rest of his surviving crew are making a last stand of sorts to pay back the Sa’Nerran empire for what happened to Earth. Sterling must consolidate his allies and have a plan that will be glorious. I found this series to be a blast and this book delivers. Full of danger, action, more danger, friends and enemies and a final mission of revenge. Entertaining and full of great characters that I liked and enjoyed. loved it as expected. Had to read to the end just to see what Sterling had up his sleeve, what trouble he would get into and how he would get out of it.
Humanity expanded into the universe and bumped into a hive species that has no concept of surrender or negotiation - and to make matters worse, they are smart. These aren't mindless completely alien bugs looking for protein like in Weber & White's The Shiva Option. These aliens are a manipulative, conniving enemy turning some of humanity's greatest strengths into liabilities. The team fighting them? A ship full of the coldest, most ruthless, morally ambiguous soldiers a certain secret department could dredge up. They'll do what needs to be done, no matter the cost, but is it enough? and is it worth it?
Explosive, action-filled, military sci-fi space opera. Everything from space battles to hand-to-hand combat. This ship is crewed with mostly the kind of people Frank Castle would fit in well with. They seem like good people, but kinda scary and you don't want to be on their bad side - especially since some of them are unnerved by their companions. Humor was well used in this book too - kept things moving and from getting too dark. The political intrigue was wrapped into the story in an interesting way too - the repercussions of attacks on various human outposts play a roll in the conflict as well adding depth.
The character development in this series is top notch - as the series progresses cracks are showing, it seems the crew might be human after all. Well, maybe not the doctor - he's still creepy. Loved the addition of the latest 4 legged crew member, and the ongoing jokes about the meal packs. Hey, sometimes that is what matters. The complexity con the conflict at home, with the aliens, with outposts - this is a great, rich, fully nuanced read, not some singularly focused war.
Just when you think you have it figured out, the storyline takes another crazy twist, or throws in an unexpected crew member. The ending will not disappoint! Nothing less than the fate of two species is on the line. This is is a storyline that builds and I have to admit the second time through was even better than the first as I recognized just how much Ogden has put in play and set up from very early on in the series. This Omega Captain and his crew might be cold, but there is still a spark of humanity within them.
With regards to the audio version, Steve Barnes does an excellent job drawing you into the story. I wasn't sure about the voice he used for the narrator at first, but it grew on me. Character voices were spot on. This is a great one for listening to while doing other tasks as he has that kind of voice that keeps you interested but doesn't demand attention if you know what I mean. A nice calm voice despite all chaos and violence in the story. Which I suppose is fitting of an Omega narrator ;)
( Format : Audiobook ) "To the battles and the hard choices..." As the title suggests, this is an audio box set of complete six book series by G.J.Ogden, Omega Taskforce, narrated by Steve Barnes, with a run time of over forty three hours. And it is an immersive, sometimes harrowing, listen. The six books contained are - Omega Taskforce - Good Recons - The Exile - Obsidian Fleet - Dreadnaught - The Vanguard
Some time ago, I read (see separate review) book one, Omega Taskforce, and enjoyed it sufficiently to hold to continue. So, when I saw that a complete box set was available, I snapped it up. The books follow Captain Stirling as he and his officers says war against an alien force intent on enslaving human kind. With little, or no, help from each authorities, and facing an enemy with the ability to install an irreversible neural control over anyone captured, Stirling's crew work under a special Omega directive which directs that immediate death is meted on anyone or anywhere which is compromised, he that a person, even one previously loved it trusted, or a habitat, even if still teeming with people. It is the ultimate 'end justifies the means'.
Characterisation grows as the series develops, especially for Sterling himself and his first officer, Mercedes Banks, although several others also become interesting. Plenty of action, both close contact and on ship scale, but not so much that it swallows the book. Some repetition, but not overly much, although it does seem astonishing that, given how Stirling and his close officers are at the heart of every little incident, it never occurred to him to sometimes delegate occasionally.
I was initially disappointed with the voice of the narrator, whose delivery of the text seemed a little disjointed and spoken in a weird rather breathy whisper. But his voicing of the protagonists was excellent, each distinctively and appropriately individual, and, given that the conversations are a very large part of the writing, my discomfort with his general reading voice slowly dispersed until, by book two, it seemed perfectly natural. Overall, his was an excellent performance, greatly enhancing both character development and my personal enjoyment.
My thanks to the rights holder of Omega Taskforce, the Complete Series, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Free Audiobook Codes. Forty three hours is a long time to listen but the listing of chapters also informs of the start of each new book so it is possible to listen to each book individually if desired. Great value, a good read, and recommended to all S.F.fans who enjoy their military fiction to be just that little bit different.
I read the complete series in like 4 or 5 days staying up late some nights. I would have probably given a straight up 5 rating, ( the story actually was a five), if he had let me proof read and correct some things first. 😁 I found all through the books many missing and incorrectly spelled words. Not enough to ruin the ride but unfortunately I am one of those types that has to stop and highlight everything that looks wrong to me. Still, you can not deny the great value and enjoyment of this box set! Now if you will excuse me I already have the next box set and I'm in the mood for some more adventure. BUY IT, you won't regret it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this omnibus, enough so that I read it straight through to the final conclusion. A different kind of science for getting around the universe, though no less (or more) believable than any other. Heroes and heroines were somewhat one-dimensional and often brought back from the brink of death just to enable a particular storyline to be completed but, overall, it was great read which I certainly would recommend to anyone.
Captain Lucas Sterling of the Omega Task Force fights to make a difference in a war that has been going on for 5 decades. With his exceptional crew he goes where Fleet can't, doing what is needed to keep the human race from extinction. This is a series that will keep you on your toes. The cast is so developed they seem to speak to the reader. I highly recommend this military action packed series.
An absolutely riveting read, all books in the set are amazing, believable characters, awesome set pieces and gory descriptions of a war with an alien race. Real page turners all of them. So good I’ve just got the next instalment. Why nobody has picked this up for a tv series I’ll never know, it would be fantastic to watch. Many thanks Mr Ogden and keep them coming!
Alien invasion, stalwart starship crews in tough ships, mental devices that turn friendlies to enemies, an implacable alien foe, lots of starship combat, what's not to like? Although I listened to the audiobook version which was ok, but the book would have benefitted from a different reader. Otherwise, really enjoyed it.
I was looking for an action pack story to read and this certainly had lots of action. I enjoyed the battles even as they slowly killed all the characters I liked. The main character however was static throughout and after a while got tiresome. The verbiage got repetitive and the other characters were more interesting. Still it's a decent read.
Thoroughly enjoyed the saga that kept m entertained for days. How the author could come up with this long a story is beyond me. Maybe he had one of his advanced robots in the cupboard to help him out?? Anyway, well worth a read but I'm reading a single novel beforereturning to his long bargain buys.
Interesting ideas about the aliens as well as some good old fashioned space battles. As is often the case when reading books by authors not from the US there were some words that did not seem correct. Enjoy reading entire series one right after the other.
From the start I could not stop reading as it is full of action and unexpected turns of events and the last book was most interesting to me as I couldn’t stop reading as I wanted to find out what will happen at the end.
This book was well written. It was in a style I really enjoy. Serious situations to grab you with enough light-hearted humor to balance it. I've already purchased the next series, which continues in the same universe.
Absolutely amazing. A thrilling military sci-fi action adventure. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. I look forward to the next one.
Great! This series of books was one of the best I have ever read. The action, story line and characters were extremely well written. I hope there is a follow up in the near future.
It seemed to start slow but after a bit I couldn’t seem to put it down. The plot was good and the fight scenes were well done. It felt like I was watching a movie while I read it and I can’t wait to get the next part of the series.
The survival of humanity eventually depends on those who are willing to sacrifice everything. Eventually only a small portion of humanity actually survives.
I truly love this series!! Fantastic and unique characters and storylines, great battles and intrigue!! I recommend this series to all space opera lovers!! 💜
I have enjoyed many hours reading this series and recommend giving at least one volume a try Liked the storyline and characters There are elements of comedy too
Excellent book. Loved the characters especially Captain Lucas Sterling and first officer Mercedes Banks. Lots of action but also depth to the characters. Highly recommend.
