I was sooo torn on giving this a 5 star review, but Jack’s prolonged stubbornness towards the end made me pull back a bit. If only we could give 4.5 stars! Needless to say, I had a great time here. Jonathan Dunne is a tremendous talent and his unique imagination is on full display here. ‘A fairy tale in a fairy tale’ is the perfect way to sum all this up. You really felt for poor Jack, as he goes through so much loss. And things just keep getting stranger for him, with a huge twist at the end, which I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t see coming. It wasn’t even hidden and I missed it. Again, kudos to Dunne’s style of writing to pull me in a certain direction, as to keep it from being so obvious. But the emotions, journey, and magic of this adventure are done so well. And like I said earlier, I get why Dunne dragged the ending out like he did after some big revelations, but Jack was just being so difficult. It seemed a bit unbecoming of his character, but not totally far off base, especially after his reasoning for making this journey in the first place. So that just may be a personal preference. But I am now a huge fan of this author and cannot wait to read more of his works.

I have previously read some of Dunne's novels and in one way or another, he knew how to touch me in his own quirky way. I didn't think he could sweep me of my feet again like he did with Hide the Elephant, yet he did! Not only was I pleasantly surprised to meet certain characters again, merely did I know that - with Hearts Anonymous - he would rip my heart out, place it in front of me on the table and force me to face the battles I still seem to fight within myself.
Even though it seems I'm a air-hostess in this novel, I am actually Jack: When I lost my son, my whole world came crashing down. I doubted myself, wondered if I could or should have done things differently. How many times I wished I could turn back time!? Everybody had moved on, but I stayed behind and even though my daughter kept me going, time stood still. What if I had known about the clockmaker and his daughter? Would I've gone out there to track down the Count and his time machine?
Either way, just like in this beautiful story about loss, fate, destiny and love; where reality and a fairy-tale marvelously merge into one, there is no such thing as coincidence. Life can be a roller coaster, but everything happens for a reason. It is written in the stars; you just gotta read them.

A modern fairy tale. An ode to love. A metaphor on time. A philosophy lesson on life.
Our male hero suffers. Money, or rather its shortage, forces him to not share enough time with his girlfriend of many years. When a solution comes up, he suffers because he loses her. Literally. With her, he loses his heart as well (also literally). But said girlfriend was a generous donor. Now Jack suffers because he has to live with that for the rest of his life. A friend of the deceased, who happened to always be the third wheel, acts as a deus ex machina for our hero and helps him towards his catharsis.
Not one of Mr. Dunne’s books is just a book, just a story. No. They are eccentric, erratic adventures with a moral, but what’s so great about them is that they don’t end up being didactic. The process of writing this specific story must have been very interesting indeed. How does one deal with death and loss? Depression and suicidal tendencies? With organ donation? With the passing of time? With coincidences and fate? With life? Seems like a handful of themes, I know. It’s true that the central idea is quite macabre. But the dexterity in the writing and the black humour that is always present, make the process of “digesting” these themes so easy and pleasant that you find yourself craving for more.
I give this book the five stars it deserves and here’s something extra to sell it to you…it may be a modern fairy tale, but it is a fairy tale, with everything this admission entails. Prepare yourself for some very cool characters!

Even than I am not a big fan of fantasy, I liked the second part of the story, as well as the ending.
What is especially charming and appreciated in creative and easy-to-read writing of Jonathan Dunne is a great sense of humor of the author (and, of cause, the main character Jack). I enjoyed the multiplicity of funny dialogues on almost every page.
At the same time, the story is very philosophical (and sophisticated). And sometimes it's very sad.
Worth re-reading, I would say one of the best intellectual book, henceforth it's in my favorite shelf))).
Highly recommended to all book-lovers!

This book is unlike any other I have read. It takes you down a road that few people could imagine, and once you think you've figured it out, the rug is pulled out from under you. The characters are quirky and unique just like the storyline. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary then this book is for you!

In true Jonathan Dunne fashion, this novel takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. You will laugh. You will cry. You will be confused or frustrated at times. You will be amazed, and you will love this book! Yes, it does have his classic dark humor and you should expect the unexpected. You'll recognize some recurring themes - living/dead lovers, loss, and a quest to find answers. If you've read his other novels, you'll also notice that some characters and plot lines from other stories make appearances.
The story centers around Jack, who has lost the love of his life, Jeanie, in a tragic rollercoaster accident. Her death actually saves his life, however, because her heart now beats in the place where his no longer could. Anyone who has lost a loved one knows the agony of survivor's guilt, but Jack can't seem to run away from his emotions, even when he tries to commit suicide. Every beat of his/Jeanie's heart now pushes him to find answers. What is the meaning of life? What comes next? Was this fate or can Jack somehow turn back the hands of time and undo this tragedy?
Jeanie's best friend Ruthy tells Jack about a time machine she found in a fairy tale, and Jack laughs in her face. However, Jack himself unintentionally comes across the same story and has a change of heart. He decides he has nothing more to lose, so he and Ruthy plan a journey to find this time machine to bring Jeanie back. So, channeling fairy tales like Jack & the Beanstalk, they set off on an incredible adventure of a lifetime.
I especially enjoyed getting to know the characters in the book. It really drew me in and made me feel like my own heart was invested in the story. Putting together clues, like pieces of a puzzle, from earlier in the story or even from other novels by Dunne, was another bonus. The amazing twists & turns in the plot will leave you wanting more. Each time you read it you may discover something new!

That's the story of Jack, who could not let go of the past. He and Jeanie were very much in love, and about to build their future together, when a tragic accident took Jeanie's life and gave Jack a second chance. Because it was her heart that is beating in his chest now.
Ruthie, Jeanie's best friend, decides to tell Jack a fairy tale about a count that build the imposible (to fix his past mistakes), and so, without believe any of it, Jack plans the trip with Ruthie in the hopes that, while they're trying to discover the truth, they will also let go of the past and move on.
Another one of Jonathan Dunn's kind stories, with great characters, that will put a smile on your face while transporting you in the land of fairy tales.

Be patient in the start, the story gets better.
This books starts off with an almost cliched story of love and tragedy. But while cliches don't usually bother me, in this case the build up for the rest of the story felt a little too dragged. But once you manage to get through this part, you are in for the ride of your life, as everything that happens next in the book will leave you pleasantly surprised. This story slowly but surely cancels out any presumptions you had in your mind after reading the starting few chapters. It transforms from a simple sad love story to an extravagant fantasy that makes you dive deep into your imagination and brings to life prominent aspects of your childhood in an apt German setting.
While the story is interesting, the best part of the book are definitely the 2 protagonists. Jack and Ruthy are extremely relatable at least 80% of the times if not always. They are filled with sarcasm even during some dark times but that makes their characters more believable as this behavior is quite similar to that of today's youth. While at some points in the story they come off as too optimistic and also slightly annoying. But all in all both the characters are quite likable.
So to conclude, I would much rather give this book a 3.5 because there are parts which feel too dragged and make this 138 page book feel way longer, but having said that, it is quite an enjoyable book for people who are open to reading an unexpected and wild imagination filled fantasy.

Not a whole lot to add that others haven't said. Another unique and interesting tale from Jonathan Dunne.
A modern love story intertwined with a fairytale twist. It had it's feverish page turning moments and some moments that took me s bit to get through but overall a very fun read.
It's not the first work I've read by the author and it won't be the last. I would not hesitate to recommend this one.

What a nice read! This book is like a rollercoaster of emotions! (Ironically). It will make you happy, and laugh, and sad, and even make you want to throw the book away. But you can't! You just have to keep reading!

This was a very unique story. It's a story about love, loss and moving on. In a way it's a real life story mixed with a fairytale.
Jack and his girlfriend Jeannie are planning to move in together and get jobs at a new amusement park in town along with their friend Ruthy. On the day that it opens Jack and Jeanie are the first to ride on the roller coaster. There is a horrific accident and Jeanie is killed and Jack is gravely injured. As a result Jack is given Jeanie's heart to save his life. This is the story of Jack and Ruthy's search for closure after Jeanie's death.
It's heartfelt and told with love and even humor at times. The story has some very unique ideas and there is also some magical realism worked in.
I really enjoyed the fairytale aspects of it. I look forward to ready more work by this author.

After reading and really enjoying Hide the Elephant, I was excited to read his newest book. Hearts Anonymous didn't let me down for a variety of reasons. The strongest reason was the fact that I never quite knew what direction he was taking the reader. Was it a Science Fiction story, love story, tale of obsession, fairy tale, dream, morality lesson, or a metaphor to a multitude of our hopes/regrets/dreams?
This story passes through all of the above and does so at a good pace with characters that you become invested in, but don't quite fully understand. The last statement is a compliment because as Ruthy becomes more known in the story, being able to trust her is pivotal to the interpretation of the story.
Great read!

Another great adventure by Jonathan Dunne! A wonderful story that kept me guessing from start to finish. The characters come to life in this well-crafted imaginative fairytale full of emotion, suspense, and surprises. Another highly recommended book by Mr. Dunne!

I love books like these that seem sad on the surface but then turn out to be very funny and upbeat, not to mention all the great things that happen near the end.

Another great book by Jonathan Dunne. Just as with the other two books of his that I've read, wherever I thought he was taking me at the beginning of the tale was not where I ended up. This book is a true adult fairy tale, not just a retelling. I genuinely admire a writer that can make me laugh out loud on one page and make me weep on the next. If you enjoy quirky reads, I highly recommend this one!

Hearts Anonymous: Wittiness and grit, within a dark sweet fairytale
Jonathan Dunne has proven himself to me through the years to be a writer I can depend on, and his latest book, HEARTS ANONYMOUS, again delivers.
First of all, I love how Jonathan Dunne talks about the inspiration for this novel in the front of the book. I urge all readers of HEARTS ANONYMOUS not to skip over that part. What he describes in those opening words sets the tone for the entire book in a way that connects the reader to the impending story.
Now for the story. If we consider the phrase “All the world’s a stage, and the men and women merely actors”, we get a sense of the premise of HEARTS ANONYMOUS. The difference I found however is that instead of existing as actors on a proverbial stage, Jack, Jeanie and Ruthy are living as characters in a fairytale, whose lives seem forever entwined, and whose story remains unfinished. Jack and Jeanie appear to the reader as star-crossed lovers, who are destined to be together long after Jack’s heart stops beating, but in this book’s fairytale twist, we discover that Jack’s life has a more intricate trajectory, that he, nor this reader, could see coming. Surviving a rollercoaster derailment is just the beginning, as he and Ruthy travel together to the origin of a fairytale that they have become embroiled in, or rather have existed in, for quite some time. The ending I truly DID NOT see coming.
Jonathan Dunne does a wonderful job developing the idea of a clock that can transport people through time. As the author of a time travel novel myself, I was intrigued. The description of the clock and all of its intricately moving parts, I loved. And the love story aspect was dark, yet sweet.
It’s no secret that I love the fictitious world of Jonathan Dunne’s novels. He continues to develop Limerick and Old Castle even further with HEARTS ANONYMOUS, a treat for this fan-reader. Not to be overlooked are Arthur Lawless, Bonnie, Mick Munroe, and Sinbad, who graciously have “cameo” mentions within this book’s pages. HEARTS ANONYMOUS is written with the same sarcastic wit that I have grown to love and expect from Mr. Dunne.
In case you weren’t aware, there is an audio format of this book, which I have decided I NEED to have. It would be really something to hear the author himself read the pages of this novel to me, in the way his author-mind intended.
I recommend this book to current fans of Mr. Dunne’s books, but also to any reader who likes a bit of a twist with their fairytales.

Surviving a rollercoaster derailment is just the beginning, as he and Ruthy travel together to the origin of a fairytale that they have become embroiled in, or rather have existed in, for quite some time. The ending I truly DID NOT see coming.
Jonathan Dunne does a wonderful job developing the idea of a clock that can transport people through time. As the author of a time travel novel myself, I was intrigued. The description of the clock and all of its intricately moving parts, I loved. And the love story aspect was dark, yet sweet.
It’s no secret that I love the fictitious world of Jonathan Dunne’s novels. He continues to develop Limerick and Old Castle even further with HEARTS ANONYMOUS, a treat for this fan-reader. Not to be overlooked are Arthur Lawless, Bonnie, Mick Munroe, and Sinbad, who graciously have “cameo” mentions within this book’s pages. HEARTS ANONYMOUS is written with the same sarcastic wit that I have grown to love and expect from Mr. Dunne.
In case you weren’t aware, there is an audio format of this book, which I have decided I NEED to have. It would be really something to hear the author himself read the pages of this novel to me, in the way his author-mind intended.
I recommend this book to current fans of Mr. Dunne’s books, but also to any reader who likes a bit of a twist with their fairytales.

No spoilers or plot reviews here, just a little review about the way this body of work made me feel. I read this book, but wanted to wait a few days before I wrote my review. Some books, you read, and forget all about them after. You could pick the book up in a few years and wonder if you ever read it or not. This book? Nope! ... This is one of those books that you will remember... It stays with you. I keep thinking of different parts of the book and wondering what would have happened if the book had gone in a different direction. This book is an excellent read. It ticks all the boxes really. Mystery, romance, adventure, fantasy... I have heard that some people did not like the ending, but, I did. I liked the flow of, and the directions the story did end up taking. I just wanted more. I wonder if there is another book in their story? Then I think, what if there was? Where would it go? Or, do I really want to know? It was a book that, while it answered all my questions and wrapped up the story, I wanted more but did not want more, but did... You get my dilemma. I love a book that makes me think, and this book did. I have shared it with some of my friends and while one loved it, the other was more, no... that is not how it should end. Wait a minute, wait a minute... LOL I am now anxious to read what others have to say about Hearts Anonymous. I am also looking forward to reading more from Johathan Dunne. I enjoy his writing style and I am now, quite hooked.

Jonathan Dunne has done it again. At the heart of all of Mr Dunne's books is a sweet love story. Hearts Anonymous is no exception. It is an unending fairytale that takes the reader on a quirky, funny, yet poignant journey with plenty of twists and turns. This book has similar themes to his other books such as loving/living dead lovers, carrying your loved one with you, and searching for what's missing. The writing will sweep you away into a world where maybe everything is possible. And of course there are nods to characters and places from Mr. Dunne's other books and a wink to fellow indie writers.
As you read, don't try to guess what will happen - just enjoy the rollercoaster ride. Follow along with the natural and supernatural. Believe and disbelieve the facts. Is there such thing as coincidence or is everything predetermined?

I thought the book had an interesting premise. There were quite a few twists in the plot that kept my interest. I found it interesting that the author chose to write in present tense rather than past tense as most books are written. I would definitely recommend it and would read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this story! The only issue was Jack and his hard head around the end of the book and then all of a sudden, BOOM, everything’s fine.

I had to go back and read it again to fully appreciate it, and I kind of love it when books/movies/tv episodes/video games/etc make me do this.
This is my 2nd Jonathan Dunne book, and while I obviously liked the one about the Elephant better (I. LOVE. Elephants.), this solidified Dunne as an author I want to read more (all) of!
Now, onto the review! Hearts Anonymous follows Jack through an almost fairytale-esque adventure. Written in an ambitious 3rd person present tense the story moves along smoothly with a dialogue-driven forward momentum. There is witty banter between characters, mysteries to unravel, and while certain aspects of the denouement are easily predicted early on, others require re-reading to fully appreciate how well they were discretely foreshadowed.
The book has many can't-stop-reading-it scenes, but balances them well with less stressful/intense moments of character development.
Now, onto the reason for 4 stars. I felt like the characters were a bit inconsistent. Some of this was resolved on re-reading, but other parts they are saying/doing things opposite to what they said/did literally pages earlier. I get that humans are fickle creatures but it was a bit too much flip-flopping for me. I also felt that some of the relationships were underdeveloped, which made certain parts of the book (like the vague non-spoiler phrasing I'm trying to use?) feel unconvincing and a little shallow/hollow.
BUT. Overall I thought it was a really fun read, very not like most of what is out there in fiction-land, and written creatively and well.
Of course, now I have to go buy all those other Jonathan Dunne books out there... sorry wallet.

What would you do to get back the love of your life after a striking tragedy? After Jack proposes to Jeanie on the maiden ride of the new adventure park's rollercoaster, the one Jeanie's BFF Ruthie dubbed "The Titanic", the ride derails. Now several months later, in a last ditch attempt to get Jeanie back, Jack recruits Ruthie to try to locate a time machine that Ruthie found in a fairy tale.
I loved the real emotions that Jack and his family feel after he spends nearly a year in the hospital. I also loved that he was so disinterested in the money he received from the amusement park that he, Jeanie, and Ruthie worked at on opening night. All that he is concerned about is getting his fiance back, and the lengths that he will go through to do so. This is a very heartfelt and realistic feeling book about love, loss, and friendship. I know you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Such a beautiful, heartwrenching story about time, love, fate and destiny.
It'll make you think. Is everything a coincidence or is it predetermined? Do we walk a path choose for us or do we make that path? What does the future hold?
Time will always have the answer in the end, whether you like that answer is immaterial to Time because it tends not to keep friends.

this was the first time I read a book by the author. it was a little different type of book for me but I enjoyed it none the less.really interesting it was. its about fairy tales, time clocks, going back in time if you could. I liked it and would read more books by the author.

Once again I was sucked into one of Jonathan’s stories. I was not expecting the way the story went, and I really liked that it made me think back on past parts and seeing little vague hints. I definitely recommend this book and anything he writes.

Uno de los personajes principales me ha resultado odioso de principio a fin, y precisamente el final me ha decepcionado por el giro que dan con él. Una lástima, la historia tenía mucho potencial.
