Divorcee Jenny Lake had to find out. The virile stranger didn't look like your average neighborhood ice cream man, and Jenny's neighbors were convinced he was some sort of criminal. Jenny couldn't believe it. But was that because she was already dangerously attracted to enigmatic, mysterious Nick?

Nick's mission was to keep close tabs on Jenny; posing as the man in the white truck was the perfect cover. But he'd never accept this sexy, earthy mother of two as a forger and a thief. Not Jenny, the only woman who had ever made him think about hearth and home .... Jenny, who'd melted his cold loner's heart--and who could never be his.

Kathleen Korbel writes such wonderful books and The Ice Cream Man was a good one as well.

Jenny can't believe it that they have a handsome young guy selling ice-creams on their street and that she is fantasizing about him. Jenny is about to turn thirty and has two young children to raise and an ex who defines the term jerk. She barely has enough money to get by and works hard to make sure her kids are not effected by their sorry excuse for a father. Their neighborhood is kind of close-knit and people suspect the new guy of being a drug dealer.

The guy is actually Nick, a cop who is undercover in an assignment he hates. Nick doesn't like kids but he is being punished for being outspoken and now someone is committing mail fraud and Jenny is the suspect since her finances are so precarious. Very soon he is convinced she is not guilty, he's seen her with her kids how loving she is despite what she has, she defines his dream.

The police and her friends ask Jenny to keep an eye on Nick and they are slowly thrown together but then Jenny finds out through Nick that he is a student of law and she hates that, lawyers short-changed her, the child support never comes through and the amount is very paltry. She is tired of being humiliated and asking for something she knows he deserves

Throughout the book we see Jenny struggle to give her children a good life even if it means accepting money from her family or calling her jerky ex, you can see how wary she is, how burned. And when he ex says something to her, I loved her melt-down it showed how hurt she was and the way Nick comforted her, I loved it.

Nick is someone used to being alone, his experiences in foster homes has made him like that and even though he enjoys spending time with Jenny's kids, he doesn't know he is up for it. Jenny wants a family above all else.

I enjoyed the book it was very realistic. I liked how sweet Nick was, how he confessed that he loved her and how they found out what both of them were doing and laughed about it. I also loved how Nick showed her ex as well that he could no longer get away with the law.

A pretty good book.

Ah the 80s, I have such fond memories of that portion of my childhood. And reading The Ice Cream Man brought it all back, in a good way.

Jenny is a divorced, single parent who's struggling to get by, thanks to a deadbeat, but wealthy, ex who's constantly late with his child support payments. There's a new ice cream man in her neighborhood. A really hot ice cream man who has a ponytail and a tattoo and looks out of place in her neighborhood. When her neighbors and the cops ask her to keep an eye on Nick, it's no hardship for Jenny. But is he dangerous? Is he really the drug dealer everyone seems to think he is?

Nick is in hell working his undercover assignment in this suburban neighborhood. Especially when his suspect turns out to be such a sweet, but perpetually frazzled mom whom he falls in love with.

Being that this is set 30 years ago, it's surprisingly fresh. It's got timeless themes - single parenthood, undercover work, trying to find one's place in the world, and even though the heat level is low compared to more contemporary works, I really enjoyed The Ice Cream Man. It's really well-written and the characters are wonderfully realistic with flaws and problems like we all have. This is the second of the Korbel Classics I've read, and I know after reading this one, that it certainly not be the last.

I had no idea that Eileen Dreyer, an author I have enjoyed reading in the past, also writes under the name of Kathleen Korbel. What a happy surprise to be offered a romance written by her in 1988! Now, when reading a book from decades before it is wise to remember that life and romances were different then and books written will reflect that. That said…I thoroughly enjoyed this book :) The story took me back to a simpler time when doors were often left unlocked, women were more often stay at home mom’s and ice cream trucks visited neighborhoods where I lived.

Jenny Lake is scraping to make ends meet for herself and her two young children. Her wealthy ex-husband is a deadbeat dad living the highlife with his new wife and delinquent in child support payments. Into Jenny’s life comes The Ice Cream Man, Nick. Nick is fantasy material for Jenny but a hot questionably drug dealing conversational item among the women of Jenny’s neighborhood. Nick is not what he appears to be on the surface…nope…not at all. As the story progresses Nick and Jenny get to know and begin to fall for one another. They have ups and downs and interesting things happen that I found thoroughly enjoyable.

The Ice Cream Man (Korbel Classic Romance Humorous Series #1) by Eileen Dreyer The Ice Cream Man (Korbel Classic Romance Humorous Series, Book 1) By: Eileen Dreyer
It's A Blast From The Past Discovering What The HEART always knows...
She's a struggling Single-Mom who only wants to do right by her kids; unfortunately, her Ex is making that virtually impossible...
Now, she's being embroiled in an investigation into "The Ice Cream Man" who everyone's sure is peddling MORE than just Pops outta his truck of Frozen Delights...
However, the closer she gets to the neighborhood Ice Cream STUD, the MORE she's convinced he's innocent...
In fact, she just wants to drop the whole thing, but it seems forces are conspiring against her...
You see, "The Ice Cream Man" might not be dealing Snow Rock to kids, but he's not on the up & up either...
He's carrying his own secrets around, close to his chest, which only makes him look more suspicious...
To bad for him that he's falling for his primary target, & getting in deeper by the day...
Will either of these lovebirds survive his stint as "The Ice Cream Man" intact as their HEARTS discover how to be the BEST judge of character?!
I was granted an ARC of Eileen Dreyer's "The Ice Cream Man (Korbel Classic Romance Humorous Series, Book 1)" via Booksprout; I really enjoyed this Blast from the past, & the struggles each character not only was presented with, but also overcame. Sometimes, it really is ALL about your outlook!! I recommend this book based upon its own merits. All opinions expressed within this review are uniquely my own & freely given.
Until next time... Happy Reading!

It’s back to the 80s! No smartphones, cell phones the size of a brick with a two-foot antenna, and pagers. Ice cream trucks still cruise the neighborhood on hot summer days. Stay at home moms are fairly normal, not a rare breed. Kids ride bikes, play ball, hang around outside. Ahhhh, the nostalgia.

Nick has gone undercover as the neighborhood ice cream man. His mission? Find who is stealing checks out of mailboxes. Jenny has been appointed by her neighbors to figure out what the ice cream man is really up to. Why her? Well, she’s single. OK, technically a single mom. With two small children. They need ice cream daily. Why is she watching the ice cream man? Simple. He’s most likely a drug dealer who is going to destroy the children in the neighborhood by getting them hooked on drugs. What could possibly go wrong?

This is a really fun, fairly clean, sweet story. And, yes, it is truly set in the late 80s which makes it even more fun.

A really good contemporary romance. 💞💓💞

I really enjoyed this book! It was "originally published in 1988" according to the author and it's a fun glimpse back into a simpler time before cell phones. It was also a more naive time when people actually spoke to each other. (Yes, I remember those times and miss them.) But back to the book... It is about Jenny, a divorced mother of two, who struggling to just survive on her income since "the Jerk" of an ex-husband hasn't been paying child support and Nick, who is an undercover cop investigating Jenny for mail fraud and theft. It's not necessarily a "sweet" romance as there are a couple of "sex scenes" although they are definitely tame by today's standards.😉😊😍

A really well-written light hearted romance love story. A single mom who is struggling because her rich ex won't make support payments on time. Nick is a private detective that is posing as the ice cream man. It has wonderful realistic characters and funny secondary characters. With someone stealing senior citizen's monthly checks Nick is sent in he keep an on Jenny thinking she is part of the forgery ring because he caught her in others mailboxes. She is keeping an on him the icream man, he doesn't look like any other ice cream man is he the one dealing drugs? Lots of laughs in this romantic semi-suspenseful story.

There is drug dealing in the area and divorcee mum, Jenny, thinks it could be the gorgeous ice cream van man whose the chief suspect. Little does she realise that he is a cop and she is HIS chief suspect but he's trying to prove that evidence wrong. Nick shouldn't fall for this gorgeous woman with a houseful of kids. They're not in their 20's and both have 'baggage' but does it really matter in the end when there is that sizzling chemistry between them?  The dialogue is fast and witty and I loved the way they skirted around each other.  This is a light hearted, humourous romance that will keep me coming back for more from this fantastic author. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. She is a divorcee that suspects the new ice cream man might be selling more than ice cream from his truck. He is an undercover cop watching the frazzled mom that is the prime suspect in a check-kiting case. Neither expects for a love connection and a sweet romance to occur while uncovering the secrets about each other.

While this book was originally written in 1988 and newly released on ebook, it still stands the test of time. I enjoyed the whimsy characters (her neighbors are a bunch of fun-loving snoops and gossips), the unexpected attraction and romance, and the touch of mystery.

A cop undercover as an icecream man mistaken by the good housewives of suburbia as a drug dealer and investigated by them. A funny story, especially as he falls for one of these women and it gets complicated on who investigates who and for what reason. A comedy of errors and mistaken identities, funny, warm and really entertaining.

Throwback to 1988 Rom/Com
Real life of the single divorced woman in 1988. This is a great novel. The author absolutely captures life as I new it. This book has withstood the test of time with class and honor. I usually stick to clean romances. While this book has plenty of spicy parts, they are integral to the story and easy to skip past. I can see why this book has won so many awards and why this author is still writing. I can't wait to read more of her older books as they become available digitally. I received this ARC book for free and voluntarily chose to post my honest review.

What a fantastically entertaining read. The comparisons between the perfect woman next door and how the lead thinks of herself is wonderfully written, as is the interplay between all characters. I really enjoyed the fact the leads are not in their early 20’s as often happens in the romance genre. The story-line is filled with humour and the characters are loveable; combined with a detailed backdrop and skilled word-play, this is a must read novel for any true romantic.

I enjoyed reading this romantic story. I was easily engaged from the beginning. The author didn't irritate me with constant reminders of the two characters' undercover work. We understood why they were involved in order to progress their romance. The main characters were likable and believable. I am definitely recommending this book.

I received a complimentary book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the reprint of an older book that Kathleen Korbel wrote in 1988. .I had read this book when it was originally printed, and remembered that I had loved reading it. In spite of that, I didn’t really remember the details of the story so I was looking forward to rereading it.

In an author’s note in the beginning of the book, the author writes that, upon reflection, she had decided not to update the book. I am very happy that this was her choice. It is not always necessary to modernize every book, and it was nice to relive the days of no cell phones, no internet and no emails. It was the days of beepers when it was necessary to use someone else’s phone to call back the person who beeped you. It was a time when a person with a pony tail might be considered a trouble-maker. I also think it would be fun for younger people to see what we “old-folk” had to live with at this time. I enjoyed that she headed chapter one with the date “1988” as if it was a historical – which I guess would be true for some people.

This book is humorous, but it is also suspenseful. The heroine is a “divorced, underpaid working mother who lives next to the Perfect Woman,” which bothered her a great deal. She wanted to stay home also, but couldn’t. Her husband is supposed to pay alimony but usually doesn’t’. She is a teacher in the winter and supplements her salary by working at a grocery store in the summer. I found this interesting because, again, it shows how much times have changed.

The police think she is taking checks from mailboxes to pay her own bills, and Nick, the ice cream man, is a policeman who is watching her. Even though this book is short, the author does a great job of establishing the characters and developing the plot.

This is obviously a professional writer who knows what she is doing and does it very well. Of course, no wonder, because Kathleen Korbel is Eileen Dreyer. She won the Rita Award for this book, and she definitely deserved it. I would highly recommend this book to all romance lovers. Kathleen Korbel and Eileen Dreyer have never let me down

The Ice Cream Man, is the latest book by talented author Eileen Dreyer which is a rerelease of a previous novel she wrote under the name Kathleen Korbel. The Ice Cream Man is a delightful tale of two people who have been beat down in their lives, but somehow over melting bomb pops they find a way to heal each other. Jenny is a single mom struggling to raise two children on her own while working as a math teacher during the school year, and a grocery clerk during the summer. She works hard to take care of her kids without any help from the ex-husband that she put through law school. Nick is the neighborhood ice cream man, but the close knit neighborhood does not believe that the handsome, brooding, sensual man could possibly be just dishing up cool sweetness. The ladies with the aid of an inept police detective decide Jenny should scope out Nick and see if he is selling drugs to the neighborhood children, but in return Nick is watching Jenny because as a police officer she is the prime suspect in a check fraud scam. Together they skirt the really reason for their attraction, but the more time they spend together the more they realize that life is all about taking chances and fighting for the things that mean the most to them. This book is a funny fast paced read, and I recommend it highly. I was given this book to read by the author in exchange for an honest review.
