She was everything he could ever want in life, but Jake Kendall knew Amanda Marlow would never be his. She had come to the Diamond K horse ranch to research her new novel and had slowly managed to capture his heart. But Jake's world stopped at the ranch's boundaries, and his was a life he was destined to live alone. He had forfeited his freedom to leave and to love a long time ago.
Jake Kendall was the most complex man Amanda had ever met. He spurned every attempt at friendship yet deep in his eyes Amanda sense a longing so strong it threatened to consume her. Whatever tormented the hardened rancher, Amanda was certain it would be love that would set him free.
Amanda Marlow comes to Jake Kendall’s ranch to gather background material for her latest book. Jake lives a very isolated existence within a limited range from his ranch. Amanda grew up in Appalachia and is familiar with a hard scrabble existence but Jake sees her as cultured and worldly due to the celebrity from her writing. As these two grow more attracted, Jake’s reclusive life style becomes the issue. The reason for it is not revealed until 3/4th of the way through but I guessed what it was before then. Although the ending seemed contrived, the incident was needed to bring everything to a head. The issue is handled very well and I enjoyed the story.
The book was interesting enough. It had some sex scenes, and I am wondering how a man, with several broken ribs, was able to have sex. It just wasn't believable.

I struggled to get through this book. I found Jake quite an unlikable characters he treated Amanda badly just because he had taken against her. She put up with being treated badly because she pretty much fell in love with him at first sight (although I struggled to see it as anything other than lust at first sight as why would you fall in love with anyone who disliked you on sight and start much tried to run you out of town).
Lots of people love this book, so for many readers it obviously hits just the right notes but for me personally there wasn't enough character development and too many smouldering looks.
I was having supper out when I started to read this book and I found that I did not want to stop reading it, I went home early so I could continue to do so. I would recommend this book.I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and I also bought it.
Jake's Way (Kendall #2) was written in 1992 by Eileen Dreyer under the pen name Kathleen Korbel. I do not remember having read anything by the author under any name enjoyed this story immensely. This is a time I remember well, we brought our first home computer around the, cell phones were more bag phones, it was and Brother Mario was a hot game using the TV. While the author could have updated the story, I am glad that she did not. It starts with the date at the first chapter, making it more or less historical fiction.
Life on the Wyoming ranch, is Jake’s world; a refuge but also a confinement. It wasn’t until well over half of the story that the reason for this is guessed by the visiting writer/professor, who falls in love with Jake. Jake has much to love about him, strong, loyal family member, hard worker, and sacrificial big brother. I thought at first it is his pride that causes him to hide his secret failing but I really think it is shame. That made the story sad since he had so many other wonderful qualities; did I mention, perseverance which would serve him well.
I found these characters to be as memorable as well as engaging. I became invested in the outcome, finding it to be a hard to put down story. It is a great story for 1992 or 2017. I want to read more of this series now.
4.5 Stars The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book.
Sweet story. It has "Yellowstone" vibes in the scenic descriptions of the area and mentions of ranch life. Kathleen Korbel (Eileen Dryer) is a beautifully descriptive writer. However, she can trip over the line to purple prose. In "Jake's Way" there was just the right amount of descriptive pieces for me. This was a Silhouette Intimate Moments in 1991, before being a title for Kindle Unlimited in 2021. With the fewer number of words allowed in a categorical romance, many of these books have a rushed or insta-love element as a result. This one felt really rushed initially, but backed down to build tension as the story evolved.
I have not read anything by this author prior to reading Jake’s way, and I was definitely missing out. This is a great story that pulls on your heartstrings. The characters are complex and believable and the story keeps you engaged.
Jake gave up his hopes and dreams long ago to provide for a better life for his three siblings and has managed to make them believe that living on the ranch is what he wants. But when Amanda Marlow comes to stay on the ranch to research her next book, she sees through his façade and realizes that there is more to Jake than meets the eye. Can Amanda help Jake see that he can have a life outside the confines of the ranch without giving it up?
I can easily recommend this book and suggest you give it a go.

A really enjoyable modern cowboy romance.🤠💖
This book is about Jake, his family, and ranch and Amanda. Jake has spent the majority of his life caring for his younger brother, sisters, and their family ranch without doing much for himself. To the point that he is beginning to feel that the ranch has become his prison. That's when his youngest sister, Lee, has her teacher/mentor come to the ranch to spend time in the small cabin on the property to wind down from her last book tour. Amanda has been looking for somewhere that feels like home now that things have changed so much in her own life and she thinks she's found it at the "Double K" ranch. But as much as this book is filled with a budding romance, it comes with a twist that could destroy everything for all of them.🤫🤯💞
This is a wonderful story based around the romance between Jake and Amanda. He has run a ranch so that it is famous for the work he does and put three of his siblings through school when their parents died. he is one young man that wants to do the best for his family. But he has a secret and when Amanda, a writer, comes to stay on his ranch she could uncover this secret. So beautifully written by Eileen Dryer and Kathleen Korbel who are both new authors to me. I like their writing style which is relaxed but so very believable and they seem so 3-dimensional. This book caught my imagination and I would certainly enjoy reading more about the other characters in this book. I look forward to reading more of their stories. 1. A story with wit, humor, and pathos by an author who loves and respects the people she writes about; 2. An independent adult heroine with grit, class, sass, and the ability to love unconditionally; 3. A flawed alpha-male hero with integrity, the strength to rise above, and the courage to love a woman who won't enable him; 4. Memorable secondary characters who enliven and fill out the story; 5. Lush and vivid descriptions that make you see, hear, small, taste, and feel as though you are right there; 6. Steamy, beautiful, but non-explicit sex scenes that support the storyline; 7. A romance with a beautiful, hard-won, and heartwarming HEA ending. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wonderful Modern Western Romance This is a wonderful romance. It is a modern western set in a Wyoming horse ranch. It is pretty spicy with several graphic lovemaking scenes. It is also the best romance that I have read in a long time. Emotionally, it encompasses exactly how one partner's strength can hold them both up. The plot is excellent, with as much about the horses and the ranch as there is about the budding romance. This is a longer book with plenty of rich detail about all of the important things that makes fiction real to the reader. The characters are also completely real and believable. I bought this book and this is my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed Jake and Amanda's book it was well written and held my interest right from the start.Jake has been running the ranch to help give his siblings a better life and he is okay with that most days even if it means giving up on his own dreams but when Author Amanda comes to stay as research for her next book she realises he wanted more for his life and is hoping to help him get his dreams.A really sweet read I liked it and look forward to reading more.
No humor at all in Eileen Dryer's love story set against the mountenous Rockies.. Jake Kendall runs his horse ranch his way when he meets his sister Lee's best friend, Amanda, a writer about the American west. She gets under his skin and discovers the secret he's been keeping for years. Well written, sex scenes like poetry, I liked it a lot. The book cover is drawn so beautifully one sees a gorgeous Jake. Recommended.
This was a really great story. I loved the way the story pulls you in and makes you want to see what is next. There is some surprises. Amanda and Jake are both stubborn but fit together so very well. I would recommend this story to everybody. I received this book as an ARC and voluntarily reviewed it
he has done everything he wanted and she comes into his life to research a novel, it threatened his way of life. see what she will bring to his life. will it ruin everything he has worked for? will she make him realise everything will be alright

Amanda was a writer who came to Jake's ranch for peace and quiet so she could research and prepare her next book. Jake worked tirelessly to keep his horse ranch running smoothly. He had the help he needed and didn't want a "fancy lady" getting in the way. When she discovered his secret, things really flew.
Love the way the story draws you in,keeps you guessing almost until the end.I couldn’t figure out why Jake kept reminding Amanda of her Uncle Mick! Then it all came out…I’m so glad she stayed to show him how much she cared and that he finally saw the light ! Although it did take almost losing his sister and DID cost him his valuable horse…love his ranch help too !
When a writer decided to go west for research on her next book, she took the offer a secluded cabin from a student. Unfortunately, the student didn't give notice to her older brother and the fireworks begins the instant they met. The man held onto a secret all his life and it takes her months to uncover his shame. Enjoy
This is an amazing story that kept me awake until the end. No speed reading for me just savoring the whole thing. My recommendation is don't start to read this book without plenty of time it is so captivating you have difficulty taking breaks.. Relax and enjoy.
I first read one of the historical books by Eileen Dryer and loved it. Contemporary isn't my first choice but when it's an author I already know I like I will read everything. This is a great book, with lyrical description, deep and tormented characters, and drama.
What a wonderful book. This is one you can connect with. It catches your attention and doesn't let it go. It is about love, life, friendships, truth, shame and so much more. I recommend it. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.
This is an amazing story. The relationship between Jake and Amanda is so descriptively written you can just feel the electricity between them A captivating read oabouta brother's private struggle and his devotion to his siblings.
Watching the story unfold was like a movie in my mind. I haven't seen such good descriptive writing in a long time and this let me paint the stage, smell the food and feel as though I was in the room with the characters. Didn't want it to end.
This is a great story of a rancher who's been hiding a very personal and painful secret and a determined woman as they fall in love. Very, very descriptive, beautiful writing.
This was a wonderful book but done different than most books. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am sure I will enjoy the next book in the set. The characters were great. The author was marvelous.
