Rate this book
Love kindles when a fake engagement brings best friends together.

World Champion snowboarder, Wyatt Fernandez, should be hitting the slopes in the Andes and spending his days teaching as the new ski instructor. But an emergency means he’s heading off the family’s tree farm with his best friend, Harper. She’s too busy with her books and earning tenure to notice his hopes for more than friendship.

Homebody and nutritionist, Dr. Harper Bright, must let go of her coveted summer research position so she can help on the tree farm...with Wyatt. He might push past her comfort zone, but he has always “gotten” her. She doesn’t want to scare off her best friend just because he is suddenly far more interesting than the nutritional benefits of broccoli. In order to keep their friendship intact, Harper has to pretend she is not infatuated with her best friend.

When Wyatt names Harper as his fiancé to appease his father and prevent returning to Chile early, he never dreams Harper might actually have to play the part. Wyatt wants more than a reluctant fake fiancé. And he has one last summer to convince Harper that they’re better together.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q: Why do you write?

A: I was not on the school newspaper team, but because my mother was the advisor for it, when someone didn't turn in their assigned article, I often got selected as a volunteer to fill that spot. The school administrators liked to see articles about the aquaculture project the district had gotten a grant for, but everyone hated writing about the boring, smelly fish. One February, the assigned student went AWOL and I sat in my last period study hall trying to figure out how I could combine tilapia and Valentine's day into an article that would make my mother happy. The resulting article, which started off with a line that included, "Could there be love lurking beneath the murky depths?" won an award from the county paper, and ran on the front page of the school newspaper. I sat in the school cafeteria and watched people read my article and laugh. It was a great feeling, not winning the award or having my article lead, but because I had made people smile. That's why I write.

Q: What books do you write?

A: I write clean and wholesome contemporary romance with humor set in small towns and rural areas. I'm back on the straight and narrow from my wild high school days; no more fish erotica. The reading order for my series follows below.

SWEET HAVEN FARM

HARVEST MOON HOMECOMING (novella)
BETTER TOGETHER (book 1)

Q: Why should readers pick up your books?

A: You'll get all the feel-good tingles of a great love story with no graphic sex, swearing or violence. You'll laugh along with relatable heroines and hunky heroes as they weather life's storms and fall in love. I enjoy throwing in some fun science, history and local, rural trivia (Did you know that you can hold an egg in the palm of your hand and squeeze as hard as you can and it won't crack?) so you might learn something. I hope my books are uplifting and encouraging.

Harper has worked hard for her successful academic career, but when her mother and husband need help at the family farm she doesn't hesitate and takes a break from work, even if it means risking the biggest achievement she might ever accomplish. Wyatt and Harper grew up together. They've been best friends ever since his uncle took him in. Harper's mother and Wyatt's uncle might be married, but Harper and Wyatt don't feel like brother and sister. Wyatt has a secret crush on Harper, but he doesn't think she's ever noticed him as a potential partner and Harper hides her feelings for Wyatt because she can't imagine he'll like her that way. Will they ever be brave enough to share what's inside their hearts?

Wyatt's father runs a resort in Chile. Wyatt is great at skiing and snowboarding and has won several prizes. He's athletic and a great asset to his father's business. His father is solely focused on his resort and doesn't understand Wyatt's need to help his uncle. To buy himself time he tells his father he's engaged and wants to spend time with his fiancée before returning to Chile for good. He asks Harper to join him for his next visit to Chile, so he can introduce her to the family. It's pretty difficult for them to remember their relationship is fake, but they're both so different, they aren't meant to be together, are they?

Better Together is an amazing heartwarming story. Harper is incredibly smart and hardworking. She's also kind, caring and sweet. Wyatt loves spending time with her. They always have fun, she understands him well and they can talk for hours. I liked their easy friendship, the constant challenges they give each other and their beautiful connection on many different levels. Wyatt is a wonderful man. He badly wants love and approval and Harper is the only one who truly knows him. I loved how close they are, their love feels natural, real and honest. Jessie Gussman perfectly understands what it means to be soul mates and the result is a gorgeous love story filled with many fantastic layers.

Jessie Gussman skillfully combines people, emotions and places and makes sure they all belong together. Better Together has such stunning settings. I loved the farm and its surroundings and the resort in Chile is impressive as well. Jessie Gussman effortlessly makes each place she's writing about come to life with fabulous vivid descriptions. Her writing has a lovely flow and she has a captivating tone of voice. I read Better Together in one sitting, I was completely enchanted by the story and didn't want to stop reading before finding out if Harper and Wyatt would get their happily ever after or not. Better Together is a fascinating feelgood romance with plenty of surprising twists and turns and breathtaking true love.

5 STARS= Excellent= Immensely Enjoyable= I loved it...!

The book kept me engrossed, made me laugh, and warmed my heart. The writing was awesome! The author has a unique way of expressing the characters' thoughts and feelings which I found very appealing. Plus, I loved the dialogues, and the witty bantering between the main characters. Wyatt and Harper were realistic and lovable as individuals, and as a couple, they were, as the title says, better together! Their love shone throughout the story, they balanced and complemented each other, and the goal they eventually set for their lives is one I’m sure they'll enjoy trying to achieve together :-) Highly Recommended!

I received a copy from the author; this is my honest review
-It’s better to read the prequel first, Harvest Moon Homecoming. This story is about 10 years later.
-Wyatt and Harper start their friendship in the prequel. You can tell by the end of the book that they are close friends.
-Here, in this story, they are so much more. Now both adults and mature, they have to make do with what they have and take decisions according to their heart or their brain? Maybe both? They are such a great couple; they balance and complement each other out.
-Mostly funny, many LOL moments, some suspense, lots of romance.
-I like the author’s vocabulary. She doesn’t use words like thing, very, etc. No, she uses the correct word or expression, such as petrichor and incinerate.
-I would have loved to hear more about Avery. She sounds quirky.

This is the first romance novel that I've given a 5 rating in a long time. I love that the Harper Bright, the female character in the book has a PhD and a career. She's worked hard for her career and is about to earn tenure. Then she realizes that she is in love with her best friend, Wyatt. He has a very different life than Harper has. He loves adventure while she loves security.

This book has elements of all romances, but the stresses that that this couple encounters are real and not contrived. We get drawn into the lifestyle choices that need to be considered. It's not easy and it happens to real-life couples. I love the final comprises that Jessie Gussman, the author has created for this believable story. The book is well written and the conversations are natural and flow well.

This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. I strongly recommend this book. I was provided this book for free for an honest review.

Great, warm and lovely story!
With Wyatt, life never has a dull moment. In this book, Harper and he have one crazy adventure after the other. Even if Harper values a safe home and a good book.
I love the adventures and the banter between them.

Better Together is proof that a contemporary romance doesnt need sex, strong language and violence to be enjoyed. This was a sweet fake fiance romance filled with lots of humour between Harper and Wyatt. They have been best friends for ten years since Harper's mom martied Wyatt's uncle, but one little white lie to Wyatt's father and they bith discover that they have deeper feelings for each other.

This is my first Gussman book and overall I enjoyed it. I loved the friendship between Harper and Wyatt. They had so much fun and perfectly balanced the other. A real case of opposites attract. I loved their banter especially while they were in difficult situations. Much of their relationship was based on laughter. And their pretend argument was hilarious. I think both characters were likable and I cared about both of them but the story was aptly named because they really are better together. Wyatt helped Harper to step out of her comfort zone and Harper was able to show Wyatt that some caution might not be a bad thing. And both of them really wanted the other to be truly happy even if that meant not realizing their own true happiness.

I was worried that the resolve was going to be the woman giving up all her life goals so the man could accomplish his. I find that typical in romance books and greatly annoying so I was pleased to see the compromise as it played out.

I also half expected there to be some "mean girl" incident to try to ruin the relationship. I was glad that didn't develop as it might have with another author. It seemed that, thankfully, there were multiple cliches that were avoided.

Sex: intense kissing
language: no
violence: no

This is an extremely clean relationship book. It is a sweet friends to being in love friends. I found that about three quarters of the book was just Harper and Wyatt dancing around each other not knowing what the other was thinking or feeling. Harper realized she wanted more than friendship with Wyatt. Wyatt for about ten years has wanted Harper but thought she would never feel anything for him other than being friends. It was frustrating to keep reading the same thing over and over. Does she think of me, does he think of me. I wish he would kiss me. etc., etc. Although there was some levity here and there that made me laugh. There were also moments of true friendship and love expressed. Over all it is a sweet romance but the mating dance was too much and took too much of the book up. I am glad that it had a satisfactory HEA. It could have used an epilogue documenting the wedding, how Harper would create a job for herself in Chile, things like that. WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Love kindles when a fake engagement brings best friends together.

Wyatt Fernandez is a thrill seeker and involved in all kinds of outdoor sports that are often dangerous. But an emergency means he’s heading off the family’s tree farm with his best friend and step-cousin, Harper. His uncle's farm is where Wyatt was sent at 17 when his father couldn't be bothered with him. That was ten years ago, and he's still crazy about Harper. She’s been so busy getting her doctorate and earning tenure to notice his hopes for more than friendship.

When Wyatt names Harper as his fiancée to appease his father and prevent returning to Chile early, he never dreams Harper might actually have to play the part. Wyatt wants more than a reluctant fake fiancé. And he has one last summer to convince Harper that they’re better together.

MY TAKE
Gussman does such a great job of grabbing your emotions. The set up with Wyatt and Harper being such good friends (and now more) is great. They are both committed and for Wyatt, obligated, to spend their lives in different places. She lost her dad when she was young and had an unreasonable fear of travel. He's seeking his father's approval and agrees to take over the family ski resort in Chile.

The summer of helping her family and then making a trip to Chile for Wyatt's father to meet Harper, provides the two plenty of time together. All it does is reaffirm to Wyatt that she's the love of his life. And it awakens in her a realization of how she really feels about him. But she could never live in Chile. She's worked years toward getting her degrees and the achieving tenure.

I loved these two and their witty banter. Their romantic chemistry is powerful as is their loving concern for each other. They were so right for each other.

If mention of a little tongue action while kissing is a concern, be warned there is one instance in this book. It certainly didn't take it out of the sweet range and there wasn't a lot of description. Easy enough to skip over because this is a great romance.

4 1/2 stars.

I loved this story that takes place about ten years after Book 1 in this Sweet Haven Small Town Romance Series. Love kindles when a fake engagement brings best friends together. Wyatt and Harper have both grown up and have continued to be best friends even though their lives have taken them in different directions.

Wyatt Fernandez, has become a World Champion snowboarder, and he travels all over the world. He keeps in touch with Harper and occasionally returns to the Christmas Tree Farm. That was the place he had lived when his uncle took him in after the death of his mother. His Uncle Fink was now married to Harper's mom Ellie. When Fink ends up in the hospital with a severe illness, Wyatt and Harper have to step up to take care of the farm. Now if Wyatt could only get Harper to see him as more than just a friend.

Dr. Harper Bright, has worked hard for her degrees in nutrition and once she finishes this summer research project, she will be up for tenure at the college. Giving up that position was hard but she would do anything to help save the farm. Working again with Wyatt has opened her eyes to see him in a new way. He is no longer the boy she had grown up with but a very attractive man.

Harper's safe homebody world is about to be shaken up as she agrees to be Wyatt's fake fiance and travels with him to his father's resort in Chile. She see things about Wyatt she never knew and something wonderful is happening between them. Will Harper and Wyatt have a chance at a real relationship or will their different lifestyles keep them apart?

My review today is on the Christian Romance, Better Together. This is book two in the series Sweet Haven Farm Sweet Small Town Romance. I'm a big fan of Jessie's. I didn't win anything in her contest so she sent me this book. It's well-written, delightful, and full of faith. I know you are going to love it.

Harper Bright has been best friends with Wyatt for years even though they are totally opposites. She is a stay-at-home, homebody while he is all about adventure. Her stepfather becomes ill and she must help save the farm. Wyatt agrees to help her. She finds herself becoming attracted to the man but he is leaving soon and she is doing a research project for her tenure at the college where she works. Nothing will come of it. Her life is all about security, home, and family.

Wyatt Fernandez has been in love with Harper for years. He has traveled all over the world but is to move to Chile soon and help his father with the resort. His father never married his mother. His mother died ten years ago and made him promise to become closer to his father. All he wanted was to make his dad proud but that hadn't happened. Now he had promised to go to Chile and work and eventually take over the resort. Can he leave Harper? He knows she will never go.

Can these two find a way to be together? God has a plan for them, a plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A good plan for peace and not for destruction. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

This was a fun, easy read. The story moved at a good pace. I enjoyed the connection between the two main characters; it was easy to believe they had been best friends for a decade. The supporting characters felt real and multifaceted as well. Jessie Gussman did a great job showing the dilemma between not changing for the person you love and seeing your need to change as the result of loving someone.

I wish we could have had a glimpse of the growing up years of Harper and Wyatt, perhaps flashbacks showing how their friendship developed. Instead, we were thrown immediately into an already well-developed friendship that just needed the final push to become a romantic relationship.

I also really appreciated the way the idea of a summer fling was handled by many of the characters. It was seen as irresponsible and disrespectful toward the other person. In a world that seems to ignore this tension in light of what feels good at the moment, this was refreshing.

"I just wanted a little time with her. I knew it couldn't last. I just couldn't pass it up."
"I understand. Not saying it's good or right, but sometimes you want something so bad, a little bit is better than nothing at all."

Oh the struggle!

Received this book as an ARC for my honest review.

The story line was ok. Wyatt has loved Harper for 10 years and Harper has no clue. They have been best friends for over 10 years. Harper gets a call that her step-father is in the hospital and they need Harper and hopefully Wyatt to take over the farm while he is in the hospital. They tried and tried to find people and finally they find a 3rd cousin that can come. Meanwhile, Wyatt's dad is trying to get him down to Chile to run the business and Wyatt just wants to be with Harper. Wyatt screws up and says he has a fiance and then asks Harper to be his fake fiance. Harper starts having feelings for Wyatt also but neither one will tell each other. It got really confusing for a bit when I realized that Wyatt and Harper are Step-Cousins but then I realized how that happened then it wasn't so confusing. Then as the story develops apparently Wyatts step-sister likes Wyatt also. I am not sure why the author had to make everyone related as it makes the story a little akward.
The story line was cute and there were parts that really held my attention but for the most part it read like a YA story. There was no connection between the characters for me.

Wow what and amazing story! This was an extraordinarily well written and thought through. I so cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
This is Harper and Wyatt’s story. She has worked hard for her success, but when her mother needs help at the family farm she doesn't hesitate to take time off to go and help out, even if it means risking the biggest achievement she might ever accomplish. Wyatt and Harper grew up together. They've been best friends ever since his uncle took him in. her mom is married to Wyatt’s Uncle. But they never felt like siblings. She has feeling for Wyatt. But she hides them well so much so he does not this she even noticed him. His dad runs a resort and is solely focused on his resort and doesn't understand Wyatt's need to help his uncle. So to by time he tells him Harper is fiancé. Now if they only can remember it is a fake engagement or maybe not.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.

Harper and Wyatt have been best friends for as long as they have known each other. During all these years, Wyatt has been in love with Harper. But she had her head in her books and was totally oblivious. When she started seeing Wyatt for more as a friend, she concealed it, thinking he had no interest in her. So the walk on eggshell begins…
This is a sweet story about love overcoming all hurdles. After the first misunderstandings were cleared, Harper and Wyatt realized they did not want to live without each other, that nothing was worth a lifetime of separation. Interestingly, what Wyatt’s friends thought about Harper gave insight to how they saw Wyatt themselves. None of them would have picked Harper for Wyatt, seeing that she was neither athletic nor an adventurer. Even though they might not have been after his money, they definitely saw him through his accomplishments, contrary to Harper who understood him, the person behind the façade.
Have fun getting to know Wyatt and Harper as they finally find the courage to admit their feelings towards each other.

💕Will Wyatt and Harper's summer on the farm end in goodbyes or turn into a new start for their relationship?😕
July 11, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this sweet, clean romance between best friends Wyatt and Harper. He's a🏂 daredevil, she's into routine and security, but they've emotionally supported each other for years and suddenly realize that their paths may diverge permanently. But is that really something they can live with In order to pursue their individual dreams? Will they remain friends or take a chance at romance, no matter how brief? Their choices remain a question right until the end.

The story is well-written and provides more than a few hair raising moments. A bit of sport, foreign travel and working together on farm chores and the suspense of not knowing if or when deeper feelings will force them to find a solution to their imminent separation. A nice, breezy summer read.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

He is an adrenaline junkie that loves extreme sports. She is an introvert homebody that is seeking tenure as a professor of nutrition. They met as children when his uncle (the man that raised him) and her mother married. They have been best friends for forever and neither is aware of their attraction to each other.

When Wyatt’s uncle Fink is hospitalized in Arizona, he is talked into staying at the farm to help Harper plant for the fall harvest. A call from Wyatt’s father in Chile causes him to lie why he is staying on the farm and before he knows it, he says Harper is his fiancé.

This is a sweet romantic story at its best. Two people that have been best friends and are fighting their attraction. Neither wants to ruin the friendship, but both pining for one another. They have but one summer to experience love, break down barriers, and decide if opposites can find true happiness.

Safe. Secure. Stable. That's all she wanted no needed. Her job, the farm, her family and her best friend and everything is right in her world. Her best friend for the last ten years, Wyatt always made her do things out of her comfort zone, which usually ended with her being injured but it's what friends are for right. What happens when best friends find out they really want to be more but are afraid to mess things up? Well this is their story and in true Jessie style these two find out. Through the rough and tough and everything in between their fake relationship gives them the chance to find out. When obstacles try to pull them apart Wyatt takes things in his own hands to insure he gets not only his best friend but his partner for life because after everything they have gone through they have found they are always better together.

Friends since they were children, Wyatt has loved Harper for the 10 years he has known her. Harper is just coming to realize the feelings she has for Wyatt involves more than friendship. The problem is they each are afraid to tell the other. When circumstances throw them together for the whole summer they have trouble keeping the line between friendship and love drawn. Each of them are willing to sacrifice their own happiness so that the other will be free to live the life they chose.
Will they be able to find their way to each other as family problems arise? You won't regret purchasing this book to find out. I'm still smiling.

Awesome story; even though, some characters are “vertically challenged.”
Well, how can you not want to read it…“Pulses, like electric shocks, ripped through him. Her breath hit his face and her hand slid around to hold the back of his head. Her other hand slid around his waist, slipping under his shirt, shocking his bare skin. His breath came out in a rush, and he lowered his head. All thoughts of anything except taking her lips with his evaporated out of his mind. He’d dreamed of this for so long. He’d almost lost her today. But she was alive, safe and warm in his arms. Her body pressed to his. Two hearts. One heartbeat. “Harper, I…” He didn’t finish the whispered plea, unsure if he had meant to ask permission, apologize, or maybe even give her the chance to back away.”

I tend to really love the "I fell for my best friend" stories. However, I was relieved that this book didn't contain the unnecessary third-part drama. It was lighthearted and fun and I truly enjoyed seeing both Harper and Wyatt overcome their fear of losing each others friendship in order to strive for something more. Of course the (not so) little push in that direction made it all the more fun and sweet. After all, seeing that Harper and Wyatt agree to go through with the sham and come out as a strong couple on the other end was so worth it!
Great read!

One of the best friends to lovers romances I've read!

Harper and Wyatt are such a fun, delightful couple! I love how well they know each other & the complementarity with which they fit together.

Their inability to see that they love each other is frustrating but also depicted fairly believably.

The story is frequently exciting and moves at a decent pace. Interestingly, the end was both what I had anticipated and not. I only wish that there had been an epilogue of their wedding or some point after so we could savor the happily-ever-after glow longer.

Clean romance level: passionate kisses

Ten years of studying to achieve the goals she wrote down after high school. They kept in touch, with him on one adventure after another, achieving his goal of world champion. With the call that her tenure maybe a possibility for her. This could be the last adventure, going into a cave to retrieve a heirloom. He was attractive, his voice always calmed her, attraction yes. She was the girl next door, the achiever, so anything more, he didn’t want to upset her plans, and goals,Wyatt and Harper a fake engagement maybe just what the couple needs to make it real.
Cute story, with plenty of laughs.

Best friends need love too!

Harper and Wyatt are best friends. Growing up with Harper's family after his mother's death, Wyatt is like a brother but he would like Harper to see him as a man. Wyatt is everything Harper is not; a thrill-seeker, extreme athlete, an adventurer and he has the opportunity to have all that but it won't include her. In contrast, Harper has lived her life in a risk-free quest for security. She now has the opportunity to fulfill her highest goal but it wouldn't include Wyatt. If there is any chance of a future together, someone's dream must die.

This is a sweet romance with likable characters. Anyone who likes a good love story will enjoy this book.

This lovely tale of Wyatt and Harper will keep you entertained with feelings galore from start to finish. As usual a madcap adventure with emotions all over the place as they decide if their relationship is the real deal OR do they need more time apart as they each pursue their lifetime goal? Brought together years ago by a family marriage will this special duo break out of their mold and find their own HEA? Another enjoyable read by this author that just makes you feel good.

Wyatt and Harper have been best friends for Christmas years, though their lives are completely opposite. How is full of adventure, while hers is full of fulfilling her checklist of goals. Forced into a fake engagement, I love seeing each of their sides of how life could be if they really were together. They learn how to sacrifice and that your accomplishments in life won’t matter if they are only to impress others. What really matters is being with and doing what makes you happy. Such a fun read with romance, laughter, and suspense.

So Good! Loved Harper and Wyatt's story. They were best friends for ten years. Now, Wyatt was moving to Chile to work for his Dad, but before he goes, he must help save his Uncle Fink's farm. Harper loves the farm and is in shock when she discovers if they don't get the pumpkins and corn planted now they will lose the farm. There's a whole lot more going on, but I'm not going to spoil anything. I stayed up two nights to read this book, it is that good. If you like clean, heartfelt books full of wonderful characters and love of family, you will enjoy 'Better Together '. I highly recommend! I received this book from the publisher. The thoughts and comments are my own.
