A SEAL and his war dog Shrek lead the fight to survive the Rage Virus
John Eric Carver and his Military War Dog partner, Shrek (meaning Ghost in Dutch), were retired from the SEAL team they had led through three deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. They lived now in southern California not far from a Boy Scout camp and Indian reservation. Jennifer Blevins was the director of the Schoepe Boy Scout Camp where Carver volunteered. Nicknamed “Lost Valley,” the three-thousand-acre facility was used by troops from all over the Southwest for weekend training and activities.
Harold Kinney, the camp’s ranger, was the only other full-time resident besides Jennifer on the three thousand acres. Kinney was a former Marine in his early forties and was responsible for making sure the camp’s physical assets were maintained and that supplies never ran low.
Captain James Louden, Marine pilot, retired, today driving a Falcon 2000LX, a French made luxury jet, delivering a passenger list from WHO to Chicago. One of the passengers was ill, occupying the restroom for most of the flight. He was still there when the Airbus landed at O'Hare and Captain Louden's copilot went aft to check on the sick passenger. Hearing an inhuman sounding scream from the back cabin, Louden peered through the flight deck peephole. He saw the sick passenger bent over his copilot and as he turned toward the flight deck, Louden saw an inhumanly contorted face covered in blood as the creature ran off the jet and disappeared into the terminal, leaving three bodies behind on the jet with their throats torn open. Thus began the end of the civilized world.
This tale from the Extinction Cycle world offers explanations about how the virus arrived and spread across the U.S. and the planet. I loved the characters and the plotline that Walt Browning has detailed for us, and the carefully crafted and excellently described action sequences are believably drawn to draw us into the action. I literally devoured each thrilling page as I was drawn deeper into the story with every sentence. Hard to put down, easy to fall deeper into the excitement, this side story of the EC world is an excellent edition to its genre. I had to read it twice to make sure I hadn't missed even a word of this thrilling tale of cooperation survival.
When starting the series and realizing it had Zombish things, said; "No don't like Zombies books"......Five days later...sure liked this one!!! Characters very well developed, hadn't been to California for 30 years but knew I was there during the books. First 3 books were amazing, 4th didn't start " right", jumped around, missed some of my new friends. Put it down for a night and started reading just to pass the time. It all fell together. They were all there, all my friends. These books have made me happy, sad, mad and indifferent. I LOVED THIS SERIES. Walt Browning is an amazing writer you can't help but love his work. Thank you!
This series was remarkable! It had every thing I needed in a book. War, killing, loving, respect and you didn't want it to end. I'm really bad at revealing key parts of a book. All I can say.. is your imagination and the scenes are surreal! You think you know what is going to happen next but you are proven wrong time after time. The only thing I don't understand is ...how was this not made into a movie? How many times have you thought the movie you picked would be a good one? How many times was it a dud? Too many right? I still think this should be a movie!!! Hey Mr. Browning ? Submit this to the movie gods would yo?
Shark (the war dog) and his master (Carver) steal the series. The author uses the technique of having the dog's thoughts part of the narrative, and it's a brilliant idea which gives to the dog's importance to the story. Sure, there's plenty of violence and the other parts you expect from an apocalyptic thriller, but it's really the story of a man and his dog (or a dog and his master).
I loved this series it kept me engrossed for the whole ride. I just couldn't put it down. The characters of Carver, Porky ,and many others come alive. You can almost feel yourself with them in battle with the angry variants. The monsters made by an army experiment that almost decimated the whole world. Strap on your boots and get ready for the fight of your life!
I picked up this 38-hour audiobook in a recent sale by Audible. It's a four book box set. I expected to delve into it slowly, but found myself listening to the entire set and wanting more. I don't typically like zombie books but I enjoy action/adventure/military books and this was outstanding for it's genre. Highly recommended. . . .
I read all 4 books.a little long but well-written. I wasn't particularly thrilled with all the battles but still had to read it all. I couldn't stop. I had to know. And thank you so much for Spectre.
I just read all 4 books, straight through. At first, I thought it was a little hokey getting Shrek's point of view, but the authors made it work. I don't recall an apocalypse story make me tear up like this one did.
If you like zombies, this book is for you! I liked how the author explains the transformation of the zombies and how they evolve as the story goes on. It's a must read.
Crazy monsters, not your ordinary zombies. The addition of the dog and his thoughts were an excellent additional hero that gave the story a unique edge that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Extinction Survival series was awesome. The series melds incredibly well. Carved and Shreck work great together throughout the book. The ending definitely leads into another book.
All four books in the series. Carver and his war dog Shrek watch the world as they know it explode. From nowhere zombies invade the USA. Carver and Shrek join others to save what’s left of their world
I loved this series because I'm a huge zombie fan. I cried at parts and laughed at parts and then cried some more, but happy tears were in there too! Good stuff!!
This series kept me captivated the entire time. The only part I didn’t enjoy was the jarring jump from the past to the future in the last book. Also wanted to hear more of Kyle’s and the narrators story. All in all though well done
Wow! I so enjoyed this book. A Navy seal and his war dog. Need I say more….such a wonderful set of books and it kept me interested from beginning to end. I always look for Walt Browning a wonderful writer and he never disappoints.
This was an excellent survival story. I was moved most by the relationship between dog and master. This is my first series where the dog shares his thoughts, and I thought it was a great addition. This series was full of action and suspense. Highly recommend.
Excellent series! Another book needs to be added so we can find out what happens.....how Spectre does, the reunion of Gary and his mom. Adding this author to my list of new ones.
Entertaining from start to finish. Love the dog personality and character development. Great close to series. Will definitely look for more from this author
I’ve always been a fan of SHTF stories, zombies not so much. This one makes a pretty good transition. I especially like the narrative from the dog’s viewpoint.
Starts out well, but I wanted more from the ending. Good apocalypse series. I listened on Audible and the narration was good as well. Plus Audible has the series as a bundle for one credit = BONUS
