My first 8th year fic, and I have to say I absolutely loved it! Honestly, this felt like a continuation of the original series, just told from Hermione's perspective – the writing felt very similar, the tone and content felt like YA and it had just the right mix of character and plot.
I love this one for so many reasons. First, it feels like the most true to the characters fic I've read to date, and the most believable - Draco without his cronies or any other Slytherins perfectly poised him for softening to Hermione, and OMG the depiction of Ron and Hermione's relationship, of seeing and understanding firsthand why it wouldn't work between them (we all knew it wouldn't, but it was so satisfying to see that play out in detail)! I liked the metaphor of healing the school and healing themselves from the trauma of the war. Most of all, I loved Hermione's evolving self-discovery as it pertained to her sexuality. Her ick (aka "the itch") for Ron felt so real to me, as did her whole journey of exploring her sexual side with Draco (which, admittedly, wasn't the best smut I've ever read, but the percentage and tone of it were perfectly proportioned).
I just can't get over how well-done this was. As a predominantly YA reader, this hit the spot. Also, as much as I love fics with Blaise and Theo, it was really nice to keep the main gang close (Ginny, Neville, Luna and co), rather than have to pretend to know and love the Slytherin characters, which I've found to be a super common trope with Dramione fics.
- 8th year
- F.U.C. (fixer-upper club), repairing the damage to Hogwarts
- getting the "itch" with Ron
- no other Slytherins
- authentic, repentant Draco (takes muggle studies)
- fleeting mention of Arthur Weasley becoming the new muggle studies teacher!!
