Hiring an assassin comes with a great deal of problems.
Strauth despises magic and all those who wield it. When his brother devises a plan to eradicate those responsible for their father’s death, Strauth is eager to join the cause. Then he receives his new assignment—guarding a witch while her family is on an errand for the king.
Nothing terrifies Feya more than using her powers, and now she's been left behind while her family searches for a dark sorcerer. To make matters worse, the lieutenant assigned as her guard clearly despises her.
When an assassin attempts to kill Feya, Strauth protects her, nearly losing his own life in the process. Escaping death changes hatred into something new, but the discovery of his brother’s hand in the scheme makes following his heart complicated. Can Strauth keep Feya from those who want her dead or will they both fall victim to the mysterious assailant?
Strauth hates magic and joins his older brother, Ivrin, to get rid of those who caused their father’s death. But he is assigned the job of guarding a witch while her family is searching for a dark sorcerer for the king. Feya hates using her powers. And she is being guarded by a man who hates her. When someone tries to kill her, Strauth must protect her. Then he finds his brother was involved in this attack. Will he continue to protect her? Has he changed his mind about magic? Has he changed his mind about Feya?
This is one of the nicest HEA I've read in a while, wonderfully written and a story of major preconceptions gone bust. I do enjoy Brooke's writing style, so fluid and well devised, it's easy to lose oneself in the story. Even thought it's book 2 in the series Children of Magic, it can easily be a standalone. There are some events from the prior book that filters through, but in such a way that everything makes sense. After the devastation caused by Morzaun, hatred of magic and magic users escalates. Strauth and his brother Ivrin want vengeance for the death of their father and vow to eliminate them all. After Aldeth makes an attempt for a pardon, his daughter Feya is held hostage by the king and who is appointed her jailor? None other than Strauth! This led to some beautiful moments where he tries to keep hold his hatred of magic users whilst forced to protect Feya. An assassination attempt and the unveiling of truths has poor Strauth reeling! He's a very believable character, easy to like and relate to. Feya, who is terrified of using her magic lest she loses control, had in fact, suppressed her magic, to the point that she cannot access it. I enjoyed how these two danced around one another, their bias leaning one way, their emotions another. I enjoyed the storyline as well as the storytelling, I loved how steadily the plot infolded, the way the characters grow throughout, their emotions raw and real. Another beautifully written book by Brooke, where there is action, scheming, betrayal and ultimately love, which leaves one with that content tingle from head to toe.
I thoughly enjoyed this Audible book and the story. The depth of the characters continues as the story progresses. The Narrator does a Great job with the characters voices and the entire storyline. Really looking forward to the next book in this Series.
