Raymond is one of life’s perpetual victims. Downtrodden. Bullied. Unable to rise above mediocrity. A nobody among nobodies.
Raymond’s London neighbourhood is a festering pit of evil, the unfortunate souls living there are little more than prisoners in their own homes. Thugs, rapists, murderers, all operating with near impunity against the innocents of the city. Drugs flow like water. Violence is rife. Disappearances are commonplace.
All that is about to change.
When a medical procedure goes horribly wrong, something slumbering awakens inside of Raymond. Something powerful. Something dangerous. Years of suffering are over.
It's been a while since I couldn't put down a story. But this had me gripped throughout. The tension and pace was relentless, laced with a complete sense of injustice, and everything within me was rooting for Raymond. Fantastic, distinctive characters, whether good and bad or inbetween. Really can't wait for the next installment!
A good read, although the beginning is a little depressing given how emotionally weak Raymond is portrayed. It serves to show us how crippling his life and the system he life under is, when things star to change for him and the story it becomes a powerful source of inspiration to keep going and find out how things develop for him. The ending I have to admit was somewhat sad, wish gives a lot of leeway for a continuation but not necessarily one.
Raymond is a nobody just trying to get by, do his job and live his crappy life yet he is bullied on the streets, by a low life thug in his building and by his boss at work. When a fearful Raymond is vaccinated against the flu and betrayed by his only friend, something inside of him breaks and he becomes powerful, dangerous and revenge will be oh so sweet.
This was a brutal story. An amazingly written, tragic, brutal story. But I honestly wish there was another book. Rays “ascension” was so bittersweet. The ending striking an absolutely brutal cord. I couldn’t put the book down. My heart bled for ray from beginning to end, as it was written so well and brutally in detail that it felt like I was living it.
