Vinny's organizing a surprise birthday party for his mate, Anita. It's not going well: his choice of venue is a bit misguided, Anita's not keen on leaving the house, and everyone else has their own stuff going on. Maybe a surprise party wasn't the best idea
A play about trying (but not really managing) to help, Stuff formed part of the 2019 National Theatre Connections Festival and was premiered by youth theatres across the UK. The play offers rich opportunities for a cast of young performers.
I've read every play Wells has published and enjoyed them all. I was skeptical of this one, since it's a play for young performers (his previous one in that vein - Drip - is my least liked of his works), but this is really a small gem. The characters are all well-drawn and the dialogue seems spot-on for that generation (though I DID have to Google a few of the more arcane expressions - mainly since they are UK-based). And it was nice to have two teenage boys discovering their sexuality without it being overly traumatizing nor cliched - although I would have liked to have seen more resolution there.
