... he's beaten Yaotome at a six-tile handicap, but can't beat her with four, so the answer remains "no time soon." Will he manage to do it before she graduates?

The answer still remains: no time soon. In the meanwhile, Christmas (year indeterminate), New Year’s, exams, and the dread spectre of Valentine’s Day all serve to inject their own brand of mayhem into our leads’ attempts to kick it up a notch.

A solid, if uninspiring, instalment of our shogi stalwarts, with neither of them taking the next little step towards coupledom, yet still managing to spend an awful lot of time together anyway.

It’s definitely a good volume, but it lacks the punch that some of the earlier ones had. I do like that the shogi challenge has become a contest that Yaotome sometimes loses, but not enough that Ayumu feels he can ask his senpai out. It also turns out that the handicap fuels a lot more competition in Yaotome than she previously had.

Most everything revolves around miscommunications and misunderstandings that serve to keep things from happening or just embarrass Yaotome to ribbons (the saga of poor Ayumu’s exam prep and the aftermath). This would be a lot less tolerable if these two weren’t so good together - I love the way Ayumu always goes the extra mile, especially when he messes up (ie, Christmas).

That all being said, my favourite moments this time actually resolve around Sakurako (of the 5-yen hypnosis and most impossible hair) and her would-be beau Takeru. His clever defence against her antics being completely effective and then completely ineffective when she uses even more devious antics is very well done. I love how they are basically mired in the same boat as Yaotome and Ayumu, but presented differently.

The only real problem is that there’s not a ton here that hasn’t yet been done, which is largely the same thing that Teasing Master Takagi-san boiled down to. I would still rather read this series, the dynamic here is much more enjoyable to me, but it’s fallen into a similar pattern.

And patterns aren’t inherently bad, but they don’t necessarily bring the spark that the earlier stories had, no matter how many adorable sweaters or blushes or unwitting lean-ins people manage to pull off.

3.5 stars - I don’t want to imply that this book isn’t great; in fact, I would say it is one of my coziest reads right now and I leapt right for it when I saw the new volume was out. It’s just been better in the past and that’s where I’ll be ranking it this time - average, but the good average.

I just love this series - ayumu and urushi continue to have the sweetest, silliest, most bashful moments together that I live for. this volume we see them go through winter break, new years, valentine’s day, and exam time. their relationship continues to develop slowly, but they learn more about each other, like when they stop at urushi’s old shogi haunt - one she shared with her grandfather before he passed. very very cute and heartfelt series!!

I ended up devouring the first 13 of this series over the course of a couple of weeks. I really enjoyed the relationship between the main characters. It's super sweet but adorable they just have this sweet romance. The art is beautiful and I found the whole came of shogi interesting. I will continue this series. I did a blanket review for all the books I've read so for. This is a high school romance that is slow burn so and I highly recommend.

I’m glad that there is a little bit of awareness from the protagonist about Ayumu’s affections- finally! 😅😅

This is such a fun little series. The characters are totes adorbs!

These two have it bad for each other, but, because of a mix of pride and embarrassment, neither has been able to be honest about their feelings. This Shogi game they play, it seems rather interesting. Well it certainly seems to be for these two! And that library committee, this two... they're in tye same boat when it comes to romance. Well, the girl is able to hug & hold onto the guy. He just seems completely oblivious. Or maybe it's a by-product of two much hypnotation?

Christmas, New Year's, and Valentine's Day. This volume flies through the three major holidays of winter straight into exam time. Meanwhile, Ayumu and Yaotome's not-quite-relationship hits a few random bumps, mostly of the cute and blushy embarrassment variety.

Then there's Takeru and Sakurako where I'm still trying to figure out if Sakurako actually even likes Takeru, or is just aware that he likes her. Either way, his reactions are hilarious.

This series has 17 volumes.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I love that we got to see how Urushi and Ayumu handle moments where they make each other more shy/bashful. It was also really interesting seeing the pair interact during 3 holidays in just a single manga volume. Something I liked the most about this volume though, is that we got to see a glimpse into Urushi; learning that she grew to love shogi through her grandpa which I thought was immensely adorable.

Strong illustration skills and excellent comedic timing make this volume stand out for me. I enjoyed every page, but more importantly, this work inspired me to excel with my own work.
