Sometimes being stood up is the best thing that can happen.
Two men sitting at a bar is supposed to be the setup for a joke, not the start of a perfect relationship. But when the confident Ryker and the curious Corey find themselves with more in common than just being stood up, sparks fly.
When a few too many umbrella drinks loosen Corey’s lips, his fascinating new friend is more than happy to answer all his questions and to help him take the first steps to understanding why Daddies are the best thing a shy sub could ever want.
Author’s Note: An Umbrella Drink Kind of Night was originally included in the Dirty Daddies 2021 Anniversary Anthology. No material changes were made to the story.
Most of the time, when we say “it’s the book, not me,” I think we’re simply trying to tell ourselves that a book is actually good but maybe I’m the problem. I hardly ever say it’s the book and not me, because, for me, it WAS the book.
However, I can say that this is a case of it’s not the book, it’s me, because I have officially concluded the age-play trope is not for me. I enjoy a Daddy kink book once in a while. Sure, too much becomes overwhelming for me, but I love a Daddy/boy dynamic. On the other hand, Daddy/lb + age-play isn’t for me. This is my second time giving this trope a chance, because I do believe sometimes we start off on the wrong foot, or maybe I didn’t get to judge it properly because the first age-play trope I ever read, I technically DNF’d. Now, though, I’ve decided I won’t be reading something with this trope ever again. I’ve discovered it makes me uncomfortable and I can’t take it seriously. However, those who enjoy age-play might be able to enjoy judge it much more fairly. There are some things that I can see how they are enjoyable for them.
That aside, this also had small but obvious grammar issues, lots of telling and no showing (almost none, honestly), and hardly any relationship development. There’s no angst, which is fine because the book doesn’t aim to be, so I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone looking for drama or relationship angst. The majority of the relationship feels very superficial, the dialogue doesn’t work in my favor at all, and there are hardly any moments between these two outside their role-playing and bedroom. I’m also not big on BDSM and it’s still something I’m learning about. There are three authors I “trust” if I’m ever wanting to read more BDSM-type MM.
A charming story of two men who have searched, but finally find their "one." Two men were sitting at a bar.... both have been stood up... Sweet, blonde, Corey is stood up, so he's been having some drinks with cute umbrellas. He's pretty tipsy. Ryker, a Daddy/Dom, is at the bar, too, when they are talking and finding out a bit about what the other likes. Corey is adorable, and Daddy Ryker makes sure he's having fun and gets home safely.
Then they meet up again for some serious talks, discussions on what each expects in a relationship. It appears our Corey has had some bad Daddys. Ryker and Corey move slowly, and then jump into their fun. Corey, a "little" is trying out what a true Daddy is like, and Ryker is perfect for him. He's getting all of the feels he's been craving. Ryker is getting what he needed, someone to take care of, cater to, and take charge of.
This novella gives us everything we want, like deep emotions, hot sexiness, satisfaction, and a sweet Daddy/boy, Dom/sub relationship, plus it works for both men, and we get our HEA. ENJOY !
This was book was ok for me up until the end. The I Love You's didn't work for me. As soon as he said it, I cringed. There was too much time spent on unnecessary things. One thing I've noticed with this author is when she gets into the kink, it's on overload. This book it was Daddy. Cory doesn't even know if he's submissive, but now all of a sudden he's using Daddy like it's nobody's business, lol.
I love a writing style that puts me in the mindset of whatever is happening much easier than normal. In the beginning of this book, one of the MCs is drunk as a skunk. I’m reading it feeling like maybe I’m drunk because the words don’t make sense. 😆
& then it’s just hysterical: ”What kind of sub do you think I would be? … Meatball maybe. A bit traditional a bit spicy. … If we were looking at traditional but not boring, then I’d be an Italian.” Like what!? I still can’t go over that. 😂
Then we have some anxious, nervous jitters as the first dating stage starts and I’m feeling all types of nervous for Corey myself.
Gahhhh and then we transition into where Corey lets himself have a night with Ryker where he can test out whether or not he can be a little, and Ryker can be his Daddy. THE REGRESSION!!!! So freaking beautiful. I was so in little space myself while reading that. I had the biggest freaking smile on my face. Absolutely loved watching that whole night unfold. Corey & Ryker are adorable together.
So anyway, I can’t remember how I even found this book. KU browsing maybe? But I’m glad I did. It was quite the surprise. Short, but sweet.
An Umbrella Drink Kind of Night is a prequel to this series, about a sub-awakening and a Daddy he meets at a bar when he gets stood up. This was short, sweet, and cute.
I liked this a lot more than A Pancakes Kind of Morning, I think both the length and the characters were just more agreeable to me. I loved how Corey was new to the kink world and Ryker didn't push him into it. Instead they talked a lot about it, and then committed to getting to know each other as people outside of the kink dynamic until later. It worked really well for them, and the age play in this was very well done.
So I read this out of order. I read the second book first because this one wasn't available since it was originally published as part of a different anthology. It obviously has recently become available as its own book and I really appreciated it. I can't decide if it made it better to have already known who these characters were or if I was confused in the second book and didn't quite realize it. I don't know either way I really like this book. The age play is extremely well done especially the conversations about consent and safe words etc. I do wish we got a little bit more of their getting to know you time but it's still a good book. It is a short story at just barely 100 pages. While it is a prequel to this series I don't think it's 100% necessary that you read it. However the whole series is about age play so if you don't like age play maybe don't read it.
Getting super annoyed with reviews that criticize a book for having age play or ABDL when it is noted in the summary or obvious. I even saw someone criticized that there's been too much mixing of age play and BDSM as if it isn't a part of BDSM. I'd like people to maybe do a little interneting (yes I'm aware that isn't a word) and education before criticizing a book that was clear in its intent.
When your world switches to a different universe, everything changes for the better.
When your words refuse to come and all you can think about is how to come NOW, you have learned your priorities.
When your friends and internet advisors all say to be careful, but go for it, what are you waiting for?
New experiences are built on old experiences. New opportunities come from old interests. Friends are built on friendship and love. But trust is a bit harder to share unless it is poking each other in a cuddle.
Where and how you meet do not really matter. Who you meet and greet does matter the most.
An umbrella I not needed if it is not raining outside, but an umbrella drink can sometimes stop the tears if you let it protect you.
I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it. It was just very…meh. Understandably short, there still wasn’t any development between the characters that really made me like either one of them. We skip the whole month of dating that would normally endear us to the characters. Ultimately, I was glad it didn’t take me that long to read.
This was a really sweet Daddy/boy story. Corey hasn't really given any thought to being a submissive, but a chance encounter with Ryker at a bar and now it's all he can think about. Corey is a bit of a worrier but Daddy Ryker knows just how to help his sweet boy face his worries head on. A quick read that was perfectly adorable!
I wanted to love it but towards the end I struggled finishing it. It lacked depth it started out great withe the uncertainty but it never got beyond that. Don't get me wrong it was a good book and if you like lite adbl this book is for you.
I feel like I'm missing what makes M.A. Innes previous books so good. I haven't been able to get into any of her recent books, I couldn't even finish some of them which is a shame as Daddy/Little is one of my favorite genres.
Corey is a cutie. The imaginary friend in the bar was so funny and him needing to find his paper umbrella. It's a good thing Ryker was the one to find him and help him out. I like that the staff at the bar kept tabs too.
If you need a short story that has a cute boy and his hot new daddy falling in love this would be perfect for you. Definitely a good book for a lunch break or to keep you occupied for a few.
Cute quick DD/lb read. Corey is drunk at a bar when the guy next to him rebuffs another guys advances. Corey makes a quiet comment about their discussion and Ryker decides this is a much more interesting conversation. Corey thinks Ryker is an imaginary Daddy and Ryker plays along so he can make sure Corey makes it home in one piece.
The next morning, having found Ryker’s note and contact information in his phone, Corey calls him. They begin see each other but as Corey and Ryker not little boy and Daddy. They agree to get to know each other for a month before they possibly introduce age play into their relationship.
It’s a cute story and ends in HFN. Story has baths, sensual spanking, light flogging, padded underwear (no diapers), and mentions of bottles, orgasm denial, and c*ck warming.
***** POV… multi first person
Standalone or series … book 1 in series CAN be read as standalone
Corey is a Little who was stood up (again) and is sat at a bar getting drunk on umbrella drinks. Sat next to him is Daddy Riker who answers all his questions about why a Daddy is the best thing that a shy sub could ever want.
I really enjoyed this story with the drunk little, the strong and stable Daddy and the way that their relationship developed and built over time. It was easy to imagine how everything was and see that they were developing a deep and lasting relationship. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is a short MM story containing a BDSM DDLB relationship.
Cute and quick read, but I didn’t care for the way the relationship between these two is depicted. I have a healthy appreciation for Daddy kink and Littles, but the way a Daddy is described makes it seem like Daddy’s only enjoy age play which isn’t the case at all! There are other things that irritated me but they are more nitpicky than anything.
If you like the blurb and don’t care how a Daddy is depicted, you may like this book.
I have been wanting to read this series for a while and I’m glad that I finally had time. I just got through reading a very dark book and was needing something sweet and this book was very sweet. Corey while he is drunk in the beginning of the story made me giggle and sigh. He is so cute. Ryker is a perfect Daddy for him. Low angst, med heat and a totally sweet story. I can’t wait to read the next one.
This is such a cute and sweet book! Corey and Ryker meet at a bar after they each have been stood up, and hit it off despite Corey’s drunken state. There is a lot of exploration and time spent getting to know each other, and I loved how there was no rush as they fell in love!;
Drinks with little umbrellas and talking to an imaginary friend may not be the best way to meet someone but it’s a start, right? Have fun getting to know Daddy Ryker and Little/Sub Corey better! After all, the best relationships allow each other to be comfortable being themselves!!!
Corey and Ryker's story was sweet. A Daddy meets his Boy who doesn't know that he's a boy or a submissive. Not anything ground breaking. But it was a solid storyline. A nice introduction to a new series.
I read this while it was in the Dirty Daddies 2021 Anniversary Anthology. Corey is a sweet little who has had one too many dates not show up. I loved the dynamic between Corey and the daddy who can't help but fall in love with the shy, sweet sub.
An Umbrella Drink Kind of Night by MA Innes – How cute are these two? If you are going to be stood up on a date, I think you deserve to be rescued by a hunk with a hero complex and paper umbrellas! Happy Reading!
