This is one of the more unique and hilarious romances I've read. Any story that begins with the hero pointing a gun at the heroine, only to surprise her with a flower and a proposal is setting up for something out of the ordinary.
Riko Kunimi has superhuman abilities that are just far enough above average to wow me, and yet just mild enough to keep her from comic book hero status. Part of what makes her real is her desire to hide these abilities so that she can live a normal life. She doesn't want to be the outsider.
Naturally, that's exactly what she is in this story after a rich guy named Ran falls in love with her, literally, at first sight.
Everything about this manga is over-the-top, from the hilarious jerk who happens to be our hero to the constant action. There's precious few moments when a person can relax or, heck, just breathe. But what makes the romance convincing is that Ran truly accepts Riko for who she is. Not just that, he loves her for it. By the end of the volume, he doesn't seem as jerk-like as before.
We'll see if that continues into the next volume.
Note: there's a side story called The Need for Artificial Respiration that tackles a painful subject with a surprisingly light touch. It has a very different tone from Flower in a Storm. It's not a comedy at all. But it's sweet and I thought it had a good ending.
I have to say while this manga is titled Flower in a Storm here on Goodreads, I was not able to find it under that name elsewhere. It just happens though that through all the mangas I've read that I've picked up a few words. Like flower = hana, which lead to the name I found this under. Hana ni Arashi
What the summery here doesn't tell you is the Riko has an unordinary ability of being super flexible and strong. As such and due to an incident that I won't spoil, Riko strives for an ordinary life as an ordinary girl. Tachibana Ran has his own kind of unordinary himself. This obviously doesn't help his case in trying to get Riko to marry him.
Unfortunately the characters here fell flat for me. Honestly I'm rounding it up to 3 stars. The characters had great potential but they weren't developed enough. Also despite the action packed scenarios and events that kept happening, really the only thing happening, it was 'ordinary'. Not really a lot/any plot in it.
I kept thinking how it's like Takane & Hana meets Shuriken and Pleats, but with no age gap and no ninjas. It's truly something I think you have to take the story as is and just have fun without thinking about. (There are some things I don't think were believable such as riding on a motorcycle but standing up and facing backwards. ;P) Ran is truly the star of this manga and such a hoot in his antics that I couldn't help but keep turning the pages with a smile!
I think Riko was a fun character because she's truly anything but ordinary. (Sorry Riko!) She LOOKS ordinary, but I love how she actually has super human-like abilities and how that affects the plot. She definitely isn't a damsel in distress and while Ran doesn't necessarily always respect her "no," I do agree with Riko that I'm glad he's never once made fun of her wanting to be "normal."
This was a really enjoyable read and definitely enjoyed all the characters (especially Redhead)! I can definitely see myself picking this up simply because it's fast pace, has a nice "romance," and just an interesting story. Plus, the art is great! I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next!
(I usually don't read the short stories included, but I really enjoyed the one that was included!)
This was cute and a little chaotic. Our main character is held at gunpoint in her school, but then the gunman tells her that she's going to be his wife. A chase/contest ensues. If she's not caught by him when the clock strikes a certain time, he'll give up. Of course it's not that simple. He's the richest, most powerful 17 year old in Japan, and she has superpowers. I enjoyed this manga. It's a bit chaotic. A bit all over the place. It's a manga that you read for the fun of it. The chapters do start off a little repetitive because our main girl (Riko) is always emphasizing that she's just a normal girl. She's not, because she has some kind of super agility thing going on. Our main guy (Ran) doesn't give up. He can be kind of funny. I liked the art style. I found some of the action scenes a little confusing to follow. I enjoyed this one and I'll read the second volume. It's only a two volume series, which I like.
If you can ignore the complete implausibility -- no, that word isn't strong enough, the ridiculosity -- of pretty much everything that happens, and also that these are all terrible ideas about how to approach a romance/any relationship, then this is a moderately fun and entertaining quick read. I like Riku as a character and was amused that what was love at first sight for one character completely forgettable to the other.
2021: I am surprised this one held up. I picked it up thinking that I will see if I want to keep it. It turns out that I do. Ran does grow on me. I do find him unpleasant in the beginning, but somehow he levels out to be out of touch but charming.
2011: I loved this one! Loved it! It was so sweet that it borded on giving out cavities. Don't get me wrong, I have read plenty rich boy loves "common" girl, stalks her, faces peril, and has feelings eventually returned. Having said that, I didn't feel as if I was reading the same old same old. But what I don't get is that Ran holds himself in a way that yukuza are often depicted. Why didn't anyone call him on it?
Anyway- this is one ball of fluff I wouldn't mind having again.

This manga is so over the top. It was both laugh-funny and annoyingly ridiculous at the same time. I am not sure which won. Ran has a chance look at Riko and falls instantly in love. A very obsessive love. He is both sweet, and demanding/creepy depending on how you look at it. More creepy at first but he does grow on you a bit. Riko wants an ordinary life yet often does over-the-top things making it impossible. Ran flashing his wealth does not help her case in her opinion. The student body president is probably my favorite character even though we don't even get his name.
Riko has super human strength. She's just trying to "fit in" but Japan's richest teen, Ran, bursts into her class to marry her.
As any girl would (hopefully do) Riko is pissed at this guy claiming her like an object. She ditches his butt only for him to announce that she has until the clock on her school tower strikes five the next day for him to give up on her.
Only for the clock to break and thus, her time limit is nonexistent.
It starts out fantastic. But the reactions of her classmates/family are so over the top because this is shojo-where nothing sane happens. Naturally, her entire class believes they're destined for each other and take Riko's pleas for help as a joke. It gets to a point where Riko is locked in a room with the creeper and her own friends tell her not to get too rowdy.
But it's fine bc now that they're confined Riko can spill her heart to Ran about her angst. A boy rejected her because she too strong and that made her a freak. (He didn't deserve you anyways) So now she has this trauma of being "different" and just wants to be normal.
When she gets out her class president even makes a joke about the fact that her chastity is still intact...
Where this manga starts to drown in quality is the fact that this was originally intended to be just a one shot-meaning just a chapter or two. Due to popularity in its magazine, it was given an extended run time. And it flounders.
As such this goes from badass girl to damsel in distress who needs rescuing every. Damn. Chapter.
She has all this strength but she doesn't utilize it. She gets drugged and almost raped but don't worry! Ran is here. *gags*
You can tell that this was written to literally just be "rich man rescues you fantasy" and that's fine. It's just that when the premise promises me that the girl is capable of protecting herself, has superpowers, and yet she's always getting kidnapped, what am I supposed to do?
I did like some scenes and this to be a cute time killer. I just was expecting something more "badass" than what I was promised. I have the next and last volume so I'll see what I think.
Overall, it would've been better had this remained a oneshot. The mangaka could've done so much with this but weakening her heroine, making a Doumyouji-wannabe, and making fun of the distress Riko's in for the first few chapters (only for everything to be constantly romanticized even though Ran wasn't a rapist) wasn't something I enjoyed.
There was a oneshot included at the end where a girl goes through an abortion and the male lead deals with his feelings for her and the rumors floating about her "reputation." I liked the realism.
*I own all the manga I read/review. I don't support scans.
The way our main guy is all heart-eyes when our leading lady does something superhuman is what sells this. As an unconventional femme I appreciate it. Also, the bonus story doesn't shame a character for having an abortion and that's just great.
So cute! Had more fun reading this than I thought I would, and the romance is so great! Even the extra story was pretty good. Looking forward to getting my fangirly hands on the second (and sadly last!) volume of this series :)
It was a really cute story with a nice storyline, but Riko didn't seem to use her superpowers that often, which sort of was a downfall. But overall, this story is cute and peppy. I definitely would recommend this to avid manga readers.
Riko Kunimi is a girl with superhuman strength, desperately trying to seem as normal as possible. She wants a normal high school experience but when Ran Tachibana, one of the richest and most powerful teenager in Japan, falls in love with her in first sight, Riko's life turns chaotic as he pursues her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I adored this book so much as a tween. It's a campy early 200os rom-com manga. Is it good? Probably not. But the art is pretty and I enjoyed reading it. It's completely unrealistic and stupid at times but it brought me job.
I'm a little sad that Takagi's hasn't done any more works? Unless she's using a different name. It's just weird how she only has three books because her art is just so pretty.
If you liked Ouran High School Host Club you'd like this series.
When was the last time I DNF'ed on a manga? Ummm maybe 2001? This book is the ACTUAL definition of a toxic relationship in every way. I solved the mystery of why there are only two books in this series: it sucks.
Exhibit A: He proposes to her while holding her at gunpoint!
this was… interesting. I appreciated the fast pace—each chapter had a very distinct plot point—but it was just too ridiculous to concentrate on the story.
I also can’t tell if I like the two main characters or not. they’re both very one-dimensional and I don’t find myself rooting for either of them or their relationship.
interested to see what happens in the next volume, especially because this is just a two volume series.
A little rough around the edges, jumping around a bunch. Still able to follow the general idea of what is going on. The main story is pretty cute with a dash of funny. Side story at the end of volume one was a huge rushed story and really shouldn't have been included as it also jumped around with and left a lot unresolved. Those pages could have gone towards the actual story for some transition scenes or even transition text block.
**Contains Spoilers** I have fanned several manga pages on instagram and I always save the ones that I see are completed. Among those, I found Hana ni Arashi. With the description provided, I was intrigued and wanted to know what kind of a different girl Riko was. Ran looks much more mature for his age, but he acts like a highschool boy smitten by Riko. I laughed so hard at Riko's efforts to appear as a normal girl, but a famous businessman's son comes barging into the classroom with a gun pointed at Riko that shoots off a flower and turns out into a proposal - GOD! That was hilarious!
The story is definitely VERY unique and I find myself liking both the characters!
2.5 stars. This story had some potential, but the characters were under developed and the story was all over the place. It felt like a one shot that was stretched out with filler. That being said, it was a harmless read to kill time with a couple laughs. There is a second volume that I’ll probably read just to see how it all wraps up.
I liked the bonus story, but I do not like a single character in the main story.
I like Riko's personality, but her trauma is stupid. Ran's whirlwind personality is kind of fun, but he's got them stalkery vibes with a side of Gonna Give That Girl The Stockholm Complex. Ran's rich childhood friend is an attempted rapist. The redhead assassin has a cool design but he has no personality and smells of filler. I like the class president, but he doesn't even have a name.
This is such a product of its time. Do not recommend.
"Flower in a Storm" is a sweet and silly romance manga! I would find myself laughing out loud a lot! It is extremely goofy and over the top, so this particular manga may not resonate with everyone. If you like action-packed, sweet, and super silly manga plots, this would be a perfect manga for you to read! The main characters are unique and are full of surprises!
The series is too short for the characters and plot to be well-defined. The "hero" refuses to take no for an answer and the "heroine," despite her supernatural strength, spends the whole series crying. I was hoping for a Hana Yori Dango series, but just spent the whole time thinking, "Really?!"
Review by K.M. : "A short manga series but a great love story. 2 volumes tell the story of an abnormal girl and an odd man who is the only one it seems that loves her just the way she is (besides her family.) She just wants to be normal but how can she with danger everywhere."
Fun story. A little bit over the top at times, but that's what makes it charming. For some reason Ran reminds me a little bit of Dao Ming Si from Meteor Garden. (Now is that because he actually reminds me of him, or because I'm obsessed with the show? Probably the latter)
Awful. I want to be able to read this, because the art is cute and it looks like the female lead is strong (?) but, yeesh, what can I do with such shallow characters?
