Hanatsukihime is totally awesome. Five stars all the way. The ending was definitely not disappointing. Lys was born with a heart that didn't beat. Her mother made a deal with a devil to save her. Lys will borrow the devil's heart for 16 years and then the devil will take it back. As such she has a beautiful flower mark on her chest "Hanatsuki" to show that she has a devil's heart. She along with Siva, her long time companion, they travel in search of the devil whose heart she has in hope of living longer.
Hanatsukihime Vol. 1 by Wataru Hibiki is a captivating and emotionally charged read that blends dark fantasy with heartwarming moments in a unique setting. From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked by the intriguing premise and the rich, atmospheric world Hibiki has created. Lys, the protagonist, is a girl born without a heartbeat, and the dark pact her mother made with a devil to save her life is the backbone of this captivating story. The devil’s heart that keeps Lys alive comes with a ticking clock, when she turns sixteen, it will be taken back, and her life will come to an end.
What makes this manga stand out is the relationship between Lys and Siva, her long-time companion. Their bond is one of the emotional highlights of the series, portrayed with depth and nuance. There’s a tenderness in their interactions that balances the darker elements of the plot. The way they support each other through their shared burdens, despite the looming threat of death, is one of the manga's most compelling aspects.
The setting deserves a special mention too. Hibiki weaves an Arabian Nights-inspired backdrop filled with mystery and enchantment. The aesthetic is simply beautiful, with deserts, mysterious princes, and spirits that evoke a sense of timeless fantasy. The art complements the setting perfectly, with delicate linework and stunning visuals that bring the world to life in ways that are both dreamlike and haunting.
The pacing of the story is well-crafted, though it’s only the first volume there’s enough intrigue and emotional payoff to keep you turning the pages. The action sequences, while not overwhelming, are engaging and dynamic, and the twists and turns in the plot kept me on my toes. Even though the series is short, only two volumes, there’s a satisfying depth to the story, and I appreciate that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s the kind of story where every moment feels earned.
As a fan of dark fantasy and character-driven stories, Hanatsukihime immediately became a favorite. It’s the kind of series that doesn’t rely solely on shock value or plot gimmicks but instead focuses on the emotional journey of its characters and the world they inhabit. If you enjoy tales of demons, contracts, and doomed love, then this manga is a must-read. I only wish it was more accessible in English, as it truly deserves a wider audience.
In short, Hanatsukihime Vol. 1 is a beautifully written and illustrated story that strikes a perfect balance between romance, adventure, and mystery. Hibiki has crafted a tale that lingers long after you’ve finished reading.
A really cute and fun manga. I like Lys and how spunky she is. She doesn't let many things drag her down. Siva is also an interesting character, but I could tell who he was really suppose to be pretty early on. The rest of the characters are interesting and help add to this already short story.
Cuma kayak oneshoot aja gituu.
Arrrghhhh... pokoknya aku kudu cari seri lanjutannya!!!
Eh...tapi...tapii.. tetap juga sih penasaran sama seri lanjutannyaaa.. :"/
This is a really nice Arabian fantasy story which circles around the question whom a heart belongs to and if it's worth making a pact with a demon to live longer. What do you do when you have only a limited time to live, how do you live your life? What happens if the demon no longer desires the contract to be fulfilled, because he has come to appreciate you, your emotions and doesn't want to take your heart back to eat it.
The whole series is finished in two volumes, so the mangaka can concentrate on the most important parts, even as she has a slightly episodic flair (it was her first serial). Lys and Shiva meet prejudice, other people like them - I'm quite impressed how the mangaka manages to keep Lys in the dark about Shiva's true nature. And in time we explore the love of mothers, their past, Shiva's growing appreciation of emotions and the fact that the date for the contract being due is getting nearer and nearer.
I would have given only three stars, because a lot of the story is very light, but the exploration of a similar situation between Malouf and Fatima lifts this volume into four star territory. And the story wouldn't have worked if we hadn't had the other stories to lead up to it.

Lys is a unique little girl. When she was born, her heart didn't beat. Her mother, wanting to give Lys at least a little bit of a life, summoned a high level devil and asked for his heart. The devil agreed but only if he got to eat her when she turned sixteen. As the years passed, she meets a young man named Siva one night at the desert. Together they travel as a performing group as Hanatsuki tries to find her devil in the hopes or renegotiating her fate. The story only gets more intense after they meet a ring spirit and an arrogant young prince. Will she find her devil and be allowed to live or will she become devil food?

I read this story when I was young at the request of a friend. I loved the storyline and the fact that their was no sex scenes but it is still a romance. It is just a feel good story that makes me smile. An added bonus is that the main character is not as ditzy as traditional manga women are and Siva isn't the traditional perverted man either.
Hanatsukihime was one of the earliest stories I´ve read when I started getting into reading manga and it´s been since then an all time favourite to me, so my review might be slightly biased ♡
If I have to categorize it, I would say it´s a dark Shoujo that consists of elements such as demons, contracts and impending death. The special bond between Lys (humangirl) and Siva (demon/devil) had it´s cute and heartwarming moments and I think this was portrayed very well. Also I´ve really enjoyed the Arabian setting the author chose for the story it was easthetically very pleasing.
Although the manga contained 2 volumes, the story had the needed action and twists so this was well excecuted in my opnion. It's a pity though that this gem hasn't been published in English yet. Sofar it's available in German and Italian, I did requested Seven seas Publisher too consider publishing it in English.
If you are into Shoujo I highly recommend you to give it a try ♡ since it's a short read
Series review: A small manga series about a young girl who was given a devil's heart at birth since hers wasn't beating but the devil will come in sixteen years and eat her heart This is her search for the devil who gave her his heart all those years ago. I'm glad the series wasn't long because there just wasn't enough things to sustain the story any longer than what was created. It was good little read.
An interesting concepts! In exchange for keeping her heart beating for sixteen years, Lys' heart has been switched with a devil's. Now attempting for find that devil before her time comes to an end, Lys has some adventures ahead of her.
It's a cute little story! Beautiful art, a little cliche, but it's got its heart in the right place. Love it!
Really enjoyed this. A girl is only alive because her mother borrowed the heart of a demon to keep her alive. She can use until she's 16 and then the demon gets to eat her to her his heart back. She's now 15 and is a traveling dancer (set in the ancient middle east) and travels with her companion Siva who may be more than he seems. Feel-good, romance, drama.
I really like the idea behind this story, it had such potential but it progressed to quickly doesn't have enough character development. I wasn't able to truly soak it in. Just as quickly i picked it up to read, i had put it down an finished. It was an enjoyable read but just falls short of that 3rd star i'd give a solid 2.5.
This manga was super short I got it done in one sitting. It was beautifully illustrated story about the Middle East. It had a pretty girl who is a dancer, and has a curse on her, and her protector....who happens to hide a secret from her. Apparently it is a re telling on a faerie tale but I don't know what tale that Is, but I would love to read it.
I love both Lys and Siva and also the little Thor (the genie of the ring), but the story was a bit too short. Anyway, I've read this manga a long time ago in english, and I'm so happy it was published in my country, and it also have a collector's box edition (and I bought that).
When a girl called Lys Lily is born, her heart stops beating so her mother makes a deal with the devil and she is offered life until the age of sixteen.... however she has this flower shaped mark on her chest called a Hanatsuki.....
Quick thoughts: Intriguing premise and some nice depth to the main characters, but it's very slow. Especially considering there's only two volumes. The final chapter here picks up quite a bit both in pace and plot, so it'll be interesting to see how volume 2 goes.
Honestly not as good as I remember. Still a good manga that should have been translated. If anything this is why I love fan scans because we can get stuff that we never would have even known about without them.
This was surprisingly good. A bit of a slow start, but it snowballed into something possitively thrilling. This one would be great to pick up again and read again!
I accidentally gave this book 3 stars but now I take it back, it's 1 star because it didn't keep me interested enough to finish reading the whole story.
