Disability Friendly: How to Move from Clueless to Inclusive
Create a true culture of inclusion
Although progress has been made around equality for many marginalized groups, people with disabilities are still massively underrepresented in organizations' Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts. People with disabilities make up at least 15% of the population, yet they are still too often overlooked. Many people with disabilities are highly motivated, create fantastic work, and add tremendous value to organizations.
Disability Friendly is a clarion call to businesses around the world to realize the opportunities presented by employing people with disabilities. It explains the potential of disabled employees, how to create a culture of inclusion, and, in the process, help people with disabilities become proud contributors.
In this book, you'll find:
Concrete strategies for redesigning work and its processes to embrace all contributing citizens Ways to incorporate disability supports into a business' diversity and inclusion practices and initiatives Methods for reducing the massive cost associated with government disability support payments and repurpose these as investments in the human potential of people with disabilities
Ideal for executives, managers, and other business leaders, Disability Friendly will also earn a place in the libraries of Diversity and Inclusion and Human Resources professionals seeking to make an impact on their company and on behalf of a marginalized group.

My only complaint as someone trying to learn how to be more inclusive...is how repetitive it can be. Sometimes the chapters sounded so similar, I thought I was having deja vu. Other than that, I do feel less ignorant and hope to continue learning how to be more inclusive in my personal and professional life.

Part one was a little repetitive but I did still learn a lot. I really enjoyed the rest of the book.

Society has made tremendous progress in including people with disabilities but unfortunately it has a long way to go. While the push has been to include all in business, government, and all areas especially through the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles as stated in this book “ 90% of organizations claim to prioritize diversity, the unfortunate reality is that only 4% consider disability in DEI initiatives.”
As this book focuses on business equality, it also tells many stories, information, and feelings about people with different abilities which is well expressed as the author himself has different abilities.

“One of the biggest keys to success in this process is having the important and necessary conversations, adopting and communicating the appropriate organizational policies, and implementing proper disability‐friendly practices. Your organization will be able to attract a larger pool of qualified talent with disabilities when your business processes are ready to welcome people with disabilities. Of course, that's a win for everyone!”

Great information that should be required reading for recruiters, procurement, and HR. I gave only 4 stars because of the writing style. I have heard John Kemp speak and he is great. However, there were many long, hard to parse sentences in this book reducing its readability. I think it could use a bit more editing to engage more people.

March 18, 2024A wealth of current information about how to create inclusive environments, with a focus on employment in larger companies. Living in a largely rural area, I would like more information on how to apply these same principles to smaller local businesses. Looking for additional resources.

I am not someone with a disability, so I do not know of the accuracy of the content. What I can say is that feel more informed with actionable ways in which I can be more inclusive in my thoughts, my language, and assumptions.

A must-read for anyone who is able-bodied to understand what it means to be truly inclusive for those who are disabled.
