It’s been a day since I’ve reread the older books in the KCPD series, but that’s okay since I can go back and add reviews and notes:)
I’m not a big fan of the older woman/younger man trope, but when it’s done right I’m all for it! Julie Miller did an excellent job with Shauna and Eli. They have a lot in common, great chemistry and that wonderful tension just added to the mix! Adding in all the other story elements made things that much better!
This is the 2nd book I read by Juile Miller. The storyline was really good. The beginning started off great with a lot of action. I felt sad for baby Jane doe & the killer got what they deserved. Shauna & Eli made a great team. This was better than the 1st book I read by this author.
This could have been one of those faultless great books where even a 5 🌟 rating would be a degrade. Undoubtedly, after 70% into the book, it just petered down to mediocrity.
The story is built on a real.life incident where an unidentified, decapitated body of a 1 yr old African American baby is found. Even though the police have a suspect in custody, the commissioner, Shauna (h) has been receiving anonymous threats asking the police force to arrest the right gu. In comes our hero (Eli Masterton) an IA officer and a lonely wolf/outcast of the police force. Instant sparks between the commissioner and detective fly.
I really liked this reversal of roles where the lady wasnot only in charge but also a cool 10 yrs older than him. Their chemistry and their responsibilities towards their families and their work is absolutely commendable.
The plots good but it needed a more complex development. We needed the Vivian's pov here, something that will give more depth to this plot. And this js why the book doesn't make the 5 stars. It's just a one dimensional.book. The entire scene between Eli and his sister who's in rehab, sounded so forced.
Overall, a decent read that doesn't reach the heights it ought to.
In this book, we finally find out about the Baby Jane Doe case that is referenced in previous books in the series. Eli Masterson, a detective in Internal Affairs, begins investigating and finds out that seemingly unrelated crimes are actually connected. It was interesting to see how that all played out. The romance aspect was a bit stilted at times, mostly because Shauna is a rule follower and also has some hang ups about their age difference. But once she makes a decision, the steamy scenes get fairly explicit. The descriptions of the Baby Jane Doe murder a little graphic too. Even with that, I feel this story lacked some of the detail of other books in the series. It felt almost as if it was written just to tie up the references to the case in the other books. And, even though the case is solved and explained, it still feels as though there are a lot of loose ends.
I recommend this if you're a fan of the series, otherwise it may not make a lot of sense trying to read it as a standalone.
The Commissioner of Police, Shauna Cartwright, reopens the case of Baby Jane Doe. She picks an Internal Affairs Detective, Eli Masterson, to find out who brutally murdered the one year old. Solving this baffling crime will require impressive skill to catch the killer. Strong characters, exciting storyline and an unexpected romance. Enjoy!
