easy read. stavis finds rare pieces of accounts on john brown and a chapter on his relationship with harriet tubman that i've never seen in any of tubman's histories. for example, did you know that tubman had a detailed vision of brown's face and how she would meet him before she ever did?
This work is accessible and highly readable -- I should think it would be a wonderful starting point for someone interested in the true story of John Brown. Stavis did his research, though he intentionally did not fill the work with footnotes or endnotes. This decision, made for readability, does not harm the work. Most everything quoted or referenced can be found fairly easily in other Brown materials. The images and illustrations are quite the addition to the work. All in all, I recommend Stavis's biography of Brown. It might not be the most in-depth, but it is certainly a benefit to the telling and retelling of the story of John Brown.
