A slick and action-packed yuri tale about two special agent women fighting supernatural horrors!
The year is 20XX. Tough but idealistic Koga has just joined the Tokyo branch of SHWD, the Special Hazardous Waste Disposal unit responsible for eradicating mysterious biological weapons that were left behind after the great war. Her mentor is Sawada, a woman with a powerful psyche who complements Koga's physical prowess. Something is sizzling between the two of them, and it's more than just a shared mission. Together, these two badass women must team up to confront horrors beyond their wildest nightmares.
SHWD (short for Special Hazardous Waste Disposal and pronounced like “should”) is a science fiction yuri manga set in a world infested by wandering bioweapons. All we know about these dynamis to begin with is that they are remnants of a previous war, and now they show up at random and wreak havoc by emitting an electromagnetic pulse that turns civilians mad with confusion and rage.
I'm disappointed but not surprised to see the top review making a jab at the fact the women in this are super buff- there's a million series about ripped men, god forbid one yuri series on earth be aimed at those who like exaggeratedly buff women.
It was refreshing for me, and so was getting another dark sci-fi yuri. The characters were pretty charming too and there was a lot of attention paid to the trauma of the situation. This is a 4.5 rounded up though, because it does have a 'character who looks like a child', which is not my favorite trope for a lot reasons. It bothers me a bit less than other series because the art style does not do cutesy. She just looked like a short adult.
The reasoning for having her there was...interesting, I'm not sure where they'll go with that, but it's original, though potentially weird? Anyway, I like what it's doing and I'm interested to see where this goes. I hope we continue to get a variety of yuri like this published over here.
Happened upon this at random @ my local library and thought "why the hell not". There's not a lot happening in this first volume, but it has gotten me curious enough to keep my eyes out for volume two.
I’m never more glad to not be straight than now 😃👍
Fast-paced action scenes intertwined with interesting character and plot developments, topped with an eye-catching art style that translate both movement and stillness very well. The pacing is a little bit weird, but honestly, any of these women could crush my head between their thighs and it wouldn’t matter a damn bit (especially Shino). Matter of fact, I’d thank them and invite them for round two. Looking forward to reading volume 2!
This is a better horror story than it is a yuri, although if you like your women to look like every joke ever made about Soviet bodybuilders, this book is for you. Thick barely begins to describe how over-the-top these proportions are (one of many instances where they decided that they CWLD but did not think through whether they SHWD).
Sawada is the veteran, Koga is new and twice her size. Koga seems to be pretty deferential, to the point that somebody calls her submissive. That somebody is the giant American gun nut woman from another branch, who Sawada doesn’t get along with.
She’s a LOT and the source of a lot of the volume’s problems. Her bravado is a lot, her past trauma is a lot, what appears to be her potential relationship with a 26-year-old in her division who happens to have a ‘condition’ that makes her look like a kid is really, really problematic.
The horror angle, about bio weapons that wreck people’s brains, is genuinely decent and used to excellent effect. The other parts, well, I guess this is the yuri version of a bromance (sismance?) and doesn’t feel especially interesting or well done. Real lack of chemistry makes it a bit of a bummer.
SHWD is an exciting action yuri series which features something most manga and comics typically do not feature, women with actual muscles. There is a good diversity in the range of muscles on women but the story has so far only 4 women in it and like 0 men who matter at all. It's very focused on the characters who matter to the story it's telling.
The story it's telling it a world where eldrich horrors that were made during "the war" appear driving people into killing frenzys and consuming them. Our heroes work at SHWD a private company that disposes of these monsters. The monsters are like ugly slime things they at present exist as a thing for the people to kill and aren't like "villains" they are the nature of the world stained by war.
Politically I am not sure if I am connecting to the plot or theme but I am not totally sure what the story is trying to say other then wouldn't it be hot if a slammer buff woman and a big buff woman kissed on the lips on the battle field and to that end, I agree, whole heartedly and I want to see it. I look forward to future volumes, I am not totally sure if the series will be for me but I am super glad I Picked this up and supported this very original piece of art.
I was really excited to read a dark Yuri, but this slowly turned into a story that made me uncomfortable. As I read on, I kind of started to get the impression that this was created by a very misogynistic woman or a guy that got dared to draw Yuri? I do NOT think there's anything un-hot about buff women, but I'll take my buff women looking much less like men (Leo... no thanks. That was just a man with long hair), with less weird tit jokes, acting less like complete butch assholes, and without a very young-looking character that seemed as though she was going to be involved in a future love storyline...? There are some mildly interesting plot lines forming here: the two ladies are fighting psychological beings left over from a war, the one lady might not be training the other lady right, there's some jealousy, etc. But even the way the two mains are "falling" for each other feels forced. It's just not my cup o' Jody. Won't be moving on to vol. 2.
In the world of manga and anime, seeing a busty woman isn’t anything new. This is the world of High School of the Dead and countless other series where the chests of the female characters are wildly disproportionate when it comes to fighting, sexy and comedic times. However these sort of characters are rare in the world of yuri or Girl’s Love, which is more often populated with young school girls who blush on command. So when wifey and I heard about this series being a supernatural thriller with buff women who can hold their own? It was an instant buy and we were not disappointed.
Very nice and easy read. The characters are likable and have nice enough chemistry to keep you reading. There’s not a lot happening here but that is mostly cause it’s the first volume, but already we’re introduced to some seeds of conflict between our main duo and Sawadas teammate Leone. I can’t wait to read more of it and see how the story develops.
And now with the semi-professional review done: Oh god, oh my god, I am so gay, buff women mmm yes yes love the characters so so much. It’s nice to have a yuri with some different body types than normal (I am also very gay👍)
DNF'd after 1st chapter. I did go into this manga knowing it wasn't a genre I really care for, but wanted to give it a try since club mod gave it high praise. I read the 1st chapter four different times but it just wasn't clicking. I kept feeling like I was missing something, it was to the point I read it digitally, an unofficial translated digital copy, and a physical copy from the store. I don't know if it was the transitions between scenes, the passage of time, or what... I also could care less for the two FMCs and their interactions with each other. It seemed very forced and artificial.
Gay shit yes please! I will say I did find the backstory and lore a bit confusing, but it wasn't the central premise and I got it in the end, I also found the crush to happen pretty quickly (not that I'm a slow-burn reader but it felt really quick). But other than that, it's good, we like some gay shit.
Probably one of my favorite manga narratives on trauma from multiple different trauma survivors of several personalities instead of one stereotypical "traumatized" personality, and has an epic fat-muscular protagonist who shows her trauma in unconventional ways. I also like the way the female characters show obvious desire for each other and the fact that they're grown women in the first place.
i love the idea of an all women main cast, but tbh the story was a little hard to follow and felt a bit rushed. i will keep reading the series in the hope it gets better, because the concept is incredibly interesting.
First off, huge fan of all the buff female characters! These women are strong and muscular and actually look like they would hold up in combat. There's not much plot and the fight scenes are hard to follow, but I'm so curious about the setting that I'm definitely going to read more.
I’m a simple dyke. I see buff sapphic women being gay n fighting horrific monsters and go feral. Loved this manga can’t wait to see more of Koga and Sawadas relationship ^v^ also I need more of Leo she’s great 💪🏽
Wow?! I did not expect to love this so much!! I already adore the characters and the story is incredibly cool. It's definitely a horror/post-apocalyptic type feel and I love it!
This one just did not grab me as much as I’d hoped it would. The scene transitions and dialogue are clunky, the characters uninteresting, the plot feels thin. I will not be continuing the series.
