In a society mired in godlessness and humanism, parents are given the high calling of raising children who will know the Truth, live the Truth, and take the Truth into the next generations. In Creation to Babel , today's Christian family will find a unique commentary on Genesis 1 - 11 to ensure the biblical foundation is established in their children’s hearts. Perfect for family devotions and Bible studies, Creation to Babel : Ken Ham, founder and CEO of Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter, partners with parents to hammer home the importance of understanding God’s infinite greatness compared to our human finite understanding. “We must let God’s Word speak to us, and not impose our beliefs on God’s Word.” - Ken Ham
Dr. Ken Ham is the president of Answers in Genesis USA and is a well-known speaker and author on the subject of Young-Earth Creationism. He received a bachelor degree in applied science (emphasis on environmental biology) from the Queensland Institute of Technology, and a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. He has also received two honorary doctorates: a Doctor of Divinity from Temple Baptist College, and a Doctor of Literature from Baptist Liberty University.
He was a director of Creation Science Foundation (CSF) in Australia, an organization which he jointly founded with John Mackay. In 1987 he moved to the United States, still maintaining his links with CSF.
From 1987 to 1993, Ham worked for the Institute for Creation Research, and in 1994 set up what in 1995 became Answers in Genesis (AiG), a creation ministry dedicated to "upholding the authority of the Bible from the very first verse."
In 2008 Ham was described by well known atheist and evolutionary biologist PZ Myers as a "Wackaloon" for carrying out a prayer session with members of the Pentagon. Ham responded regarding the validity of that prayer breakfastand that PZ Myers and other critics were intolerant of his position.
Read this book! It opens the first page of the Bible and builds the scriptural foundation for all history, humanity, and salvation. I really found the careful trusting exposition of Scripture encouraging. But it was made even more poignant by the use of logic and science facts to defend those verses against the common objections to their accuracy, inerrancy, precision, and accuracy. It’s not as technical as some of his other works, but it answers questions and points you in the right direction. But those facts never get in the way of understanding it as God’s Word and to be trusted in completely. Don’t skip the appendices. There he deals with some of the more speculative theories in more detail. I appreciate how he discusses his changing opinions. It would be an excellent Bible study for believers of all ages. Very young children might not grasp it all, but it will start them thinking about just how reliable the Bible is from the very first verse.
Another well done book by Ken Ham. His tone through the entirety of this “commentary” is warm, thoughtful & full of faith. There is information on almost every page that is interesting & helpful for a believer. There were times I was left wanting a little more from him & that may have been him not inserting his opinion into places where there is some mystery. I can live with that.
The book wasn’t a long read but I used it as I was teaching through Gen. 1-11 so I read it at that pace.
I would recommend this to those that are teaching or preaching the early chapters of Genesis. It could also be a help to family devotions. Or use it just as a personal good read.
All of the explanations and reasons for our world's wickedness, chaos, and death can be found in the first eleven chapters of Genesis. Ken Ham, of Answers in Genesis, wrote this easy to read and study text to help families or individuals understand the foundation for human corruption and sin. I know: sounds awful.
Actually, it is liberating because for every explanation of the curse there is God's promise of a Savior, Jesus Christ. It is essential for Christians to know both the curse and the promise, to explain why we live in such a sinful, broken world; but also it is imperative that we know God's promise to redeem us, which is the hope that is within us.
I think Ham did a masterful job laying out the truth, broken up into easy to follow and chronological topics. He used Scripture from Genesis 1-11, to explain Creation Week, the origin of sin, Cain's murder of Abel, the genealogies of Adam's descendants to Noah, the worldwide Flood and its effects on the earth and climate, God's covenant with Noah, the descendants of Noah's sons, and finally the Tower of Babel, the dispersion of people groups, and the beginning of the diversity of language, cultures, and people. And each event points us back to the need for a Savior.
In addition, there is a tribute to godly parents who lay a foundation for belief, shaping a biblical worldview in their children. There are also several appendices for supporting historical and scientific claims and evidences. Ham answered numerous common questions, confusing arguments, and misconceptions throughout the text about Creation and foundation of our world.
It is truly an interesting book of study, easy enough to read aloud to older children. Ham called this a "commentary" on "apologetics," a lesson in "how to think foundationally to know what we believe as Christians and why, and how to develop a truly Christian worldview." Furthermore, Ham said "there is also a devotional aspect throughout as we gain understanding of who God is, what He has done for us, and thus why we should thank and praise Him."
I was fortunate to be able to review Creation to Babel as part of the Ken Ham Morning Basket from Masterbooks. This morning basket contains the books Creation to Babel and Will They Stand both authored by Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis. I was given these books for free in return for my honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The reading schedule for the books is generously offered for free download through the Masterbooks website. The study for the books is broken down in 4 9-week quarters (36 weeks of total study). Each week starts with the parent reading approximately 10 pages of Will They Stand as a personal study. After the completion of each chapter, there are journal prompts, available at then end of the reading schedule document, to encourage deeper internal reflection on the information read. The remaining 4 days of the week are for family reading of Creation to Babel. Each day has the parent reading about 1-2 pages aloud to the family, leaving plenty of time for guided discussion by the parent, answering questions, or other parts of the family morning basket.
Creation to Babel is a straight forward book that takes the reader verse by verse through the first eleven books of Genesis. Ken Ham breaks down each verse with fantastic explanation of the information that can be extracted. He inserts enough historical and linguistic context to the verses to illustrate why each verse can, and should be, interpreted as he suggests. He presents Genesis as the foundation of the Bible and that proper interpretation of it will lead to proper interpretation of the rest of the Bible, much as a proper foundation of a house is imperative to its ability to stand. This book is engaging, informative, and practical. While the content is written in a conversational manner, many of the topics discussed can be difficult to adequately explain to younger children. I would recommend this to be utilized for older elementary through high school aged children for this reason. Younger children will need more explanation and have more questions, while older children may need to utilize the content as a jumping off point for further personal research.
I read this book as part of the morning basket, but it can be read as a stand alone book about Genesis and the importance of understanding and evaluating it as the foundation for the rest of the Bible. This book will be become and integral part of our homeschool curriculum next year, as we tackle the Creation and the Old Testament.
The main take away from this book is the question - is Genesis true? And if it is true, then it absolutely impacts the rest of our worldview.
We cannot pick and choose from the Bible. Either 100% true or it isn't. We can't have Jesus and have evolution.
I understand people who don't believe in the Bible will be quick to discredit this book by Ken Ham, but to the Christian - have compromise on the Bible? It doesn't bring anything positive to the table.
I strongly urge everyone to read this book by Ken Ham.
From the founder and CEO of Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter come a comprehensive review of Genesis chapters 1-11 that encompasses what he has learned and espoused over the years in regard to interpreting the Bible in these first 11 chapters. I come from the standpoint of recently hearing in person Ken Ham speak for the first time along with our visit to the Ark Encounter. Boy, I wish I would have had this information back in the early 80's when I first started teaching. I also wish I would have been able to witness back in the day to my high school teacher how erroneous and false were the teachings of Darwin and evolution. What important topics that we constantly deal with today and continue to fight in our public-school education let alone the higher educational models and elites that are way out in left field so-to-speak. He gives total credit to his Mum and Dad that exhibited in their lives a great trust and reverence of God's Word. This particular work could be used by Christian families and educators trying to find answers to today's highly charged issues including gender, gay "marriage", abortion and racism, etc. I would encourage anyone to check out his resources online, go visit the Ark Encounter and Creation Musem and see if you can find for yourself the answers to these tough questions being asked today.
A very thoughtful and thorough book going through Genesis 1-11. Ken Ham has synthesised and summarised the best of scientific understanding whose foundation is the authority of the Word of God. Anyone wanting a good overview of the science of Genesis 1-11 will benefit from this book. And Ken Ham has written it at a level that will work for families. I think families will find it of great benefit to read and discuss this book with their children.
This book gives a Biblical and scientific account of Genesis 1-11. It answered a lot of questions I've had since I began reading God's word and was hard to put down. I found myself having to limit how much I read each day to make sure I didn't just sit and binge read it, neglecting my other responsibilities.
Designed as a commentary for families, Ham runs through the first eleven chapters of Genesis with a scientific mind. As a "young-earth" creationist, he describes the various theories, critically, and provides apologetic and biblical explanations. Since this was intended for family learning, it was very engaging and easy to follow.
I read this with my boys in morning time and it was a phenomenal book. I was delighted that it presented the information that I try to teach them in a straightforward, easy to digest manner, working through each section of Genesis and coordinating all ideas directly with Scripture. There were even a few things I learned, and it definitely aided in my ability to defend and explain what I believe.
I was happy to find those. Many events in Genesis I interpreted incorrectly. When doing my own bible study, It was revealed. You cannot go wrong with this book.
Wonderful resource. Studied with my son over the past 7 months. It's probably not suitable for young children (under 8yo or so) as it's still quite long and detailed. But as my son was wanting to understand Creation in light of evolution, it was great to just read the Bible together and understand things from the source. He has been greatly encouraged, and we both learned a lot!
Amazing book of creation defense and explanation. Tracing the lineage of Noah's sons was very interesting. I read this in preparation for the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter.
This is a good book for thinking through the first 11 chapters of Genesis. We read a chapter each day as a family after dinner. It certainly spurred some good discussions.
