So the basic story is Jenny loves Chance; Chance loves Jenny, but has a shady background and doesn't think he deserves her, so he pushes her away; Chance has an accident and experiences amnesia - he doesn't remember Jenny, but he can feel that he loves her; Chance goes to investigate his history and discover whether or not he'll ever be able to come to Jenny with a clean slate.
Not bad. I like the idea, haven't really come across this twist with the "hero-with-anmesia" trope. So I really enjoyed it. No complaints about the characters or TSTL moments. There was a minor TSTL moment for Jenny, but I figure it was one of those "act on instinct, not on intelligence" things that ranchers probably have to deal with constantly.
However, couldn't you have just requested a background check? Gone to the town's police and gotten an idea for whether or not you were a bad guy? Wandering around a strange town hoping to remember something seems like a silly idea. Could have saved yourself a whole lot of trouble.
I know this is a slightly older book, but I know background checks are not a recent development. So yeah, half this story wouldn't have been necessary.
But I still liked it, even if I thought it could all be avoided with a few phone calls. But really, how many books would barely be three chapters long if characters took the easy way out?
Chance McCall - I fell in love with him after that very first scene of him and little Jenny (and the cute bandages!). I was dying right along side him and Jenny every time he turned her love away. It was heartbreaking but the HEA was so worth it.
This is about a broken hero who finally decides to uncover and face his past, in order to finally have a chance at a bright future with the girl who's won his heart and tamed his troubled soul.
Jenny puts up with a lot of heartache and tears to get her man, but I loved that she never gave up on him. She knew him so well, and accepted that he needed to come back to her on his own. She gave her love so selflessly and wholeheartedly that when the L-O-V-E words were finally exchanged between them, I was ecstatic and over the moon.
They have some really hot chemistry and the built up to the consummation of their love is intense.
I loved it from start to finish. Only complaint (and this is all me) I didn't really enjoy the whole (long!) section about Chance and Victoria. I didn't care for their past history and since I was already 100% Team Jenny, this was icky and annoying (I don't want to read the hero falling in love with another person, NOT The heroine). I wanted to get back to Chance pining/loving Jenny and Jenny fighting and winning the love of her cowboy. But it all works out in the end so enough ranting . . . aside from that, I loved everything about this couple and their road to their HEA.
This is by far one of her best. The female and male protagonists are believable and the discussions of police procedures and other important details seem to be correct. I can tell that she did her homework and investigated a lot before writing these. The love scenes are quick and don’t take up most of the book like some others. There are times that I really do like good love scenes, but when the book is supposed to be a mystery I prefer that they not spend too much time on the love scenes. Just my opinion, but I’m sure that others will agree with me that when you open a book to Enjoy a mystery that that’s what you wanna get. It has a very surprising twist at the end that is unexpected.
A good book that seemed a bit slow and repetitive at first but once the action got started it really took off and I was rather surprised at some of the past secrets. Hired hand Chance moves to foreman over the years and owners daughter Jenny has always been his shadow.
As always Ms Sala books keep you guessing and you always know there’s a happy ending. Jenny had loved Chance her whole life. They had there ups and downs and there were a lot of surprise near the end . But they did have their happy ever after.
The book was pretty good, though it weirded me out when the sexual tension started literally as soon as she turned 16 after he practically raised her in place of her father. But after putting that out of my brain, the rest of the storyline was great. Enjoyed the amnesia plot and finally discovering the secrets that Chance McCall was hiding.
If you are in the mood for angst - this suits the bill nicely. Poor Chance has been through a pretty lousy childhood and it takes a long long time to find out what exactly happened and then how to resolve the remaining issues. The flashback narration serves to keep the reader is suspense and worked very well. Chance is a fantastic, super likable hero. Ifdidn't come off as sullen and secretive at times he would be too perfect. His true love, Jenny, is not perfect either but her whininess and, in my opinion, kind of childish selfish love for Cance is more irritating. Fortunately she grows up (by riding a widing horse almost to death - not sure of the logic there) and winds up being a bearable bride for the adorable, heroic Cance.
Good read, emotional. He was a wounded teenager that appeared at a ranch for work. She was the rancher's only child. He is hired and she takes to him like a duck to water. As her father neglects her she continuously hangs around the ranch hand for support and care. As the years go by her love grows until her 16th birthday when he realises she is fast developing into a woman and his feelings are also growing. When a tragic accident robs him of his memory he leaves the ranch in search of his past. She tries to help and both declare their love for each other. She leaves him knowing he needs to find things out for himself and come to terms with his past. HEA ending.
I found the book shocking at times and it's definitely not to my tastes but honestly I don't think it was that bad. The amnesia plot was interesting for the most part and I didn't hate the characters even when I seriously questioned their decisions. I don't think I'll run out and buy a pile of Sala's melodramatic incestuous cowboy romances but if any of that sounds good to you then this'll totally do it for you.
What does it feel like to not remember or plain not know.
It's an empty feeling, I can tell you that. Not really belonging to anyone is a feeling one should never have to go through. When I was 73, I found out that I was just like my birth brother only he had passed away 10 years prior to that knowledge. But at least there had been someone that I resembled , I was finally a real person not just a nonentity. A very good story and well written.
2.5* I liked it, but it got too saccharine for me. The writing was okay but not great, and the book seemed dated. Sala did have an interesting twist on the amnesia plot, which I liked. Plus I was interested enough to read it through quickly.
I usually don't like stories with the amnesia theme however I loved Jennifer and Chance. At times I became exhausted with the plot but I really enjoyed this book. I don't really know if I should give this book a 3.5 or a 5 so I'll average that up to 4 stars.
I thought the premise was a little hard to believe. The heroine was not as credible as the hero and lacked a back bone imo. The hero was a little bit too good. What saved it was the mystery of the hero's background and I was surprised by the outcome.
i really enjoy the Characters that Sharon Sala creates...I have not read anything yet that she has written that I did not enjoy. Great storyline..a bit spicy for me in a few places but i so loved the story! Chance McCall is a great read!
This is one of the best love stories I have ever read. Chance's life story tugs at your heart strings. Great western setting, wonderful characters- would highly recommend.
Still really liked this book during my re-read but the h kinda irked me this time with some of her choices and how she acted, especially the ending. I kinda chalk it up to her being younger. 4.5 stars rounded up
I had read this book a long time ago, it's still very good and Sharon Sala has the knack of writing about character s that make you smile and tug at the heart strings.
