Jessica Cage is an author I have fallen in love with. I love her writing style. She has a way of making you feel you are right there with her characters in her book.
Syrinada wakes to find herself strapped to a bed after being abducted off the street and realizes her captor in the next room. Instead of giving up, she discovers, she has powers she didn't know before.
Malachi has been a friend of Sy's for a long time and he seems to know more about her and her new powers then he is willing to admit. When he see's that she is tapping into this unknown power, he steps in. He is also covering up things about himself that she doesn't know and now may be the time to come clean.
What has he been hiding from her?
This book was super excited to read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

March 9, 2022DNF'd at 57% (2/16/2022) I want to start this off with I really wanted and expected to love this book. Strong female & male mer-people/ sirens and witches and all that jazz is right up my alley. Anyone who knows me know it takes very little for me to enjoy a book, but this one just wasn't it for me. I'm not rating this book, as I tend not to if I didn't complete the book, but if I would the max it would get is a 2 star.
I know this was made in 2014 and the TW thing hadn't been around but the SA in the first chapter was jarring and not the best start to a book for 2 reasons. 1 - I have no idea what the MC was like prior to the SA. This could have helped me later on in order to know if certain behaviors were because of the trauma, her siren, or that's just who she was. I have no idea how to judge character development if i don't know who she was before the trauma; especially when everyone else she "knows" either no longer talks to her or such a surface level knowledge that they aren't that important. 2 - In general, starting off with SA is distasteful. It's already a hard subject for people but that being literally the first thing in a book makes you on edge right off the bat (especially without TW acknowledgements beforehand). More than that though, I just really dislike people using SA or r*pe as a reason for someone to discover their power that they never knew existed. It's lazy to me. I can handle it if they always felt something under the surface and this pushed it out, or it protects them from the start of the SA (even better if they know they have powers and the SA transforms their power into something new), but this MC goes through all this SA stuff and it's not til the almost p*nis r*pe that her power suddenly is like "nope F* this". I don't like that at all.
Other main things I didn't like was that she treated her only friend, who in the book had only looked to help her and was the only one that knew who & what she was, like crap. Again, couldn't tell if this was a trauma response, her siren, or just her, but it was awful to see how she treated Malichi throughout this process. She made a lot of stupid or selfish choices and I part of that was because she was losing control of herself because of her siren power, but it wasn't phrased in a way that made that obvious. Lastly, for someone who didn't know who or what she was with no inklings ever that she had powers, she was suddenly fine with using her powers and "good" at it. I understand that the siren power was intuitive and that she had blackout moments, but she never practiced her power intentionally with someone who could stop her in need be, but was just good. Only mentions of accidents was when she was mad/horny and her witch side came out to play and Malichi knew nothing about that stuff since he's a Merman not warlock.
Honestly, I might try this author again with some of their newer works. They have a new series coming out soon, so I might look into that because I want to support indie authors, especially black indie authors, and BIPOC MCs, but I can't do this one.

This started off shaky, but it progresses well. It starts off with an SA scene (trigger warning), which was off-putting. It wasn't terrible for me, but I would prefer a book not to start off like that.
The main character is Syrinada. She is not likable at all, at first. And as another Goodreads reviewer pointed out, you don't know if she is difficult because of her SA or if that is the person she is because we don't know anything about her before her SA.
She goes against her own best interests so many times, and it is infuriating at times. She is so stubborn, sometimes close-minded, and difficult. Just for the sake of it, it seems. Although she thinks she is figuring out her powers on her own. How are you going to figure out something you just learned about 5 minutes ago and then push away your only resources. In what world did she think she knew what she was doing? And she was so selfish that she didn't even consider how her actions would affect those around her. Again, I don't know if that is just her as a person or who she became after the SA.
This did pick up (less eye rolls) about a third of a way through the book. Her character is developing nicely, and she is showing some endearing qualities. I do enjoy the other characters in this book as well. Malachi's patience with Syrinada is strong. She fights him and doesn't listen but he welcomes her with open arms. I don't know if that is because hes bonded with her or he is just that good of a person but i like him better for it. I am very interested in seeing how the story progresses. I will be reading the next book.

Siren’s Call was an amazing read. The author takes the reader on a fantastic journey through Syrinada’s life. The story starts off with a scene that’s very hard to read. Syrinada faces the ultimate violation any woman could go through but she survives it. She’s scarred by the experience but certainly not broken. This horrible experience begins her journey of finding out who and what she really is.
When her friend Malachi comes into the picture, things really start to heat up. Their attraction is undeniable and deliciously enticing. I was entranced by this story from the very first chapter. Jessica Cage weaves a fantastical world filled with sirens, witches and warlocks. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series!

At first I was like, “Damn Sy, can you just relax”. Then I realized that she had no control over her powers and I get the revenge part. Like you’re not just gonna hurt me and get away with it. If I have the power to kill you for what you did, I would do it to. Also her siren powers just came in and we all know sirens are enchantresses.
The more I read, I was like “Damn” to Malachi and Dem, like “can YOU RELAX?”
I love that she became more in tuned with her powers, excited to read the rest to see how her warlock side will play into this.

Siren's Call" by Jessica Cage is a story about Syrinada. She appars to be a normal Chicago girl but one night, something terrible happens to her which changes her life. She survives it yet it changes to fabric of her life. This horrible experience begins her journey of finding out who and what she really is. Her friend Malachi enters into her life, she really starts to feel more than friendly feelings for him. Their attraction is undeniable and full of heat. This book is full of sirens, witches and warlocks. And a possible love triangle with Syrinada, Malachi & Malachi’s brother Demetrius0—Why you wonder? Both brothers seem to be bonded to her.
This story is full of fantastical romance, passion and action. I look forward to book 2 and the continuation of this story.

Syrinada is a normal Chicago girl, if a little alluring to men. But one night she's jumped by a group of unsavory men and taken array to be respected and possibly killed. She escapes when one man's head seemingly combusts on its own. After that, everything changes.
Sy is a half Siren, half Warlock and her friend/crush, Malachi, is a Merman. He and his brother, Demetrius, have always been watching over her.
Now that she's awakened, Syrinada must learn to control herself before the covens catch sight of her and kill her like they killed her mother.
But a devious plan is being fulfilled. Can Syrinada stay alive long enough to enjoy her new powers? Or will she kill someone before any of that happens?
Jessica Cage wrote a really great book featuring creatures we don't see nearly enough in paranormal fiction. Sirens are sexual creatures and this book has no shortage of erotic content!
At least once per chapter someone is doing it with someone else!
But to counteract all the sex, there is also a great deal of mystery, betrayal and danger.
This was a good book with sequel potential and I think that a lot of readers (fans of Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampies series will probably gobble this book up, despite the lack of vampires) will read this over and over!

This is the second book I have read by Jessica Cage and all I have to say is WOW. This story is truly enthralling and addicting I couldn’t read it fast enough. Jessica has managed to put a new twist on mermaids in this book. I was truly captivated. Syrinada (what a unique and beautiful name) had no idea that she descended from a long line of mermaids and that her father was also a mythical creature as well. She finds this out the hard way when unexplainable things happen in her life. Those she thought were friends are really so much more and those she thought of as family have betrayed her. Her friend Malachai and his brother Demetrius are determined to protect her at all costs. This is truly an amazing story and a must read I am impatiently waiting for the second book in the series I can not wait:)

not entertained. unfortunately just as I was starting to find some interest in this book, it abruptly ended. thus pissing me off even further. I noted a few over looked grammatical errors, but overlooked them :) although having to reread a few sentences is annoying, and sure could have been something that the editor should have picked up on. book needed more character discriptions. I actually fell asleep twice while reading this book

I wasn't expecting so much detail on Sy's assault, and the aftermath happens through out the book. That had me scratching my head a bit. Then Malachi's brother comes into the picture, and unexpectedly this book has a love triangle. I don't care for them, and this isn't a good one. The writing is fine, and I'm curious about the Siren stone so I may continue the trilogy. I'm just really not sure...

Travel book club read
I really enjoyed this book and I am so happy that my book friend pick this book for the pick of the month. I enjoyed the characters and plot of this book. The author had me invested in the characters and the direction with this book series. One of my favorite books this month.

3 stars is typically my “I like this, but probably wouldn’t double back” where 4+ would be “i recommend this to others”. Due to the immediate trigger in the beginning, not everybody is gonna vibe with this one…It’s a tricky line to walk on when including very detailed sexual assault scenes and although it didn’t bother me enough to stop reading, it WAS INSANE 😭 Sirens are known for having a dark history and this is exactly that for Sy. The story itself was a little lackluster, but with a lot of potential - knowing that there’s three more in the series makes me expect more exponential growth. Things are bound to get messy and that’s more than obvious. The ending seemed a little rushed but luckily I have the rest of the series on kindle unlimited - I’m jumping right in!

Worth the wait
I absolutely loved this story. It was somewhat spicy but it made the story enjoyable on what the MC storyline was. Can't wait to read what's next.

This is the first book that I have read by Jessica Cage, and I can say that I am in love with her writing style. She really makes the characters (fictional though they may be) come to life for the reader. There were times that it took me a moment to figure out what was going on, but only a moment.
Syrinada seems really immature at first, but then you realize that she is somewhat overwhelmed by what happened to her, what is happening to her, and then she finds out she was betrayed. Thankfully she has Malachi there to help steer her in the right direction. She also finds a protector in Malachi’s brother Demetrius. There is however one problem. Both brothers seem to be bonded to her.
This book gets a 4 star rating from me. I like the hot scenes and the protectiveness that these brothers show toward Sy. It is nice to see a paranormal book about mermaids and mermen for a change. I cannot wait to read the next installment and some more of Jessica’s work.

Right from the start I was excited by this particular story and eagerly waiting for a tale that mixes old fantasy myth with modern city landscape. It was awesome! Every step of the ride made me giddily wait for the next revelation and secret.
Sirenada isn't a normal girl. She's got a potent mix of something special in her blood and it isn't until the final act that you discover who her friends really are. The author kept me guessing as I tried to puzzle out and guess what would happen next, and dammit, I failed pretty hard at that.
I absolutely loved the siren (mermaid) mythos surrounding the creatures introduced within this novel and was thrilled that there were mages involved too. Add a city like Chicago and travel down south, and you've got me hooked. This was a great novel and I am thrilled that I had the chance to read it. I received a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review!

I picked up the Siren's Call without reading the synopsis and it was a pleasant surprise! A story about mermaids with mystery, betrayal, romance and spice? Yes, please!
The story is set in our world, present day, and begins with a sexual assault that not only leaves lasting effects on Syrinada, but alters her world drastically by kicking off her journey into discovering that she is a Siren and that there is whole magical world out there.
There is a lot of explicit spice scenes but they are purposeful in showing Syrinada trying to control her siren magic, as well as adding to the romance.
Overall, I really enjoyed the intriguing plot and romantic tension, and will definitely be reading book 2!

I really enjoyed this book. Jessica Cage is a new author to me this year and I really enjoy her writing. This book flows very well and grabs your from the beginning. It had my from page one until the very end, I didn't want to put it down!
The characters in this book are intriguing to me. I find Syrinada to be strong willed.

This is a wonderfully written and very addicting tale of one woman's struggle to come to terms with her new life. There is intrigue, sexual attraction and conflict. Such incredible detail to character detail as you meet mermaids and mermen. This is an enthralling story of good versus evil; one woman, two protectors and hot steamy sex. Look forward to much more to come from Jessica Cage and her Siren series.

Just Nope
I'm not into books where the female character has to be assaulted or abused to "discover her power". Combine that with copious typos and this book was a fail from the start.
The book needs trigger warnings for sexual assault and drugging. Would never have downloaded it if the book had better information on it.

I got an ARC for an honest review. This is a great story. The way that Syrinada comes into her powers is so tramatic but she survives and thrives. Her protectors, Malachi and Demetrius are amazing and form a great twist. Jessica Cage has a great writing style and I can't wait for her next book.

Can we please stop using rape as a triggering function for the secret power of women? I'm over it and I returned this book because of it. Won't be reading any of her other books. I'm over this trope and the excuses for using it. It wasn't cool then and it sure isn't cool now.

PSA the author did not give any trigger warnings. Moving right along.
Did not finish, will never finish, and I hope I never hear about this book ever again.
I made it to chapter 4 before calling it quits. I'm shocked I made it that far but to be fair I started skimming after the first chapter.
I have so much to say, starting with what the fuck. Why are there people giving this book more than 1 star..

Cage begins this book with an extensive, unnecessarily detailed rape scene, during which the mc is described as being terrified but later on enjoying it but then killing the man in rage? I needed a minute after that rollercoaster alone but then she proceeds to describe the mc’s rapist as “lover boy”.
Whew.
That aside, why begin with a rape scene? There was no prologue, no warning, no characterisation, no build up, nothing. She gave us nothing. We don’t even find out the girl’s name until the second chapter. It read like she just really wanted to write a SA scene and couldn’t help herself. I could get into how problematic that is but I’d be here for much longer than this book deserves. I should also point out that the word "baby" is used 15 times during said scene, all in one 9 page long chapter. Reading it damn near made my brain melt.
Her writing style is reminiscent of wattpad’s glory days. That is my nice way of saying that she writes like an edgy 13 year old…however I have read better material from actual edgy 13 year olds so I'm not sure where that leaves her.
Presently I’m just left unsure if I, a woman in her 20s, am the target audience. Maybe this was written for children.
All in all her writing style is the reason I never want to see her name on a book cover again. The characterisation is nonexistent, as well as the plot and world building. Random characters pop up randomly with no explanations or purpose and the book just has no substance. It's just fucking weird.
Anyway, here's a few quotes that made my eyes bleed:
1. “Maybe that global warming thing everyone’s been yapping about is true”
2. “Let’s fast forward, I mean, you really don't need to hear about skimpy dresses, overly drunk idiots, and a puke fest from hell.”
3. “The night was cold; I checked my phone for the temperature, only 10 degrees!” (not entirely sure why this one hurt so bad to read)
4. “Hey mama, just stay right there baby, I’m coming for you.” (brother eughhh)
5. “I looked down to see what it was and watched in horror as his hand pulled away from me, a needle! He had just shot me with something, some drug.” (sigh..a NeEdLe!)
6. “While my brain was repulsed, my body was rejoicing.” (is this a cnc kink book or?)
7. “dark yet pale skin” (was he gray?)
8. “Even though it sounded like complete nonsense, but so did exploding heads and guts shriveling up from a kiss.”
I'll end the review on that note, my brain needs time to recover.
No stars whatsoever smh.

This is a very powerful and intriguing book and it is not for sensitive readers. Apart from powerful expression, the author's writing gives a raw, unfiltered portrayal of human virtues and flaws, contemplates human nature and moral values. Additionally, the author's plot, character development and world building are simply amazing. I found myself getting lost in the story. And I have to mention it again, this book is not suitable for sensitive readers.
The author does not shy away from gory details and sexual encounters. At times, the book is so incredibly sizzling hot... I have no words to finish this sentence, but wow, so masterfully written. Truly amazing, hot, explicit, raw... Just wow. Not to mention all the intrigue and betrayal... The plot is great and all of the above makes it even better.
The main character is Syrinada (what a beautiful name), Sy to her friends, a newly awakened siren, whose powers started manifesting due to a traumatic event described in the beginning of the book. She is somewhat lost, but so strong and independent, you have to love her. As she is going through her awakening, she is experiencing some incredibly hard times, but she never complains, she struggles and fights and survives. Malachi is there for her, however strange their relationship is. It took me a while to warm up to him, as his personality is somewhat difficult, but he is truly one of the good guys.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, so I would just advise to purchase the rest of the series, because once you reach the end, which will happen sooner than one might think, as this book just flows and reads fast, you will want to find out what happens next, just like I did. So if you are not sensitive to sex and violence, this is an incredibly good book and a must read. I bought the rest of the series after only a couple of pages read, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. And the author quickly became one of my favourites, and I bought all of her other series before I even finished the first book of this one.

Ok overall, the story was decent. It wasn't the best book I've ever read nor the worst. There are some serious issues I have with the story. My biggest issue with the book happened within the first 10 pages. I'm not the biggest fan of using r*pe as a trigger for the FMC to discover her power. Or at least it happening right off the bat. Because of that trauma happening so early in the book, I wasn't sure what to think of Syrinada herself.
Honestly, she was pretty unlikeable throughout most of the story. Again, not sure if it's her actual personality or the result of her trauma. I think Sy would have benefited from having more background and story before her assault.
Now, the overall plot with the witches versus sirens is amazing. It wasn't something fully fleshed out, but it was intriguing enough for me to want to read the next book. I didn't so much like the sibiling love triangle trope, but I do like Malachi and Demetrius! At this point, I'd much rather be reading them as the main character and Sy as the side character.
I will be continuing on as the story itself without Sy is so interesting. There is a lot of lore to be explored! I will say that Sy got a tad bit better before the end of the book. And that cliffhanger is a doozy! On to book 2

I was a little confused at the start of this story, but was quickly hooked as events started to unfold. I've had this book for a couple years on my kindle and am just now getting around to reading it. I went in blind and didn't expect it to be a why choose...definitely not between two brothers!
I will say that a decent chunk of the story that Sy came off very selfish and self-centered. Malachi was doing his best to try and help her and she was determined to go against everything he was advising. When Demetrius entered the story, all I wanted to do was give Malachi a hug. He sat on the sidelines being a good friend and not pushing Sy for anything more. The minute he thought otherwise, she was in a situation that had her drawing from anyone in arm's reach for power. Not only was she bouncing from Malachi to Demetrius and back again, the guys had their own struggles and secrets they were dealing with.
I had a feeling about who it was that betrayed her. I'm still unsure as to why, though. I will definitely be picking up the next book in hopes that that information will be included.
