Ainsi, cet homme qui joua toute sa vie la fiction de l'opéra, connut-il également, pendant vingt-deux ans, à la cour d'Espagne, la réalité du pouvoir. Célèbre dans toute l'Europe, il resta pourtant humble et tendre pour ceux qui l'approchèrent. Retiré à Bologne parmi les fantômes de sa gloire, le vieux castrat reçut, en mars 1770, la visite d'un jeune prodige, dont l'enfance fut également sacrifiée au nom de l'art : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
