Prepare to burn up the pages in this hot paranormal romance by New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cynthia Eden.
Do you believe in monsters? You should, they walk among humans every single day. Reporter Eve Bradley has known the truth about paranormals for a while, and her latest story has taken her inside the mysterious Genesis facility. It’s at Genesis that Eve first meets Subject Thirteen, Cain O’Connor. Big, gorgeous, and truly, truly HOT.
Cain is a phoenix shifter. Every time that he dies, he rises from the ashes…stronger, deadlier, and another step closer to losing his control. And what happens when a phoenix loses control? Welcome to hell on Earth.
Cain feels an instant connection with Eve, a woman who swears she wants to help him. The attraction between them burns hotter than his flames, and soon, Eve is the only link to sanity that Cain has as the world turns to fire around him.
Eve isn’t human, despite the cover she’s used for years, and she is more than capable of withstanding a little heat. But as their enemies plot to trap them, Eve and Cain will be forced to trust each other completely. Be forced to surrender to a desire that cannot be controlled, and soon, if they are not careful, it’s a desire that might just have the power to destroy them both.
If you want something too badly, if you want someone too much…you will never even see the fire coming, not until it’s too late. Be careful. You don’t want to get burned…
Author’s Welcome to the world of my phoenixes! HOT ENOUGH TO BURN is a romance steamy enough to singe your fingers, but what else should you expect from a fierce shifter hero? HOT ENOUGH TO BURN was originally published by Kensington back in 2014, and back then, it had the title of BURN FOR ME. I’m super excited to bring this tale to readers once again! It’s a full-length story (90k), with a guaranteed happy ending.

I enjoyed the premise of this story, but I failed to connect to the characters. Not my first experience with a phoenix shifter, but I really liked how Cain was characterized. His mannerisms, triggers and powers were very unique. He would die and fire would bring him back to life, a little less sane each time. I was more intrigued by the vampire side character, Ryder, than anything else so I hope there's a story for him out there.
Eve is a reporter and gets a job at Genesis research facility who supposedly has 'volunteer' shifters there for some experiments so humans can know more about them and it's supposed to help the government. But she's sure something more evil is going on at the research facility and once she gets hired she finds out she's right.
Cain was captured and sold to the research facility that he's been held at and experimented on for some time now. He doesn't think they know what he is but the doctor in charge, Wyatt is sure he knows and plans on using Cain as a super soldier for the government.
Eve is disgusted and appalled at how Cain is treated. Right away the evil doctor can see that there's something between them and he plans on using that to try and keep Cain in line but Cain and Eve escape and the Genesis facility is blown to bits. They think that Dr. Wyattis dead but he escaped as well and comes after them. Cain is a Phoenix shifter, every time he dies and comes back, he's stronger, more powerful but sometimes doesn't remember his life before his last death for a while and that's when he's very dangerous because his inner beast wants to kill.
Eve gets captured by Dr. Wyatt and is experimented on before Cain can rescue her and now doctor evil knows what she is even if she doesn't know herself. Eve and Cain find themselves caring for each other and getting closer. Every time they find themselves in a dangerous situation, I wondered how they were going to get out and it was fun reading what would happen next. Just when you think they are in the clear, they are thrown another twist and I loved it.
I loved this story. Cain is awesome. He is such a great character and I loved that Eve is just the right person for him and doesn't give up on him, even when he gets a little scary. I loved that there were werewolf and vampire secondary characters that were great too. I'm really looking forward to reading their books as well.
Eve’s character was strong but had a softness to her. She was able to endure but also able to do what was required to help Cain and battle their way to their happy ever after. I loved how she was determined to help Subject Thirteen despite being afraid of him.
Cain was definitely a bit frightful before I got to know him. His abilities were startling and had me flying through the pages to learn everything. The fact that he claimed Eve as his own and was determined to protect her above all else had me swooning with delight. But oh my, when it came to the end…he leaped onto my list of favorite heroes.
This couple shows the reason I read romance. Watching them work around their issues, which included battling some seriously bad, bad guys, kept me enthralled from beginning to end. Add in all the action, drama and danger as well as enough angst to have me tearing up, and this book is perfect!
Four and a half A welcome return by this author to her older Phoenix series that has been given a slight upgrade. Ironically I hadn't read the first book but do actually own the following two books so I was very keen to find out how it all began. Whilst trying to uncover evidence of experimentation and corruption reporter Eve finds herself facing danger as she's forced to meet the Phoenix shifter known as prisoner 13. 13 or Cain repeatedly rises no matter what his captors do to him but each time his inner Beast takes a bit more control. He is attracted to Eve but is she telling the truth and can he trust her ? After all Eve isn't exactly a normal human any more than Cain is ! This certainly grabbed hold of my attention and this series is going to be a blast for those who enjoy paranormal romance. The author certainly pulls out all the stops to give readers an exciting, hot romance. I only wish there had been a little more about Eve and her past because it might have added an extra dimension but I cannot complain about how this thrill ride of a story ended. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
This book had a great premise and was well-written. The plot had so much potential so I was a little disappointed at how thin it was. A few chapters dedicated to building rapport between Eve and Cain to establish some kind of relationship would have gone a long way. Instead, she (despite managing to get in a secret government lab undercover) immediately blows her cover with a 5-year-old's idea of a rescue attempt. Cain is mistrustful of her for about 2 seconds before he decides "she's not like the other girls". Part of what makes this trope so good is the FMC's moral struggle before she decides to save the MMC, and the MMC's slow realization that the FMC is trustworthy.
This book isn't bad, but it seemed more focused on setting up the world for future books than on building out the characters in this one.
Burn For Me, the first book in the Phoenix Fire series and was a lovely bit of escapism during my late-night commutes home and as I tried to slow down my brain.
I love this genre. Eden gives us a sexy, kick-ass Hero and a strong and sassy heroine. There is a good blend of heat, action and sizzle and spark between the MCs.
An epic battle against good and evil! Who will win? Chased, tortured, caged, murdered, over and over! Then she was there! His salvation or the cause of a forever death? Does he kill her, love her, keep her, or run away? Because she can destroy him! Read and discover just how cruel humans are, and they accuse supernatural beings as evil! Not even close!
The story line is a good read, but there are some shifts in the perspective the story is told from. Randomly it changes from third person narrative to first person and back and forth. It could use some refining in the editing department. It was a cute quick read though.
I got this book for free on Amazon. This is the first book I have read by Cynthia Eden. It was ok and I read the whole book but sometimes I crave something more. It had lots of action but not a ton of world or character building. I had just finished a very good book and so this fell a little flat. It could be if I read this while wishing for a fast read it would have been just right but I don’t know. So I would say it’s Okay.
“I can’t.” The words seemed dragged from him. “I need you too much. If anything happened to you…” Eve tilted her head back. “Nothing is going to happen to me.” They were safe now.
There are few authors who can write about men being hot, overprotective and possessive and getting away with it, but Mrs Eden is one of them. I loved every.single.bit of this story. It kept you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what would happen, if and when we would find out what Eve really was. If Cain would get his revenge for what was done to him.
I stayed up late just because I wanted to finish the last shapters of the book and it didn't dissapoint, it was yet another great book by this great author.
Awesome paranormal romance brought back by Cynthia Eden again. Eva Bradley a reporter seeking out the truth of what is happening at the Genesis laboratory. She witnesses the experiment on Subject Thirteen Cain O’Conner and is not pleased. She tries to free him with no success. Eventually they get free from the facility with Eve trying to get the truth out, only to them being hunted by the crazy Dr Wyatt. This is a steamy hot paranormal romance read with lots of fire.
I liked it. The myth stuff was well done. A little too much alpha, you belong to me stuff, but understandable given the premise. I probably won't finish the series, but I would most likely read the Cliff Notes version. Again, I liked the story building, and lore.
Eve and Cain. OMG what a story. Amazing tale that had me clinging to every word by the first chapter. Danger, mad scientist, crazy hot sex, twists and turns you won’t see coming.
The book moved quickly and had plenty of twists and turns. Loved the strength, compassion, determination and humor of Eve. The Eve and Cain love story worked really well.
This book was filled with exciting suspense from beginning to end. I loved how Cain and Eve’s trust and relationship developed in a slow burn that had me on edge to the last page.
I loved the suspense! I have to admit, Eve got on my nerves at times with some of her TSTL (Too Stupid To Live) decisions, but she eventually came through. 😜 Awesome story—kept me glued to my Kindle from beginning to end!
This was boring. I only made it 50% and just... Meh. Was not super connected to the characters - they don't really have personality. Smut was meh. Overall rating of... Meh.
But I couldn't help but make comparisons to the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole in which her paranormal characters were also held up in cages in a scientific/experimental/torture facility. Even though characters and storyline were different it still felt a bit of a copycat series.
And yet the phoenix concept was different and the authors imagery and instincts for feral vampires was different.
Like I said overall it was still enjoyable but perhaps it could have been a bit better...
HOT ENOUGH TO BURN is the first instalment in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary, adult PHOENIX FURY erotic, paranormal romance series. This is phoenix Cain O’Connor, and reporter Eve Bradley’s story line.
NOTE: HOT ENOUGH TO BURN is the re-release of the 2014 BURN FOR ME.
SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately ten years earlier the existence of the paranormal, the supernatural was revealed to the world. A group calling themselves GENESIS is capturing, torturing and performing unsanctioned experiments on the supernatural. These are their stories.
Told from third person perspective HOT ENOUGH TO BURN follows reporter Eve Bradley as she investigates the Genesis facility, a facility performing unsanctioned experiments on the supernatural. Eve will witness the torture and murder over and over of Subject Thirteen aka Cain O’Connor, a man whose inner beast is soothed by our story line heroine. On the run together, our couple have been targeted for their ‘magical powers’, powers when combined reveal a secret our heroine can no longer contain. Determined to take down the people responsible, Cain and Eve find themselves facing off against vampires, super charged werewolves, demons and more. What ensues is the building relationship between Eve and Cain, and the potential fall-out as lives are lost, and Cain struggles with Eve’s need to save the world.
Eve Bradley isn’t quite human but our heroine has the ability to withstand the fall-out from the man with whom she will fall in love. Hoping to reveal the atrocities taking place at the Genesis facility, Eve discovers the experiments are meant to create the ultimate supernatural, an immortal killing machine impossible to kill.Cain O’Connor has only one mission for the foreseeable future-taking down the man betraying the supernatural community but Cain never expected to come face to face with the woman that calls to heart, the woman that calms with beast within.
The relationship between Cain and Eve is one of immediate attraction but Cain fears hurting the woman with whom he will fall in love. Eve has no idea about the who and what of our story line hero but Eve is the only person capable of surviving Cain’s return to the living. The $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and hot, without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to vampire Ryder Duncan, werewolf Trace Frost, and scientist Dr. Richard Wyatt. Ryder’s story line is next.
HOT ENOUGH TO BURN is a story of betrayal and vengeance; power, obsession and control; love and acceptance. The premise is enchanting and intense; the romance is erotic and seductive; the characters are magical and charismatic.
This story had a great premise. Recap: There is a Female reporter who is working to uncover a government cover-up. The cover-up involves illegal experimentation on supernatural beings (who are now roaming freely after they came out of the shadows some years prior). With the discovery of a man being repeatedly killed (pretty sure I'm not spoiling it if I call him a Pheonix). Miss Reporter (Eve) feels like she cannot let this keep happening and fights to save him. This pushes Eve and Cain (Mr. Phoenix) into a hunter-and-prey scenario with the big bad scientists. What else would happen to two individuals forced together to stop the villain? Intimacy.
Feelings on the book: I repeatedly questioned whether the climax of the book would be solved in just this one OR if it was a 100% cliffhanger. With that being said, the storyline could be an amazing world-building series, but it fell flat in the last 10 chapters because there was a finale rush. New characters are brought in, and changes that have very little to do with the original climax make the story feel a little less than it could have been. If you decide to read the book, you will understand why I feel there should have been an earlier end with the new characters pushed to the next book for the chance of greater character building.
Will I read the next - no. No hard feelings, I just wasn't grabbed enough to keep going.
POV: third-person omniscient between two main characters
Even if you are not a fan of paranormal stories, you should read this one. Vampires, Subject Thirteen, Werewolves, Shifters all combine to make this a fun and hot romance. Reporter Eve Bradley is investigating the Genesis Facility for its mistreatment of the “paranormals”. The subjects are supposed to be volunteers, aiding government research, but Subject Thirteen aka Cain O’Connor is chained to a wall. She’s pretty sure he is not volunteering. When she becomes trapped in the facility, Cain escapes and rescues her. He believes he is a monster with no feelings, but she slowly invades every aspect of his being. Cain is hot enough to burn as he can call forth the fire, can die and return to life each time. His fire doesn’t seem to affect Eve leaving her skin unblemished…is she not the human he thought she was? When her friend is adversely affected by the research, she refuses to give up on her efforts to save him, no matter the many threats that she and Cain will face. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
This was a hot mess that dragged on forever. Surely they is a more concise way this story could have unfolded. There’s so much going on it gives you whiplash. This book was annoying to read and it got to the point I was just skimming to find the interesting parts. A sign that less is more.
Also Eve is a whiney little bitch who I wished would have gotten more hurt with all the dumbshit she did and said. I know she was supposed to come off as compassionate but it fell flat, especially when it came to the people who were always trying to kill her or otherwise torcher her. I mean sure free the other victims and spare your enemy the first time, but if he keeps coming back to imprison you, again and AGAIN AND AGAIN, because he’s psycho, kill the arsehole.
This story had a good Idea, BUT I’ve read better versions of this story that had WAY less locations to confuse the fuck out of you and had better development for the main character, not to mention a main character who saw the writing of the wall and didn’t bitch and whine and spare the psycho again and AGAIN!
