Instead, she receives shocking news: King Quill is dead, and she’s the sole heir to the unstable throne he left behind.

While balancing her new role as queen and contending with the corruption surrounding Bersama’s most powerful leaders, Caldera becomes entangled in a dangerous conspiracy related to the former ruler’s death. Abby R Laughlin’s debut novel, The Cosmic Principle, blew me away with fleshed-out characters, and an engaging mystery that grows more complex.

After spending nearly a decade exploring space and becoming captain of her ship, Caldera Keane gets essentially kicked upstairs to become a figurehead queen of her sector. However, Caldera is very much a stubborn fighter, and I love her character. It takes a lot for her to give up, and she sees how broken her world is, she’s doing as much as she can to stop it. At the same time, she cares for her friends and supporters, who she considers her family. Her supporting cast is fleshed out well, each of them feeling like real people, especially Rennick, which has good chemistry with Caldera. Aloriea was also a great support to get Caldera on the political side, and has some good character development as well. The whole group felt like a family by the end of the story.

The science is not too hard to understand, as it’s explained well enough to comprehend what’s going on, but doesn’t drag on one point longer than it has to. While there’s space travel, and Caldera comes from a space explorer background, much of the book takes place on the planet Bersama. A lot of it is political intrigue, which was fun to read through as Caldera is fighting against the council at a lot of points. The mystery is built up well; as one question is solved, many others spring up, and the story doesn’t drag on one point. Even though I knew the twists from reading an earlier version in 2021, they still surprised me when they came up. Especially the . Plus, everything comes together by the end of the story.

As a warning, it does get a bit violent and bloody in parts and there’s plenty of swearing. However, there’s nothing spicy in the sexual department.

The ending was satisfying, wrapping up the main plot, with enough open for more books in the Nexus series, which I’m looking forward to!

This book was outside my comfort zone and in a genre I don't typically read. I'm so glad I gave it a chance. The Cosmic Principle is fast paced debut novel (what? 👀) and kept my attention the whole way through.

The science was easy enough for a newbie (like me) to understand. I loved Caldera, Ren, Aloriea, Sear, and Markarion. This group of friends made my heart happy and no matter how tough things got, they stuck together. Even though Caldera would try to do things herself because she is stubborn like that, her friends always had her back. There is a small bit of romance, but it just adds to the story and doesn't distract you from the main plot.

Abby, my dear, you did a fantastic job on your debut novel, and I can't wait to see what comes next for you.

I enjoy reading sci-fi books. Thus, the reason I wanted to check out this book. So glad that I did as I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was fine, and it did take me a little while to really get into this book but once I did, I was fully emersed in the adventure. Boy, did Caldera, Rennick, and the rest of the crew experience an adventure. They were constantly moving and therefore the story moved as well at a really good pace.

There is romance between Caldera and Rennick that I liked a lot. Yet, there was a nice balance where their romance did not overpower the overall storyline. Which I was thankful as I was not really wanting a sci-fi romance read. Readers who are looking for their next book to read should pick up a copy of this book. I know I will read another one from this author.

I rarely read science fiction because of how different the terminology is within the story that I can't understand the concept of things. However, this book was written extremely well and didn't confuse me at all with how different the "alien" aspects were. It was super fun discovering how Earth became the unknown versus the other way around and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time with all the dangers Callie faces. I may or may not have had my heart break a little at that pivotal scene when they went to retrieve the painite mineral, but knew the silver lining was right around the corner. Overall, this was a great fantasy read that everyone of all ages will enjoy.

Thank you to the author and Nerdy Book Tours for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book so much! Science fiction meets political intrigue with a found family of endearing characters. Caldera and her team were fascinating to read about. Their relationship with each other was heart warming and intriguing.

Captain Caldera hates the King due to the crazy laws and missions he gives them. The country is suffering from poverty and the leaders aren’t helping them. All she wants is to get a position where she can help others.

But when she is called by the council, she learns that the King is dead and she is his heir. Thrust into this new position to be the Queen of her sector, she must figure out the truth behind the king’s death and the secret that everybody is willing to kill to protect.

Caldera and her teammates working together to figure it out was the best part. I loved the investigation part of the story. I enjoyed learning the intricacies of the world created in this book. Every secret was shocking and intriguing when it was revealed.

The romantic part of the story was adorable. Caldera was the kind of character you root for in a story. I’m very excited for the sequel and to watch the characters interact!

This book was exactly the scifi book I wanted to read! It plays out like an episode of The Orville or StarTrek. It has everything from being thrust into a royal position, to political corruption, tons of great space and scifi technology. There's a bit of romance, but I love that it doesn't overshadow the main line of the story. I'm awful with reviews for books I loved... I tend to want to give too much away, so I won't do that this time. But I highly suggest this book and cannot wait for book 2 of the series to come out!

The Cosmic Principle was such a fun and addicting read! The main character, Caldera, becomes Queen when she finds out she is the heir to the King who just passed away. Caldera had no idea she had royalty in her bloodline and is thrust into being the leader of her sector. Caldera is strong and wants what is best for her people and fights for what is right.

This story reminded me of the Hunger Games if it were set in a land like Star Wars. The planet on which this story is based has so many interesting characters. There are lizard people, characters with horns, a sector with individuals resembling cats (my personal favorite), characters with gills. The author is a magician with imagery to where you are immersed in this world seeing the characters and lands as if you were on Bersama yourself.

This book far exceeded my expectations. The story line was fast moving and kept you interested from start to finish. I found myself devouring this book within a day and a half because I just could not put it down. Very excited to see where the rest of the series leads us!

(I am reviewing this based on an ARC copy that was provided free in return for an honest review)

The characters from this book are going to live in my head until the planet stops spinning. I absolutely adored them. Sear is my favourite and not just because he’s a cat person. Which is to say, CAT PEOPLE. Laughlin created some fascinating sentient species in her world, and the individuals of those species shine like diamonds. If you enjoy characters that feel like real people (real cats and lizards too), you will adore The Cosmic Principle.

Same goes for the worldbuilding. What Laughlin made is a whole WORLD (multiple, actually) that seems real enough that you’d think you could visit. The politics, the geography, the history– it’s all there on the page. And it’s never infodumped out, but beautifully interwoven into the plot.

Ah, the plot. While I think the characters and world are the absolute BEST part of this book, the plot holds up its end of the bargain as well. It’s kinda hunger-games-y, but with way more found family. Which is fantastic, because I really like those underdog-lead plots and this one has SO MANY UNDERDOGS. (undercats).

More into details-sans-spoilers, there were definitely moments I audibly gasped, screamed at the book, started speed reading to find out if my theories were about to come true… all the good stuff.

Also. As with every book, it took me a while to get through just because I’m a slow reader. But this story has the infrequently-given honor of me actually remembering the characters and plot and everything between reads because it’s so vivid. You know it’s a fantastic read when *I* can jump right back in.

So yeah. 5 out of 5 inhabitable planets for this gem. 🌎🌍🌏🌍🌎

*Thank you to the author for sharing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!*

Caldera Kane is a caption of the Vanguard - the planet of Bersama’s reconnaissance and exploration force. But when Callie finds out she’s now the queen of the planet through a hidden connection to the former king, her entire world appears in a new light. Underhanded schemes and unsolved mysteries abound as Callie tries to wear the crown and maintain the planet’s peace.

How fun was this book! I’ll admit, I was so caught up in the first handful of chapters, that I couldn’t even form a correct guess as to where the plot was headed. There was danger and friendships, and even once the royal lineage came into play, I couldn’t guess what the turning point of the plot was. Abby did such a great job creating this fictional world while weaving in enough details that you doubted everyone’s intentions and couldn’t see the danger until all the pieces fell into place.

I won’t spoil it, but I loved the moments where Abby created a “making the familiar strange” interaction. Those incidents have always fascinated me personally, and in a world where creatures have claws and horns and tails, I felt like the moment was done so well. We also get the found family trope (one of my favorites), and some budding romance!

The Cosmic Principle is book 1 in ‘The Nexus Series’, and I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the sequel because I’m very excited for what comes next.

Review:
Um, wow! The version of the novel I have read is astounding and amazing. I am impressed by Laughlin's writing and ability to create an epic world of sci-fi and technology. A fun-filled adventure takes place in this novel and creates a great premise for what is to come in the rest of the series. Caldera has easily become one of my new favorite sci-fi characters! She is strong, capable, and a great leader in this novel. It is so refreshing to see a story with exciting characters and a well-thought-out plot. Cannot wait for the rest of the series!

This book had me hooked from the start. There’s this undercurrent of a dark history, a space captain who wants to make a difference, and a whole lot of secrets and mystery.

I adore the world Laughlin has created. When it comes to good sci-fi tech, this novel doesn’t disappoint. Like the suits that you can easily get into and then compress to fit your body shape and weapons that draw energy from their host! Laughlin does a fantastic job of smoothly integrating this tech into the story in a useful and meaningful way. And I love the species of the world, from Tellins who seem to be like humans through to cat-like and snake-like humanoids that primarily live on different sectors. The details describing them are intricate and wonderful. I loved the banter between Caldera and Rennick, especially in the first half, and their budding romance is a sweet touch. The plot is fun to follow and I enjoyed the touches of mystery. I also enjoyed the exploration of power and the exploitation of it.

A really nice, easy read with good pacing and a plot that keeps the pages turning. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a great sci-fi read with a touch of mystery to sink their teeth into! Thanks to the author for my ARC copy.

Abby has written a wonderful debut novel.
A varied cast of characters with clearly their own personalities & voices. The world is built so interesting with a dark history looming & a ton of mystery & secrets to uncover.

I especially love how relatable Caldera is as I really could connect with her throughout this book. Learning more about the different species such as Sear & Aloriea was so interesting & woven really naturally in the story. To top it off, the romance is also woven in this story so good.

The worldbuilding is also done amazingly, the introduction to the world, its history, the hardware & technology is done gradually. Add the secrets & mysteries on top of that, it kept me reading forward. The only downside of that is that the beginning of the novel moves a bit slow because of that.

Overall an enjoying & amazing sci-fi read that is absolutely worth it to add to you reading list. Already curious to the next books in this series.
4.5 stars > adding up to 5 stars from me.

I read an early copy of Abby R. Laughlin's debut novel, and it did not disappoint. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat from start-to-finish. A strong story that dives deep into political corruption and government control. Complimented by a strong cast of characters and moments that will tug at your heart.

The Cosmic Principle is a strong first installment for what will no doubt be an amazing book series. This is a must read for any Sci-Fi adventure reader or any reader seeking that next great adventure story.

Full disclosure, I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Cosmic Principle is the first indie sci-fi I've read outside my own work and it was interesting to see how a different author tackled the genre. Laughlin has a great grasp on the sci-fi aesthetic and is a very detailed worldbuilder. There wasn't a single scene that I couldn't envision. Laughlin has also come up with some fascinating choices for alien characters that range from semi-feline to semi-reptilian. Each alien race seemed to have their own physiological quirks which made them really fun to delve into.

The cast is a mixed bag for me. Caldera, Rennick, and Aloriea are great characters with a lot of depth and solid chemistry. Caldera is a good fish-out-of-water protagonist and is very relatable, however her intelligence/decision making often made me question "how were you ever elected as a captain?" The same goes for Rennick: he's a savvy, quippy first mate who should have a certain level of expertise but he often makes rookie mistakes. Aloriea is my favorite character because 1. I'm a sucker for quirky side characters, and 2. because she had the most gripping tie to the greater story. All other characters ranged from one-dimensional to cliche, especially the oh-so-obvious bad guys.

There was a lot in this book that frustrated me, unfortunately. The plot moves at a snail's pace and tension is often rendered ineffective because it's created by characters making dumb decisions. The political intrigue wasn't engaging and lacked stakes throughout most of the book; I often found myself skimming through sections due to the repetitiveness. Laughlin also really likes using italics in dialogue for emphasis at least twice per page, and it became distracting.

Overall, I think the story could’ve used a bit more polish before publishing. The characters were compelling and the worldbuilding was great, but the pacing just wasn’t there for me.

3.5 Stars!

The Cosmic Principle is a Science Fiction novel which centres around the main character, Caldera Keane. Caldera, or Callie as she is known to friends, has been a Captain of the Vanguard for nearly a decade. After a failed mission she is summoned to the palace on her home planet to answer for the failure or so she thinks. Instead she discovers she is the heir to the throne and is now Queen. A dubious honour as the previous ruler seemingly died under mysterious circumstances and the palace seems fraught with danger and lies.

This novel is at times more political intrigue then science fiction and Abby Laughlin does a good job creating interesting characters and species amongst the council at court. We have species of lizard people and also cat-like people and the way they live together and interact is really intriguing and one of the strong points of this novel. The main problem that I have is I found it really hard to warm up to the main character. I think that Callie is supposed to be a reckless, carefree character but her decision making and her emotional responses to situations often left me wondering how she was ever made a Captain. So she was a little unbelievable to me. I did like the slow and sweet build up of romance in the novel and also the loyalty Callie has towards her friends. I felt that the side characters of Sear and Aloriea were more interesting to me than the main characters. Aloriea in particular had an intriguing previous relationship with the former King and I would have liked that to be explored a little more.

This is the first book in a series and the world that Laughlin has created is fun and there is a surprise towards the end that I didn't see coming. I am excited to see what happens next in the series.

I received a free ebook of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and is written voluntarily.

I felt immersed from the first page. The Cosmic Principle truly takes its lead from classic science fiction novels to deliver an astounding, unique story. World building, character creation, and plot development were good; overall, it was a beautifully written first installment. It is a solid 4.5 stars (GR should really add half stars)

Classic Sci-Fi
Murder Mystery
Light, Clean Romance
Suddenly Royalty
Found Family

It does not end on a cliffhanger, which I appreciated (I’m not opposed to them, just think they’re overused). However, I am certainly ready for more from Caldera and her crew!

There were some elements I didn’t particularly love, and a bit of a spoiler at the end so be WARY.

I do feel the pacing was off at times. Important moments in the plot seemed rushed, things that should’ve been difficult obstacles were overcome too easily. Moments that were deeply emotional didn’t hit quite as they should have/felt lackluster - maybe due to the pacing issue – and could’ve used an artistic pause to really let that emotion sink in.

Anything I didn’t *love* about the story were all things that can be addressed (or are a personal preference) and not a deal breaker in any way.

With all that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

MILD SPOILER: In particular, Laughlin’s description of Earth as an alien planet was hauntingly beautiful and convincing. It drove home the feel of the novel and actually had me sit back and think about how truly subtle and incredible her writing was. I so closely identified with the main characters that I started to identify more with them than regular humans! It was almost shocking when Earthlings entered the story and I thought to myself, “Wait, what? Oh yeah…I’ve been in an alien galaxy this whole time!”

“The Cosmic Principle” by Abby Laughlin is a recently released Science Fiction novel, and first in the upcoming Nexus series. The novel follows protagonist, Captain Caldera Keane of the Vanguard — a group of planetary explorers on a search for inhabitable exoplanets and resources— who discovers she’s part of a royal bloodline. Quickly thrown into a murder mystery, Caldera and her friends unravel a plot that is farther reaching than any they could imagine. The novel primarily takes place on a fictional planet within the Centaurus Galaxy, named Bersama. The planet is resource deficient and seemingly the only inhabitable plant in the galaxy after a “cataclysm” leaves four out of the five inhabited planets in the system without rotation. Due to the cataclysm, alien life outside of Bersama are forced to relocate for survival. Species segregation ensues as races are divided between five sectors, governed by sector leaders who ultimately only serve as figure heads to a corrupt ruling Council. In the face of political turmoil and a growing sense of urgency as the planets resources quickly dwindle, the dubious release of dangerous military technology at the order of Council Leader Vandren, creates further tension in a plot that keeps you guessing to the very end. Utilizing excellent world building skills to weave an intriguing narrative that gives life to a dying galaxy shrouded in mystery, “The Cosmic Principle” sets the stage well for future novels. The Nexus series is a Science Fiction franchise to look out for.

This sci-fi novel follows the story of Caldera Keane, a captain in the Vanguard, which she has dedicated her life to. After breaking the rules during a mission, she is summoned by the palace. She thinks she's in trouble, but instead, her entire existence is changed.
I really liked this book! I very much enjoy sci-fi, as long as the science part isn't too complicated. In this book, the science was completely understandable and almost more of a background thing aiding in the world building. Abby Laughlin did a phenomenal job introducing the world to us, with vivid descriptions helping to bring everything to life.

I also loved the character building in this book. Abby Laughlin managed to introduce us to characters and help us get to know them primarily through their actions rather than going into tiresome descriptions about them, and I very much appreciated that.

Regarding the storyline, from the get-go I got the feeling something was off on the planet. I felt Caldera was being lied to about something, and I very much enjoyed that mystery aspect. I also enjoyed Caldera as an MC. She is a badass, loyal, and intelligent, and her being so likable makes the story super easy to read. I can't wait to read book 2!

🌌As always check the trigger warnings

🌌Quick Synopsis: Caldera is a Space Captain exploring the solar system in hopes in finding a way to help her home planet Bersama. After something goes wrong on her last mission is she is summoned to appear in front of the King fearing she’s in trouble. Caldera finds out she is the heir to the throne and her sectors new Queen. However, everything isn’t as it seems and Caldera will have to figure out who to trust and the truth if she wants to help her planet.

🌌Liked: The twist in turns in this book are so good! I had to go back a few times and reread what I thought I read. The story line is fast paced and very detailed. However, it was was so well described and written it was easy to keep track of everything and what was going on. The slow burn romance was well written and did not over power the story.

🌌Disliked: It was hard at first for me to get into the book however after the first 3 chapters I was hooked.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. For me personally, Sci-fi is either a hit or a miss. Abby R Laughlin's The Cosmic Principle was definitely a hit. What I loved about the book was that the characters were so fleshed out. Sometimes with Sci-fi technology in the books almost feels like it overrides the characters and the plot. This was not the case for The Cosmic Principle. The characters were really fleshed out and I really liked following Caldera (the Main Character) through her journey. The only thing that fell a little flat was slightly disjointed transitions but I don't feel like that really impacted me too badly (just prevents me from giving it a full 5 stars). It could maybe have been due to the pacing. The pacing was pretty quick so I am not sure if all the emotions really had their full potential impact. Regardless, I am happy that I read. The Cosmic Principle is beautiful and compelling read. It is also a good book for people who don't like to get bogged down in all the tech.

In a quirky unusual way i totally got matrix vibes minus the machines and codes.
I hope your not to too squeamish as there is more than an element of gore throughout the story.
Who knew politics could be oh so demanding.
The story demands so much attention and whilst there is an element of romance the story isn't completely dependant on it or does it dive head first into smutsville.
I love how Abby makes all the places visited, worlds etc as real as the planet we live on with her creative writing and the language she chooses.
I totally felt like by the end of the book i was part of the team not only on an adventure but visiting the worlds right along side them not one point did i feel i had to stretch the imagination to create the ideas in my head where the writing didn't offer up the goods as it was nailed every.single.time!
So many plot twists and hidden gems that i was totally not expecting when i started reading this book, my only disappointment it had to end!!
I cannot wait to see what comes next from Abby!

The Cosmic Principle by Abby R. Laughlin

Multiple planets destroyed in the Centaurus galaxy, leaving only one. Fast forward 100 years later to Captain Caldera aka Callie. She is a badass explorer who wants to help people in her sector live better lives. But after a mission gone wrong, she's escorted to the palace only to be told she's the heir to her sector.

I am so glad that I finally read this book because I was craving a sci-fi story! Such a great read! I really enjoyed the setting/world building. The visuals were so clear in my mind, which made it easy to read.

The characters in this book were fun and had some good banter. There was lgbtq representation. I adored the fmc, she cared so much for the people around her and always put them first. But she was also very headstrong and didn't let people walk all over her. There are elements of betrayals and conspiracies. You also get a bit of a slow burn and friends to lovers. It was fast-paced and fun to read!

I received this arc in exchange for an honest review :

For every sci-fi enthusiast out there, you might want to take a look at this little gem ! It has everything, from amazing worldbuilding to intricate political conspiracies along with some action. Caldera is a badass FMC and, being the hot headed captain she is, she's got the best team and friends to support her.

I loved the depth the author gave to the villain and their motivation, the detailed intrigue only adds to the complexity of the character keeps you on your toes.

As for the tech and scientifical jargon, with the context and the way it was introduced, it was very easy to comprehend without disturbing the rythm of the story.

Overall The Cosmic Principle is a great debut novel and I can't wait to see the rest of Caldera's journey !

I really loved this book. It has fun characters who are relatable. There are completely different races. It reminded me of when I was military and everyone coming together for a common goal.

I was really into the story and then suddenly it twisted and got very “close to home” and I loved it even more. The action is great and on going and I love the survivalist nature of the characters.

The world building was interesting and I could visualize everything.

I could see myself in the main character. Her, quick thinking, quick acting, there’s always a way, never give up, protect your loved ones and the goal, attitude is exactly my personality. That attitude doesn’t come with it’s own downside which I sometimes stumble through. There were times that I thought the main character should be more careful. But I loved it all and can’t wait for the next one.

Caldera, a captain in the Vanguard, has her entire world turned upside down the day she is informed that the King is dead and she is his long lost neice and only relative, making her the new Queen. Unfortunately, along with the new sector she has inherited, there's also a corrupt ruling system, assassination attempts, and intergalactic travel.  She must navigate through spies and politics to survive and save her people.

I really enjoyed this book, and I think it only took me about two days to get through.  Rennick, Caldera's friend turned body guard, is my favorite character.  The world building and action scenes were very well done, and I loved all the different kinds of species in Caldera's world.  Action, slow burn romance, and humor all packed into one book, made this a great read, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

I don't read a ton of scifi, but do enjoy it occasionally and was grateful to receive an ARC of this book! All opinions are my own.

First off, I will say, I was not a huge fan of the MC in this book. Especially early on. She was quite rude to people that were supposed to be her friends, which confused me. And continuously put those around her in danger by making dumb decisions. So... there's that.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed the story. It wasn't what I'd expected at all, based on the title and cover, but that isn't a bad thing!

I loved the various friendships and the world created in this book, and am always down for a plot that works to take down a corrupt system. The ending was satisfying, though certainly left room for more books if the author so chooses.

Sci-fi. Mystery. Adventure. Conspiracies. A little bit of romance. What's not to love?! I went into this not knowing much but the bare bones. There was LGBTQ+ representation and that was all it took to get me hooked! But getting into the story and delving deeper and deeper into the plot there was so much more to get sucked into! I loved reading about Caldera's journey as she tried to fit into her new political and royal role. Loved the mystery behind everything and not really knowing what was going to happen! I can absolutely say all of my conclusions were wrong and I owe a hefty apology to Justle and Saro but man was I happy to wrong! If I could read this book for the first time again I absolutely would!

I don’t read many sci-fi stories, but this one really blew me away. Right from the start I was intrigued by what was going on. I instantly got the feeling that there was all kinds of political corruption and wickedness going on behind the scenes. As the plot started to develop I was riveted to my seat, and turning the pages quickly to see how it was all gonna play out.

I loved all the characters, their uniqueness, their creative personalities and looks. At times they made me laugh, shocked me and kept me on my toes.

The story is well written, it was entertaining, thrilling, exciting, and was filled with action, suspense, corruption, emotional turmoil and some shocking secrets. I highly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next one.

This book has made me cry rage want to murder and throw my iPad across the room. Needless to say. I loved it. The story is compelling and the characters are lovable and the twists this book took shocked me. Very fast paced and kept the story rolling. The one thing that makes this a 4⭐️ for me is there are a couple of things I would have liked more information and somethings that are mentioned but not fully explained (but could totally be explained in the next book but it felt like the subjects were dropped off in this one not leading on to more info coming later) but besides all of that amazing read amazing story and I can’t wait to find out what happens next

3 stars, rounded down from 3.5

This book has action, a smidge of blossoming romance, a dose of political intrigue, realistic friendships amongst the diverse main characters, and villains you'll want to punch in the throat.

It played out like an episode, or several, of Star Trek. Especially with the 5 different species sharing control of one planet.

There were a few little bits of the story that I wish were more fleshed out, but this book is the first in a series so those things might be expanded upon in the next book.
