When I was in my late teens I would frequent the local movie theatre to see 35mm screening of grindhouse films curated by a local group of film fans. Before each screening there would be some fantastic trailer compilations. It was there in a darkened theatre that I first saw the trailer for Dolemite and The Human Tornado. That was my introduction to Rudy Ray Moore and I have been a fan ever since.
A few years ago I picked up the wonderful blu-ray editions of all of Moore's films and in the special features I got to hear and see a lot of Mark Jason Murray. He is one of, if not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to Rudy Ray Moore. When Mark announced that he would be putting out an authorized biography of Mr. Moore I was ecstatic. I anxiously awaited my copy to arrive and it exceeded my expectations greatly.
The book chronicles the life and work of Rudy Ray Moore with extreme detail and care. From his early life traveling the Chitlin Circuit, through his 1950s recording career, party albums, films, resurgence in the late 80s and 90s, and through to the posthumous film Dolemite is My Name, this book has it all and more! The hardcover version is something to behold with it's glossy pages making all of the images really stand out beautifully amidst the text.
I recommend this book to fans of Rudy Ray Moore, Black History buffs, aspiring filmmakers and comedians, and anyone who wants to hear a story of continued perseverance against all odds.

A book produced in the home made vein of Moore’s own work, which is to say somewhat shoddy. On the other hand, it’s fascinating and filled with valuable ephemera.
