PRINCE CHARMING ON A HARLEY With his faded leather jacket and a bike that's seen better days, Neill Devlin doesn't look like a bestselling author or a man trying to keep one lane ahead of loneliness. Loving, Indiana, is as nice a place as any for his bike to break down -- especially when he catches a glimpse of a beautiful woman with an odd air of mystery about her who draws him into her spell...
DAMSEL IN DISTRESS Anne Moore has lived her life in the shadow of tragedy. Imprisoned by her own past, she can't escape the chains that keep her tied to this town and to a life that is slowly suffocating her. She isn't looking for a hero -- and Neill isn't looking to slay any dragons. But in his heart he holds the key to freedom and happily ever after -- for both of them.
Born and raised in Colorado, Dallas Schulze now lives in California. She sold her first book in October 1983. It was published under her pseudonym Dallas Hamlin in the Candlelight Ecstasy Romance line. She loves happy ending and wrote category romances, contemporaries and historicals for Harlequin, Silhouette, Dell and Mira. Her latest title was published in 2004.
Crime writer breaks down in a rural city, falls for a beautiful sheltered girl whose older sister had been murdered. I kinda expected him to solve the mystery. Or for there to be sex. Or for an explanation as to why the mother was so oddly cold. Disappointments all around.
This was a quick read with good characters in an interesting story line but I don’t really care for books that hurry the ending. This one should’ve had an epilogue with just a little bit of what would have been.
http://leslecturesdeveralice.blogspot...
True crime novelist and best selling writer Neil Devlin is on a motorcycle trip that takes him cross-country when his bike breaks down near Loving, Indiana. At thirty-five he was burned out and needed a break. After three weeks on the road he has come to the conclusion that life on the road is highly overrated. He is given a ride to the only mechanic in the area and he figures out there is a God after all, after seeing Anne Moore for the first time. Anne's beat-up Volkswagon bug 'Lucy' is in the garage for the umpteenth time when she meets Neil. There is a brief introduction between the two, her VW is fixed and she leaves for her job at the bank. Neil finds out that he will have a layover when parts have to be ordered to fix the 'Indian'. The mechanic instructs him to stay at his kooky great-aunt Dorothy's motel and from there Neil realizes he wants to see Anne again and learn more about her and this eccentric town.
Anne lives in a small home on her parents' land. She has led a sheltered life after the tragic murder of her older sister that happened years before. A mother with a dominant icy personality, a father who no longer communicates with his wife or children and a brother who has his own hidden skeletons, it is a wonder that Anne is as normal as she is. Her brother is the local sheriff and dating Anne's best friend, Lisa. She is a bohemian designer and someone their mother strongly dislikes. Actually, their mother appears not to care for anyone including her own family. Lisa has recently made her aware that her brother shows signs of becoming an alcoholic. There is also Anne's weekly date with Frank Miller that chugs along with no sparks. All this and more add to the flavor of the storyline.
With good intentions Neil misleads Anne regarding his profession and it causes some problems later on. Despite those who want to shelter and protect Anne she continues her relationship with Neil. Will he stay once his bike is fixed or will all the do-gooders run him off? A mild contemporary romance you'll want to read the book for the quirky characters and their relationships with each other. Not overtly steamy there are some love scenes later on but I found I didn't need this to know that they were meant for each other or to enjoy the story. There is also the quick-fix between Lisa and the brother that is a little unrealistic and I found I wanted to know more about the solution to her sister's death but Ms. Schulze did give the reader some closure.
For the most part the dialogue is clean and though published in 1999 the setting feels like it is from the mid-twentieth century, an age of outward innocence. If you grew up in 50's, 60's or early 70's you may remember what that was like. Doors and cars were left unlocked, kids could meet friends at the mall or the movies without parents worrying and neighbors knew each other. Though anyone may like this, I can't recommend this romance for those under 40 even though I enjoyed it. I think you needed to live during this earlier era to appreciate this narrative. For me it has found a place on my keeper shelf.
TBR Challenge: July Category- Fairy Tale. Sleeping Beauty has been on my TBR list since June 28, 2010.
15 years ago, Anne's older sister Brooke was murdered. Anne's controlling mother, guilt-ridden brother, emotionally absent father, and even the well-meaning small town have all contributed in keeping Anne in an emotional limbo. She's tried to please her mother by being perfect, and everyone else has tried to protect her by being smothering and over-protective.
Into this half-life rides true-crime author Niell, whose motorcycle breaks down in Anne's small town. His attraction to Anne shakes up her world, and brings on emotional confrontations with friends and family. The book isn't a suspense. The lasting effects of Brooke's murder are the backdrop for the awakening of this particular Sleeping Beauty. The tension level is kept fairly low.
Overall a quick and enjoyable read. Nothing original, but pleasant.
I first read this book years ago when it was first published (1999) & I gave it a high rating. Reading it again 17 yrs later I wonder what I was thinking. I guess I was more into fluff then!! Cause that's what this is. I would have read it in 1 evening if I had not been busy with other stuff.
