Alter is a gripping and intricate tale of conspiracy, mad scientists, and broken lives. A multiverse of blurry lines, lies, and deceit where we are confronted with the best of humankind... and its very worst.
This book is nothing short of incredible. Without giving away too much, it's a multiple-POV, multiple-world, action-based YA SF with a dash of romance that will have you questioning reality the entire way through. There are multiple main characters, but the one we get to know first is Laura. Laura sees other worlds in her dreams and daydreams, and sometimes her sense of reality is blurred by the 'imaginary friends' in her head. The people in her head aren't mere voices but wholly developed characters with their own vast worlds and histories that slowly become unfurled as they take over the POV chapter by chapter.
The storyline is trippy and complex, and right up until the end, I was questioning whether any of what Laura and her counterparts were experiencing was real, and it was driving me nuts in the best way. There are bad guys and weather manipulation and fractured realities, but if I tried to explain the entire plot to you here, you'd probably understand 10% of it; yet despite the complexity of the narrative, this book was a breeze to digest, and that's one of the things that makes it so great. It is impeccably crafted. Even those who don't typically read SF will be able to read, understand, and enjoy this book thanks to the great lengths the author has gone through to make it digestible without info dumping and amid 5 different POVs that switch frequently. We're talking 5 different plots/worlds/characters all fully developed and explored with parallel pacing, through seamless world-building, that all converge and make sense. This is like, mastermind sh*t. There's got to be a binder full of diagrams or a whiteboard out there somewhere where all of this was plotted out, and for a writer like me, it is damn impressive.
As far as the writing goes, it is so raw and descriptive and flush with showing over telling. H.R.'s use of figurative language in this book truly amazed me. There are those simile/metaphor/personification moments that usually stick out when you're reading a book, and you think to yourself, 'Oh, that was a creative way to say that.' But no, this book had them peppered throughout it to the point that I felt bad reading so fast, like I was taking them for granted. The descriptive language was so varied, so vivid. I could feel the emotional and physical pain of the MCs. The various worlds felt alive, and it was easy to plunge into them, even when they switched mid-chapter. I felt the physical and emotional toll of this journey on the characters, and that level of rawness takes talent. I cannot compliment the writing in this book enough.
I loved the voices of the characters, different and at the same time familiar, and I especially enjoyed Laura. She brought humor and sarcasm to her parts of the story that offered hope to some of the bleakness of the other narratives. I LOVED THE WAY SHE COMPARED EVERYONE TO BIRDS. It was bizarre and amazing. I loved the video game store and some of the pop culture references thrown in for fun. And there's EVEN a romantic subplot that crosses realities. My love-loving heart latched on to that hard. I'd love to see more Laura(?) x Wade in the next book!
Yeah, I don't know what else to say. I feel like I could blab on and on, but you won't understand half of what I'm saying until you've read it for yourself. This is first in a trilogy, and the ending will have you questioning things. (That clock moment!!!) I am so, so excited to see what else is in store because after that ride, I can't even begin to imagine where this plot will go, but after what we've seen so far, I know it's going to be good.
If you love science fiction, you'll love this series! If you hate science fiction, I still recommend you give it a shot because I really think this book will surprise you. This could be your gateway.
Alter is an intense and intriguing story! The intricate prose had my head spinning, searching for answers in a vivid and terrifying multiverse. I felt the protagonist Laura's confusion and kept trying to figure out who Wisdom was. This was an ambitious and original debut novel.
Where has this book been?! This has been published for a year and I'm just now finding out about it.
This book switches up POV between several characters and worlds that include Laura from Earth, Lennox from the Dark World, Erris from the Wet World, and more. I was gobbling up the story as fast as I could so I learn all of their secrets. The lineup of the multiverse and the characters were amazing and the connections had me gasping. The author did an amazing job with character building. I could easily see the different personalities between the characters and though they have slight similarities, I didn’t lose the character who was actually in control. The ending wrapped things up well while also leaving room for the second book.
I really enjoyed the author's writing voice and the story moved at a great pace. I already have the second book added to my tbr list and the third comes out in a couple of months! I can't wait to continue Laura's story and see where everyone else goes. This is a highly recommended book if you enjoy the multiverse, secret experiments, and betrayals so close it will cut your heart. Happy reading!
Holy crapes!! I did not imagine this book was going to blow me away, but it totally did!!!!
It’s got a science fiction vibe, but you don’t have to love science fiction to enjoy it. It’s AMAZINGLY WELL WRITTEN!!! There’s a lot going on, but it’s written in such a way that you don’t get overwhelmed. The different worlds are so well written that they were really easy to visualize. And the different characters…Laura, Lenox, Wisdom, Erris and Violus…were written so well that I never found myself getting confused about who was who. They were all so different and well described, so that I could picture them and felt like I knew each one personally. Like I said, the writing is AMAZING!!
This is such an original concept, unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I enjoyed it immensely! The plot flowed flawlessly and kept my interest throughout. I had a hard time putting it down and going to bed. There’s going to be a book two, and I am so excited to read it!! Truelove is now an author I will be following, because I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!!
Laura has lived most of her life in an institution where she has blackouts, sometimes hurting others. The blackouts aren’t real as she is switching minds with others like her who live in other worlds. No one believes her, and the mental institution does not cure her. Will she live the rest of her life this way, or can she solve this conundrum and live a normal life?

H.R. Truelove penned a remarkable story of multiple worlds and characters that are separate yet blend in the most bizarre way.
Alter is a gripping novel that keeps the mind spinning. There are so many connections between the worlds and characters. Laura, Lennox, Wisdom, Erris, and Violus are connected in the most unusual way. They are the same, yet drastically different.
The cover represents all of the worlds and the element that represents each. There is a Wet World, a Dry World, etc. Each place has its own problems and characters. Will the issues be solved? If so, how will that happen, and who will make it happen?
Alter is one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read, and I’ve read so many books it would make your head spin! I am floored by the breathtaking writing in this book. Holy smokes! How did Trulove write this in a way that is so easy to understand? All of these connections could easily be confusing to the reader, but alas, they aren’t! I am thrilled that this is a series because I didn’t want Alter to end.
Thank you to R&R Book Tours, the author, and the publisher for providing this book for me to read and review.
Alter is the science fiction debut novel by H. R. Truelove. I am not normally a sci-fi reader but this book intrigues me. The premise sounded amazing and I wanted to give it a try.
First off let me say how original this book is. The idea of time travel and different dimensions is a mind boggler to me. This book breaches the idea and takes it to a whole new level. Without spoiling anything, the story follows Laura who has been in a mental hospital for most of her life. She sees things that are not there and goes to places in her mind where when she wakes up, bad things have happened. Laura was my favorite character by far and her story did break my heart but the author did a spectacular job writing this story.
H. R Truelove has written these characters so well and makes it easy to follow. The world was very complex and so descriptive. I found myself drawn into the story and didn't want to leave. I needed to know how this story was going to end. It had me on the edge of my seat and truly blew my mind. Try this one out. It is very well done and truly entertaining. I give this book 5 stars.
Okay, so this is not a normal read for me. I tend to stick more with fantasy, occasionally horror, so sci-fi is a bit outside my wheelhouse. BUT, this book sounded intriguing, I knew I had to give it a go. And boy, I’m glad I did!
The imagination that went into this story is unreal. There are multiple characters spanning across multiple worlds, all of which exist inside seventeen-year-old Laura’s head… or so she’s been led to believe. Each world was distinct. Each character unique. And, as the reader (and Laura) discover how these words and characters come together is absolutely mind-blowing. I sometimes had a hard time putting this book down, because I was so desperate to find out what happened next!
The only real complaint I had was that I wanted more, lol. I wanted to dig deeper into this multiverse. But, as there’s a sequel planned, I’m sure I’ll be getting that wish eventually.
Definitely give this one a try if you’re looking for a fun mind bender. It’s truly one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read.
The best head cannon I’ve ever read and I’m not sure I posses the vocabulary to describe this book and how incredible it is. This is a world combining page turner that keeps you on your toes.
The writing is beautiful and effortless, the story just jumps off the page. I have not been a huge fantasy/ sci fi book fan before but this book has changed my mind!!!
This was a fun and crazy ride. I wasn't sure if I'd like it at first, but it slowly sucked me in. I'm reading the series in preparation of book 3 releasing on Oct 26th from the new publishing company I'm working with. Definitely continuing on with the series!
thanks Netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review Alter was a very confusing read. Imagine a book about one confusing world. This one has five. Our main character, Laura, lives on earth, and everyone thinks she’s crazy for hearing and seeing things. And also killing. Turns out she’s not crazy, she just has five other versions of herself that jump through alternate realities. Each world has some sort of environmental disaster, except Laura’s hasn’t had it yet. The others are Arial(whose long gone by the time we start at), Lennox, Wisdom, Erris and Violus. Each world is interesting, but not all get the same amount of POVS, and I don’t really get the point of Violus at all. Arial and Wisdom were the most interesting to me. The side characters felt random most of the time. However, I did keep going to the next chapter to find out what would happen. I'd probably read the next one to see if it helps make sense of this one.
I have to say, sci-fi isn't my usual go to read. Even with it not being my favorite genre, I loved this book. The entire idea is so unique to me. The writing was beautiful and the characters were all so easy to get attached to. I had so many theories while I was reading, that all turned out to be wrong in the end. I ordered book 2, and I can't wait to dive into it!
Laura has spent her whole life knowing that there are other worlds out there. This knowledge has not done her much good in her own world, where people look at her like she has three heads (at the best of times).
However, this knowledge – this connection – has put Laura in the position to save the world. Or rather, worlds. Together, she and her counterparts must find a way to stop the mad scientists from breaking the multiverse.
My Review:
Oh wow. Wow! It's been a hot minute since I read a multiverse story this complex (and I probably read more than my fair share!). Alter is as fantastical as it is compelling, with deadly twists around every corner.
There are multiple perspectives that make up this book, but Laura always felt like the primary one to me. That said, I really enjoyed reading the other perspectives. Not only were their opinions refreshing, but it was a delight to see their worlds (even if those very worlds all had their own problems and all were on the brink of collapse).
One thing Alter does that I love is that each chapter has the POV as the heading. This makes it so much easier to follow along with what is happening. Given the complexity (and the number of characters), this matters. A lot.
I also love that Alter gets under your skin. It makes you feel for all the characters (good and bad). These aren't one-dimensional beings. They feel like real people. It's perfect.
Did I mention that Alter is the first novel in a series? So there will be more worlds in our future! I already have the next two lined up to read, and I can't wait.
Highlights: Dystopian Fantasy Multiple Worlds Layers of Secrets
Trigger Warnings: Self-Harm & Anorexia (mentioned/referred) Torture & Loss
I got Alter from Midnight Tide Publishing for a book review tour, however I bought the audiobook from audible.
Alter is a perfect trippy story. The way it's written makes you feel like you are the main character Laura. I felt I had the same feelings as Laura did and spent the most part of the novel going what on earth is happening. I really enjoyed how all the characters in twine with each other and created the fantastic story. Towards the end of the novel I did think one of the characters was shady, but you couldn't guess how it was going to pan out. The suspense was killing me and I had to keep reading/listening.
I just enjoyed everything about this novel.
The audiobook is narrated by Nicole Hill and she did a fantastic job. I really enjoyed how she did the different characters and made this story come to life.
This book was seriously incredible! I was invested right from the very beginning and rooting for Laura the whole time. I really loved the multiverse and figuring out what in the world(s) was going on at the same time that Laura did. This was definitely a book I didn't want to put down. I was so curious to see what would happen next. I would highly recommend this book to any sci-fi fan, and I'm so excited for the sequel!
This was such a different, but interesting story. It takes a few chapters for everything to make sense, but it’s worth pushing past that. This story had me continually wondering what was real, and what wasn’t.

In her debut novel, H. R. Trulove weaves a multi-POV, multi-world, and multi-dimension/reality action Sci-Fi that will make your head spin. This chunky book is not one you can just breeze through. While it’s written in an enjoyable and easy-to-read style, there are so many details and necessary information that it’s easy to get a little lost or confused, so you have to pay attention. That being said this book is amazing! I've never read anything like this. The detail and depth of both the characters and worlds are superb. It's also a decently-paced book; some chapters go by super quickly, and others have enough action to make it seem fast.
This doesn't technically end on a cliffhanger, but it does allude to there being more; which is fantastic. This is the first book in the Alter series, and for now, Goodreads shows three books, with book three estimated to come out later this year.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and I can't wait to dive deeper into the Alter universe.
Thank you to H. R. Trulove and RRBookTours for an ebook to read and review.
Normally when you read a story you have one world. This one has five. And they are confusing. Our main character Laura lives on earth and everyone thinks she's crazy hearing voices and seeing things. But she's not crazy, she just have five other versions of herself that jump through alternative realities.
Every world has some environment disaster, except earth. And Laura needs to save the other worlds.
Well this was waaaay to messy for my brain to follow. Al the worlds al the different Laura's. And did i get some understanding in the end... Nope...
I enjoyed this so much, I don't even know where to start! The plot pulls you in quickly and the characters are amazing. We get multiple POV, and with them, multiple worlds as backdrops. I was actually impressed by the amount of depth each character and world had, and wanted to explore them all more and get to know more about each character. The story moves along pretty swiftly, with plenty of action to keep you turning pages. While this doesn't end on a cliffhanger, I'd be lying if I said you aren't going to be dying for more set in a world where a multiverse exists. An excellent young adult book that even those readers who fall on the older end of the spectrum are sure to enjoy!
I was truly blown away by this book! I love how the author has created this spectacular world that revolves around these characters that will have me consume this book in a matter of days. Laura is an interesting character, especially trying to unearth the truth of her life. For a sci-fi fantasy book, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the author incorporated elements through the characters and the plot. Readers will be on the edge of their seats for this one if they love supernatural abilities, likable characters, and more! Be sure to add this to your TBR because I am so glad I read this one.
I truly loved this story, I flitted between reading the ebook and listening to the audio book - I must say the audio is narrated fantastically and it is the first long fantasy novel that has managed to keep my attention! The narrator is perfect with making each character distinguishable from the other. The novel in my opinion was just brilliant!
Alter starts with Laura in 2035, she's spent 10 years in clover centre - I believe it's a psychiatric hospital of sorts. She slips in and out of alternative worlds, after moving from Clover she goes to TIR thinking all of her problems will be sorted. However Clover Centre was the least of her problems. Lennox lives in the dark world, fighting against the crawlers for survival, she has a conscience named Wisdom. Lennox has her own problems, which as the story progresses may just be Laura's problems.
Alter is a novel that you need to pay attention to, it's not a breezey novel. The worlds colliding with each other is surprising and fantastically done. The way each character is interwoven with each other is surprising and really well done. Though adding new characters along the way can lead to some confusion. However that somehow doesn't distract from the story and to be honest, I felt like I was part of Laura navigating the world she was living in.
H.R. Truelove has created a wonderful and intriguing world and brought it to life in the most interesting way. I haven't read a book like this before and when I got to the ending I was left with a sense of shock - it honestly blew me away! I didn't see any of it coming, I think I'm in denial because I still don't believe it 😂
I can't wait to read the next book in this series because seriously! Wisdom!!

An interesting concept for a book. I really enjoyed the multiple points of views. The storyline was a bit hard to follow but once you got the hang of it the story was great.
