The same teenage drama from the PAN with a bit more spice and bonus scenes. Sign me up :)

After reading one of her other books, I bought this one and it did not disappoint! It's a bit different rating this because all three books are included in this one massive bounding, but it does not change how I felt about it other than my arms being more tired than usual. I laughed, cried, and smiled all within a few chapters. I do have the special adult edition and did not compare it to the YA version, but the sensitive topics that were dealt with were handled very well. That being said, the spicy scenes between Vivienne and Deacon were incredible.

In this Peter Pan based world, I think the hardest thing for me to picture is how they all look 18. Even Deacon's mom and especially his grandfather. I liked the balance between magic and biology throughout the book as it helps me feel like I can understand a bit more as to why HOOK is going after the PAN. It's something that is attainable for them to get by splicing into the DNA, not just a magical occurrence.

The way that Deacon changes to be better for Vivienne is something all of us hope for. My husband probably hates that I hold him up to the same standards as a fictional, incredibly good-looking, never-aging, and protective man... but here we are! Both of the main characters need to grow up, but they chose to do it together through some pretty crappy situations. You can relate to them as they change throughout the books and it creates a strong emotional pull. If something happened to the characters I was crying or laughing with them. Even though they're fictional, you can't help but hold out hope for them throughout. The long read is worth it for that amazing ending and it really comes full circle for the characters.

I’ve been anticipating reading this book for so long that I even bought the pretty edition with new content despite already owning The P.A.N in the regular edition. I only read amazing reviews of this one and was honestly expecting it to be one of my new favorite Peter Pan retellings ever. Spoiler alert: I hated it. Let me review the entire trilogy at once (and try do it spoiler free).

First of all, it’s not exactly a retelling. Our Peter Pan is canon in this modern universe, where there are people possessing a Nevergene called PANs, who have the ability to fly and never get old. We follow Vivienne along as she discovers her abilities as PAN and follows the very mysterious and very sexy Deacon to the safe place for all PANs, called Neverland. The first book has more of an academia setting as Vivienne learns to control her newly found powers. It does have a little bit of a sci-fi vibes with all the gadgets and science things the PANs commonly used, which was interesting.

The plot was sadly all over the place. During the three books, I feel like it kept changing genre every few chapters and it was very confusing. The mix of romance, action and sci-fi was awkward and didn’t have a nice flow at all. Also, I don’t really understand why it was cut into three books, because it definitely doesn’t read as 3 separate books. I’m just glad I binge read the three of them because there are so many plot holes from one book to the next, it would just be confusing if you paused after one book. So yeah, definitely recommend to read it as one big book with three different parts. I also think the story would have benefitted way more if it leaned more on the action and the actual “magical” system, but instead we got way too many chapters about Deacon and Vivienne’s back and forth relationship.

Because yes, let’s talk about the romance, since it was the main focus of the three books. It wasn’t good at all. It started interesting and fun enough, but they kept putting dumb and useless obstacles in their ways, and it didn’t make sense at all. Also you expect to make me believe that the resident fuckboy, who had sex with literally every girl they know, suddenly decide to settle down with Vivienne, and we don’t even know why ? I’m definitely not again a good “fuckboy turns into cute loveboy” trope, if it’s done well. But here, beside Deacon saying that he finds Vivienne physically attractive, we have no idea why he falls in love with her. And honestly, at the beginning especially, she’s not very interesting at all, so it’s definitely not obvious as the reader. But I guess they got good chemistry, but the back and forth was definitely not worth it. At one point around book 2 I decided to just start laughing everytime yet another girl was going in their way, there was some sort of miscommunication and Vivienne would have a huge jealousy crisis. Yeah, I laughed a lot. Other than that, it’s the most cliché relationship there could be, with all the tropes that makes me want to die inside (yes, of course, there is the unplanned p* trope in it).

“I wanted to love you forever,” he said with a laugh, touching his forehead against hers, “but I’ll settle for one lifetime.”

As for the characters, I have truly no idea what to think. I started liking Vivienne in book 1, then hated her in book 2 (she was absolutely horrible with Deacon in multiple scenes and we’re supposed to just move on?), and honestly book 3 was way too focused on her condition for her to even have a personality to like or dislike. And, all gods above, she has to be one of the dumbest main characters I’ve ever seen.

Contrary to Vivienne, I started the series by really hating Deacon, but he was actually the one character whose development I actually was very pleasantly surprised by. By the end of The HOOK, he had already had his redemption in my heart, and The CROC just confirmed it. He was true to himself while still ready to sacrifice everything for Vivienne, and being very mature and just overall good with the people surrounding them. And he was so funny! I honestly really love his character.

Deacon moved to her side and laced their fingers together. “You and me.”

Honestly, beside Peter (who I loved ! What a great representation of what “grown up” Peter should be), all the side characters were useless and unimportant. Emily has no point beside being The BFF Character, Max didn’t even appear in ONE scene of the last book, Ethan was at least complex but way too annoying, Lyle was just annoying, all of Deacon’s exes were the cliché of the mean girls at school and Nicola... My love, Nicola, what did the author have against you ? She was my absolute favorite character and they just decided to ruin her entirely in The CROC. Like they make them do very out of character actions, barely explain them at all and... that’s it ? I was SO frustrated with the way she was treated. Also, can I say the antagonist was boring as heck, and literally we had no explanation at all on why they were doing what they were doing?

I was really sad about the way they handled the whole Peter Pan thing. I actually liked the concept at first, but honestly beside explaining their powers, the fact it was related to Peter Pan wasn’t relevant at all. Yes, we had Peter as a character, which I liked, some of the Lost Boys, and some “subtle” jokes and hints to the story and its impact on our modern world, but they could have done SO MUCH MORE. It could have been a mirror to the original story in so many ways, and it would have been absolutely epic. But it just... isn’t it.

To say I’m disappointed is an understatement, but I still finished the entire trilogy in 10 days, so I guess if not good, it is at least entertaining. I kinda consumed it like I would consume a reality show, in a way. I saw that a book in the universe would be released this year, with Peter as the MC, and I know my goal in life is to read every Peter Pan retelling there is, but I honestly think I won’t survive reading a contemporary romance in this setting, so it definitely won’t be for me.

This has probably been favorite trilogy read so far this year! At least in this genre. It was such a pleasant surprise.

I did not read anything about this series prior to starting these books, so it took me a bit to wrap my head around where it was going… but once I did, it was a breath of fresh air for me. I finished all three books in two days 🫣

This was my first read by Jenny Hickman as well, and I look forward to reading the Myths of Airren books!
