Rate this book
Security experts Des and Ryan teamed up to form a business after they worked together on the kidnapping of a friend's daughter. Australian Des and former Marine Ryan have amazing chemistry together, and for one amazing night they acted on it. But then Des got cold feet, and the two of them have never connected again in that way.

Ryan thinks Des just isn't that into him. Des doesn't want to mess up his friendship with Ryan over something that may or may not ever come to pass. In the midst of all this frustration, they also have to deal with a security crisis with their respective best friends, Holden and Lachlan. When they have to band together to get their friends back, Ryan and Des are reminded why they work so well together. In this story two men with truly terrible communication skills; an outsized love for talking about food, eating, and then talking about food some more (seriously…so many descriptions of food in this book. From sushi to TexMex, it’s all rendered in loving detail); and a ton of physical and emotional chemistry dance around each other badly, figure stuff out, and then jet off to save the day when all hell breaks loose. I liked Ryan a lot: he’s fun, he’s honest, and he stands up for himself. He’s not a planner, but he’s careful nonetheless, and he’s kind and patient, sometimes beyond reason. Dez I am less fond of. He’s…fine, I guess? He does some selfish, unwittingly unkind things at the beginning of the story, but to his credit he works to fix them later. Unlike Ryan, he has a fairly rigid personality and he likes, needs even, to be in control at all times. While I liked that they worked to balance each other out, Dez on his own is not someone I’d want to spend a lot of time with. Too much intensity for too little fun. There’s a strong adventure subplot in the last part of the book, and I won’t spoil it (in part because spoilers are wrong, in part because I have only the vaguest idea what actually happened, as it’s more adrenaline and excitement than cogent explanation or meaningful exposition). All in all, this is an engrossing read with interesting characters and few dull moments, with the promise of a satisfying happily ever after for the protagonists. Well worth checking out.

I was so happy to get an ARC of this one after reading the first book because seriously: Ryan and Des have a lot of chemistry between them and I could not wait to get my hands on their story.

the book beginns with both of them in bed together ... but Des got scared and runs. and the first 60 percend are great to read how they get together again. although I have to say, I think it is a it unfair that everything depends on Des ... Ryan is an adult as well and could have opened his mouth too.

and seriously

so as you can see, I am totally Team Des. I loved his character - he is steady, dependable but also totally loyal and a real good guy. Ryan is also a great guy but sometimes he acts before he thinks things through. I do understand why these two clash during work ... but also why they work together so well.

the suspense part in the last third was a bit over the top for me. don't get me wrong, it was not bad but just not very realistic.

all in all, it was a good second book and cashed in the delicous chemistry between the two MCs. I really enjoyed it.

as always, I am happy that I got the opportunity to review this book but my opinion is my own

I really loved this book! This is Dez and Ryan's book and after book one it was one that I had been waiting for. I am probably in the minority in that i really liked Dez i mean i liked Ryan but like there was so much miscommunication between them and they definitely have very different personalities. But in the end they do work out all the kinks in their relationship and eventually get together. This book is fun, steamy, sweet and definitely was engaging enough to read in one read.I really liked the secondary characters. I definitely recommend this book and hope there is more to come in this series!

I enjoyed the 2nd book in this series as much as the first, and read it in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down. This is a wonderful action driven story, with likeable characters, romance, and a strong emphasis on family and friendship.

I loved Ryan and Des together, although there were times that I wanted to tell them to just sit down and talk! I liked how they both talked to their respective best friends, Holden and Lachlan, who gave out some solid advice!

I liked catching up with Holden, Lachlan, Chloe, and the others from the first book in the series, and also enjoyed meeting new characters. I’d love to see more of Darniell, and Chrissie is an interesting addition to the team.

The action/drama part of the story was a roller coaster read, and I liked that the bad guys bit off more than they could chew. I also liked that there were consequences to taking them down, and injuries that are going to take a while to recover from. The dogs are heroes as well, and play an important part in the story.

I hope the author hasn’t finished with these guys or this series as I’d love to read more.

We met them in Lachlan and Holden's story and I was totally waiting for their own stories and it is totally amazing!

Ryan is one of the best friends you can ever have! He can also be one of the best man you can ever have for a partner, not only in business but in life! Des learned that the hard way. Thinking that their business relationship will be jeopardize if they continue to hook-up, Des snucked out one night after a drinking date(?) with Ryan. But he was so wrong! It is a good thing that he realized everything before it was too late@

Ryan thought he dreamt it all, or it was his ultimate fantasy, that he and Des had this one amazing night. But Des never once mentioned it, so maybe he did dreamt it. Deciding to stay as far away as possible from Des was his only solution to his dilemma. But before he could do that, he has to buckle up, partner with Des again, in order to save their friends. It is a good thing then that Des realized he was being a fool to let Ryan go.

Congratulations Ms. B.A. Tortuga, I love this book, amazing!

Absolutely amazing!

I loved this book! The story of Dez and Ryan is filled with love, friends, family and a bit of danger and is an absolute pleasure to read. Dez and Ryan came together when their respective friends, Lachlan and Holden had their niece kidnapped. Now they run a security business together and spend time getting on each other’s nerves. But there is more to it under this surface. They gave in to the attraction between them once but the way Ryan makes Dez feel scares him off. Now the two have decided to try their luck at being a couple but life has a bit of a curve ball to throw their way first. Another of their chosen family is in danger and they will need to step up and help. It will leave Ryan injured and Dez will step in to take good care of his man. They all will get their happy ending, especially when Lachlan will allow them to put a bit more effort into keeping the family safe.

I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review

Intense adventure! Ryan and Dez are business partners. They had a one nighter and Dez panicked thinking their friendship and partnership were put at risk because of intimacy. After 18mos, Dez nearly convinces himself it never happened, it was all a dream. Ryan and Dez rolled around with unrequited love for each other and simmering lust for each other. They were muddling through when there was a traumatic significant emotional event that required an all hands on deck rescue. Do Ryan and Dez ever talk about their feelings? Do they relatively peacefully resolve the emotional event? It was good to hear how the found family were doing. Excellent characters. Nice pacing. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Boy did the bad guys here choose the wrong targets! Holden, Lachlan, Dez and Ryan, not a group you mess with. As in book one, the action/suspense plot is well developed and enables Dez and Ryan to learn things about themselves and as a couple. It contributes to the relationship aspects, it isn't just randomly tacked on for action. I also loved seeing Dez and Ryan get good advice from Holden and Lachlan about clearing the air between them and laying all their cards on the table.

I'd waited for Dez and Ryan's story for what seemed like an age, and it was pretty good, full of action, also we got to meet Lachlan, Holden and Chloe again. It was somewhat OTT in parts, but still an entertaining read. Dez and Ryan had the who lack of communication thing in spades, so I did want to smack them at times, and shout at them to talk to one another, god dammit. Still, an ok read, with some interesting sounding secondary characters.

Dex and Ryan’s story! Yay! I have been waiting for this ever since Trial by Fire. Nobody writes about cowboys and personal connections like BA Tortuga. I love her books! One thing I do love about her characters is that once they figure out what they want as far as their relationships, there is no hesitation. They go for it and they work it out. These two characters are on fire and the chemistry is off the charts. They just have to figure out how to finally make it work and talk about it. It was also great to revisit Lachlan, Holden and little Chloe who is now three. I would honestly read a book series about their security company.

Once again this author has created a gripping story with terrific characters. Dez and Ryan give us the romance, this time, while Lachlan, Holden and the team give us the thrills. Lots of excitement, just as in the previous book, a good romantic theme and a great conclusion. I love that you meet people along the way that you hope play into their own romantic storyline in the future. A terrific adventure. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

Some people just shouldn't go into business together.
But maybe, two can make it work, if they're strong enough to make their needs and desires known.
Especially if they're willing to go to the ends of the earth to save the other.
And share their favorite foods with them...and Ryan and Dez definitely do a lot of eating.
While working together to ensure the safety of those they consider friends.

Read and chuckle while an Australian and a Texas learn to compromise!
There is more than a 'language' difference to overcome.

Plus, you'll love the dogs!

I loved this story! It’s the second book in the Austex series from BA Tortuga. Dez and Ryan are business partners that are very attracted to each other, but both have fears of losing the friendship they have built. This author has an incredible ability to create, bring the characters to life and tell their stories. I’m excited to see where the series takes us next.

I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Business partners want to be actual partners, if they could ever talk about it.

Their job can be hi octane stressful, and the way Des keeps second guessing himself, and not communicating, means he’s never going to have Ry, even though they both want it. When Ry might leave, it forces the issue, in a good way. Then a dramatic and possibly fatal situation makes them both realise things have to drastically change, leading to a perfect HEA.

This book is mainly about Dez and Ryan who form a security company together. These two have great chemistry once they finally realize they each really like each other. When they get a call that their best friends are missing they rush down to figure out what happen. Another great story by this author and I highly recommend reading these 2 stories in order. So hope there's a book 3 in this series, I love all the characters. I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

Spicy

The arguing and bickering that Dez and Holden do is obviously foreplay and very spicy. The happy fun adult times are even better.

sweet romance but something is missing

Security Detail is one of Tortuga’s Cozy Romances and a side story to her last book, Trial By Fire.

That was a romance between a Texas rodeo cowboy and an Australian one, both from rich families with a stake in a child left a orphan when the parents, siblings of the main characters, died.

This book involves two men from the security team from the now married couple, who divide their time between the two countries and their two large holdings. Again one’s a Texan and one’s an Aussie.

The romance isn’t bad, in fact it’s sweet and hot. However, there’s other issues here that carry over from that first novel.

If you’re writing about characters from another country, especially one like Australian, then those characters need to behave and sound like they come from Australia. Even the certain part of Australia.

However, here there’s absolutely nothing to distinguish Ryan (Texan) from Dez (Aussie). Not Dez’s dialog, nothing in his casual chatter, or even the way a Aussie shortens certain words. There’s pages and pages, then a “Oi” gets thrown in the beginning of a sentence. And that’s it .

From a author who’s unbelievable talent lies in establishing the very heart and soul of a character as well as the culture of the land they walk on by just a regional throw away line, the lack of any color to the people here via the verbiage is disappointing.

Nothing especially says Texas either.

Could be anywhere West.

Then there’s the drama which is just , if I’m being kind, uncomplicated. It’s almost exactly the same as before. These are supposed to be extremely smart security professionals. Nothing here says that. So it’s very hard for a reader to engage in the storylines and main characters. Plus there’s no real resolution to the mystery behind the kidnapping. That’s left forgotten, and the reader unsatisfied with this aspect of the story. At least this reader.

Still, people like the intriguing Chrissie the tech guy make the book. You want more of him. And his background.

The conclusion is just odd. They basically decide to start a side office in Costa Rica because Ryan likes a beach and they needed a vacation. While that’s understandable, given past events, they hit their bosses and best friends with this out of the blue with no notice and with everything new , such as untried security just starting.

So again, no. A big SMH for this ending and really the entire story.

I like the cover .

To understand this book, you might want to read Trial By Fire beforehand.

3.5 A good follow up book to the first in this Texas and, not seen, Australia cowboy series. This is a standalone, the first doesn’t have to be read to understand the relationship between Des and Ryan. They are security experts who, respectively, each worked for one of the two MCs of the previous book. It was intimated in the previous book that Australian Des and former U.S. Marine Ryan had a growing thing between them, even while butting heads.
This book opens on the morning after their incendiary one night stand. There is major mistrust of what has happened and Des sneaks out on a sleeping Ryan.
Fast forward eighteen months later and they are working out of their security business office and completely ignoring what happened and never speaking about it, even though both are furiously thinking about it and wanting each other. Did not like this premise and would have stopped reading, but I could tell something was about to happen between them. That they were going to acknowledge the night together.
I’m going to fast forward in this review. They got together after too much talking, sex was hot, BA Tortuga does write a good detailed sex scene. Ryan and Des are planning a future when the phone rings-and, there is always a phone ringing in these stories, did not like that.
Another assault and kidnapping as happened in first book. I thought this was better written than the first book’s because I did not need or want the bad guy’s POV, as happened in the first book. It was wham bam action for a chapter or two, along with the aftermath.
The relationship between Des and Ryan is cemented by the knowledge that they almost lost each other.
There is a nice HEA ending.
All the usual author tropes of talking about events that have happened and reassurances, and a lot of meal eating. There was one trope that was missing, the constant calling of each other ‘honey’ or ‘man’. That was different.
I like these ‘go down easy’ type books and would read another. Especially if cover guy is as hot as this cowboy.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

What a lovely, exciting story!

Security Detail is the story of Ryan and Dex who we got to know in the first book in the series, Trial by Fire. In the end of that book we parted ways with them starting a security company together.

Dex and Ryan are total opposites. One is a planning type and the other the instinctive type. But that's why their company works so well!
But that's probably why the chemistry between them sizzles on hot temperatures too.
After one unplanned night together both of them retreats to their shell and never mentions it again. Dex out of fear of messing it up and loosing Ryan by the end, and Ryan out of pure insecurity of not being enough for the man he secretly loves.

Unfortuantely, we only see into Ryan's reasons a bit and got zilch why Dex is the way he is. I missed the context. And the story just jumps right into their lives again, sparing only a little time explaining.

I liked how they basically decided that they will try nontheless. Especially Dex, who got the kick he needed to go in the right direction after he heard Ryan pondering leaving.
Then, I liked how Lachlan and Holden were still major part of the story, along with little Chloe.
I liked the excitment of yet another kidnapping that hit way too close to home and the way they worked together so well.

Overall, it was a nice, quickpaced story. I am still not a 100% fan of the writing style. There's way to many dialogues and less description of background and storytelling. I keep loosing the thread of what's happening and who's speaking.

But I still enjoyed the book! It was a great mix of of love, angst and excitement!

Austin, TX. Dez and Ryan run their international Security business together, and they are super busy.
Dez, has long dark hair and hazel eyes,

a rough and tough Aussie.
Ryan, a former Marine, is strong, tough

and eager to help folks stay safe.
These two had a one night stand and never spoke of it again. Now, they both want to address the issues, but do not want to ruin their relationships as friends and business partners. They are walking a fine line.
Meanwhile they are seeing family and friends, and taking care of business.
There are some fires being set at Holden's ranch, which slowly escalate to a kidnapping. Dez and Ryan have just reignited their hot sexy times, and now will use every resource they have, the contacts, lines are drawn, lives are at stake.
People are missing, the attack was extremely violent, video surveillance is being scrutinized, hi-tech devices used, dogs are on the hunt, plus some good old fashioned tracking.
It's very exciting times, edge-of-your-seat thrills and chills.
The characters are loyal, vivid, with super hot men, sexy couples, and strong families. We get humor, sass, camaraderie and deep emotions.
This is a well written, fantastic story that has everything we like ! The epilogue is super good !
Loved it !
ENJOY !

Both Ryan and Dez appear as larger than life side characters in book one of this series (as Holden and Lachlan's best friends respectively). I was delighted when I saw that this installment is theirs, but it didn't quite reach the heights I hoped for.

There's a lot to like about the book. We have interesting main characters. I immediately liked Ryan (loving, loyal, boots on the ground/not afraid to get stuff done kinda guy, fun) and even though I couldn't warm to Dez as quickly (initially very closed off emotionally, rigid both in his ways of thinking and working) I did get there because he does actually feel things very deeply. I also really like that once Dez and Ryan get past their lack of communication they're all in with each other - the relationship feels solid because they do actually know each other pretty well after the years of working together. It's great to revisit Holden, Lachlan and (especially) Chloe, too...that little girl is a fantastic character. We meet Chris, Ryan's choice of tech consultant, as well - I hope he'll get his own book at some point. The action, too, is entertaining even if it does require a healthy suspension of disbelief.

However there are two main aspects of Security Detail that felt just a bit off for me. It's absolutely right to point out that it's a me thing, not a poor writing thing. Firstly, from the relationship perspective, the majority of the reconciliation element (after their first hook-up) revolves around the men's inability to communicate, or fear of real communication, which is a trope I think maybe I've just read too much of to really love it at the moment. The other issue for me is the structure. It felt to me almost like there are two separate books in one - Ryan and Dez sort themselves out and start their relationship proper by about halfway through...then we get 'the incident' (no spoilers here) which brings them back into Holden and Lachlan's world. Again, it's likely a me thing, but I would have preferred to read about the men navigating their relationship arc whilst investigating and resolving the incident.

So, overall, although for me Security Detail had the potential to be an awesome 5* read, it turned out to be an entertaining 3.5*.

An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.

Security Detail is a great addition to the AusTex series and I really enjoyed it. This story is well written, emotional, gritty, fast paced, has lots of action, the characters are amazing and I was fully engaged from the first page to the last. I have been looking forward to reading Ryan and Dez's story since we met them in the first book and I was not disappointed. They are perfect for each other but it takes them both a while to be able to actually talk to each other about their feelings. Their lack of communication is their biggest issue but they have smoking hot chemistry and a strong connection. I like how their relationship evolves once they get over themselves and see each other as more than just business partners. There is a lot going on in this book and I love how they work together when the worst happens to their friends. Both of them will do anything necessary to make sure that Holden and Lachlan are safe. I love the secondary characters, the ending is perfect and I can't wait to read the next book in this exciting series.

Security Detail is the 2nd book in B.A.Tortuga’s AusTex series and I loved it as much as the first. Highly recommend reading Trial by Fire before this story as it really does continue a storyline started in the first book. We had met Dez and Ryan when they worked together in Trial to bring back a missing person. Flashforward 3 yrs later and they are business partners both hiding feelings for each other. As they try to work out actually discussing their reciprocated feelings, drama strikes again and they need to pull out all the stops to help Lachlan and Holden yet again. I love the characters the author builds and it was fun catching up with previous favorites. I can’t wait to see who comes next in the series as they bring forward some more interesting individuals in this story as they did in the first. Yet again, the author's writing style just made me happy to read how she handled when you have to decide is the chance worth taking to put everything on the table when it comes to feelings. Keep the great stories coming!

Time for Dez and Ryan to get their act together! This is a fast-paced adventure that has these two business partner friends on an adventure to help their friends Lachlan and Holden. We are introduced to Dez and Ryan in Trial by Fire and we just know they are going to have a story! These two have a Huge communication issue! The author keeps a fun and upbeat writing style throughout their mission even though you want to just tell these two to really talk to each other! I definitely felt for Ryan as he really did not think Dez wanted him for all this time. I loved all the times they took to eat and how it was all so described in detail! Amusing to me for some reason! I wanted a TACO while reading myself! I received an ARC and I recommend starting with book one and keep on reading as each book revisits characters and expands on the story as whole!

Not Cowboys

I only got a third of the way through this book. Tortuga usually writes great cowboys. They have personality, and I spend the whole book looking forward to them working through their issues to get together.

In this book, it started off with some side characters with an interesting story. I feel like I missed a prequel book that would've made this one better. Maybe I read it and don't remember, having mixed it up with a similar story by a different author.

Then, it's just boring. These guys have one dimensional personalities. They like each other, but refuse to talk to each other like grown ups. After 80 pages of misunderstandings that aren't even funny,, I don't think they're compatible. There isn't even any action (between them or on the job) to liven things up.

Security Detail had a good balance of push and pull, as the characters circled each other and also became embroiled in helping their friends solve issues including a major security crisis... the story is a slow burn that hints of a past and heats up nicely. There is just enough humour to keep the book light, even with the stressful situations the characters find themselves in.

If you like a suspenseful romance with some guys who can solve other peoples problems better than their own, you'll enjoy Security Detail.

Security Detail is book 2 in the AusTex sub series of BA Tortuga's Cosy Cowboy Series. I struggled with some of the language and cadence in book 1, but I do recommend that this book be read in sequence with Trial By Fire...

Dex and Ryan - finally!

This the sequel to Trial by Fire. While this book can stand on its own, you get a bit more back story on the other colourful characters :)
I really enjoy BA Tortuga's characters - they seem so vibrant, so full of life and love. This is no different.
Ryan and Dex are work partners who are dancing around a one night stand (18 months before). There is pining on both sides, interspersed with good natured button-pushing at work. They eventually get their 'isht' together, fess up to feelings and are on the way to their HEA. Then disaster strikes - there's a kidnapping, that in itself is a good story! Loved the way they handled that situation.
Overall, an entertaining story.

I love BA Tortuga’s cowboy romances and after reading Trial By Fire I was so excited to read Security Detail. Ryan and Dez have incredible chemistry, and I couldn’t wait to read their story.

The romance is incredible and both men are really likable. They have a great dynamic together in both business and romance. I really enjoyed the way BA Tortuga explored their relationship and the way it grew throughout the story.

I did feel like the suspenseful part of the book was a little over the top and kind of took me out of the story. It wasn’t bad, just didn’t flow well from the romance for me. That’s why I gave it four stars. It’s still a great book and I definitely recommend it.

I did receive a free ARC of this book but that did not influence my review.

This is a standalone story but it follows on from events in Trial by Fire. I don't think it's s not completely necessary to have read the previous book as background information is provided but since I have read TbF it's hard to make an informed decision 🤔

The first 50% of this is Dez and Ryan dancing around each other, lots of snarling and hurt feelings rather than just talking to each other. Luckily this didn't last the whole book (cos I was ready to bash head by the time they got theirs out of their arses).

The second half of the book flew by in comparison. Lots of action and settling into a relationship which I enjoyed much more.

I wonder if there are anymore books planned in this series.
