Trioen

here is my post-single-glass-of-wine-stream-of-consciousness review:
the writing is clean and striking and its setting in the world of undergraduate academia in stockholm glows, but for a book called the trio this is stunningly one-sided. two of the titular group have alternating first person control over this storyline, and yet it feels like only one (thora) actually has any thoughts or feelings we can follow. though presented as the most mysterious one, she is the clearest in her needs and wants. hugo (the other narrator) is largely inexplicable, apart from a few forays into the exploration of what it means to fit in, how we change for each person we know and how impossible it feels to have an overarching "identity" in the face of that—each one startling in being both skillful and out of place. the third, august, gets very little page time and deserves even less.
this is not as major of a criticism as it sounds, because thora is an interesting enough character with sufficiently developed insights and moments of eloquently rendered wise internal monologue that she could carry this book on her own. so my real criticism is that we weren't given that.
i am being very mean because i had a glass of wine and, as i always do after one glass of wine, have discovered myself to be the smartest person in the world, but the truth is i enjoyed this immensely, and though it was not very close to the seeing-god feeling i get when i read sally rooney, it scratched the itch.
which, to be honest, is maybe the nicest thing i can say about any book right now.
on top of that, this had a lot to say about what we are to each other and what that means to ourselves, and was one of the most thematically self-aware books i've read in a while. and that's a treat!
bottom line: i had a good time.

I’ll keep this short. I found the whole thing a battle, and I gave up less than a quarter of the way in. In some ways it’s a pity as I think the book started well, with enough mystery surrounding the meeting of a man and a woman to draw me in. But then – for me, at least - it deteriorated into tedium, as descriptions of mundane events and dull interactions started to make me ever more reluctant to read on. I tried several times to re-engage, but I just couldn’t find anything to engage with. Sorry, but this one just didn’t float my boat.

It took a while for me to get into this book and it felt repetitive at the start but power through and then it definitely is a love child of so many great books and the atmosphere is one of a kind.

a reflective meditation on friendship, love, class, and the complexities of human relationships. it’s one of those novels that i’d describe as ‘quiet’, focusing on three main characters as they drift in and out of each other’s lives. it kind of feels like if sally rooney’s first two books ‘conversations with friends’ and ‘normal people’ had a lovechild, which is probably why i loved it so much.

Böcker jag läser i den här takten är svåra att ge annat än en fyra (eller mer). Att vilja plocka upp boken så ofta och läsa längre stunder är ett tecken på att det är en bra roman.
Trion är en bra roman. Den är genomarbetad och välskriven och kommer säkert få många läsare. Det handlar om de stora frågorna: att hitta sig själv och att ha relationer till andra. Dessutom är det en stockholmsskildring (med lite inslag från Paris, Berlin, New York) och boken går också att placera in i "akademiromangenren" då det kretsar mycket kring universitetslivet. Gillar man Sally Rooney, Lydia Sandgren eller Therese Bohman kommer det här vara trevlig läsning.
Åter till värdering. Det finns flera saker som gör att jag snarare ser det här som en bra roman än som en roman som jag tycker om. Jag har svårt att känna något för karaktärerna och tycker också att jag aldrig riktigt får lära känna dem. Varje karaktär står enkelt uttryckt för en eller två egenskaper: Hugo är sökande och osäker, Thora är distanserad och har svårt att lita på andra, August är konstnärsbohem och intellektuell. Bristen på engagemang för karaktärerna bottnar nog i att jag upplever dem som endimensionella. Det görs försök - särskilt kring Thora - att bredda karaktären men det når inte hela vägen fram.
Nästa kritiska punkt är språket. Generellt är språket vackert och välformulerat, men bildspråket har vissa brister. Det görs många liknelser som jag får läsa om flera gånger och ändå inte förstår hur de hamnade där. Ofta duggar de tätt på sidan vilket bryter flödet i texten. Satsradningar förekommer också en hel del och stör lite, men det tror jag färre bryr sig om.
Jag saknar humor och värme i boken. I baksidestexten står det att "Trion fångar den bitterljuva känslan av att vara ung [...] Och precis allt är på största allvar". Den känslan är också ett signum för Trion i sig själv. Det här är en seriös och allvarsam roman. Kanske är det en smaksak, men jag tror att den här seriositeten bidrar till att jag inte känner lika mycket för karaktärerna som om det fanns mer inslag av värme som bryter av mot allt det dystra. Trion påminner om Gun-Britt Sundströms Maken och Sandgrens Samlade verk som har en jämnare balans mellan allvar och humor, kyla och värme.

åh det är så mycket jag vill säga här. för det första är trion på tok för lik samlade verk men saknar dess självdistans och humor. karaktärerna är lite för platta, saknar dimension och författaren litar inte på läsarens förmåga att själv förstå deras egenskaper utifrån hur de hanterar situationer och är övertydlig. håller med victor malm i expressen att jag inte förstår syftet med jag-perspektivet från två olika karaktärer då bägges inre monolog låter exakt likadan och lika gärna hade kunnat skrivas i tredje person. många vackra formuleringar men de försvinner i att det finns lika många famlande. klassanalysen känns rätt banal och framtvingad. KAN inte heller låta bli att störa mig på att den utspelar sig i nutid, i en stad jag ibland rör mig i. de pluggar på universitet - litteratur, juridik och reklam, lyssnar på poddar, har svårt med bostadsmarknaden och alla är kära i alla. det känns som att jag rör mig i en alldeles för lik scen som den i boken och det gör att jag, personligen, känner mig missförstådd och förlöjligad. men det kanske är ett jag-problem.
trots allt detta kom jag ändå på mig själv med att sträckläsa boken under en dag, så något har den ju. ett slags irriterande sug.

I looked forward to reading this one but unfortunately it didn't hit the mark for me. It was well written but a very uninteresting novel. It was difficult to determine what actually brought the three together, or why they were even friends, as they didn't ever seem to have anything in common, or enjoy each others company. Told from the perspectives of Thora and Hugo, who are both very uninteresting characters. The book is based on the relationship between Hugo, Thora and August, which is light at best and the book never quite takes off.

Jag kände mig fientligt inställd till denna bok redan från de första sidorna, för att den var så extremt pretentiös. Som Samlade verk fast på anabola steroider. Först hoppades jag att den kanske skulle lugna ner sig lite ju mer jag läste, men ack icke. Här är det överklasstudenter som målar, som reser till Paris och London, och åmar sig i sin egen oförmåga att vara hela och konkreta karaktärer, och blir istället en del av den pretentiösa pastischen av kulturintresserade personer vilket styr hela min läsning av boken.
Det vackra språket ska dock noteras, varken är boken särskilt dåligt skriven eller svårläst, den är bara så urbota ointressant. Jag kunde verkligen inte fatta tycke för någon av karaktärerna. Kanske var August den som var mest "likable" av de tre, på något sätt framstod han som mer mänsklig än Thora och inte lika vek och opersonlig som Hugo. Synd då att man inte fick läsa något ur hans perspektiv.
Utöver det välformulerade språket är det är väl främst samspelet mellan de tre huvudkaraktärerna och deras komplexa relationer till varandra och sig själva som blir det mest intressanta i romanen, men samma relationsdramastoryline hade med enkelhet kunnat placeras i en annorlunda kontext och även en mer intressant kontext vilket hade gett författaren en möjlighet att skrapa bort en del av det mögel av pretention som brett ut sig över hela romanen, och lett till fler intressanta infallsvinklar och möjligheter att utforska karaktärernas känslospel. Om romanen har som syfte att primärt utforska karaktärernas känsloliv och relation till varandra så tycker jag att den misslyckas just för att de framstår lite som stereotyper. Jag har läst en miljon andra böcker med karaktären Thora i, jag behöver inte läsa ytterligare en!
På tal om Thora så tycker jag absolut att det ska slås ett slag för jobbiga/störiga/unlikeable tjejer och kvinnor inom litteraturen, de kan vara underbara att läsa om (bra exempel är Ottessa Moshfeghs Eileen och berättaren i My year of rest and relaxation). Det är inte den typen av karaktärsdrag eller porträtt som gör att jag inte riktigt kunde tycka om Thora, utan problemet ligger nog i att jag kände att hon inte var särskilt rund eller "utfylld". Det var svårt att lära känna henne, trots att hälften av romanen berättades ur hennes jagperspektiv. Ellerrrrr så är det bara good old kvinnohat. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(2.5) Really wanted to like this a lot more than I did. The jacket copy on the edition I read (not the same as the blurb here on Goodreads) deserves a lot of the blame (or do I mean credit?) for this: it talks up The Trio as an ‘instant classic’, ‘a love letter to those fevered blue nights and lemon-pale dawns of youth’, ‘bittersweet and euphoric’. Unfortunately, it can’t live up to that. This is an elegant, aloof novel that’s also a hell of a slog.
In fact, I struggled with The Trio from the start: it throws a truly bewildering amount of stuff at the reader – so many characters and complications – before there’s a single reason to care about any of it. Yet I felt there was enough potential in the premise to hold my attention. The prose is crisp and stylish, in a strong translation by Kira Josefsson (also the translator of Hanna Johansson’s excellent Antiquity). The story is basically about the relationship between three students – Hugo, Thora and August – which, over the course of a few years, becomes a loose sort of throuple. There’s a flimsy framing device which involves Hugo, years later, living in New York and estranged from Thora and August, receiving a visit from their now-adult daughter. But mainly, it’s about these three young people loving and hating and envying each other.
We switch between Thora and Hugo’s perspectives, but their voices sound very similar (often, I could only tell them apart based on who else was mentioned), and they both lack interiority in the same specific way: they’re unsure of who they are, yet both extremely aware of this, constantly thinking about how ‘my thoughts had no more substance and weight than the smoke smudging the sunset’ (Thora), or ‘I thought of [my] childhood as a shapeless mass of time’ (Hugo). This struck me as peculiar for people in their older teens and early twenties, which seems to me an age when you’re constantly adapting yourself without even thinking about it, while at the same time pretty fixed in particular beliefs and interests. I can’t quite get my head around the idea of feeling your own personality is amorphous while constantly thinking about how your own personality is amorphous. Much less two people in a relationship being exactly alike in this way! Doesn’t the act of thinking about yourself so much imply a sense of identity that would preclude this amount of uncertainty... I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. Regardless, the characters didn’t really work for me.
The Trio is a globetrotting story, moving from Stockholm to Berlin, London to New York, and occasionally there’s a lovely bit of description that captures something specific: a summer’s evening at the beach, a winter afternoon in a café. Yet the backdrops are largely flat, just as the ‘passion’ between Hugo, Thora and August lacks heat. It’s too tidy, there’s never anything unruly about any of it. It’s like looking at something trapped behind a thick layer of glass. This is by no means a bad or worthless book but it isn’t really one I can personally recommend.

El títol no deixa opció a imaginar un altre tema, però no us espereu un llibre eròtic. “Trio” és una història sobre la relació entre tres amics, però sobretot és un retrat generacional. És dolorós i a la vegada alleujador sentir-se tan identificada amb els sentiments dels personatges. Hi ha fragments que són per plorar i seguidament emmarcar-los per no oblidar que sempre hi haurà algú amb qui parlar i que t’entengui perquè, en el fons, som una generació marcada per una societat profundament individualista, per la lluita per descobrir la nostra identitat, per la por al rebuig, per les crisis econòmiques i pel pànic a un futur incert que no serà ni de bon tros com ens el van pintar. Ja sé que les comparacions són terribles i més si es compara amb un llibre tan odiat, però és que m’he sentit com em vaig sentir llegint “Gent normal”: acompanyada i reconfortada.
És una novel·la preciosa. Em quedo amb les descripcions del cel, que són recurrents al llarg de tota la novel·la, pels moments en què es parla de llengua i identitat –és una novel·la escrita en suec i que té lloc, principalment, a Estocolm– i la intimitat amb què es relaten les trobades entre els personatges. Johanna, gràcies per crear uns personatges plens de contradiccions que senzillament busquen fer-se un lloc al món i viure tranquils.

‘It feels like I have to enact violence upon myself to love him in a way he’s comfortable with,’ I finally said. ‘And I can’t. I care too much about myself to do that.’
This is one of those books where you'd look at the protagonists and scrunch up your nose and wonder out loud, how on earth can people be this immature and so very wrong in their convictions about each other and their relationship, but then again, I understand that if put in the same situation as them, I myself would behave the exact same way or even worse, so can't really complain about that, can I?
It is so beautifully written, but I wish we got some semblance of an epilogue at the end to sort things out a little better.

I absolutely loved this and it has become a new favourite, but at the same time I could see how people could hate it and have 0 time for it. It feels weirdly exposing somehow to admit how much I enjoyed it. If you don't like to read about privileged twenty somethings studying around Europe, overcomplicating their personal relationships with their fears of abandonment and lamenting at the state of the world, you'll get tired of this very quickly.
But despite it being a little pretentious, I found it strikingly beautiful. Maybe it's Hedman's writing style, or the few passages that perfectly articulated thoughts I have all the time (maybe they are cliche thoughts that everyone has? but somehow didn't feel cliche with Hedman's writing skills). Or maybe it's just that I'm a sucker for writing that explores the dynamic of a house party and the glances exchanged between strangers before they become important to each other. And I'll love any description of people biking through a city at dusk during summer.
The one thing that I felt let the book down was the framing of it -- it begins and ends in the future when the trio are older. I thought it was unnecessary and also ruined the believability of the story. I didn't believe that the characters would still be obsessed with each other so far in the future; for me part of what makes these intense relationships you have in your early 20s so special is that they exist only in that time and don't have anything to do with your later life. You might reminisce about them or feel pangs of nostalgia but I don't believe you'd still have the same emotions having had barely anything to do with one another a decade later. This would be a great book club book to discuss.

Johanna Hedman debuterar imposant med Trion som påminner om både Samlade verk och Normala människor. Liksom i Samlade verk finns här triangeldramat och universitetsstämningen. En heterosexuell relation i gungning liknar den i Normala människor. I Trion får jag det bästa från dessa, (enormt uppskattade böcker, som dock inte är mina favoriter), utvecklat till något storslaget. Jag tycker Johanna Hedman lyckas mycket bättre och att hajpen kring hennes debut är rimlig. Inte bara för att Trion är välskriven för det gäller alla tre verk, utan för att den i första hand handlar om klass. Klassamhällets övre skikt, alltså lägre medelklass och uppåt, kan utgöra en abstraktion svår att förhålla sig till, men Hedman lyckas sätta fingret på och visualisera hur det kan te sig.
”När han tänker på Tora och Frances ser han dem som skyddade av ett finmaskigt nät som dämpar varje fall. Vanligtvis syns inte trådarna, men ibland skimrar de till i form av problem och misstag som ändå aldrig kommer att komma dem inpå huden. Det har alltid provocerat honom. Samtidigt som han vill att de ska förbli tryggt omslutna av ett lager av frihetskapital.”
”Han” i citatet ovan är Hugo. Han representerar den lägre medelklassen med akademiska intressen, som måste arbeta samtidigt som han studerar. Som flyttat till Stockholm från Skåne och förstås har bekymmer med att hitta bostad men får genom sin nyfunna vän August hyra ett rum i en överklassvåning. Där finns dottern Thora (som senare kommer få dottern Frances).
Thora och August är bästa vänner sedan barndomen, de har också har sex med varandra. August är en varm, lojal och vänlig konstnärssjäl, Thora en sval och svåråtkomlig juridikstudent. Hugo blir femte hjulet som rullar bredvid deras tvåsamhet, men som också lyckas korsa deras väg för att vara intim med Thora. Hugos och Thoras relation är romanens egentliga kärna. Det blir en sugande dynamik när könsroller samverkar med klasshärkomst, här precis som i Normala människor, är tjejen rik och killen inte det.
Vi börjar i framtiden när Hugo är i övre medelåldern, för att sedan landa i ramberättelsen som handlar om trions år som unga vuxna. Texten växlar mellan Hugos och Thoras perspektiv i jag-form. De tillhör en generation som komplicerar saker mer än nödvändigt. Som har öppna relationer, som låter vänskap och kärlek flöda utan bestämda gränser. Som inte vill binda sig utan låter sig styras av frihetsanspråk.
Det finns en idé här som känns igen från Normala människor. Man är ung och har livet framför sig, man vill vara fri och ha alla dörrar öppna, men man vill inte vara ensam. Problemet är att den ekvationen går inte ihop. Människan kan aldrig bli fri från flockdjursmentaliteten. En människa är i och för sig i vissa avseenden alltid ensam, tycks Hedman mena. Enda sättet att vara så lite ensam som möjligt, är att vara i nära relation och nära relationer kräver löften och bundna band. Men att binda upp sig är att välja, att bestämma sig, att avstå något annat och att våga riskera att bli lämnad. Det kräver att man kan visa sig sårbar och att man kan sätta ord på vad man faktiskt känner, vill och önskar. Man måste stå ut med att känna sig löjlig ibland, kunna sätta sig in i den andres situation, be om ursäkt, kompromissa och vara generös med sin tid och energi.
Thora som representerar överklassen, är en diva. Hon är ängslig men spelar säker, stolt som låtsas vara tillåtande, sval som egentligen brinner inombords. I relation med henne får man vara beredd på en kraftmätning. Hon ber inte om hjälp (på grund av att hon är bortskämd). Vägrar visa sig svag (har inte tvingats göra det). Blir sur när hon inte står i centrum (är van med det). Hon tror sig ha ett klassperspektiv men nej nej. The blind self är stort, kognitiv dissonans uppstår. När hon efter att ha fått höra ett par sanningens ord av en vän blir sur och smäller igen dörren efter sig, tror hon att omgivningen uppfattar smällen som orsakat av korsdrag. Fast alla vet att Thora är sur igen. Det är tack vare greppet med två jag-berättare som vi får syn på glappet mellan jaget man uppfattar själv och som andra uppfattar en.
Men då är det varken bättre eller sämre för den psykiska hälsan att tillhöra medel- eller överklass, kan man kanske tro. Och ja visst, när man är ung är det svårt för alla. Men på olika sätt, av olika skäl och av olika dignitet. Framförallt tycks det krångla till sig när människor från olika klasser ska mötas. Hugo klarar inte att vara den större personen utan sätter i mötet med Thora hårt mot hårt.
Jag älskar den här stilistiskt tonsäkra berättelsen och karaktärerna Thora och Hugo är levande för mig. August däremot känns konstruerad och orealistisk, men det gör inte så mycket för han är bifigur. Hedman för sin berättelse framåt framförallt via dialog och gestaltning. Jag får lite skamkänslor över att jag gillar den här typen av djupgående analys av maktrelationer, som absolut kan uppfattas som navelskåderi, men på samma gång är vad som har pågått i mitt liv och nästan alla människors jag känner och har omkring mig. Det handlar inte om människans värsta strider, varken om död, svält, krig eller våld. Trion är ett psykologiskt drama som försöker bena ut vad som gör att vi blir som vi blir och dess fokus är priviligierade personer.
När jag läst klart måste jag omedelbart börja om från början igen.

I’ve been thinking lately that connecting with a book is not all that different from connecting with a new friend. Sometimes, a person comes into your life who is exuberant, transparent, and instantly likeable. Other times, it takes a little bit of work but once their effort is expended, the rewards are worth it.
The Trio is the second kind of “person.” The publisher calls the book “sophisticated and mature” and that is an apt description for it. It’s a book about – no surprise! – a trio of friends: Thora, a clever and wealthy young woman whose family has taken heat from its connections with arm dealers…August, a dreamy art school lad who has known her for what feels like forever, and Hugo, who is temporarily living with Thora’s parents in Stockholm as their lodger as he studies political science. Hugo tries to decipher the unwritten rules about “how things were done” and feels like an outsider – even more so when Thora and August connect. But years later, at the opening of the book, he receives an unexpected visit in New York – where he now lives from their now grown-up daughter.
Some of The Trio is not about what is said but what is left unsaid. Little things (a word, a look, an event) can trigger larger emotions. Silences occur for seemingly no reason. This is, at its core, a novel about relationships, particularly that of two distinctly different characters and complicated by a man who views himself as an outsider. esta señora tiene que estar harta de que la llamen la sally rooney sueca, pero es que.... es un poco así.
este libro tiene muchos elementos que me gustan de sally rooney, pero también he echado en falta otros elementos que me gustan de sally rooney. cuestión, que al terminar mi principal sensación era que me apetecía releerme algo de sally rooney.
he echado de menos más política, menos malentendidos, un poquito más de acción (y mira que soy la fan número uno de los Libros Donde No Pasa Nada)
lo he pasado bien leyéndolo, he reflexionado, he marcado muchas páginas, pero es un libro que no me ha consumido para nada los pensamientos cuando lo cerraba y lo dejaba en la mesita, y creo que lo olvidaré antes de lo que me gustaría. creo que tiene reflexiones bonitas y algunas temáticas chulas, pero no suficiente chicha que lo mantenga todo unido e hilado.
pd: mi personaje favorito de este trío era august y me ha dado mucha rabia que no tuviese capítulos él solo! me intrigaba un montón, quería saber más sobre su familia, su padre, su hermano, sus ilusiones, sus sueños, su día a día :(

"Fer-se adult es vendre's, però mentre hi hagi algú que percebi la ironia amb què es participa en el joc, és més fàcil mantenir algun tipus d'autoestima."
"Quan anava a casa d'amics, cuinàvem i després sèiem a menjar a la taula de la cuina i ens bevíem el vi que havíem comprat, llavors mirava al voltant, esperant que finalmente algú esclatés a riure per no poder aguantar més aquella comedia. Però ningú no reia. I així passaven els dies." Esto me parece un resumen tan bonito y concreto de los primeros años de universidad... pelos de punta.

Otroligt välskriven men lite för sval och distanserad för att gripa tag i mig. Förstod heller inte riktigt varför Thora och Hugo var ihop då de inte verkade gilla varandra så värst mycket.

3 Sterne weil mir die Sprache größtenteils gefallen hat und sich das Buch trotz der Aspekte, die mir nicht so gut gefallen haben, gut hat lesen lassen
Ich hab mich gefragt, ob ich vielleicht einfach aus meiner Sally Rooney „character driven“ Bücher Phase rausgewachsen bin, weil ich mich beim Lesen teils so gelangweilt habe und das Buch bei mir neben ein bisschen Frust auch nichts weiter hinterlassen hat.
Es gibt sehr viele Dynamiken und Beziehungen in dem Buch, die man hätte erforschen können, die sehr viel spannender gewesen wären als die zwischen Thora und Hugo (Thora und August oder Thora und ihre Eltern zB), die aber leider auf der Strecke liegen bleiben. I don’t gaaaaf über deren Beziehung ich weiß nicht wieso die sich so zueinander hingezogen fühlen, was genau der Konflikt izwischen denen ist und wieso sie es nicht schaffen, den zu klären. August, der dritte Protagonist, hat gar keine eigene Stimme und auch keine wirkliche Persönlichkeit (oder Fehler) neben chill guy mit Depressionen (was zwei mal angesprochen und sonst komplett ignoriert wird) who lights up a room. Drei verzweifelte Charaktere die sich in einer quasi Dreiecksbeziehung miteinander befinden und die ganze Zeit halbgare Konversationen über Politik führen ist schön und gut aber reicht nicht für einen guten Roman. Ich hätte mir wirklich einen tieferen Einblick in die Gefühle und Begründungen hinter dem Handeln und den ständigen Konfliktsituationen zwischen den Charakteren gewünscht, stattdessen weiß ich jetzt ganz genau wie die alle ihr Frühstück machen und dass die Autorin es liebt Vergleiche zu ziehen wo es nicht nötig gewesen wäre.

Probablemente tarde muchas semanas en superar este libro. Lo tengo casi todo subrayado pero no sabría resumir sobre qué trata, supongo que sobre la intimidad:

Hjalmar Söderberg möter Godard. Känner så klart instinktiv ömhet för alla böcker om fördjupningskurser i humaniora, men den här utkommer lite för tätt inpå Samlade verk.
Det är en proto-dark-academia-fantasi där studenter diskuterar postmodernism i skenet från stearinljus nedstuckna i vinflaskor och lampor draperade med röda sjalar. Karaktärerna betraktar varandra, konfronterar varandra. Hur ofta sker det i social interaktion, egentligen?
Tidvis vistas de i Montmartre-lägenheter med boktravar eller går på vernissager. I det där finns en del bra, t.ex. insikter vi fick när vi gav sig av för postgymnasiala vistelser på andra platser, i mitt fall också Paris. Att vi "undanhållits alternativ till hur livet kunde levas", d.v.s. exponerades för livsstilar och värderingar bortom den svenniga konformiteten. Exempelvis bo i en ministudio och jobba på ett obskyrt litet förlag eller vara dansare, bagare och heltidsaktivist.
Allt är diffust och vagt och riktningslöst, det är vackert, men alla prettolitterära klichéer irriterar. Det slås armar runt knäna under innerliga samtal på solvarma klippor. Det flätas in fingrar i varandras. Det stryks bort oändliga hårtestar ur den andres ansikte. Någon ser skyddslös ut. Någon ser med oseende ögon (har denne också ostyriga lockar och drömmer en drömlös sömn?). Det känns vingslag från den andres väsen... och om en tystnad uppstår imploderar den och bultar i tinningarna.
Ifall det inte framgår, helt ok Storytel-lyssning sena kvällar.

He pensado en este libro constantemente durante todo el tiempo que lo he estado leyendo (que ha sido bastante porque he retrasado terminarlo todo lo que he podido).
Ahora entiendo por qué han comparado tanto a la escritora con Sally Rooney: Johanna captura muy bien cosas muy comunes que pocas veces se consiguen capturar. Como la nostalgia (y la nostalgia adelantada), las contradicciones de las personas, lo difíciles que son las relaciones, la tristeza constante (incluso en los momentos más felices). Lo recomiendo muchísimo.

part 5 of actually picking up the books i own on my bookshelf (technically a reread, but i remembered 1% of it, so it counts)
you either die early or live long enough to become the villain. dying in this context is being hated upon the first read, and becoming a villain is disappointing upon the reread. the latter, unfortunately, counts here. i bought and read it during the first year of college, and all i remembered is that i enjoyed every second of it and that the missing perspective confused me. ask me about the plot? god knows. vibes. then, a few months ago, i saw that a tv show adaptation is coming in 2026, and i had to reread it. maybe i shouldn't have if i wanted to keep idolizing it. meh
you can't (and you don't even need to) write a large plot summary because the bulk of the book is just the waddling through life of these three stockholm students with vastly different backgrounds and complex (mis)understandings of themselves and each other. the story of august,thora and hugo is divided into three time periods during and surrounding their codependent college relationship and its collapse because every single one of them is a coward with communication skills of a rock, but more on that later. the most enjoyable part of reading this one was the prose. hedman, and kira josefsson (her translator), deserve all the praise because the writing style was a joy to read. she has this specific skill of capturing the moment, the atmosphere, through short sentences and offhand details. everyone who speaks about the nostalgic feel of the book is completely right. every single interaction reads like a summary of a long-gone moment that you can only relive through your imperfect memory and grieve its inherent imperfect nature. the book is like a collection of vignettes of their lives; we jump from one perspective to another, from north to south europe and from dingy apartments to opulent houses, but the melancholia and nostalgia never leave. 100/10 for the writing.
i've already mentioned (mis)understanding in this review as a major plot point. i'll go further now and say it's the most important plot point; what moves the book is the process of self-discovery and translation. not translation in the general sense, as in "here's a book in croatian and i want you to translate it to swedish." the translation here is the process of understanding: understanding yourself, others, yourself in the eyes of others, and then attempting to communicate those findings to yourself and others. to me, the whole trio (or the parts of it we do know) fail at the majority of this. that failure made for the best part of it all. the prose and theme collaborate to paint a picture of educated people in their twenties, lost and confused. you see them trying to communicate, to cross that bridge and repair the damage, but the silence is stronger in the end, and you can only be frustrated as the conversation is nipped in the bud and the scene finished, the translation failed. i won't deny that the constant push and pull isn't satisfying to everyone. some just want the characters to sit down and solve it all, but if you can manage to tune into that cycle, it becomes interesting.
the problem i reach now is the question of perspective, better said, focalisation. the book is called the trio, and the apparent main characters are a trio: hugo, thora and august. and yet, there are only two focalizers; the story is told through the interchanging voices of thora and hugo, while all we know about august is the tiny bits we get from their narration. he is like a mystical creature forgotten by the narrative, and everything suffers because of it. i am aware that we can explain this narrative choice simply as just another way of hammering in the translation theme; august is not given a voice, and we can only trust the information given by others to try and understand him. the thing is, others don't even know him well. the main example of that is the fact that hugo, one of his closest friends, doesn't know he's struggling with his mental health. what we do know about him is a series of idealized pictures. in other words, lies. THAT can be genius, but, personally, here it didn't manage to be it. trio reads like a duo and their occasional companion. the sidelining of august wouldn't be a problem if the book felt egalitarian in its description of their relationships. ok, let's accept the aforementioned explanation; he's the voiceless link. ok. then shift the focus from hugo-thora to august-hugo-thora and weave in more moments of him being pushed aside. either that, or just do three focalisers and lose the voiceless moment. either would've been more satisfying than this mess that reads like a drama about thora and hugo and their therapist, august. it bothered me the first time i read it, and now it bothers me even more.
another thing, this one purely personal. the political side of this is shallower than a street puddle. again, it does fit in the narrative, i'll give it that. they're all obsessed with each other and politics feels just like a game that they won't and don't need to play, especially the ultra-rich thora, but but but...it makes for an unsatisfying read. maybe i am shooting myself in the foot here. maybe it's just another situation where the conversation ends because of their inability to take it forward. maybe i'm criticizing the very same thing i applauded before. maybe. i'll forgive half of it, bt the other half ill hold guilty. thora is the most interesting here; the heir of a wealthy family who's trying to set herself up in life alone while barely acknowledging the privilege she lives in. those brief moments when she touches upon it were one of the bright spots of the whole work. if only they weren't so far and few, mixed between silly mentions of politics. the students are playing at life and playing at serious business. the points do connect, but it was just dealt with in an unsatisfying way to me.
everything above won't stop me from recommending it, because i do think that people can and do find beauty in it, myself included. i only wish certain things had turned out differently, but at the end of it all, the most interesting books are the ones you can both criticise and admire in the same breath.

Var ju ändå något i språket som emellanåt kittlade mig, vissa formuleringar som jag kan ta med mig. Men ärligttalat känns det som författaren glömde bort storyn mot slutet & jag kände inte att Del 3 gav något som helst avslut på Del 1. Det kändes taffligt istället för vackert - något som det blev tydligt att författaren ville att jag skulle känna.
Men detta är en roman om ingenting. Om att plugga & bo i Stockholm. Har man läst en roman av dessa stockholmsförfattare tror jag snart man läst alla för ingen kommer på något nytt. Det är droger & nyliberalism & bohemiska konstnärer & HBTQI personer som kryddar historien lite.
Känns helt galet att denna roman var nominerad i samma kategori som Eufori som i min mening var en otroligt stark läsupplevelse.

Sally Rooney’in yazım tarzıyla oldukça benzetiliyor (ki yer yer ben de Normal İnsanlar’ı anımsadım) ancak günümüzü yazmanın benzerliği olarak görüyorum ben bunu. Zamanın ruhunu yakalamak gibi. İlişkilerin karmaşıklığı,kozmopolit yapılar, her şeyin/ her duygunun çabuk tüketilmesi artık yeni gerçekliğimiz. Bunlardan nasıl kaçamıyorsak ve tam da ortasında yer alıyorsak, edebiyata yansımalarını da göreceğiz, sinemaya da, müziğe de.. Belki de yeni klasiklerimiz yüzeysel gibi görünen, basitlikten beslenen ama acımasız gerçekliklerle örtülü bu parçalar olacak..

Miscommunication, misunderstanding and full of the most middle class characters, the The Trio is certainly going to be yet another “marmite” type of book.
It is a slow and meandering novel, primarily focusing on exploring the dynamics between the most intimate (nay incestuous?) of friendships. Underpinned (and undone?) by sociopolitical commentary, class, country and cultural upbringing.
Initially I was very much drawn into the trios intimate -almost suffocating nature. Their varying attitudes, opinions and behaviours towards not just each other, but themselves and the world around them was intoxicatingly written.
However, from about midway onwards, these initial glimpses soon began to wain. And the writing become more just a mere recounting of pretty meaningless and mundane drivel.
For a book that’s 320 pages long, I do feel as though the characters; their lives both individually and as a “trio”, could’ve been developed a whole lot more.
Not a bad book per say, just probably more of a “read between the lines”,make up your own conclusion, kinda vibe.
