When the vampire Lucardo, a royal member of the Court of Night, fell in love with a 61-year-old mortal named Edmund Fiedler, their passion grew legendary before Lucardo’s practical father intervened. After a furious search, Lucardo finally reunited with his aging lover, but was it too late?
Terminally ill with Shifter’s Lung, filling his chest with blood and drowning him from the inside, Ed has finally collapsed. But fiery Lucardo is having none of it; in a panic he has gone against Ed’s wishes, turning him over to the progenitor and god of his kind, the dreaded Silent Lord, in a last-ditch effort to escape death. Will Ed embrace the dark gift, living forever with his beloved? And what will it mean, surrendering himself to this uncaring, malevolent force that lives for nothing but tormenting those that call it “father?”
An erotic graphic novel that redefines a genre, this highly anticipated third installment of the Letters for Lucardo series takes a dark and foreboding turn in a captivating saga of immortal love.
Otava Heikkilä is a comic artist born in 1990 in Finland. His works include the webcomic "Judecca", the short erotic comic "A Winged Man Flew into the Shed" in the "My Monster Boyfriend" anthology, and the erotic graphic novel series "Letters for Lucardo".
He's interested in stories about romance, creating soft spaces in rough lives, communication being an essential part of relationships and society, and the thought that nobody is ever too old or too unskilled to start learning something new.
Oh my! The life or death (and undeath!) drama gets so intense the main characters almost forget to have sex.
The next volume is the conclusion, and I'll definitely be back for it. I only wish it had a scheduled release date, but three long years after this volume went into print the status for Book 4 is "pending." Argh!
This volume really embraces the horror elements that were hinted at in the first two volumes of Letters for Lucardo. It is much darker in tone, but I really enjoyed its exploration of the vampire myth as something that is truly horrifying in origin. I can't wait to see how the story concludes, and I know I'll be going back and re-reading this volume many times. The art, as always, is incredible - Otava Heikkila knows how to convey dread, fear, and terror in ways that are gripping and moving. The few moments of peace between our two protagonists were all the more aching for the darkness that surrounds them.
So Ed is sick. Lucardo is freaking out. I'm crying my eyes out 😭
Lucardo does what he can/thinks is right to save Ed but there are repercussions that were not thought through. Ed is struggling and it's so damn sad. There is also a potential relationship between Ed and someone unexpected... I'm shaking. I took my time reading this because WHERE DAFUQ IS BOOK 4?! 😤 I MUST KNOW HOW THIS ENDS!!
The angst is high here, but that’s good. I love angst! Appropriately, there’s only one sex scene, viewing what Ed’s going through. I do still wish it was longer and the plot more drawn out.
I hope the final volume comes out soon, but even if it doesn’t, this series would be a super fast reread to prepare whenever it does release.
Letters for Lucardo is such an interesting series and I'm actually from and still live in the same city as Heikkilä, haha! I love the intensity of the comic and how amazing the sex scenes are. In this third part Edmund is changing to become one of the night creatures. It just wasn't his decision. Edmund is terminally ill and Lucardo cannot lose his lover, so he sacrifices the man for the scary Silent Lord in order to save his beloved and make him live forever. The whole thing is very bittersweet and especially how Edmund tries to handle the situation. The nightmares and changes are haunting and oddly small at the same time, it works well. Somehow everything seems to change their relationship too and finding new ways to be is touchingly hard. I loved Edmund's anxiety and dread, you feel them as a reader.
The art looks nice and sweetly soft somehow. I do like the fact that this is black and white, since it's like the story sucks out the color. Perhaps this would work better when read in a single issue, since the transitions between books aren't perfectly smooth. I'd love to see this in hardbound. The sex scenes are awesome though and the angles of view are out of this world. So brave and sexily inviting!
I knew from reading other reviews that this book was going to be darker, but I'm not sure I was prepared for how much I was going to like it.
When last left off with our boys, Ed was dying from shifter's lung, and Luc left him in the presence of the ominous "Silent Lord" in the hope he would "save him". (I put that parenthesis because none of the characters in this story actually believe they have been changed for the better. They are all living in the shadow of a monster.)
We do finally meet this "god" of the Night Court and...
*deep breath* damn, holy motherfucking shit is the Silent Lord, horrifying in the most unique, subtle, and best way. I got LITERAL SHIVERS multiple times reading this book. Those parts where you audibly gasp and say, "WOAH" or "oooh NO." I can't remember the last time I've read a graphic novel that made me do that. (Granted, horror is not usually my go-to genre, I was here for the romance and just got pleasantly surprised by the mix of tenderness and macabre.) I think this volume might actually give me nightmares.
Speaking of our couple, I really can't get over how well Lucardo and Edmund fit together. We still get the sweet moments in this volume that we had in one and two. But something about this felt even more real. Maybe it's because now both of them have experienced trauma and are helping eachother through it. I thought I would be angry at Luc for offering his lover up in desperation to heal him, but the way Otava handles his characters is just phenomenal, I forgave him almost immediately.
We also get a glimpse into a few other side characters, which made me so happy. Otava doesn't sugarcoat anything about those characters. They have flaws and have learned to cope or have embraced who they are without a care. There is also a subtlety in the art that helps the reader to feel like they are deep within the story and more connected to each person in it. I'm mainly referring to small glances, body language, expressions, word bubbles that are slightly out of frame that give so much extra care to the storytelling.
Of the three this was my favorite, it made me FEEL so much, and I devoured it so quickly that I immediately read through it a second time just to savor all the moments that woke up my emotions. Incredible art and story. Bravo. I can't wait for the conclusion in volume 4.
Edmund goes through a very difficult transition, but through that we learn about the Silent Lord's history, about Ibauld's history, and how the Night Court was created. It's a fascinating, sad story. We learn more about the nurse Geza and his husband Sorin, which is very interesting. Ibauld has such a tragic story - and the Silent Lord is so interesting - that I'm glad we had the slight deviation from the main plot to see both in good detail.
I only wish we understood this whole letter situation - every book starts at some point in the future, where Ed is writing letters to Lucardo, so they're obviously not together at this point, because Ed doesn't know where Lucardo is. Why are they apart? Is it temporary? Does that mean Ibauld is back in the forest (effectively dead) and Lucardo has taken over the Night Court? Or has being around the Night Court and the Silent Lord been so taxing on Ed that he's been forced to leave Lucardo? Or, has Ed somehow *not* completed his transition, so he's back to being human, and that's why he can no longer be part of the Night Court?
I. HAVE. SO. MANY. QUESTIONS! The most important being - when will we see a release date for Volume 4!
Hurm. Read book 1 and then this which is book 3 and did not read book 2. Oops. The vol runs up against the same problem I see in a lot of erotica -- do you want to write a s*xy p*rn story? Do you want to write a story with plot and really care about the plot? How do you balance the two? This book solves it by having a book devoid of sex, until the last bit. And I won't say it's tacked on, b/c it isn't, but it is in some ways detached from the rest of the story.
A lot of slay imagery in here. Some great stuff. I think I liked it more than #1?
How do you motivate readers to read your work when they want s*x? How do you write a story with s*x but not about s*x but is about s*x at the same time?

One of my most anticipated reads for 2023, Letters for Lucardo continues to be a great book. This volume isn't quite as strong as the other as some of the stakes have changed in the ongoing tension of immortal life vs. human life and what it means to be old vs. what it means to age.
Ed and Lucardo have grown as characters and in their love for each other. This had different relationship stakes and internal movement than the first two volumes, which I appreciated.
Heikkilä has done a fabulous job at further filling out the world of the Night Court and introducing us to immortal characters who aren't just stuffy upper-class snobs.
Didn’t realize this was Book 3. It certainly made the story more mysterious! Gay vampires, or the monster as a metaphor for social outcasts, are not new, but this was still interesting and had a diverse cast, which is different. The way the Silent Lord is drawn and how the space of his mouth is extended to fit the words is quite creepy! There is one X-rated love scene in here that seemed a bit gratuitous, although maybe if I had actually read this series in order, I would have some sort of attachment to the characters.
About fifty pages more than the other books this story flies by and is packed with so many added details. This third volume really has made the world of this story feel complete and rich, and absolutely horrifying! I think, because we spend so much time on Ed’s transformation, and his dealing with these changes, the book is more expressionistic and action-forward which despite its length probably took me less time to finish than the first two volumes.
Let’s just say, I don’t think we’re on track for a happy ending for anyone in this series. And I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
I just love this series. There’s something carnal and beautiful about the love story, and there is a newly tragic depth revealed about the nature of the night court. It defies so many genre expectations that it’s hard to keep track of. What appear to be vampires on the surface are something much weirder and far more interesting. It’s eroticism is equal parts titillating, heartfelt, and well-placed within the story. I’m very excited about it concluding with the next volume, and looking forward to re-reading the whole thing many times.
Things are darkest before dawn. Ed’s sickness is more severe than realised (as we find out right at the end of the second book) and Lucardo makes desperate decisions. This leads to more world building including the horrifying Silent Lord. The illustrations were excellent here because I found them hard to look at, they made me want to look away like the characters do.
Other characters get their chance to shine here whilst Ed becomes a bit more passive (for understandable reasons). The expansion of the world is good, my only sadness is there is no expected date of release for the final book!
This gets 5 stars for worldbuilding (finally, we get the answers to so many questions) but a 2.5 for smut (seriously, why is this series getting less and less smutty the longer it goes? At this rate there won’t be any smut in the last book 😭), hence the 4 star rating. I’m very upset that the 4th book hasn’t been published and there isn’t even an ETA on it, because THAT ENDING… dead. I need answers now.
This was a wonderful addition to this series! It continues to be a timeless love story. But the struggle with being immortal and having that choice taken away is a big focus. The artwork was once again beautiful and adds so much to the story! I can't wait to read the final book in this series!
Geez....I have no idea how to feel about this one. While I loved the deep dive into what haunts the family, the path to get there is harsh. I couldn't put the book down the moment I started reading it, though. I can't wait for the conclusion.
This volume built on the story quite a bit, and while it was a different, darker tone than the last two, I loved it. I can't wait to see how the story concludes in volume 4!
