Don Coldsmith, one of the best selling novelists of the Native American experience, reintroduces this historical western collection.
Famous for his proficiency in all the weapons in the People's arsenal, Strong Bow is eager to prove his skill by capturing his people's highest glory – dying while battling Spanish imperialism.
From there, the action continues as one young woman is abducted, a quest to the south turns deadly, and a romance that’s fueled by jealousy. Loyalty to the tribe is the most important thing to the People, even if it means breaking the law…

The stories continue as we the history of the Elk Dog People, their successes and failures!
As we read through the volumes of this series, we meet and enjoy the stories of each generation. We also learn of their triumphs, and of course, it would not be a complete story if we did not learn about the disasters. In the first volume, we learn about “Heads Off,” a Spaniard that fell in love with a beautiful woman and gave up his life in Spain to stay and love her. He became one of the most respected of the Elk Dog Peoples leaders, giving them their first horses. As we continue reading, we visit each generation, learning more about the Elk Dag People. The name represents the horses that became an intricate part of their lives and continued throughout their history. It is interesting to learn their ways and how they learn to use the implements of others to increase their enjoyment of life, yet remain faithful to the ways of their culture. Here we are in volume four, and it takes us by storm, learning some of the people travel far South to learn other ways, looking for a better place to winter. But we learn what a disaster that turned out to be. Finally, we learn the reasons behind the Elk Dog people's respect for the bear. Why they will not kill or eat the bear but how one bear broke the arrangement and stalked the people. And finally, we learn how the people were terrific, as they live on and learn to adapt. Always conscious of what the past has taught them.

I have enjoyed this saga so very much. I understand that this is fictional but it’s so believable and wonderfully written. It’s amazing how I can become so riveted by this author.
