It had taken five years for Detective Kallie Redman to become emotionally and psychologically available after her cop-husband devastated their marriage and her career. The Hope City Police Department offered her a new beginning and over a thousand miles between her old life and her new. Being partnered with Brock King didn’t hurt either. He was smart, generous—and too sexy for words.
Placed under a microscope and intense pressure to solve a high-profile murder, homicide detective Brock King didn't need or want a new partner. He managed his stress-filled life via sleep deprivation, a metabolism fueled by sugar and caffeine, and an all-consuming passion for his job. He had little time for anything else—and he was soul-tired of that wash-rinse-dry-repeat cycle. He’d written off finding a woman who’d put up with the odd hours, physical danger, and emotional stress of his job—until Kallie Redman. The woman was wicked sharp, ran on caffeine, and rocked one smoking hot body.
Unfortunately, the profession they chose had a way of grinding people into the ground, and the high-profile nature of this murder case guaranteed scrutiny from the press, the victim's extremely wealthy family, and politicians at the highest levels. He’d begun to question if he’d have a job at the end––or a shot at a life with Kallie.
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author, Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class consisting of 13 students (yes that is thirteen, eleven girls and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes cold...don't judge.)
Brock is book one in Kris Michaels's new series Hope City. Detective Brock King caught the case of the murder of a wealthy member of Hope City's elite society because his partner had been transferred to the FBI and needed a new partner. Detective Kallie Redman was happy to accept the new opportunity with the Hope City Police Department to help Detective Brock King after her ex-husband destroyed her career in the Houston Police Department. Will Detective Brock King accept his new partner, and will they discover the killer? The readers of Brock will continue to follow Detective Kallie Redman and Detective Brock King's investigation to find out what happens.
Reading Brock, I am starting to understand how politics can affect law enforcement and Police Commissioners. I have read several books by Kris Michaels, and I enjoy her writing style, the way she portrays her characters and their interactions with each other. Brock keeps up my tradition with her books, which ensure that I engage with the story and the characters from the first page. Brook was well-written and researched. I like Kris Michaels's description of Brook's settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
Book one in the Hope City Series is Brock. Though he loves his job, Brock King has begun to despair of ever finding a woman who could deal with the rigors of his job as a Hope City homicide detective. That is until he is temporarily partnered with Detective Kallie Redman.
“Brock leaned down and kissed her cheek quickly. "Boundaries, Detective King." "Nobody was watching, Detective Redman." He wrapped his arms around her. "Well in that case, kiss me like you mean it, and then let's go get us a murderer."
Together Brock and Kallie navigate a very high profile case, the stresses of their dangerous job and the unexpected connection they feel for each other. This is my first book by Kris Michaels and I loved her storytelling. Lots of suspense, and romance without unnecessary angst or drama. -5 Stars-
I loved this book more than I thought I would when I first started reading it! Brock is a homicide detective, who eats, breathes and sleeps his job, to the point where he is working more than spending time at home or even sleeping. His partner gets reassigned so he's stuck with the task of getting a new temporary partner, who happens to be Kallie. Kallie is a damn good cop and detective, and has had some things in her past shake her to her core and gone through some hard stuff, but she doesn't let that stop her from following her dreams and sticking to her guns. When she meets Brock and they start working together, they both quickly realize that this new partnership is going to be great, as they work very well together. They both start to feel a little mutual attraction and we are then off to the races. I enjoyed this book because Brock and Kallie both were very adult like and professional about dating and didn't want it to interfere with their work, but they knew they both wanted to try to have a relationship. They were both really strong characters, who both really grew, and they brought out the best in each other. I love that Kallie is such a strong female character, who doesn't back down and always stands her ground and stands behind her morals. Kallie finally confides in Brock about her crazy ex-husband, so not only do they need to try and solve a high profile murder together, they both have to worry about the ex-husband coming to town to harm Kallie, which Brock won't let happen. Buckle up as you go for one hell of a ride!
If you like a little mystery and suspense, with passion and romance, this is the book for you. I enjoyed the 'double' storyline that was going on throughout the book as Kallie and Brock had to solve a murder and who did it, but also what Kallie's ex-husband's next move was going to be.
Originally read as part of Hope City Duet. Brock - a brilliant, gritty suspense thriller that had me hooked and guessing from the start. Brock King is a dedicated homicide detective, who operates on too little sleep, too much caffeine & a non existent personal life. He’s also sexy & smart, doesn’t always make nice but he does get the job done. Temporarily partnered with equally dedicated Detective Kallie Redman to solve a high profile murder, Brock soon starts to wonder if theirs can be more than just a working relationship. Kallie has plenty of ghosts from her past including an ex-cop, ex-husband who left her personal & professional life in tatters but she survived, grew stronger & is now returning to the job she excelled at. Smart, sexy & honest Kallie’s addiction to caffeine rivals Brock’s & they instantly gel as both work partners & on a much more personal level. As they follow the evidence & join the dots to solve the case can these two perfectly imperfect characters find their own HEA? It was a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed, plenty of suspense, an intriguing twisting turning plot (I couldn’t guess), heat, laughter & wonderful characters including Brock’s fabulous mother with the added bonus of a link to Guardian - perfect!
Hope City is a fantastic start to a new series by Kris Michaels and Maryann Jordan. I originally purchased the Hope City Duet but see that they’ve been separated, so I’m attaching my review as I loved this series and would recommend to anyone who loves romance suspense with a dash of action and alpha heroes and strong female leads❣️
Kris is one of my automatic one click authors...I don’t need to read a blurb or even see her covers, I just know I’m going to love the story no matter what🤩 Brock’s story overlaps slightly with Sean’s story but the way it’s put together it flows seamlessly😁
Brock is called to a warehouse fire when a body gets discovered and crosses paths with Sean while he’s investigating the fire and whether or not it should be included in a string of arsons across the City😱Brock partners up with Kallie to investigate this high profile murder and they soon find themselves in a relationship while Kallie tries to forget her ex and her past.
Brock King is a giant of a good man. He is an excellent detective for the Hope City police force. When his regular partner is loaned out to the Feds he gets a temporary partner, just as he catches the biggest murder investigation of his career. Kellie Redmond is rebuilding her career as a detective . She's been hired by Hope City PD and immediately assigned to partner with Brock. They are both smart, astute and professional investigators. Soon it is clear they have a strong personal attraction to each other. They must now make their way through a terribly high profile murder investigation, Kallie's stalking by a violent and deranged ex husband and personal feelings that must be controlled during their new, budding relationship. Well plotted, written and executed this book is fascinating and entertaining. Kept me mesmerized with great characters and lively plot twists.
This is such a great read. Brock and his partner are investigating the murder of of a high profile rich man when his partner is pull to help on a case that he had previously been undercover on. Brock is temporarily partnered with a beautiful newcomer to the department. Callie is determined to start her life over and put her ex husband firmly in the past. She had testified against him after she witnessed him shooting a woman in the back during a raid to wrap up his undercover assignment. Brock and Kallie work the case and can’t fight the attraction they have. She starts getting phone calls and texts from her ex when he gets paroled and the ex is escalating. This book has lots of suspects, lots of investigating, lots of coffee, not much sleep, lots of family, lots of steam and love. This is a great start to the Hope City series and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
When millionaire favored founding son is murdered Det. Brock King was hoping he could work the high-profile case alone or wouldn’t have to keep it in case his partner was being pulled by the Fibbies. Brock has to keep the case, his partner’s pulled and new hire, Detective Kallie Redman is his temporary, sexy and very distracting partner who comes with Rich, an ugly set of luggage, an ex-con/-cop/-husband but that doesn’t stop Brock and Kallie from taking a chance on each other.
The rich cause confusion here with convoluted romances, power struggles, too much money and way too many little people leaving a cauldron full of suspects and elusive motives. Though Kallie’s loving the job and all that comes with her new life here, her luggage ups his game from threatening to make her life miserable to ensuring she knew he knew exactly where she was and had reached the toying with her stage. I guess he didn’t know Brock was related to THOSE Kings! Rating: 4.25stars
No plot spoilers No potential triggers There are no grammatical or editorial errors. The characterisation is almost spot on, but there is something missing that falls just short of making the characters truly engaging. They were both well written, with enough individuality to draw you in, but the connection wasn't quite there. The plotline is great, with enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages. There are some sex scenes and plenty of swearing, and my only criticism would be that the book was slow at times and I admit I skipped some paragraphs when it felt repetitive. I don't know if I will continue with the series, given that the next book is by a different author I will probably give it a try. Kris Michaels is on my automatic purchase list, but on this occasion I'm undecided about the series.
## Oh how I loved this book. It was fun following the clues along with the detectives of this murder investigation. Interrogating suspects, interviewing witnesses, waiting for forensic reports, etc... right up my alley. But what really shined in this book was the romance. Oh don't get me wrong...the romance did NOT overshadow the crime drama. It ran along side it. HOWEVER, the relationship between Brock & Kallie was special. They were both honest and up front with each other. There was no hiding the truth at any time and no huge misunderstanding. Not to mention their chemistry was off the charts. I loved their banter and their passion for their jobs and each other. I wish more authors would write heroines that are smart, capable & beautiful. Kallie was just plain fabulous. Will definitely read again.
Brock King is a hot, smart & sexy homicide detective with the Hope City PD. He gets called out to what turns out to be a very high profile case. His partner gets tagged by the FBI to help with a case, so Brock gets a temp partner who is new with HCPD, is smart, sexy and has an ex that is harassing her and she has an interesting background. They have to work together to find the killer and figure out their attraction. There are plenty of twists and turns and family interaction. Kris Michaels is amazing at this kind of book - there are so many twists and turns, and you just know you’ve figured it out, but did you? Ms. Michaels is a master. It’s an awesome book and I can’t wait for her next installment.
This book started off very exciting with a murderer scene. But then stalled a little as the investigation stalled and they were just gathering evidence without any strong lead. Which I understand is how most investigations go. But I had wanted more action. The romance with Brock and Kallie started off slow where we as readers didn’t know how they feel about each other. We didn’t really get glimpses until further into the book. But once they acknowledged their feelings to themselves, it took off pretty quickly. I really liked the 2nd part of this book so hang in there and it really picks up. The evidence starts to make sense and the mystery became super exciting. The romance moved along quite nicely where they have hot chemistry. I didn’t quite feel connected with the couple but I did like them and their fun banter.
Brock is a King, but a cousin, not with Guardian. He finds himself in a high stakes case and with a new partner. Kallie is new to the area and department and running from some baggage with an ex husband. Their chemistry is almost instant and they work together great. The addition of Fester and how they are caring for a friends cat is adorable. The case is detailed and multi faceted. I enjoyed seeing their dialogue as they worked through the information. The blend of detective work and family with romance was a hit! Enjoyed this couple and am excited to see more of the two families!
Kallie Redman has taken five years to get back to being a police detective. Her ex-husband ,who was also a cop has spent those years behind bars, thanks to her. A new city gives her the chance to move on with her life the way she wants.
Homicide detective Brock King has got a high profile murder to solve and a new partner to work with. Our hero comes from a large family full of law enforcement officers.
This is a romantic suspense and murder/ mystery filled with great characters and lots of action. You will never guess the killer until the author tells you.
This is the first book in a new series and I can't wait to read more.
I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy of A Hope City Duet . Brock is King is a homicide detective and his best friend Sean McBride is a arson detective . Both work for Hope City . They grew up nextdoor to each other and sometimes cross during their cases . This diet is a fantastic introduction to The Hope City series and it's well written with wonderful characters . The stories are interesting and suspenseful , intense and full of romance . Brock meets Kallie Redman the perfect woman for him . Sean meets Harper the perfect woman for him . They both have to overcome the dangers to get their happy endings . I highly recommend taking the time to read .
Police Detective Brock King ie a good homicide cop. When his partner is sent to an FBI task force, he gets to break in the 'new' Detective Redman. She's got experience, even worked with his cousins at Guardian for a while. She's coming into a case that is very high profile. Together they need to solve the case, which end up with a few interesting twists. There's also their attraction to each other, and her ex-cop ex-husband who was just released from prison who ie making threats. Lots to keep track of.
This is a very good police procedural with a complex mystery. Good characters and dialogue. Engrossing story. Amusing how some readers think the story slows down as they were just gathering evidence and working the leads, even though the author says this is the reality of police work.
It was so annoying, when, within 12 hours of meeting one another both Kallie and Brock separately get themselves off, in great detail. Why do we need to know that so early in this story? Can't it wait, say, 2 days? The author wisely lets their chemistry simmer.
Brock and Kellie find the ever lasting love that they didn't even know they were looking for. She was coming off a bad marriage which ended with Rich in jail for a cold blooded murder. He was on a quest to kill her for turning him in and he had to do jail time even though he had been an undercover officer at the time.Brock and Kelly get their eternal love and take down her Exhusband before he could Kill her. It was a great book
Great Book! I loved that the characters were unproblematic and didn't cause unnecessary drama between them! The mystery aspect was nice and the plot didn't have any holes. It kept me up the whole night! The secondary characters are also promising and I am planning to read their stories. Overall a great late night read!!!
Love the story line and how close to accurate if a lil sensualized (it is a book so expected ) my port city it is . Love the tie in too guardian wow this is the first book and it’s already page turning can’t wait for the love stories in Hope city to unfold
Wonderful read!! Alley the power, sex, and mystery expected from this great group of authors! Combining the King's of Guardian with the King's of Hope City is like two presents in one! I can't wait to read the next book in the Hope City series!!!!!!
If you've read about the King family and Guardian then you're in for some more fantastic reading yet sleep deprived. Hope City is an amazing story and I am just tickled to see it's another great series by another one of my favorite Authors. I can appreciate that as soon as I've read the first chapter. Thank you Kris Michaels for another fantastic read!
I honestly can not say enough good things about Kris's writing. I love some seriously alpha men and the women that tame them and Kris writes them so well.
Love these books and the spin off series. They keep on getting better and better.
You don't know what you are missing if you don't read Kris's work.
Another great Kris Michael’s read. Loved the characters and glad I could find this series, love the way it ties in to Guardians. Brock and Kellie are instantly firing on all fronts. The high profile case they work combined with her nasty ex and all the mystery of both keep you in suspense to the end. Can’t wait to read the next book.
This King family is a little than the Kings in the Guardian series. I really like how this is a mystery kind of thriller romance. Brock and Kallie are likeable and interesting characters. The storyline has some twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Enjoyable read.
This is a great story I love this author. I am working my way through all Kris Michael’s series. You will not only love this book but you will love all of the series. It’s a must to pick up all these books you will love them all
I love this author's books and this did not disappoint! I love the no drama within the couple, but a well written story, with romance and suspense! Love Brown's mom too!
Love the Guardians series? Meet the other side of the family. The Kings of Hope City. Ms. Michaels has created an entire cast of amazing characters and each story has threads that weave into and through each other seamlessly. I honestly can’t get enough.
Binge baby! Hope City is awesome. Cousins to the Kings in The Guardians series this has all the excitement and action that we expect. They even get a little help from the Guardians! Loved every second of it!
3.5⭐️’s for me. Maybe it would have been higher if I had not just finished the Kings, Shadows, Guardians & Hollister series. Coming off those, this one was a bit of a let down. Less action, chemistry and camaraderie.
