Rate this book
Dreams Of Gold And Power
The mountains are brimming with the lure of fortunes--from gold to a booming fur trade. A man at home in this once pristine wilderness, Preacher knows there's no turning back civilization now. What he doesn't know is that beyond the plans of some men is a deadly enemy with far more dangerous designs. . .
Schemes Of Blood And Betrayal
With vengeance-hungry criminals shadowing his every move, Preacher meets a beautiful woman working to bring a rail line to a remote settlement. And while Preacher is distracted by both the beauty and by beastly outlaws, Indians attack the outpost--and settlers fight furiously back for their survival.
One Man's Fight For The Future Of A Land. . .
When the smoke clears and blood dries, Preacher realizes that he's in a war more deadly and complex than any he's known. Agents of a foreign government ignited the Indian attack. And they've got far bigger plans--and only Preacher stands in their way. . .

An old enemy does his best to kill Preacher with his gang of thuds. Preacher was floating down the river when he came within a whisker of being shot and killed. The would-be killers escape but as you know Preacher never forgets. As the story goes on Preacher saves some friends from death but may die in this attack. Preacher takes serious injuries in the attack including a glancing shot to his head. The action continues with a final showdown made uglier when Indians attack the bad guys and the group Preach is leading. Preacher learns who is behind all of the killing and heads to St. Louis, with a new friend to settle the score.

Another great story by the Johnstones. In this one, Preacher gets involved with an Englishman and his sister but does not realize that they hate the Americans in the west; they wanted the land for Britain. They furnish rifles to the Indians, hoping for help in that quarter; and Preacher nearly is done in before he realizes his mistake. A close call for sure. I enjoy these stories as much as the cowboy movie matinees that we attended in the 40's.

Another great Preacher story

Another great Preacher story. The only bad thing about a story about Preacher is: when you get started reading, you get so into the story, you don’t want to stop. Love Preacher and reading his stories. Thanks Jo

Another Great One

This was another great one in the Preacher realm. I admit it... I love Preacher, and the wilder he gets, the better. I'm not sure which Johnstone wrote this book but it was a really good time.
On to the next adventure with Preacher, Horse and Dog!

Good!

Good story but I am not happy with a tale with no end. It did have a good plot until the "no end"!

Stupit is as Stupit does

Preacher comes close to crossin the Great Divide in this story but barely survives thanks to his bravery and tenacity. Much obliged Mr. Johnstones!

As always Preacher is caring when innocent people stuggles to make a living but ruthless when it comes to hurting innocent people. Another of Preacher's eventful adventure.

Solid Action

Another saga of the western frontier filled with action, thrills, and spills. For a minute I thought Preacher had found a replacement for Jenny, but it was not to be.

I couldn't put it down

This continuing story envelopes the reader. The outcome is not sure on whether good or evil will prevail with more than the lives of mere people at stake.

BETRAYAL

Preacher has a STALKER unknown to him. The settlement will be attacked by Blackfeet Indians who have been supplied free guns by English spies who are trying to start an Indian uprising so that England can retake the land west of the Big Muddy. Preacher is taken by the beauty of english
spy, Laura Mallory who he thought had been taken captive with her brother Clyde Mallory said by the Blackfeet. Poor Preacher had his suspicion about the whole incident. Lots of treachery, backstabbing, spies, kidnapping and possible rapes. What a cornucopia of events; we almost Dog and PREACHER, the men sent from St. Louis captured Preacher and were planning on burning him alive by tossing him into a pit of fire...hot

Solid, well crafted novel of the early days of the west. An old enemy of Preacher's is intent on killing him and someone has armed the Blackfeet in an effort to wipe out Corliss and Hart's trading post.

I enjoy all of the William W Johnston's "The First Mountain Man" books. They are short and entertaining, nothing fancy.

Primarily written by William W. Johnstone's son (?),J.A.. Not a bad effort but still below his father's adept handling of plot, dialogue and timing.

Preacher survives again

I very much enjoy "the good guys win" concept and execution in these books. Yes,there is a lot of violence. It fits the context.
