Growing out of your traumas is the most difficult thing in this world. The author shows through this book very vividly. To understand how life for a child is taken care of in a foster care home, you can read this work. Giving a voice to the lives of foster care children, the author’s intention to write this book is commendable.
Many times we forget that our adulthood is shaped by the quality of childhood we have lived. In the pages of ‘You are the Prize’, I found courage, vulnerability, honesty, and determination to alter one’s situation no matter what. I would admit that before reading this book, I didn’t think much about foster care children. Reading this personal narration, my eyes have opened up to many aspects of life. Reading this account is making me see the wonders life has and how well we can reserve it. It would be an understatement to say that life in a foster care home is full of difficulties.
Narrating her story by stitching together pieces of her journey, the author has shared personal accounts of her childhood. It leads one to contemplate more about life and its plans for us. At the end of each chapter, the chapters have been summarised which I found to be extremely motivating for me.
What I learned reading this work -
It is possible to uplift yourself from the abject abyss of trauma and negative emotions if you keep on focusing on the optimistic side of life
It gets very difficult to cope with the normal functionalities of society but hope keeps us hanging through a thread and it is vital to keep holding on
You need to have full faith in yourself to achieve a state of stability with your emotions. It is tougher to do than being said, but that’s what keeps us moving forward - having a sense of hope.
