Alyssa’s a student at one of the most prestigious academies for magical beings. Not that she’s much of a magical being. She’s one of three sisters, descended from a mother who is an expert in magickry, and yet she can’t control her magic. Not a lick. Wait. There’s more.
It’s no surprise that Alyssa’s life’s on a roller coaster. She’s being followed by Shadows, spirits called forth from the afterlife to do the bidding of a dark magic wielder. She’s met a cute guy who is possibly more socially awkward than she is. She’s got a new birthmark that her mother seems to know something of and yet won’t tell Alyssa a thing about it.
Alyssa was different from her sisters, mother, and everyone else she knew. She could feel the darkness within. This feeling did not mean she was evil or had evil tendencies, but it did mean she was closer to dark magic than other people. It also meant that she accessed magic differently than others, and with the three sister mountains behind her house that radiated dark magic, she had a lot of magic power she could draw upon. But she didn’t know how to draw upon the dark magic within her, let alone control it, but when she did, bad things happened. Until she met Cody Waterman, the brightest light magic user she had ever met. He helped her use light magic, which helped her use her dark magic.
This book one is a great setup for the rest of the series. It builds the world very well, sets the scene, and drops a bomb for a cliffhanger at the end. I suggest you get book two before you read this so you know what comes next, or you will be jonesing for it like I am.
Well written and easy to read. I give this fantasy five stars out of five stars.
Alyssa, Carissa, and Everly are three sisters attending the local college for magical and non-magical. Their mother is a professor there teaching about Necromancy. Their father passed when Alyssa was a baby. The two eldest sisters possessed light magic…yet, Alyssa could not seem to perform the basic magic. She turned 18, and everything changed. She got a strange marking on her shoulder, she had had a familiar for years (which is strange), she felt a lot of darkness in her body, and most of all she felt at home on the Three Sisters Mountain where everyone else felt the black magic was evil and people even went missing. Cody is a new transfer to the school and he likes Alyssa. When her magic starts going wonky, he seems to be the only one who can help her control it. One night when the girls are home and Cody is there as well, a horrible accident has just occurred and now they will face the consequences of that accident…or was it? On to book two!
This was an enjoyable and quick read. There was enough of a plot to make me want to continue reading. I found the main character to be very likable. Nothing was overdone. The pacing was great. I tend to read a lot of paranormal type books. This one had everything that I look for, including a surprise ending that makes me want to read the next one right away. Enjoy.
This is a very short story iamer 181 pages and not complete at all. It's more like an introduction to 3 character 4 characters. It doesn't show what the real plot is. But it's very good at leaving you running more so that you're forced to buy the second book in the theory. And that's about i.
It was refreshing to read this coming of age novel, as it didn't follow the normal course of good witch bad witch. We can choose what we want to be and nothing is evil unless our intentions are that way
Horrible ending. It leaves too many questions. I’ll try the next book but I’m not in a rush, honestly. It was good but it didn’t leave me craving to get another book when this one could have been longer.
I have read this a few times before but decided to finish reading book 1. I enjoyed Shadows and will read the rest of A Paranormal Academy Series. by Emery Cole
