It's one of the best books about Reiki I have ever read - although it does not provide the reader with traditional knowledge, it's a very down-to-earth guide to the Western Reiki, free of modern New Age ideas. The authors provide us with useful information about the history of Reiki, traditional techniques, and modern hand positions.

For those who make their first steps on the path of Reiki, it's probably a mandatory reading.

I reserve a star for only one reason... their proofreader, if indeed there was a proofreader, was a crazy person. Other than that, this is a wonderful, accessible book about the history and practice of Reiki. I just got attuned to Reiki Level One this summer, and this book is really helping me figure out how to babystep my way through becoming a good practitioner.

One of the things that you need to know about Reiki if you're going to be a practitioner is the history of how it came to be, and what your personal lineage is. Because of a few hiccups around the time of the Second World War there are a lot of myths and misconceptions about Reiki practice and history. This book goes into detail about how those misunderstandings came to be and what the real truth likely is. I think the writers also have a really healthy attitude about current trends in Reiki and people who have broken with the traditional rules for good, sound reasons (for example, those masters who decided that Takata's price of 10,000 dollars for an attunement was too high).

It also lays out in simple terms how to give a treatment, which is great, and they also have good, simple meditations for people who are just starting out. The book also lays out specifics about what you should be able to expect from a good Reiki teacher at each level. I would highly recommend this book to people who are curious, or to people who are already attuned. Very good stuff.

This book had me in two minds throughout. On the one hand I am not all that impressed, especially by the history and situation of Reiki in the West. On the other hand there is some great information on Japanese culture, the Meiji Emperor's poems, and the syncretic use of Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and Shintoism. In the end I decided there is enough in the book to make it worth keeping as a reference. I would say that its audience are meant to be long time Reiki practitioners and not outsiders (like me) or beginners. However, it did prickle my interest enough to put another Reiki book on my wish list.

Ok, I'm still not a believer. But, contrary to what the beginning made me think, towards the end I started to believe in the honesty of those people. I do not agree with the system nor with their claim of being able to channel such a great energy source, but fine, I'll give them the benefit of doubt.

Super wordy book, a lot of unnecessary information crammed in for the sake of sounding knowledgable. Probably the outcome of having three different authors.

This book seemed a bit redundant to me. With that being said, I really enjoyed reading about the origins of Reiki, different treatment techniques used by Doctor Usui and Hayashi, meditation techniques and practical advices.
