The bestselling author of the “clever spine-tingler” The Secretary returns with an unputdownable thriller following a woman in a desperate search for answers after she’s institutionalized against her will.

The year is 1962, and every night Grace lays her head on her pillow at the Texas State Lunatic Hospital, she reminds herself she is not what they say she is.

Her children and her husband are not dead. They’re searching for her.

Someone knows the truth.

Strangely, that someone is hell-bent on making sure the truth stays buried.

The question is…why?

Meanwhile, Grace has bigger fish to fry, starting with her new roommate.

Elizabeth is certifiable, and she has star status—a deadly combination, Grace realizes.

The kind of woman who has everyone in the palm of her hand, Elizabeth gives even the most menacing of nurses a run for their money, takes bad intentions to a whole new level, and makes crazy look seductive as hell.

Grace learns fast: the best way to deal with lunacy is to befriend it. It may be her only ticket out. She also learns there’s more to her new bunkmate than meets the eye. She’s vile, she’s cunning—and possibly faking it.

The question is…why?

With riveting twists and a breakneck pace, Fever Dream is a propulsive thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Grab a drink. Settle in. I’ve got a quick story for you.

It starts, as most good stories do, with someone chasing a feeling.

Picture a Texas writer surrounded by five kids, two literary dogs, one unreasonable cat, and a partridge in a pear tree—all orbiting a household powered by caffeine, chaos, and sheer willpower.

Instead of getting into trouble in real life, she decided to invent it on the page. (Healthier for everyone. Mostly.)

She didn’t set out to write the perfect thriller, but she has been chasing a certain feeling for years—chasing the perfect story.

The kind that makes you miss your exit, burn your dinner, or stay up later than you meant to.
The kind that makes a reader say “just one more chapter” and lie to themselves beautifully.

Some writers chase awards.
Britney chases that feeling.

You might call it persistence.
She calls it passion—the only real secret ingredient behind thirty-plus books and counting.
Always reaching for whatever that elusive green-light moment is.

She hasn’t caught it yet.
But that’s half the fun.

Britney King never fails to shock with her page turning psychological thrillers and Fever Dream was no different. In a bit of a change this time, we are transported back to 1962 and it was such a great story to binge.

1962, Texas. Grace is telling the truth, he husband and children are still alive but nobody will believe her. She is locked away in the Texas State Lunatic Hospital and being treated with pills, hydro shock therapy and threatened with a lobotomy. She is terrified and starts to think maybe they are right and she is losing her mind. But then she makes a friend in her roommate Elizabeth, and things get even wilder than before.

I can’t say too much more as with all Kings books, you don’t need to know too much going in. It is an absolutely addictive and crazy read that you won’t want to put down.

Thanks so much to Britney King for my advanced copy of this book to read and having me on the Blog tour again. Go grab it April 22nd

Well Britney King you have done it again! Fever Dream was everything I was hoping it would be plus more, and it was another super quick and twisty read. As with all of King's previous novels, I highly recommend going in blind, and I thought it was a lot of fun to just read this without knowing what it was about. Because of this it took me a minute to figure out that this was not a contemporary novel like I was expecting, but actually set back when lobotomies were still a thing and John F. Kennedy was president. I liked that there is a small dash of some history in this one, but at the same time King did an excellent job keeping the reader wondering what is going on with Grace's family, and what led her to the situation she is in.

Elizabeth was definitely my favorite character of the whole book, and I loved her even more than I loved Grace. She was such a strong female character, and I was so happy King wrote someone like her into Fever Dream. It is quite hard to review one of this authors books without heading into spoiler territory, but I can easily say it is one of my favorites so far that she has written. I had no idea what was going to happen next, nor did I guess any of the twists that were coming. I can honestly say I spend every day looking forward to the next King novel I can read, and if you are a fan of psychological thrillers then this one is a MUST. The end made me incredibly happy and left me with some warm and fuzzies which I totally wasn't expecting, but I loved. Fever Dream further ingrained my love of King, and I won't be able to recommend it enough.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Fluff Me Sideways & Call Me A Build-A-Bear! 😳😯😳🤯🤯

Uhm holy fluff cotton balls! What did I just read?! I'm sorry but excuse me B. King what did you DO to me!? My mind is spun out like the making of cotton candy! Whhhaaattt?! Fluuffff Meee Mother Fluffer! I can't even... I just.. and then.. but she?! And wait! .. but who?! .. WHAT?!
It's 1962 and Grace is a patient at Texas State Lunatic Hospital. But she's not really crazy, she can't be what they say. Her husband and kids are still alive & they're searching for her. Someone knows the truth alright, but they want to do everything possible to keep her locked away & the truth stays with her.
Grace's roommate, Elizabeth, is not only certifiably insane but top status - a force to be reckoned with in the institution, even with the nurses. From watching Elizabeth, she takes a page from her book and decides if you can't beat 'em, join 'em to get out of there. But just how cray cray is Elizabeth & does she have secrets of her own?
I'm absolutely speechless, dumbfounded, gobsmacked! You think you know, you think you understand, but nope! Nadda. No way! I'm still reeling - sitting here shocked, heart thumping like bunny Thumper's foot and lost beyond words. This is her BEST BOOK YET! Run for this gem do not WALK when it becomes available. I need serious caffeine recharge now! Woooow! Mind pretzel twisted.

Thank you personally & whole-heartedly to @britneyking_ for this DARC!

The Water Trilogy by Britney King is still my favorite, but she writes such interesting psychological thrillers, that I will read…eagerly…any novel she pens. That being said, let’s delve into Fever Dream, a story that takes place in a Texas State Asylum.

Fever Dream is Britney King’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

I am seesawing back and forth with Grace. I am trying to figure out exactly what is going on with with her. I don’t feel she is crazy, but how much does she know? Is she complicit with Clint’s disappearance?

A frontal Leucotomy is in her near future. WTH? The doctor says they are out of options and this is the way to go. He considers her lucky…yeah, right. Is he a mad scientist? Or worse?

I was curious about Elisabeth, not sure whether she was a good or bad person, disturbed, or something else. In the end, I was Team Elisabeth. She is a fascinating character and helped create some twists and turns that I never saw coming.

The rating: Fever Dream kept me reading, but I just didn’t feel that sense of urgency I expected with Grace. Elisabeth definitely made up for it. The ending…it felt a little too rushed for me, but it wasn’t what I was expecting…and that is a huge plus.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Fever Dream by Britney King.

“𝘏𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺…𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺…𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸.”

I can’t stop myself from shuddering when I read the above quote from Britney King’s latest heart-racing, spine-tingling psychological thriller, 𝘍𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮!

It’s 1962 and for wife and mother, Grace, an unimaginable nightmare is taking shape. She’s a SAHM of two kids and recently gave birth to her son. The demands are relentless, especially when your newborn has colic and your husbands work keeps him away, leaving her all alone with 3 young children to care for.

Texas State Lunatic Hospital is were she now resides and her husband and two eldest children are missing. Grace has no idea where they are and if she had anything to do with their disappearance? Police suspect foul play on her part?

In the 60’s, apparently Lunatic Hospitals or Insane Asylum’s, could do anything they wanted to patients even if it meant cutting into there brain! Completely terrifying and horrific!

Thankfully, as Grace was spiraling further down a new “crazy, crazy” roommate joined her. Elizabeth happened to become her closest ally and gave Grace the strength to fight her way out, even with Elizabeth being a real crazy. I loved how King was able to brilliantly connect two strangers from two very different mentalities and socioeconomic statuses and show how powerful a bond can be formed without prejudice and bias. ♥️

Twisted, frightening, disturbing and a book that will stay with me forever.

Thank you Enticing Journey and Britney King for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

Grace's husband and children go missing and she gets sent to the Texas State Lunatic Hospital. She knows she didn't hurt her family and is not crazy. So why is she here? And how can she get herself out? The premise for this story had me sold. I was very intrigued from the beginning. I don't want to say much more about the plot, but be prepared for a wild tale. I have read many of Britney King's books and if you enjoyed her others, you will likely enjoy FEVER DREAMS as well. It was a quick fast-paced story that you can read in a day.

Many thanks to the author, Britney King, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my review.

Favorite Quotes:

Later, as I was lying in my bed, a strange sensation came over me. It smelled like sorrow but it had a bitter taste, a bit like revenge.

I’d heard through the grapevine that Elizabeth was here on account of her promiscuity, but no one could provide any concrete detail. It’s not an easy task to ask a woman whether she’s a whore, and if so, what that entails, exactly.

She’s too perfect. Tart and sweet, like candy. You know it’s bad for you, but you can’t help yourself.

You’ve done a lot of dumb, stupid things, no? Well, guess what? You’re not through yet. You’re gonna do some more. Might as well hurry up and get it over with... There’s always going to be a next one.

Elizabeth was a hard person to love, and a harder person not to.

My Review:

This was a prickly read that was disconcerting and alarmingly realistic. I had a hard time liking the characters as they were rather annoying and pathological creatures, yet I was fully invested and wiggling on the hook with their diabolically addictive and unpredictable storylines.

I fall for this every time as Britney King has consistently managed to do this to me. She turns me inside out and upside down and makes me like it and scream for more. I flinched and cringed throughout perusal but could not in good conscience walk away and leave them to their own devices. This was nail-gnawing and cuticle-tearing suspense... I’ll need to wear mittens in public this week.

Thank you Britney for accepting me into your arc team and gifting me an advance e-copy!

I have been in a major thriller slump and this psychological thriller is just what I needed to pull me out of it!

1962. Grace is placed in a Texas lunatic hospital and “treated” in ways that would be considered highly unethical and cruel in modern times with the use of hydro therapy, lobotomy against her consent, and questionable therapy. The thing is we don’t get definite answers as to why she’s placed there…until the very end. We’re only told that her husband and children are missing, presumably dead, and the police think Grace might have something to do with it. Grace does not believe she’s insane or that she is responsible for them gone missing.

Soon enough, she has a new roommate called Elizabeth, an eccentric and bold woman much ahead of her times. Elizabeth is brash yet intelligent, calculating her every move just so she maintains some level of control. Grace admires and hates Elizabeth’s fierceness yet knows something is terribly off with her new roommate. Has Elizabeth been planted for Grace’s downfall or is she the ticket to freedom? You’ll have to read to find out. Expect a night of no sleep because Fever Dream is an absolutely unputdownable book that’ll keep you up till its very last page!

Britney King delivers again! 𝘍𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 is a binge-in-one-sitting, can’t-wait-to-get-to-the-end psychological thriller!

What an intriguing premise! Told in alternating first-person POVs, this novel takes us back to 1962–and straight into the insane asylum, hydroshock therapy and lobotomies be damned!

As usual, King’s captivating prose sucked me in from page 1, and didn’t let go until the end!

Thank you to Ms. King and Enticing Journey Book Promotions for the gifted eARC! 𝘍𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 releases 4/22/22!

This was my first book by Britney King and I was so pleased with how this psychological thriller played out! There were things that happened early in the book that didn’t make sense at the time, but further along, it all came together. Throughout the whole book, I kept asking myself if I could trust Grace’s side of the story, constantly wondering if she was of sound mind and if what I was reading was the truth. The twist at the end was very surprising, one that I did not see coming and never would have guessed. The ending itself left me feeling happy but also curious at how things would ultimately play out for Grace. I will for sure be reading more books by King and encourage everyone to check this one out!

A huge thank you to Britney King for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

"Sometimes, you have to accept the lesser of two evils."

Fever Dream, the latest psychological thriller from the creative mind of Britney King, will definitely touch all of your psychological buttons, flip all of your switches, and leave you questioning whose version of reality you should believe.

The setting and time are perfect for the story told. The story unfolds in October 1962 in the Texas State Lunatic Hospital. Of course, the name of the Hospital is not now a politically correct term, but "lunatic" is the perfect description of several characters. The reader is left to ponder which version of events described is reality and truth and which is the product of a deranged mind. And to question if the lunatics are the patients or the staff.

In 1962, this reviewer was 14-years-old. I strongly recall the national and international events that provide the backdrop to this brilliantly conceived and exquisitely developed story. The fears alluded to in the book were real. It is ironically chilling that these fears are back in vogue in 2022.

Britney King excels in developing the female protagonists in her novels. This book is primarily focused on the POV of Mrs. Grace Solomon. Her children disappear under very mysterious circumstances. Was Grace responsible? Did she have an accomplice? Is Grace delusional? Was her husband leading a double life? Is Grace being framed by the hospital staff?

Grace gets a roommate soon after her incarceration in the Mental Institution. Her beautiful and charismatic roommate Elizabeth Yarring teaches Grace the skills and attitude she needs to survive. Elizabeth readily admits to a life well lived on both sides of legality and prides herself on her survival skills. And her pragmatism. Such as the wisdom noted at the beginning of this review, that the lesser of two evils often has to be accepted to survive.

As is always the case in Britney King novels, the book's final third unfolds at breakneck speed with twists and turns aplenty! To further describe the events driven by the plans and actions of Grace and Elizabeth would definitely be a spoiler for the many twists and turns in the story that follows! And, as always, most readers will likely find that most of the events were unexpected. The conclusion of the book was sweetly satisfying.

Fever Dream is most definitely a 5-star read! As a long-time reader of Britney King's books, I am highly familiar with her portfolio of outstanding books. As a pure psychological thriller, this one, set in a Lunatic Hospital during crazy times that I well recall, may be her best book yet. I guarantee you that it will mess with your head!

I received an advanced reading copy (ARC) for an honest review. My review is provided voluntarily and enthusiastically.

Fever Dream is yet more proof of why Britney King is as successful as she is. The story is unique and grips you right from the first chapter.

I loved being transported back to 1962 and seeing how psychiatric patients were treated back then (hydrotherapy, shock therapy, and lobotomies). Having studied psychology this angle awoke more than just the thriller and suspense lover in me.

Grace is a well-developed character and reading from her POV added to the intrigue. The reader is as confused as Grace is throughout the book. As far as supporting characters go, Elizabeth is my favourite, she reminded me a little of Harley Quinn (nerd alert). Not only do we get to read from Grace’s POV but also from the journal entries of her psychiatrist. And that is where I will stop, saying more will include spoilers.

What I will say – I didn’t see the plot twist coming and the build-up to it was done perfectly. Throughout the book, you wait for the shoe to drop, and then… BOOM.

Britney king has become one of my top three favorite authors with the passerby and fever dream. There is always a twist that you never expected entwined into each work of art.

Fever dream is a novel that takes place in 1962. (Grace) a wife and mother of three children ends up waking up in an insane asylum because her husband and children have gone missing and you've guessed it! They think Grace is crazy and that she murdered her entire family. The more Grace rebells and tries to prove her innocence the more punishment she ensues. Only Grace knows the truth but as days pass by she starts to wonder if she really is losing her mind? Why aren't her husband or her kids popping up? Where are her in laws? Will her family be found and come to her rescue before they give her a lobotomy and she really loses it? It's seems Elizabeth (Grace's new roommate) is her only true friend in the world! This on the edge of your seat thriller will keep you on your toes until the very last sentence. Britney King is an up and coming psychological thriller queen.

Ms. King is one of my go to authors when it comes to psychological thrillers and once again she blows it out of the water. I honestly wasn't sure where Grace's story was going to lead and never saw it coming. She does a fantastic job of delving into the human mind and creating very believable storylines and characters that are your every day average "Joes and Janes". She also makes you start to question everything and everyone at some point in her story and sprinkles in just enough suspicion that you aren't sure what you believed to be the truth is still the truth. Fever Dream is no exception to her long list of wickedly delightful thrillers that will keep your mind twisting and turning until the very last page and long past your bedtime!

I loved the atmospheric setting and gaslighting that occurred in the asylum. The setting was so unique as I have not read anything quite like it! You are transported in time with King’s great writing style. Is Grace really insane or is it there a dark delicious secret that is covered up? As you dig in further and further you question everything! So many twists throughout and the final twist will slap you in the face!

***** Many thanks to Britney King for the gifted copy as it was provided to me in turn for my honest opinion.

This psychological thriller will have you on your toes the entire time. Wondering and guessing every possible scenario. When Grace is accused of the worst and committed to an asylum you begin to really question if she is telling the truth about her family. Could a mother really do the things she's been accused of?
When Elizabeth comes along as her roommate things get even more twisted. Knowing who to trust is definitely tricky in this interesting mind bender. I give this 5 stars for holding my attention and making me really think.

It is 1962 and Grace is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Lobotomies and shock therapy are the norm. Her husband and children are missing and it is believed she killed them. Grace insists they are alive. This is another Britney King novel that I could not put down. A conclusion that I did not see coming.

Once again this author proves she the queen of psychological suspense and twists you don't see coming. The characters are engaging and repellent at the same time depending on where in the story you are. I had to force myself to put the book down since the storyline kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. Definitely a book you shouldn't miss.

Grace's husband and two older children disappear while she is at the hospital with her infant. She is committed to a mental hospital, accused of harming them. She can't remember hurting anyone and no one believes her.

Wow! I never saw that story coming when I started reading it. My heart felt for Grace and everything that she had to endure in that "hospital". It's ironic that I knew someone who had spent time in a mental institution because of a nervous breakdown. She always insisted that the doctors there were "crazier than she was".

There are triggers in this book, adultery, murder, suicide, child kidnapping.

This is suspense on drugs. I was so intrigued by this book I just couldn't put it down. This is one book you will never figure out until Britney King is ready for you to. I always felt sorry for Grace she always seemed so confused and at times naive. When she comes into contact with Elizabeth she wasn't sure if she was friend ot foe. But time will help Grace put everything in perspective and change her whole life. I love Britney King's Books she always keeps me on my toes. Fever Dream is a quick, intense, tightlyplotted book which swept me up and demanded I read through the end on one sitting. I just had to know what what going on! The dreadful situation in which Grace finds herself is described economically, but to great effect. Her impotence in the face of circumstances over which she has zero control, underlines the sense of frustration, anger and outrage that I felt on her behalf. Elizabeth, for me, remains a tragic enigma while Dr Branson is a character who emerges from the pages of his notes, as well as his actions.
I loved Grace's resilience under intense fire, her kindness and felt her confusion and vulnerability in my bones. Great read. 💖💖💖💖💖

As a therapist and lover of thrillers, I was eager to read this for my book club. However, early on it became apparent this was not the experience I had hoped for. The character development and storyline seemed rather shallow to me and unbelievable; not enough detail was given to build the characters and their relationships. I also found the language to be basic and uncreative at times. Several times throughout the book, the author would contradict a previous statement or description. It was confusing. The story has hints of The Silent Patient but is nowhere near as suspenseful and shocking. 2.5/5.

I usually like to give pretty in depth reviews of the books I read, especially the ones I love; but this one was so tight plotted, it's hard to explore all the nooks & crannies without giving anything away. You'll just have to take my word when I say this is going to be one of the best psychological thrillers you'll ever read.

King takes us back in time to Texas State. It's 1962, Kennedy is president & Grace Solomon was just admitted to the Lunatic Hospital. A place where hydrotherapy, shock therapy & lobotomies are "for your own good". A place where if you say you did it, you're admitting you're crazy & if you say you didn't, well... "✍️ patient is in denial, patient is presenting extreme psychosis" You will be punished *er* treated either way.

Her husband & her children have disappeared, there's blood in their kitchen & whispers of baby blues are circulating Willow Lane, her suburban homestead. They think Grace is certifiably insane & that she killed her family; only they have no bodies to prove it.

Alternating between 2 first person POVs, we get the full inside scoop. We get Grace's thoughts & Psychiatrist Dr. Branson's journal entries where he discusses his findings & murky methods of treatment.

The book starts out slow but the writing is so completely captivating that the pace is essentially a moot point. There was no extra fluff or filler in the storyline. Every word you read has a critical excuse for being there. The dialogue was captured perfectly; dripping with suspense & a hefty dose of Southern undertones. My interest was piqued from the first line to the very last.

The part I loved the most was the supreme level of gaslighting King subjects her readers to (but I guess it's expected when a book takes place in an Insane Asylum). I had to second guess everything I was reading. Every exchange between characters felt so cryptic, like some kind of clue, a riddle to dissect, something I should remember for later on. I loved it. It kept me on the edge of my seat & right on the brink of my sanity; A true testament to what makes an incredible psychological thriller!

Fans of The silent Patient will love this one!

An action-packed ride of your life, from page one till the final sentence. I was enthralled. The twists are not predictable; the drama is special and emotional and I’ll let you see what else.

Set at a time just before the Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy was President. They say you never forget what you were doing when Kennedy was shot. I know I was waiting for my parents to meet. But whenever a major event happens, you have important memories and for me, major events don’t get better than a new Britney King book. Fever Dream is a major release. It’s the best so far, in my opinion, and one that really needs, deserves to be read.

Grace’s husband and two of her children are missing. One is in the hospital. Grace is in the asylum. So are Elizabeth and many others. The rules were different then. The rules and methods have changed a lot. This is not PC, so hold on to your hats. Britney is going to take you on a journey you will want to join. You don’t have to be mad to be in the asylum, but you will be to miss this book.

The characters are great, adding so much to the story, all are believable. Some are more fun than others, but all have issues, whether patients or otherwise. There is tension aplenty, which is so well written and had me gripped, I just couldn’t put it down. So I didn’t. This is something that cost me sleep and a meal but was so worth it. I really loved this thriller and hope you do. I guess it’s not a secret that I love the writing of Britney King and I know you will see why as soon as you start to read this one. Fever Dream is her best so far. For me, it’s frustrating that you can only give five stars. I’m guessing it’s so other authors don’t get left behind.

I just finished Britney King’s latest psychological thriller and it was incredible!!

It’s hard to pin this one down to a specific genre because while it is most definitely does the work of psychological thriller, it also serves as historical fiction, as well as women’s fiction. And I loved it!!

The majority of the story takes place in the Texas State Lunatic Hospital, and our main character, Grace Solomon, has recently been accused of involvement in her husband and children’s disappearance.

During her stay, Grace meets Elizabeth. An enigmatic frequent flyer of the asylum who has plans to escape, again. As she tells her roommate, “Oh, Grace. You’re so privileged. You have no idea there are worse things out there than there are in here,” Grace begins to understand why Elizabeth continues to return to the asylum.

The novel takes place in the fall of 1962, emphasizing how little control women had over their lives aside from homemaking and child-rearing. So when Grace is placed in an asylum and her husband is no where to be found, the asylum becomes her prison. Her captor is one Dr. Jay Branson and he has dark and insidious plans for rehabilitating Grace during her stay. With thinly-veiled threats from Dr. Branson and his team, and a lot of gaslighting and crazy-making, Grace struggles to maintain her resolve. She must free herself, find her husband and children, and clear her name.

I LOVED this book!! Thank you so much to @britneyking_ and her top-notch street team for including me in the Release Blast for FEVER DREAM!!
