Grown-Up Stuff Explained: 75 Topics 18-Year-Olds Should Know

Rate this book
Turning 18 makes you an adult, but it doesn’t magically give you all the knowledge that you need function like one.

To help young adults become familiar with many of the topics that grown-ups need to know, the book provides teen-friendly explanations of subjects related to civic responsibilities, employment, living arrangements, paying off debt, owning a car, saving and investing, traveling, and others.

The author answers three main questions about each of the items covered:

• When is it relevant?
• What is it?
• Why it matters?

In order to keep readers engaged, the material gets to each point quickly and succinctly. Every subject is limited to one page and is accompanied by a cartoon that summarizes the main idea.

I have a daughter who’s a college freshman and like a lot of kids in her generation, she knows the ins-and-outs of social media, class subjects and not much else. While the book is not informative to most “seasoned” adults, I found the topics covered and the manner they are presented to be useful.

The book covers base-level information on a wide array of 75 topics that are organized into groups (money, job, debt, health, etc.). The format of presenting each is perfect … one page per topic structured in a succinct manner that briefly summarizes the what, why and when … just enough to familiarize and introduce topics that will certainly affect young adults. The little tongue-in-cheek comics at bottom of each page keep things fun.

This thing is going out to my daughter in the next care package. The info the book provides is tangible and the format allows it to be a quick read … perfect for the on-the-go lifestyle of most 18 year olds.

This is an excellent book! A birthday gift for our eldest who just turned 18 today, I decided to give it a read while she was at school.

It covers exactly the sorts of terms a young adult hears about all the time (like 401(k) or debt consolidation or a security deposit) but might not quite understand or know whether they are relevant to ask about.

It’s very brief information, just the basic definitions and why the topic matters, plus a quick comic strip re-explaining it for the shortest attention spans. I think any high schooler or college kid would benefit from this introduction to adulting.

Such a helpful and eye-opening read!
This book is perfect for high school seniors and college kids who are about to step into the real world. It covers so many important topics that schools should be teaching but don’t—things like credit scores, taxes, savings, insurance, and all the other “grown-up stuff” that can feel overwhelming. The information is clear, easy to understand, and actually useful. Every young adult should have this book in their hands before graduation!
