This book will soon be 90 years old, a "brief" history of Chinese civilization from the point of view of its cultural structure, the historical determinants that defined it and the influence of culture on historical trends. It is an extensive work, covering from the late Paleolithic to the last dynasty, the entire imperial period of China. The perspectives on religion, interaction with neighboring cultures, whether or not they were invaders, are very interesting. I feel that it loses some rigor in the analysis of the Qing dynasty, but for such an ambitious work, the result is commendable, as befits an important sinologist of the early twentieth century.
