All artists have been through rejection, and with so many avenues, one can finally take their fate into their own hands. Discover the horrors Alyanna Poe has created, which otherwise would not have come to light. REJECTS is a collection of twenty-one horror stories, spanning from slasher to cosmic to paranormal, that have all been rejected by publishers. Alyanna thoroughly edited and perfected each story, sending them out for beta readers' approval before publication to ensure readers' satisfaction.
Take A Peek Inside:
The Legend of Kyle: An older man takes his young, female coworker into the woods, revealing his biggest secret.
Succor of the Ophidian: A strange invisible extraterrestrial interrupts a couple on their tropical retreat.
Helena: A hateful husband exacts his darkest fantasies against his wife.
In Reflective Depth: After an argument with her husband, a woman escapes into the ocean on a small boat, only to be met with a fight she may not be able to win.
Twenty-one bite sized tales of terror all wrapped into one package.
I was just a lonely teenager with a notebook and a pen when I wrote my first novel EATEN. Little did I know it would become my career to write thrilling tales of horror and macabre. I love entertaining and reading has been close to my heart since I was a young child.
One thing will remain the same about each of my books for all of eternity: there’s a little piece of my soul within every page. From Amelia to Abigail to Rebel to Mia, each of my characters carries a part of me with them, for better or for worse. From my skin picking disorder to the loss of my brother to the haunted house I grew up in to my severe OCD and intrusive thoughts, my characters are cursed to live a fate with something from my own twisted life.
As I started my career, social media turned to videos as the main source of entertainment, and so I learned how to write and record my own skits with my cousin BoB. BoB dislikes the gothic, the macabre, the horrific, meanwhile my special interests include poisons, cannibalism, and medieval medical practices.
When Alyanna Poe sent me the short story “Waterin’ Corpses” to get a taste of her new book “Rejects,” my blurb on it was: a demented, gothic tale with sinister veins that leaves you feeling like you just enjoyed a Tim Burton short film in your mind.
At that point, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the entire collection, and I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Alyanna… although I did decide to purchase a signed copy for my collection after I finished it, as well.
First off, I love the cover. Not only does it exemplify all the different faces/personalities that authors wear to create various stories and characters (discarded on the ground to show the ‘rejected’ ones), but it ended up pertaining directly to the short story “A Violent Disposition” as well. That was very cool. Did I mention she designed the cover herself? And that it’s actually her on the cover? This author works hard. She is also related to Edgar Allan Poe, which explains the evident talent within the horror genre.
These stories are all very fun. They’re exclusively horror, which I love. Each one is a length that is easily read within a short period of time, which is great for when you are craving bite-sized horror on a busy schedule. My favourite stories in the collection were “Brooding Muses” and “The Screaming Woman.” Both played on the darkness from the characters’ pasts and what mentally ill ways it can come back to haunt the present.
This book comes out February 8th, 2022, and I definitely recommend that you take the time to pick up a copy and support Alyanna Poe. She’s going places and has a writing style with a gothic flourish that is not to be missed.
When I heard of a collection of stories rejected by publishers being put out, I had to dive in. I didn't love every tale told, but I definitely felt that there were some strong enough to make me wonder why they were rejected. A handful of endings felt abrupt and I think that they could have been flushed out a bit more, but overall I liked this collection. I've never seen an author so obsessed with their characters raising one eyebrow, so you know I'll be visiting other Poe titles in the future!!
This is a collection of 21 stories written by Poe. The unique thing about these stories is that they have all been rejected at some point by publishing companies they were submitted to. These stories range from slasher, cosmic, and even paranormal. This is Poe's way of saying, "It's okay to be rejected. Your shine is not for everyone."
I was given this copy in exchange for an honest review.
As always, I didn't vibe with all the stories inside but I did comprise a top 5; "Waterin' Corpses", "Camp Ohumu Kipi", "The Tank", "Transmission of the Fool", and "Among Ashes" were my favorites.
This reminded me of an upgraded version of "scary stories to tell in the dark." Each story had a unique style and set of characters, and I was always left with a grim smile on my face after each one ended. Poe is a master of crafting horror short stories, with excellent pacing and delightfully morbid payoff. If you're a fan of horror or just writing in general that will keep you turning pages, this is for you. Such a great read; I'll be checking out Poe's other works next!
Some of the stories in Rejects are very good (Brooding Muses, Of Desire and Consternation, The Screaming Woman), some I wish were longer ( The Tank), but all were rejected for publication. The stories range from horror and sci-fi to the weird and strange.
