Did Not Finish
I’ve read one other book by Cassie Edwards, and it was a trial to get through. She still had the same theme of too much emotion with her exclamation points at the end of things that didn’t need an exclamation point, and that is so annoying.
For ex:
He was Chippewa. He would always be Chippewa!

But he would never forget her. He would carry her within his heart forever!

He could not imagine how it would feel to enter such a place, or even to stand in its shadow!

Why does all of that have an exclamation point at the end? That doesn’t make sense! It’s too much emotion!

The 10 year old Fire Cloud did not sound like a 10 yr old at all. He was talking and thinking like a man. That’s bad writing. He was using words like tantalizing, scrutinizing, and apparatus, words that 10 year olds don’t use, I don’t care how smart they are. And those were also words that people in the 1800s wouldn’t have used. I mean, the 10 year old boy said: “As for me, I find this beautiful land endlessly interesting. I explore often, and each day there is something new to discover.” Are you kidding me? What 10 year you old do you know that talks like that?

The attraction between Fire Cloud and Janelle was completely forced. They notice each other when they’re 10, which isn’t strange, but they still remember each other in stunning detail 15 years later, when he’s 25 and she’s 23. What 10 year old remembers a very brief look at another person so clearly they can perfectly describe the person 15 years later? No one, because it’s unrealistic and impossible! And then they’re both just consumed with thoughts of the other. I mean, good grief, you don’t even know each other and you’re wondering if the other is married. This is so contrived. And they can think of nothing else but each other. I’m so sick of them thinking about the other that I just want to scream. I see how the rest of the book is going to go, just mindless thoughts about each other and their feelings and nothing else. Hello, a book needs more than feelings.

I’m so mad right now. The author clearly led me to believe that Fire Cloud was a virgin. He hadn’t shown any interest in taking a wife, and hadn’t thought about women. He had only ever thought about her. So, naturally I expected him to be a virgin. Then on pg. 83 Tall Night just drops the bomb “of course he knew Fire Cloud had taken women to his blankets.” Wtf? Screw this crap. How could he sleep with other women when he was so attracted to Janelle? I really hate him now. That just came out of nowhere. And he says that Janelle is the only woman he ever desired. Uh, no. That’s a lie. Because you obviously desired other women enough to sleep with them, and that’s after you met Janelle, the women you claim to love. Screw this.
You have them meet when they were kids, a perfect setup to them being together, faithful to each other, and then you have him grow up to sleep with other women. That’s so sweet!

"I haven't been this engrossed in a book in a long time. The writing style is so engaging that I lost track of time."
